Merge develop settings for a set of images in a back up file

Hi
The situation I have is a folder with 2,000 images in it - I started developing from image 1 and moved forward through them developing as I went.
Lightroom crashed and so I restored from a back up, but still I lost about 4 hours work.  I couldn't face redeveloping the exact same images I had just done again, so I went to image 2,000 and started working back through the folder, figuring that I would have renewed enthusiasm for the images I'd done but lost the develop settings on by the time I'd gone through the new ones.  I backed up as I went, scared that I would lose a lot of work again.  So, in short, I have a folder with half the images developed and a chunk in the middle, still to be developed.
I have just opened the catalogue to sit down and develop the remaining images and I note that the images from say 1,300 - 2,000, which I had previously developed have lost their settings again.  I went back through my back ups and I have a back up file with them done, but it is from over a week ago.
My question is - can I selectively copy the develop settings for images 1,300 - 2,000 on that specific folder from an old back to the current files without having to overwrite everything from that old back up, which would in turn overwrite work I have done since on other folders?
Would really appreciate help on this one.
RAWs were converted to DNGs at import.
Thanks

Hi Geoff
Thanks so much for this - it did the trick!  Hours saved!
For others who may read this item, it doesn't restore the individual steps you took during developing, it works in much the same way as the 'copy/paste previous settings' option in  that you get one line saying that settings were pasted....but that was good enough for me!

  • LR3 reset ALL develop settings for photos transferred to external HD

I recently moved all of my photos from 2009 to an external HD to save some space on my laptop. I pointed the catalog to the new location and they show up, but the develop settings for ALL of the photos have been reset. I can get back to what I had done by clicking each photo's history just prior to the reset, but why did it reset and is there a way I can get it to un-reset??

I suppose you moved the files from outside of LR. What steps did you take to "point the catalog to the new location"?

Are you saying that you actually see a "Reset" entry in the history of each photo?

  • Applying Develop settings to new batch of images

I recently processed a load of raw images, changing most of the settings in the Develop menu, including adjusting the tone curve.
I have a new set of images I want to process in exactly the same way, but I can't seem to recover the settings from the first batch. It seems like this should be a fairly simple process - any tips?
I have a .dcp profile that I assumed I would be able to apply, but it doesn't appear to do anything.

Why not create a preset and then you can apply it to any batch of selected images or on import. Start by choosing one of your finished images and in Develop click on the plus sign to the right of presets in the left hand panel. Give it a name and save it as a user preset.

  • Merge "Develop Settings" instead of replace?

    Hi there,
I know that I can copy develop settings from one photo to another.
This overwrites the settings in the target photo.
How can I merge the settings of 2 source photos into a third photo?
I have certain adjustments in A, certain in B and want C to include all of these settings
    Thanks a lot,
    Christoph

Off the top of my head, I don't think you can merge these from two different photos to a third photo.
Maybe if you were really smart and wrote the edits to XMP and then edited the XMP with some sort of text editor, you might be able to merge the results, but that's pure speculation on my part.

  • Copy/Paste Develop Settings for multiple images

I'm trying to update some settings on multiple images. In Develop mode, I start by making the corrections to a single image, and then click the "Copy ..." button. I then select multiple images in the Filmstrip and click "Paste". This works just fine, but only on the 1st image/highlighted image, and not the whole selection. Am I doing something wrong here? Shouldn't I be able to update multiple images, at once, like a batch process?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Lee Jay
How do you know this is on purpose? It seems like a bug to me.
    See this thread: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2951457
If your reasoning was correct, how come the settings do paste to the entire target selection and not just the active image when the toggle in the lower right hand side of the screen is switched to Auto Sync?
Would love to hear more of your insight, because this is really confusing me.

  • What are the best settings for a retina display image?

If we Export for Web then view it on a retina display monitor, the image lines look blurry and it's not as crisp as non-retina display monitors.
What are the best settings when intended for retina display monitors while keeping the file size down?
    Thanks!

