Merge 2 Address Books

Have a Desktop and Laptop with different entries in their respective address books. Want to import laptop address book data into the desktop address book.
Is there a way to import data from one Apple Address Book into another Apple Address Book?
Quite surprised it isn't obvious and that I can't find it in the knowledgebase, seems pretty basic.

I don't believe there is a simple way to do this.
Since entries in each Address Book are different, select only the entries in the laptop Address Book that you want imported into the Desktop Address Book.
To create a single vCard with multiple entries, drag the selected entries out of the Address Book window to the Desktop.
Use the Address Book import vCard feature on the Desktop selecting the single vCard with the multiple entries that was created on the laptop.

  • Having problems using mail merge from address book to word for labels

I've downloaded and opened avery labels to word and would now like to merge an address book from my mac.
When I get to the Mail Merge Manager and go to 'get list', my address book is not accessible.
I'm sure there's a simple way to do this but have not been successful googling or using the help options on both
    pages and address book.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

    Hi shaun
Looks like Pages '08 works the same as the previous version. You can't get data from multiple cards in one document. Try using Address Book's native label printing feature.
    Good luck!

  • Merging 2 address books without overwriting

I want to add the contents of the address book on my office desktop IMac running leopard 10.5.6 into the address book on my black macbook laptop also running 10.5.6. is there a way to do this without completely overwriting the contents on my laptop? I don't want to lose what's already there, only add in the additional names and addresses. There is no security issue. I own the company and both machines.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.

    Hi,
So here's what I did. My iMac G5 running Tiger blew up (logic board) and, while I wait for my new 27" iMac, I needed to put all the contacts from the old iMac on my macbook (running Leopard), where I keep different contacts. Since I couldn't open the iMac contacts and export them as vCards (because that computer was dead and all the user data is backed up on an external HD) for instance I needed to merge both address books another way.
After reading through all these discussions and the ones on macrumors, and realizing that Address Book doesn't come equipped to do this easily (probably to get you to pay for a mobileme account) I took a deep breath and just did the following: Created an archive of the existing contacts on my macbook and then moved the entire macbook ~library/application support/Address Book folder to some place safe just as a backup of those; then copied the same folder from my iMac backup archive into that location on the macbook. Voila, not only did all my old addresses appear, but all the macbook ones were there too, without having to reimport them. No idea why this worked but it did. WOuld love however if someone more knowledgeable has an explanation.
Couple of notes. I tried using migration assistant, but I couldn't figure out how to get it to just migrate the address book and nothing else from my iMac user account backup. Don't want all that stuff on my macbook. Also, if you try to import an Address Book Archive, it warns you that it will delete all current addresses, so won't work to merge two different address books. And if the macbook addresses had appeared magically, my plan was to export all the addresses from the iMac that were now available on my MacBook, then replace the ~library/application support/Address Book folders again and import the vCards.
Final note, you'd think it would be easier to synch the addresses books on two computers. I'm sure plenty of folks have both a desktop and laptop they use for different things but would like to have all their addresses available on both machines. But, as I said, I suspect it has to do with drumming up mobileme business.
Anyways, I hope this helps someone else and I'd love some feedback on why this worked.

  • Merge two address books

    hi i have two computers
how i merge the address books on both into one
also, how do i ensure i do not end up with duplicates
    thjanks

    Greetings,
If you are a MobileMe subscriber you can turn on Addressbook syncing on both computers. This will automatically compare both addressbooks and update them so they match.
    Alternatively:
_Go to each addressbook and click on "All Contacts" in the upper left
_Go to File > Export > Group vCard
_Take the resulting vCard file to the other computer and open the file up
__Once the vCard is imported go to Card > Look for Duplicates
____This will scan for and resolve any duplicates although you may want to go through afterword to make sure it go them all. Any remaining duplicates can be resolved by highlighting the duplicate cards and going to Card > Merge Selected Cards (or just deleting one of the duplicates)
    Cheers.

  • Review before merging duplicated Address Book Cards?

Is there a way to review the merges that Address Book will perform when I choose the "Look for Duplicates" command? (Maybe a third party app?) I do not want to accept Address Books merge choices before reviewing them. Thanks.

Yes, the problem is that pages puts each copy of the document in its own section. If you create a template with 8 copies of the label, it will fill in the fields from 1 address 8 times before going on to the next address. You need a template with one label in it, however when you do this you will get 8 sheets with one address label in each.
I got around this for a sheet of 3x7 labels as follows.
    - make sure the page margins match your label stationary.
    - format the page into the number of columns you want (3 for me, probably 2 for you), and set the gutters to match your stationary.
    - place the whole label in a single cell table - set the size of this to your label size using the graphics inspector.
    - do the mail merge
    - now use find and replace to replace all the section break characters with nothing.
    - You'll need to play around with the exact size of the table until it matches the label size. Note that pages creates a bit of extra whitespace between the tables, so you end up reducing the table size by about .1cm or so.
    - Now save your master document as a template so you can use it again.

