Mercury Engine in After Effects CS5.5? Or, why is After Effects so much slower the Premiere Pro?

Take this quote :
"by Todd Kopriva on Apr 25, 2010 at 8:08:14 am
'Mercury' is a marketing name for these performance improvements in Premiere Pro: - multiprocessing
- multithreading
- 64-bit application
- use of CUDA to to some processing on supported hardware
The first three of these are in After Effects CS5. (The first two have been in After Effects for much longer.)"
However, if I drop my Canon 5D Mark II footage (h264) into Premiere Pro it plays back SO MUCH better then the exact same footage in After Effects. Why is that? I DO NOT have an NVideo card and I have NOT applied any effects or scaling to the clip, just raw footage dropped into each program.
I do notice that After Effects has to render to play back (green bar being generated above footage). But it does slow very slowly, like 9fps. Premier Pro seems to cruise right along at near realtime. This is 24fps 1080p footage. One other point of interest, I have encoded the clip into Cineform codec as well. On Premier Pro I can tell a difference, the cineform scrubs a lot smoother then the original H264 clip. But, again, in After effects both the h264 and Cineform clips are very slow to render and scrub.
Any improvements along these lines for CS5.5?
Am I just missing something obvious?
Thanks for any info,

I think the problem is that hitting the space bar and hitting '0' (ram preview) both draw that green bar, and both seem to use it if it is already there. I guess the real difference is how that green bar gets generated. It does seem to get generated faster when I ram preview as opposed to hitting the space bar. Using both cores I have I guess (early 2009 24" iMac).
When you hit the space bar, AE TRIES to play back as it renders each frame.  Imagine what happens if it's a comp with 120 3D layers that all accept lights and cast shadows.  That's why you don't use the space bar.
In a RAM Preview, AE fills up the memory available to it with rendered frames, then plays them back from RAM.  Depending on processor speed, dimensions of comp & frame rate, this may or may not be real time, but there are ways to get real time.  With the space bar, you don't stand a chance at real time.

From what I hear new iMacs are due out soon with the new Thunderbolt (!) and Sandy Bridge processors/chipsets. Should be a LOT faster then what I have now.
For AE work I'd say maybe yes, maybe no.  To make AE REALLY speedy, you need a lot of processor cores and a boatload of RAM.  iMacs aren't known for either of those things.

In this page: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs6-32bit.html they tells that:"The support package installs CS4 versions of the Adobe applications to assist users who were transitioning to a 64-bit OS.If you currently have the CS4 32-bit installer and serial number, you can deploy without any additional steps." I didn't understand properly. Plz refer the page and tell me what it means.

  • Why is "edit in Audition" greyed out in Premiere Pro and After Effects?

Since the CC 2014 launch, the option in in Premiere Pro and After Effects to "edit in Audition" is greyed out. Right-clicking a clip in Premiere Pro doesn't have an option for Audition. I cannot send my compositions, sequences or clips to Audition for audio editing. I contacted an Adobe Support personnel earlier this evening. They suggested to go into my Mac's System Preferences and enable a root user, log out of my account, log into the root user, shut down and boot up into safe mode. None of these scenarios worked. It is still greyed out, in both user accounts.
Is this a known issue? I even uninstalled and reinstalled Audition. Still nothing. All my Adobe apps are updated. My Mac is updated. Again, never had this issue before.
    I'd appreciate any assistance!
    Thank you!
    Cheers,

I may have an answer for you, but not sure if my resolution will work for Macs.
First, here's my system and initial info. I'm using a work computer, operating system is Windows 7. I just upgraded to Adobe CC 2014 about a week ago, and I also uninstalled the previous versions of all my Creative Cloud programs after installing the new versions (CC 2014 doesn't just update the previous version, it installs a new program and doesn't automatically uninstall the previous CC programs). Not sure if the uninstall is necessary, for this resolution to work.
Anyway, after I installed Premiere Pro CC 2014 and Audition CC 2014, the Edit Clip in Adobe Audition command was available from the Edit menu in the Menu bar, but was disabled in the right-click menu for the sequence (for the right-click menu, it was visible, but greyed out and disabled). When I tried to use the command from the Edit menu in the Menu bar, it gave me a dialog box to fill out and it created a new folder (titled "Adobe Audition Interchange"). So, the command, when selected from the "Edit menu" obviously uses a different process than the command from the right-click menu. Anyway, I didn't want a new folder created or to fill out a dialog box, I just wanted it to behave like it used to. Basically, when I right-click the sequence and select Edit Clip in Adobe Audition from the right-click menu, it just opens Audition and the audio waveform is visible.
I was able to resolve this and get the right-click command working by reading a couple of articles on this same issue from Adobe CC (not CC 2014) and using those to figure out how to fix this in Adobe CC 2014.
    Here's what I did:
I had to locate my .sesx files in my system. They are NOT in the same location as they were for the previous version of CC (at least, they weren't for me). I had to use the Search command and look for .sesx extensions to locate them.
Found them under the path C:>Users>Public>Public Documents>Adobe>Audition>7.0>Session Templates. Note that (for me), there was a folder titled 6.0 on the same level as the 7.0 folder. I selected the 7.0 folder as that folder contained the most recent set of .sesx files. I checked the 6.0 folder and those were the .sesx files from the previous version, so I deleted that folder just as a clean-up step.
I right-clicked on one of the .sesx files in the Session Templates folder and then selected Open with from the right-click menu. The Open with dialog box displays and provides a list of programs.
I selected Adobe Audition CC 2014 from the list of programs (you may have to browse to find it) and then selected Always use the selected program to open this kind of file. I then clicked OK to submit the configuration command and close the Open with dialog box.
I restarted Premiere Pro CC 2014 and the Edit Clip In Adobe Audition command was now enabled on the right-click menu and was working properly.
I wept with joy..... OK, not really, but I'm always irritated at ridiculous regression errors and a lack of thorough testing of new software versions, so I am happy to resolve frustrating issues.
Don't know if this will help you, or if you already resolved your issue. Either way, good luck!