Mark, yes a DVD will play back on a HDTV, just the quality will not match the capability of the playback device. This is certainly the easiest approach though.
As the article you referenced says, ensuring that your previews are set to a larger pixel dimension than your required output will ensure maximum quality, given that you will more than likely have movement on the images in the slide show I would suggest going with pixel dimensions that are at least 1920px.
Let us know how you go.

  • Lightroom 2 develop settings not stored in Tiff images

    Hello,
I'm running windows XP, LR 2.0 and have all the Metadata changes checked.
When I edit a photo in LR the develop setting do not show up in any other Photo editor, Photoshop CS3, ACDSEE, etc..
I've tired writing metadata to files and the changes are seen other than LR. I want to upload these images to a stock photo web site.
    Regards,
    Jeff

    Jeff,
if you want to see changes done in LR also in other programs like ACDsee and other you don't need to export changes but the whole picture.
If you checked "automatically write changes to xmp" it doesn't mean you can see the changes in other programs. It only means your changes are written in xmp file (raw) or in the first (normally invisible) part in jpeg or tiff (you can see it if you open jpeg in notepad). But it doesn't mean your file is rendered (raw) or your bitmap file is changed in a visible way. Frankly to say LR doesn't export changes but only a prescript which says what changes should be done if you will use this picture in a program which can read this prescript (today it is only LR and up-to-date CameraRaw).
You can export everywhere. If you want to see changes in other programs, your folder doesn't need contain changes (prescripts) but whole changed picture.

  • Lost all settings for Mail, setting up new account causes Mail to crash

Not sure if this problem is related to a recent archive and install or the recent 10.4.8 update, but a user's email on my G5 apparently lost all her mail, settings, etc. When Mail was clicked on, a series of new account windows appeared, which I filled out with the relevant info, but when i clicked Done, I get the prompt: A keychain cannot be found to store "user's name." It gives me the option to set to default or cancel. When I click on cancel, a summary of all the relevant info appears in a window, but when I attempt to open Mail it always crashes. Not sure where to go from here?
We have another computer (G3) running 10.3.9 with her Mail app working. Is there any way to transfer or import her Mail app to this computer?

Nol longer relevant since updating to Leopard.

I'm working on a document in Swedish, I have a Swedish keyboard.
All of a sudden something has happened, the letters appearing in the document are not the same as on my keyboard.
I can't seem to find any place to reset to Swedish characters...
Only happens in ID, so it's not an overall setting.
    What to do??

  • HT5796 I restored my phone after resetting all settings for an international unlock.  I had backed up everything under Gail-PC as the device name Itunes.  After I restored the device and went to sync my phone it now says the last time i backed it up was M

I had Sprint unlock my phone for international use.  I backed up my phone to Gail-PC on Itunes and then reset the iphone 4S.  When i went to resync the phone after the reset my computer now says the last time it was backed up was March 2013.  I backed it up prior to and had no computer error.  Now it shows the divice Gail-PC no longer exists in Itunes and only Gail's Iphone shows up.  I upgraded to IOS 7 recently, I don't know if this could be an issue.  Help what do I do know? I have lost all my messages and data from the last year.  This computer does not have a backup.  I only have 5 Gb space on Icloud so the Imessages did not get saved there.  Is there any help for me now?

Thanks for the reply!  Yeah that's pretty much what I figured.... I just find it upsetting that it didn't tell me the reset had anything to do with backing up data and made it sound like it would save everything on my phone regardless.  Thanks again for your response

  • Paste Develop Settings into multiple images ?

I develop a particular image that has similar light and exposure to many that follow, so I want to past those develop settings into the several images that follow. I highlight the several remaining images at the bottom shown thumbnails. I paste the develop setting. The setting seems to be applied to only the LAST image that I selected. Is this behaviour as expected?
I've only been able to manually paste the development settings into each of the images, ONE AT A TIME, which is quite tedious, compared to being able to do it to a group of images at once.
I would prefer to be able to paste the development setting to multiple images in one fell swoop.