  • How to Merge 2 Address Books

Hi folks. Just wanted to know if anybody knew how to merge 2 address books. I don't mean two identical or similar contacts. Whole address books.
A duplicated, put into B machine. They both took on separate lives.
This is what I am thinking:
    - A backed up.
    - B exported.
    - B imported into A, conflicts resolved (that could take some time, if it's manual, as my book has 1600 cards)
    - A (which is new), exported, put back into B.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers

Well, unfortunately, Address Book doesn't have a function to compare then only merge identical cards. Its four import options are Keep Old, Keep New, Keep Both, and Update. The Update option is closest to what you want, but it will assume that contacts with similar fields (like the John Q Public example I gave earlier) are the same person and will combine them into one (I found this out the hard way).
Your best bet I think would be to export All Contacts for each Address Book as a single vcard (this is the only format that Address Book natively exports), open in a spreadsheet/database program that can compare and merge identical fields, and do the combine there. Address Book can import .csv files, so something like Excel or Araxis Merge (➚) might be able to do it (I don't know if Excel's Merge Workbooks function is applicable in this case).
Perhaps other people have suggestions on how to only combine identical cards. I don't know programming, so AppleScript and Terminal puts me out of my depth. For what you want to do, Address Book's import/export functions are insufficient by themselves.

  • Problems with pages and mail merging from Address Book

hey guys. I have just created an invitation using one of the templates in Pages. this template is for four postcard size invites on one sheet of A4. i want to merge addresses from my address book. i can do the merge except that rather than four different contacts on each page i end up with four of the same on each page before it moves on the next contact on the next page. what i want to do is for it to merge one address per postcard. in Word i would put 'next' as the last field in the merge fields but i cant find a similar command in Pages. please can some advice?

I don't use Address Book for mail merging, but I tested this on a four page document and it worked for that so maybe it will work for your postcards. First, do your merge with full size pages and one address per page. Then in the print menu select Layout (drop down from Copies and Pages) and set it for 4 per Page (any direction you wish). That should print four different addresses on one sheet.

  • Merging Tiger Address book contents with ML Contacts

    Hi,
Since late December I've been the proud owner of a (gorgeous new) 27" iMac. This has replaced my old G5 workhorse which is running Tiger. The two are running side-by-side until I get everything migrated and converted.
For the past couple of months I've been adding new contacts, as they come in, to 'Contacts' on the iMac. However I have to bring over all my old contacts from Address Book on Tiger.
With hindsight I guess I shouldn't have done it this way but attempeted to bring them all over on day one. But I'm here now and I have lots and lots on Address book in Tiger and some in Contacts on Mountain Lion. I need both sets.
Any help as to how I can merge the two onto Contacts on the iMac will be much appreciated.
(If it makes any difference I don't use mail.app by the way but my Contacts are synced with my iPad).
    Bob.

On the Tiger machine, export the contacts as vCards. If you have notes, make sure to select the option to save the notes on export--I don't know if Tiger Address Book had those options. It should produce one vCard with all contacts in it, but it may make one for every card. I can't remember what Tiger will do.
Back up Contacts on the new Mac using File>Export>Contacts Archive.
Move them over to the new Mac and double-click the vCard to import them into Contacts. It should not ask you to replace them, but if it does, cancel the import.

  • How to merge two address books?

I am migrating from a G4 with 10.3.9 to a iMac with 10.5. We want to merge the addressbook with another iMac on 10.5 connected via ethernet.
The addressbooks used to be identical but the one from the G4 has fallen out of date. I would like to merge the two making the current 10.5 one dominate when they have duplicate entries.
What is the best tool with which to do this?
I am new to Macs so if there is a documented procedure that would be best. Any and all reference materials on the address book and it's structure would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

"The duplicates criteria is the email address and nothing else."
    Golden Shores,
I think your statement solves the problem that I have. No one responded to my post about duplicates, but your statement answers most of the issues.
First, I would like to trash my current OS X Address Book and start over. Which files should I pull from which folders? I won't really trash them but move them elsewhere as backups.
I have a Palm address book with 2400 contacts that can be easily exported to vCards. However, very, very few of these contacts include e-mail addresses. I also have an AOL contact (1000 contacts) list that includes First & Last Names and an e-mail address (or two) for each person. I can also export this list to vCards. Most, if not all of the names in the AOL list are also included in the Palm list. Based on what you said, if I merge these two lists, I'll end up with 3400 contacts with everyone from the AOL list being duplicated and Address Book will NOT recognize them as duplicates.
How can I merge my two lists without having to manually copy the e-mail address from the AOL list and add it the Palm list and then manually deleting the contact from the AOL list?

  • Merging 2 address books

    hi
I have 2 copies of an address book. one is older but has contacts with the correct addresses in it, the second is a newer version of the address book with about 150 additional entries in it but has no addresses. (bad blackberry sync, sent the bb with the correct addresses back to at&t accidently).
how can i merge these and have the correct addresses go to the proper contacts without manually doing it?

Are you using Mac OS X (10.2.x) as in your signature or Leopard 10.5.x?

