Merge Digital Images with HDR

A recent issue of PCMagazine, 6/27/2006, had an article entitled "Cool Photo Projects" which explained merging digital images with HDR. It mentioned that Photoshop CS2 will do that. Can it be done with Photoshop Elements 3? If not, is there a workaround that someone can suggest?
It does indeed look like a "cool project".
Thanks. Eva

I didn't know what HDR was, but read about it here: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/hdr.shtml
Seems to me that there's very little you could do in PSE to emulate this, as it's built-in functionality in CS2.
Having said that, taking a series of identical images, at different exposures, and simply using the best parts is quite possible.

I use an Mac OSX 10.6.8 with iPhoto 09 to download digital images from two Canon DSLRs. Until the last week, there has been no problem whatever in launching the import procedure once the USB connection has been connected and the camera switched on. Now the process will not kick in at all for either camera.  I can't find a solution through iPhoto help or from other sources.
Any ideas to fix?  (I admit I have not tested the USB cable at this time).

    What does "kick in" mean?
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

  • Print dialogue box not opening with HDR image

I created an HDR image using HDR Efex Pro 2 a month ago and printed it.  It is saved as a psd file.  I went to print it yesterday and the print dialogue box won't open. I've tried alt tab to check the box isn't open and hidden.  I've re-created the image and the result still won't open.  No other images are causing this problem.  It's probably something really simple and hopefully someone out there can shed light for me.  Thanks

Thanks for that - I wondered about the 32 bit/channel but am bemused as to how I got the first print a month ago!!  Now toned which and in 16 bit and print dialogue box opened.
    Thanks guys

  • Problems with HDR in Photoshop CS 5

I have a problem when merging images to HDR in PS5.5. My final image is not good, the colors are lousy and the picture is very low on contrast. I have tried with different images, and I get the same result every time.
In the example I've used three jpegs.
I’ve searched the net for solutions, but I can’ find any.
    Anyone got an idea?

I exchanged a few ideas about this with Klaus Herrmann - aka Farbspiel - of HDR Cookbook fame a while back.  Klaus said that while he could get more highlight detail using Photoshop, as opposed to Photomatix, for the merge to HDR stage, Photoshop resulted in undersaturated images with colour casts.  I had the same results so never used Photoshop's HDR feature, but suggested that if the image was important enough, you could produce both Photomatix and Photoshop images from the same bracketed set, and use the Photoshop version as a sharpening aid at the end of the process.  I never felt anal enough to actually try this, but I had in mind using an alpha channel mask from the more detailed Photoshop version for High Pass sharpening the Photomatix image.
Klaus gets amazing detail from his HDR images:
I'm sorry for the large image size, but could not get a link from the smaller versions.
But if you check out one of his amazing How-it-was-done videos you'll see that he puts a lot of work into them.   You'll also see how a detailed alpha channel mask would help his workflow.

  • A image with a drop shadow on a shaded background

When I make a copy from my color printer of my PDF that has a image with a grey drop shadow on a grey shaded background. I get a shaded box around the image. This does not happen when I print from my b&w laser printer. The PDF was exported from Indesign, I had digital prints from the Indesign file and they are ok.

    Hello Quincy62301 ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having some issues with the scanning due to an error code.
I suggest that we start off by running the HP Print and Scan Doctor.  Please take a screen shot of any error codes or messages so that I can see exactly what you see.

  • What is the HP Digital Imaging Monitor? Does it apply to my OS, Windows 7?

What is the HP Digital Imaging Monitor? Does it apply to my OS, Windows 7? I want to delete the icon from the task tray (tool bar in lower right hand corner of screen) as I never use it.
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
Digital imaging monitor is a part of the HP software that communicates with your HP printer. This program enables you to read the inklevels, get an out of paper message, scan from the unit to the comuter and so on. Its not neccesary, but it will limit the printers use if you remove it.

  • Colour in black and white digital image

how do i colour in a black and white digital image please. I have never used this programme before, so any idiots guide you can give me would be great.

Go to Image Menu>Mode and be sure that RGB color is checked
Open your image, duplicate the background layer, shut off the visibility of this layer by clicking on the eye icon, and work on background copy layer
Set your foreground color chip to red (I used this for the blouse)
In the tool box, activate the magic wand tool. On the tool's option bar, check "contiguous", and set tolerance to 40.
Click on the blouse. You will see "marching ants", indicating that the blouse is selected
Go to Edit menu>Fill selection and under contents use foreground color
Press CTRL+D on keyboard to get rid of the marching ants
Next I worked on the skirt with green foreground color, and repeated steps 2-5. And so on .
Note, that in order to get a clean selection you may have to reduce the tolerance setting. For the skirt-hem, I had to go down to 8 in each pleat.
Here is a partially completed rendition for your reference.

  • Stitching images with overlays

I am stitching one large imaq image from several smaller images using image to image copy.  The small images each have several overlays.  After the image to image copy the overlays from the small images are lost. How can this be avoided.  Or at least how can I get the overlay image information to manipulate it and reapply the data.
Is this possible, it seems that it should be.