Or use Auto Sync mode in Develop. Select multiple images in filmstrip or in Library's grid, then in Develop Ctrl/Cmd (Win/Mac) click the Sync button and it'll change to Auto Sync. Once it's on, it stays on. I almost always work this way - YMMV.
The modal thing is no big deal, just smoke thrown up by Aperture fans who're smart enough to spot differences and creative enough to twist them into a way of justifying their fanboyism. Library works on cached data, Develop accesses the original data. Once you get into Auto Sync, and learn your keyboard shortcuts, modal is nearly irrelevant.

  • Best Settings for making a Secure, Reliable Disk Image?

    Hi guys!
Can anybody direct me to the best settings that can be used to make a secure Disk image using the MacOS X disc utility?
I wish to make my computer family friendly, yet keep my proffessional and private files secure/private and innaccesible to children and unautorized individuals. I have heard that files saved inside encrypted images (password protected) are also not indexed in the finder wich is perfect for the privacy I seek (this is true right?).
I know how to access the tools, but the right settings for making a trustworthy image remain elusive. Already tried with some of the formats and information placed inside...started becoming glitchy and unreliable, even after removing the files and making them unencrypted again.I'm abaout to try with the HFS+ format.
I cannot lose the files I wish to protect. But I need to secure them and if anything, be capable of backing up the image by copying it into a HFS+ formated external hard drive every once in a while. Can this be done?
Is there a risk of data loss in the encryption process? One of my external drives (FAT 32) even started to make unrelated neighboring folders "disappear" after making an image inside ( I though I could make an image anywhere and save stuff securely at that point...but nearly losing the entire cashe of info made me backtrack and simply avoid the process until i'm sure of what I'm setting up---so many compatibility problems!)
    • Don't know what settings to use.
    • Some say there is a small chance of a disk image being damaged or corrupted (for no reason whatsoever)...but having trouble right off the bat, with a brand new image worries me. WHAT ARE THE RISKS? Is the system unrefined and unrealiable?
I plan to make the Image a sparse file, using the HMS+ format, 400GB....regular encryption. I plan to copy all my sensitive stuff inside and delete unprotected copies. Risky? Are images unreliable in general? or where my glitches abnormalities?---Can the images hold collections of files or do they become more unrealiable the bigger they get (what I fear). I don't wan't to have to make dozens of images to protect my files.
Can a external drive be formated to HMS+ and accept  a drag and dropped copy of a 400GB image? FAT32 will just not accept it. Would there be risk of the image being damaged in the transfer? NOTE that copying the data into an external drive would be to have a secure backup of the data. If I can't trust the backup to be carbon copy intact...it isn't a backup.
Securing files is really proving to be bothersome, despite having "refined" tools at my disposal.
    Thanks for your help!

Do you place your backups on external disks? Are your external disks formatted HFS+?
Can HFS+ Disk image be Drag dropped into a HFS+ formatted external disk in order to copy them? or is the process blocked like what happens to large Disk images in FAT 32?
I'm trying to lock on to the right format to apply to everything. My steps will be:
Make the image: So far a sparse image in HFS+ format, 400 GB, No partition map.
Drag sensitive work to Disk image. Once transfer in complete delete originals.
Format an external disk into the journaled HFS+ format. Drag drop Secure disk image to back it up.
Do you see any problems with this process? Anything i'm missing?

  • I want to set Firefox to never remember history. When I do this using the tools tab and click okay, it goes right back to "Use Custom Settings for History". I don't want that.

I know how to manage privacy using the tools tab at the top of the address bar, or so I thought. I want to choose "Never Remember History". When I do that, and click "OK", the next time I check the privacy settings, the history is right back to "Use custom settings for history". I don't want this. Also, I don't want to use autocomplete for forms, but I can't get those settings to stay, either. I basically don't want info. stored on this computer. My system was hacked several months ago, by some joker who named all my system folders a racist slur (I reported it to Norton, and a technician had a look at it). Anyway, I want to keep things as safe as possible. Please allow me to delete all my history when I close Firefox. I don't really like Google, either, because they have a reputation for not respecting people's privacy. I don't like that I didn't have an option to uncheck google's toolbar when I installed Firefox.
    Thank you.