  • Premiere Pro CS5 never uses more than 15% of CPU, so, performs much slower than premiere 6.5!

    Hello.
I'm doing wedding videos for quite a while. My hardware included DV500DVD card and premiere 6.5, CPU is Core 2 Duo E8400, 2GB of RAM, Windows XP SP1 (DV500 can't work with SP2 or SP3).
The above mentioned system is quite old, and absolutely not usable for HD videos. So, I've decided to build another machine. The configuration is as follows:
OS: Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.
    M/B: Asus LGA 1155, H67 chipset.
    CPU: Intel Core i7-2600K
    RAM: 4GB DDR3
HDD: 2x 64GB SSD, 4 x 2TB SATA (RAID) (All HDDs connected to separate PCI-E controller, so intel chipset flaw is not an issue here)
I've recently downloaded and installed the trial version of Premiere Pro CS5, to see, how it suits to my needs. And I'm very dissapointed. I've started premiere, selected DV-widescreen preset, inserted two static pictures on timeline, and did an alpha blend between them. Then put movie to export. Not only it took way too long time to render, but it only used single core, and cpu usage is only 15% ! Just for curiosity, I've installed premiere 6.5 on same system, and it did that task about 10 times faster!
What is this, limitation of trial version, or just Premiere Pro CS5 can't be used with this modern CPU ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Alex

First off 4GB of ram is really to low for CS5. CS5 is 64 bit for a reason and requires far more ram. 2nd, what video card are you using?
As for the opteron system the other poster listed, you could get the lower end Intel platform and easily out perform that opteron system. A Geforce 450GTS video card would out perform that Quadro by 2 or 3 times and that card is barely over $100.
No offence but you can't run CS5 on minimal or very old specifications and expect the same results as everyone else or older software. If you can't upgrade the hardware then I suggest staying with the previous version until you can. The MPE engine requires allot of resources to function especially ram and your lower spec or older system will just bottleneck the pipeline rather than speed things up.

  • My prepro CS6 still uses mercury engine but new CC is not.  Why is this?

I get a message from pre pro CC saying the gpu accelerated engine is not available or not certified on this system, (when opening a project begun on CS6) yet my CS6 opens and uses it fine.  On fresh new projects, the CC shows it as greyed out in project settings.  What should I do?  Thanks in advance, from one who is really puzzled.

cc_merchant is correct. PPro CC will only let you select a GPU with at least 1GB of VRAM.  (Source)
If you used it in CS6 without issue, you might be able to use the GPU hack to get it to work in CC.  But that is at your own risk.

  • Dreamweaver CS5, MySQL, PHP: Why are views listed under tables in the connection

Using Dreamweaver C5 against a remote server with MySQL and PHP, I notifce the views I defined in the database, are list under tables in the connection window, not under views. Probably doesn't really matter, but I was wondering if there is a way to influence this - keeping views listed separately from tables.

    Hi
This has to do with the way MySQL stores the views in the database, (a similar problem occurs with procedures) in that they are stored as part of the entire database.
View on there own are not natively supported in dreamweaver.

  • After Effects CS5.5 - Lion: Crash on splash screen EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGABRT)

