Meraki MDM, Apple Configurator & Apple ID Passwords

Currently I am using Apple Configurator to manage my school's iPads.  Pusing profiles, settings, and of coarse apps (both free and purchased? VPP codes).
Ok have been trying to figure out a way to use an MDM solution to manage everything so I don't have to physically plug them into the dock of the computer that is using Apple Configurator.
I found Meraki MDM, signed up for the free account, took care of all the push certificate stuff, and even installed the Meraki Management Profile through Apple Configurator on some test devices.
Through Meraki's control panel, pushed out a free app to the devices.
Here is my problem and question:  Is there any way I can use an MDM solution WITHOUT having to use an Apple ID and Password to install a pushed update?  If it can be through Meraki, that would be awesome since it is free.  I am just weary of either:
A- Having individuals (teachers or students) using their personal Apple ID & Password.  I don't want their stuff being associated with a school device.
B- Passing out the generic School Apple ID & password.
I know I can make a free Apple ID using a bogus e-mail address, but I think worst case scenario with this stuff- I don't want a student to have access to this account and password and start messing with it or even give them the ability to change the password.  I know that 99% of students won't care, but there is always that 1%.
Anywho, if anyone can let me know if this is even possible or prived some links to specific show me how it can be set up using either Meraki or Apple Configurator.  Or if there is another way to do this using another product, please let me know.  The key here is not having to having to use an Apple ID & Password to push out Mobile updates via the MDM.
Thanks!

Hi Mr_Shul,
Your question addresses a feature that many of us want Apple to support...the ability to wirelessly distribute apps to school owned devices without requiring end user authentication. However, the process you are asking for is currently unsupported by Apple and most MDM providers. The only supported way Apple currently has to distribute VPP codes tied to one Apple ID is through Supervised devices in Apple Configurator. That being said, there are some unsupported workarounds that can "technically" make this possible depending on the MDM provider you have (Meraki is not one of them). Unfortunately I can't discuss that here. Check with other MDM providers to see if they can point you in the right direction. You may find a solution that will work for you.
Hope this helps. Good luck!

  • Meraki MDM without Apple Configurator

    Hi all,
I'm completely new to Apple devices and am having to setup some kind of solution for managing circa 40 iPad 2's on a low budget.
I've done a lot of research into the topic and can see Meraki MDM is free though has it's limitations.  Looking through a few dicussions on here it appears a lot of people use Meraki and ACM in tandem.  I'm not completely adverse to purchasing a Mac though I'm thinking the pros of not buying one outweigh the cons (mainly the initial cost).
What I'm trying to get to the bottom is something I've read 2 different accounts of.
When installing a VPP purchased app via the MDM, apparently there is no way of reclaiming this code unless it is supervised and removed via ACM.  However there appears to be an option when deploying via the MDM to remove the app.  Is that just how it sounds?  That it will remove the app but not reclaim the code for a future install?
What I'm thinking of is even if we have to remove a few apps from various devices, the costs are not likely to get anywhere near the cost of a Mac.  Or am I just being naive?
For information on setup.  There are 44 iPad 2.  16 of them will go to Classroom teachers and the rest will be scattered around each classroom (2 - 4 per classroom).  I'm thinking of using the same ID (an institution ID) and giving those details to the classroom teachers so that when I push an app and they're prompted they can authorise on the classroom devices too.
There will only be an IT Technician on site around once a week so it's important we have some way to manage these remotely.  The idea of having to hook them up to a Mac individually everytime there's an update is not at all appealing.
Any thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Use VPP.  Select an MDM.  Read the google doc below and nsdjoey write up.

  • Apple Configurator Wi-Fi password bug? or just need to RTFM?

I've been playing around with the new Apple Configurator for a few days now and have run into a problem when creating profiles that I want to install on a few iPad 2s.  I'm either doing something fundamentally wrong and need to RTFM more closely, or there's a bug in the software that I'm hoping someone could (a) confirm and (b) provide a workaround.
The problem is when I define a Wi-Fi payload for a network that uses WPA2 Enterprise (PEAP with user/pass RADIUS authentication) in that Apple Configurator steadfastly refuses to save the password.  I've tried installing Configurator on a couple of different Macs and have been able to replicate this problem on each of them.  I have also tried recreating the profile in Configurator and also importing a profile into the it from IPCU.  In this scenario, Configurator *does* remember the Wi-Fi password, but  does *not* remember/honor the passcode timeouts.   Furthermore, *any* changes I make to the imported profile wipes the saved Wi-Fi password.
I realize that this is 1.0 software, but somehow I expected something a little bit more polished from Apple (afterall, it's not "0.9b").  So the question for the community is this:  Am I doing something wrong or is this simply a bug?   Is there a workaround that anyone has discovered?
    TIA,
    Mike

Thanks for the reply.  I was in touch with a Apple engineer who also recommended that I file a bug report.  The Bug ID for this is: 11054681.
In the meantime, I was able to figure out a workaround.
Create configuration profiles in IPCU for (a) Wi-Fi (b) Passcode settings and (c) Everything else
Export each of those config profiles
Using Apple Configurator, import those profiles into it using the "+" button
Prepare and Supervise the devices as usual.
So long as I don't touch the Wi-Fi or Passcode profile, Configurator honors the password and passcode settings and applies them to the iOS devices as expected.  Another reason to use IPCU for the passcode settings is that IPCU allows for Autolock to be set up to 15 minutes whereas Configurator only allows for up to 5 minutes.
Another bug (feature?) that I noticed is that if you have a configuration profile that contains Web Clips, Configurator duplicates those Web Clips on the iPad when you make and apply changes to a supervised device.  If the Web Clip is defined as "Not Removable", you're left with multiple copies of the same Web Clip on the iPad.  The only way I was able to get around that was to either (a) not use Web Clips or (b) Erase all Settings from the iPad and allow Configurator to reapply the config everytime I made any changes to the iPad.  I also filed a bug report for this behavior (Bug ID# 11054780)
Anyhow, Configurator has a lot of promise, just a lot of bugs for a 1.0 release.
    Regards
    Mike

  • Every time I turn on the Internet (3G or wifi) theirs an apple notification asking me to type my apple id password.