    That is probably OK.<br />
You may have changed one of the other history or cookie settings.
If Firefox shows the "Use custom settings for history" setting then that is an indication that at least one of the history and cookie settings are not the default to make you aware that changes were made.

  • What happens when there is a conflict between develop settings stored in file metadata, and the catalog?

    Hello,
Wondering if someone could quickly help me with understanding how develop settings are read back into lightroom... (I'm using lightroom 3.6) as I've just had a bit of a panic that my mis-understanding of the system might have screwed things up a bit!
As I do all my image tinkering on a laptop with a small disk, I am often archiving directories of images to an old server we have, and then just bringing them back onto my laptop whenever I need them again. I have a single lightroom catalog on my laptop, and I thought (I now think wrongly!) that all my develop settings updates were stored solely in the lightroom catalog on my laptop, and as long as I kept a copy of the original jpeg images knocking around somewhere so that I could restore them to my laptop when needed, that I could always get back to the most recently edited version of my images. Often I copied a directory of images from the server to the laptop, edited them with lightroom, then deleted the jpg files from the laptop thinking the originals left on the server would be sufficient to restore my work later.
However recently just before deleting a batch of jpgs from the laptop, I did a quick compare with the server and was horrified to realise that the files where different, and that changes *are* written to the jpeg files! Looking in lightroom I have the 'Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG [etc] files' turned on.
    My questions would be:
1 - Have I lost work by effectively deleting the metadata from the jpeg files or is it also preserved in the catalog?
2 - What would happen if some develop settings for an image were stored in the catalog, and a completely different set of develop settings were stored in the file - which would take priority?
    3 - Have I screwed up and if so is there anything I can do to minimise the damage? : {
    Many thanks for any advice!!
    Nicola

    1. Lightroom ALWAYS stores the edits in its catalog file.
    2. Lightroom ALWAYS uses the edits in its catalog file. The information stored in the JPG is NEVER used to display the image in Lightroom.
    3. As long as you don't eliminate the photo from the catalog, you are fine, your edits are present in the catalog file and Lightroom will use those to display the image.

If you have moved the photos to the server, using Lightroom (or using Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders), there's no need to bring them back to your laptop. You can leave the photos on the server, and access them on the server, and everything works properly

  • Develop Settings: jpg/xmp

    Hello,
first off some background, that I would appreciate corrections on, if I understood something wrong.
    a) Lightroom saves the settings it will apply to files in the database, but if the catagog option "Automatically write changes into XMP" is checked, LR will create a XMP file all files in which it stores the develop settings.
    b) This setting applys to all files (raw, DNG, JPG, TIFF, PSD) unless the setting "Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF and PSD files", in which case XMP files are not created for the named file-types, where the develop settings are saved into the metadata of the file itsself.
    And now my problem:
I always have the "Automatically write changes into XMP" settings turned on, so that on a database corruption the develop settings are directly associated with the files and can be re-imported to another database. I have imported some 15000 files (60% raw, 40% jpeg) and have started to develop them. All raw files have a XMP file associated with them and modifications to Keywords and develop Settings lead to the XMP files being changed and the raw files remain unchanged. But... for JPEGs LR saves all changes into JPEGs according to the "Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF and PSD files" setting, which was on for some reason or other. Since it would be so much easier for incremental backups if the JPGs were not modified and only XMPs were changed, I turned the "Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF and PSD files" setting off. But nothing changed. Still no XMP files are appearing despite changes to the files.
Is there any way to force LR to move the develop settings from within the JPGs to external XMP files?
    Thanks all!

    inforumman,
    Your questions:
    a) Correct, but saving to XMP does NOT replace saving in the Lr catalog. Save to XMP is in addition to saving in the catalog.
    b) The wording "saving the XMP" is a bit misleading, insofar as an XMP-file will be created only in case of Raw files, whereas with TIFFs, JPGs, PSDs the metadata (edits or other metadata) is written into (the header of) the image file - but NOT into the image pixels.
    c) As LRuser24 already said, it is not possible to have Lr write an XMP-file for JPGs, or for TIFFs, or for PSDs.