So one day, out of the blue, After Effects stops wanting to open. The worst part is, I can't think of any changes that would have caused this.
I am running After Effects CS5.5 (10.5.1) on my MacBook Pro 13" (Early 2011), which is running Mac OSX Lion. Here is my system profile (with some sections omitted).
Just a few weeks ago, I began to consistently receive this message during the AE splash screen:
    After Effects Alert
Last log message was: <140735295236448> <ASL.ResourceUtils.GetLanguageIDFromRegistry> <0> Unable to obtain the User 'Language' registry key at: Software\Adobe\After Effects\10.5.1\ Defaulting to 'en_US'.
    Here is a crash log.
    Any ideas?
    First attempt
I figured maybe I had a bad preference file, so I cleared my prefs. Nothing changed aside from a modified error message:
    After Effects Alert
    Last log message was: <140735295236448> <DynamicLink> <5> 0x114ee8418
    And a crash log.
Also, if I try opening AE again, after I cleared my prefs and opened it once, the error message returns to the "registry key" alert.
    Second, third, fourth attempt
So I uninstalled and reinstalled After Effects about 3 times. No change. I used the latest download from Adobe, and the original Master Collection image: no difference.
    Fifth attempt
I created a second admin account to see if this was an isolated issue. It isn't; same problem.
    Sixth attempt
I thought about QuickTime, so I opened up System Prefs, and uninstalled Perian. I left the prefpane there though.
Also, I have the latest version of Java.
Seventh attempt (Added 19 March 2012)
I used the Adobe Creative Suite Cleaner Tool to wipe out my entire Adobe installation. I still have the same problem after a reinstall. I'm going to try installing AE on my external drive next. This is really frustrating. Has anyone experienced this issue and found a resolution?
    Notes
Interestingly enough, all of the other Abobe CS5.5 apps I installed work fine:
    Bridge
    Photoshop
    Illustrator
    InDesign
    Premiere Pro
    OnLocation
    Extension Manager
    Added 1:54PM, 13 March 2012:
Also, opening up the render engine causes the same error message.

I just installed AE, have never used it, and am seeing it bail on startup with the same odd language registry key error. Please see my post on a related thread.
Any luck here? Would be nice to get AE to boot so I could evaluate it.

  • Importing from premiere pro cs5 to after effects cs5

hi, can anyone help me with this problem?
im editing some stuff in premiere pro cs5 and when i import it into after effects cs5 for colour correction and other effects all the transitions that i had from premiere will disappear. if someone can guide me step by step to this process it will be very helpful
    Thanks,
    Randolph Azzopardi

As Mylenium suggests, there are many ways to move information between Premiere Pro and After Effects. They are all outlined on this page: "Working with After Effects and Premiere Pro"
You didn't specify, but I'll assume as he did that you are exporting a Premiere Pro project from After Effects. That works by converting things from native After Effects to their equivalents in Premiere Pro; sometimes there isn't a good equivalent, so the conversion isn't perfect. The same conversion is done as is done for copying and pasting between After Effects and Premiere Pro. There's a set of tables that describe the conversions here.
The way to get perfect fidelity is to either use Dynamic Link (as Mylenium suggested) or render and export a movie from After Effects and import that into Premiere Pro.

  • Can't install After Effects CS5

    Hi all
I need help; I just picked up Adobe After Effects CS5, but I can't install it because it says it is "only installable on a 64-bit system." I'm running Windows XP SP3, and I see no reason why it shouldn't work. Adobe Support Advisor also picked up no issues with it.
Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

The CS5 video products - Premiere Pro CS5 , and After Effects CS5 require 64-bit processor and OS. Please see the system requirements page for details.

  • After Effects CS5 with GTX 260

I currently am running Windows 7, with AE CS5 with a Nvidia 9600GT card.
I am curious if upgrading to a GTX 260 will make any difference in RAM previews and drawing scenes for faster previews. And can this card be used to speed up PP CS5?
Is a faster CPU really the only way to speed up the after effects interface/composition timeline while creating a project?

I am curious if upgrading to a GTX 260 will make any difference in RAM
previews and drawing scenes for faster previews.
No, not really. After Effects uses the GPU for some things, but the advantages gained by beefing up one's graphics card are small compared to the benefits that can be gained with the same expense by installing lots of RAM and multiple fast local hard disks.
    And can this card be
used to speed up PP CS5?
See this page for a list of Nvidia cards that can currently make use of the CUDA support in Premiere Pro CS5:

  • After Effects CS5 beach ball

Does anyone else experience this and/or know of a cause/solution?
Working in After Effects CS5 I get a lot of 'spinning beach balls'.
The cause? I do not know and cannot guess.
It randomly happens, mostly, when moving a random item in the composition window.
"Pick it up", try to move it: no... beach ball! Wait for up to a minute,... and work can continue.
The app just completely freezes but luckily, most of the time, returns to its senses after about 30 secs, sometimes much more.
I've learned not to force quit every time because as said, it mostly returns to normal after a while.
Gonna force quit now: this time its been hanging for as long as I am typing this...
It is of course driving me totally crazy...

    OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3
    After Effects CS5
    Multiprocessing off
4,5 GB RAM available for AE
    OpenGL: enabled
Enable adaptive resolution when OpenGL is enabled: off
    Accelarate effect using OpenGL: enabled
Preview modes and viewer quality settings have no effect.
    Basically just the out-of-the-box settings.
    Comps are all 1280x720 / 25 fps
No footage, just RGB stills (JPEG, PSD, AI)
Effects applied: yes and no, that does not seem to matter.
    No 3rd party filters/effects/plugins used
The strange thing is that it happens with the most basic, no frills comp too...
In my opinion I am doing exactly the same things, or less, as I was doing in AE CS4, with no trouble at all.