Every time I turn on the Internet (3G or wifi) theirs an apple notification asking me to type my apple id password. And this hapenes frequently( every time I open an application that requires Internet like safari, app store, iTunes...)

    Try this out
Drag the folder Macintosh_HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration to the trash and then restart the computer.
Once the computer boots up, Click the blue apple and then select System Preferences and then select Network.
From the Show pop-up menu, choose Network port Configuration' (it would default to Network Status), then drag Airport in the table below to the top position
After that, from the Show pop-up menu, choose AirPort.'. Locate the pop-up menu next to "By default, join:" and choose 'A specific network'. Select your network and then a password (if required) and then click on the 'Apply now' button.
If you are still not connnected to the internet select your network from the airport icon on the right side of the menu bar
Reboot the machine to test whether this procedure fixed the issue

  • Does family member still need to enter apple ID & password when buy content

    Hi,
I setup family sharing for my family.
I am the organizer and my wife is family member.
So, when my wife buy something from app store, she still need to enter her apple ID & password, doesn't she?
And then, the money will be charged to my credit card in my apple ID account. Is that right?
If yes, can we configure "Ask to buy" feature for my wife? (Because as far as I know that feature only apply to kid).
    Regards,
    Khuong

Yes, they will need to enter their password, and as far as I know this applies to children too (which is why they were encouraged to choose a password they could remember during setup.  I assume this is to authenticate that the purchase (or request in the case of a child) is coming from them.
All purchases are charged to the organizer's credit card.
Ask to buy will only work with child IDs, not adults.

  • Trying to change from Iphone 4 to Iphone 5, keep getting the message that my Apple ID password is incorrect, but it is not! Help!

I am trying to follow the steps to switch from my old IPhone 4 to my new IPhone 5s. I am having several issues.
    1. My Iphone 5s is telling me my Apple ID password is incorrect, it is not.
    2. When I first turned on my IPhone 5s, it uploaded my IPad information. I don't want that to remain on the phone.
I am going crazy trying to get this new phone going. I cannot afford the $29.99 one time support and cannot make it to an Apple store during the work week. Is there anyone who can help?

IF you have a backup for your iPhone 4, I suggest you to go on your new 5S to Settings / General all the way down to / Reset and then click on to Erase All Content and Settings.
PLEASE keep in mind that this will erase all the content of the machine and reset it to fabric.
Then, it will prompt again all the Configuration for the new iPhone, and when suggested to backup, choose the iPhone 4 one.
additional help: if you still have the iPhone 4 with all the data you want to copy, the quickest way its actually to back up to iCloud from the iPhone 4 and then do the Configuration for the new one... and shortly after connecting to a wifi network it will prompt you with a choose option between all your iCloud backups
    hope that solves it all

  • IPhone 6Plus on every reboot after putting in my password it opens to a small window asking for apple id password

everything works on phone and wow it's big compared to my iPhone 5s. went with space grey since i have had 3 white phones in a row. restored via iCloud backup. updated iTunes as i have about 3,000 songs. 250 bought the rest ripped to AAC from my cc's....what a pain but switched from my windows desktop to this new rMBP late 2013 for xmas and iTunes is slightly different on a mac than windows and where everything is stored on drive.
anyhow problem is every time i reboot after putting in my password and arriving at whatever page i left at i get a very small window asking for my Apple id password. Now the top half is pre filled in with the email address i use for iCloud/itunes/apple/etc.
i did see in settings there is a checkmark i cannot remove that says for apple password "ask immediately" there are no other choices. it can't be unchecked by any method i found.
    any help appreciated.

In case anyone else gets this I hit cancel once and it has never come back.

  • Apple ID password won't work but I am entering correctly

my iphone 5 told me my password was incorrect and so I completed a reset apple id password using the web.
When I enter the new password into my phone settings, it is rejected. It is not a case sensitive issue because I entered the password just as I have done here, and yet I was able to log into this support site with it, but can't retrieve my email by phone? This problem is also duplicated on my ipad2.

Are you positive you're using the exact Apple ID to update these apps that was used to originally ontain them? You can verify such by right-clicking one the apps, in your iTunes library, & selecting "Get Info". This will show you the Apple ID used to originally obtain the app...does it match on your phone?

"If you've forgotten the Apple ID password how did you log in to make the last post?"
Exactly! The password I used to log on here and write my post I figured was the same Apple ID password I would use to reset my computer login password. But my computer isn't recognizing it as the correct password so it wont let me update my login password. I have 2 user accounts on my computer.
As far as the link you provided, I already looked to that for help earlier. It states:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Users & Groups, click the lock to unlock it, then provide an administrator name and password. Select a user, then click Reset Password.
I did these steps, but I don't remember my admin password. The question is: How do I reset my admin password so I can reset my log in password.
Is my admin password the same password I use to log onto this website to post questions? If so, like I said previously, I already reset that password and my computer isnt recognizing it.

You should remove his AppleID and restore it as new.