The image overlay data is lost when performing the image to image copy because you lose the origin (0,0) of the small image, to which all overlays are relative.
You are going to need to user the IMAQ set overlay properties VI to configure the behaviors of the overlays before you copy them.
An easier method would be to merge the overlay with the picture before copy, but you would lose pixel data under the overlay, and the image would convert to RGB.

  • Images with Picture Frame stroke not printing?

Does anyone have a known solution to an issue in which an image with a stroke of "Picture Frame" applied will not print?
    More details...
    - Created pages document (originally in '08 version of Pages, then upgraded to Pages '09 to see if that fixed it -- it did not)
    - Printed document in both both Pages version. All assets within document printed correctly with exception of photos that have stroke of "Picture Frame" applied.
    - Printed to PDF. Opened and printed from Preview. Again, all assets within document printed correctly with exception of photos with stroke of "Picture Frame."
    - Tried modifying print settings to "fit in page" as well as color correction. Same symptoms applied.
    - One solution (that's not the desired behavior but should be acknowledged) -- removing stroke allows images to print.
    Other:
    - Problem is reproducible across both versions of pages.
    - Problem may be same as seen in other searches found here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3005994?start=0&tstart=0 & here: http://forums.cnet.com/7723-21571_102-378574/pages-09-printing-problem/ & here: http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/images-graphic-design-digital-photography/23980 6-framed-pictures-wont-print-iwork-pages.html
    Set-up:
    - iMac running 10.7.3
    - Started with iWork '08, updated to Pages '09
    - HP LaserJet CP1025nw
    Any advice much appreciated!

Thanks for all your help, fruhulda.
    Tried:
    deleting plist
    uninstalling Pages
    trying a different account
    updating firmware
    trying a different printer
The only thing that works -- which also worked for you -- was something other than this printer. And even with a firmware update, it's not working.
I'd say this is an HP CP1025nw problem, which kind of hurts given it's a newer printer for us.
Suppose it's best to consider this closed and unsolved.

  • Adobe Camera RAW (All Versions) Import Canon .CR2 / RAW images with an orange / green color cast.

All versions of Adobe Camera RAW including the latest 7.3 import .CR2 images with a greenish / orange color cast.
Tested on 7D, and 5D III
Makes Hardwood floors, and flesh tones look abysmal.
Canon's Digital Photo Professional renders the colors fine, as does ACDSee 5.0 Pro (when viewing)  Exporting from ACDSee however is another story as things look even worse than Adobe.  DPP can export perfectly.
Changes to Color Gammut / Space have little or no effect.

    Good day!

  • When shooting source images for "HDR Pro", is it better to using 16 bit TIFF rather than 8 bit JPEG?

When shooting source images for "HDR Pro", is it better to using 16bit TIFF rather than 8 bit JPEG?

Yes, you will bracket the exposure.
Take as many shots as you need. Take a normal shot, underexpose twice or even three times and then overexpose twice or three times.
That's how the camera will register all teh details in the image - in the highlights, in the shadows and in the midtones. When you bracket, remember to change shutter speed (if you shoot manual, that's what I do), not the aperture because you will end up with different depth of field.

  • Merge split image segments

    Dear Friends,
in an external PDF all images are splitted to smaller segments.
I heard this is quite common in PDF generation due Postscript.
I am placing this external PDF on an Indesign document page which is also exported again as a final PDF/SWF/JPEG.
But in the final PDF/SWF/JPEG there are white lines visible in the images, when they appear, allways between two image segments.
I heard this is due to rounding errors of position x-/y-coordinates of these image segments rendering them not perfectly onto their intended position.
I think about two general solutions:
Merge all image segments to a complete image.
Being able to position these segments with lock / automatically to make them perfectly edge to each other (but what would be with these rounding errors?).
This is a quite common problem to designers who want to further use the ressources or pages of an external PDF.
Often the senders of those external PDFs have not even got the original data (careless/lost/etc.).
It would be great if there is a reliable, solid solution to this problem.
Thank you for answers in advance!
    With best regards
    Inno

A naive (but possibly sufficient) implementation could just be to keep a table mapping (x,y) pairs to countries. To keep the table smaller, you could map 10x10 blocks of pixels to countries.
Ultimately this is about storing and then managing data.
One hack (in my opinion) is to check the color of the clicked pixel in the image of the map. But that is nasty for a variety of reasons (such as, it keeps you from being able to easily change the map image, and things like text in the map (like the names of countries) kind of screws that up. But it's an option.
You can also keep lists of pixels in sequence describing a polygon, and then use certain algorithms (which I don't recall right now) to determine whether a given point is inside or outside a given polygon.
Also you can do things like "binary space partitions", I think.
These last two things are computer graphics techniques, and are non-trivial to implement. I dimly recall them from college but recall no details. You can get a computer graphics textbook (which tend to be expensive) to get more info, or these days there's probably a wiki about it somewhere.
But I'd suggest keeping it modular. Add a layer of abstraction, writing an API around this functionality. Then write an implementation with a simple table of locations or blocks of locations, and if this proves to be insufficient later, swap it out with something more sophisticated.