  • Mail Merge from address book onto labels

    hi all,
if i split the page into the correct sized 8 boxes which correspond to my labels using the very helpful table inspector, i'm ready to mail merge, so i drag and drop from my purchased (very expensive) mailing list( which is in the apple address book), but it just duplicates the first name and address is there a way of doing this? whilst i'm not complaining about pages 3 this seems like an obvoius office requirement....HHHHEEEEELLLLPPPPPPP!!!!!!!
    best regards

    Hi shaun
Looks like Pages '08 works the same as the previous version. You can't get data from multiple cards in one document. Try using Address Book's native label printing feature.
    Good luck!

  • How to merge address book

How do I merge the Address Book on my iMac and the Contacts on my iPhone 4 into one list with everything?  I have had the iPhone for a month now and have not synced it with the iMac yet.

The template that I have created has 21 text boxes with address fields applied, so I thought I would end up with 21 different addresses on one page.
    You thought wrongly
Wrong! I have ended up with hundreds of pages with 21 of the same address per page, when really I want there to be 21 different addresses per page.
    This is the normal behavior
It's perfectly described in the Help which states:
Inserting Recipient Data for Contacts in Multiple Cards
You can personalize a document for multiple recipients by using multiple Address Book cards.
To insert recipient data for contacts in multiple cards:
Open a document that contains recipient fields.
Select the Address Book cards you want to use, and then drag them to a recipient field.
In the dialog that appears, choose New Document from the pop-up menu to create a new document that contains a section for each contact. Otherwise, choose “Send to printer” from the pop-up menu _to print a personalized copy of the document for each contact._
What am I doing wrong here? Can Pages handle this kind of thing as I know that it works perfectly for letters where you would only have one address per page.
You just didn't read sufficiently carefully the Help.
Pages is not designed to do what you want.

  • Merge Address Book creates 4 of the same addresses on a Post Card in Pages

I'm a little miffed right now because I just spend 20 minutes on the phone with apple support who told what I needed to do but couldn't tell me 'how' to do it.
I'm trying to print multiple postcards (pages default if 4 postcards/page), all I want to do is merge my address book onto these postcards with EACH SEPARATE POSTCARD having different address...that means on a page with 4 postcards, I have 4 different addresses. What currently is happening is that I'm merging about 200 addresses from my address book, and it creates the same address 4 times(on one page, all four postcards), then creates another page for the next address (4 more postcards on that page). This leads to 4x's the amount of postcards I need to actually print.
Support told me that I need to change the setting from 4 post cards per page to 1 post card per page...but couldn't tell me how to do that. They suggested I look in 'help' for an answer....which I always do before calling support anyway. Any help would be nice here. I thought my apple protection service/support plan would help in instances like these...and YES, this answer came from an 'applications specialist'.

    Cgip wrote:
Here's my question then, if the default in the postcard template is 4 post cards/page, how do I change it to one? This really seems like it'd be an easy fix, but I may be wrong.
    I wrote:
The merge tool merges one record in one document. If the document is a "one_page" one, this means one record per page even if the document uses only 1/4 of the sheet.
We are writing upon a MERGE tool, not upon a LABELIZER one !
The only soluce would be to use a custom paper size whose height and width will be half the standard one.
Doing that you will be able to print one card on one small page.
If you try to put a single card on a page you will leave 3/4 of the sheet white.
You may also build four templates,
    one with the card top-left
    one with the card top-right
    one with the card bottom-left
    one with the card bottom-right
So you will be able to print
1/4 of cards with template 1
1/4 of cards with template 2
1/4 of cards with template 3
1/4 of cards with template 4
As I wrote, "doing (exactly) what you wish can't be done with Pages".
This is what was responded many times.
What you wish has nothing to do with MERGE. It's the job of a LABELIZER tool !

  • Merge address book

    Hi,
I have gym member cards in a business card format and I want to merge my address book names to my cards which I have found in Edit >Merge Address Cards, but when I do that it merges one name to the 8 cards on one page, so for 8 names it makes 8 pages, I would like that it merges a different name to each card because I have about 300 cards to make.
    Thanks for your help

    Hello
I repeat, the merge function does exactly what it is designed to.
It put infos grabbed from the database (here AddressBook) in a document whose size is at least one page.
I understood what you asked for but nobody can help you to force an application to do what it is not designed to do.
You would be able to do what you ask for with the DB modulus of AppleWorks but as iWork doesn't contain such a tool the feature is unavailable.
It's one of the problems which push me to ask for a true database at the bottom of all my messages.

  • Pages merges address book cards, but in what kind of order?

This is crazy! If I open an envelope template and merge an Address Book group to a new document the order of the names is completely random. It is not in alphabetical order or any kind of order at all.
    What gives?
If I go back through the envelopes to make sure they all printed correctly I have to sort them manually to see if any are missing.

You need to buy the RAM in MATCHING sets - so you'll need 2 sticks of 4GB RAM. MacBook Pros prefer that both slots are populated with MATCHED pairs.
See the Crucial website and click on the System Scanner to get the correct RAM upgrades for your computer. You do know that you can upgrade to 16GB?
