"merge duplicate contacts" - not working

I have roughly 3600 contacts, many of which are duplicate names. I ran 'merge duplicate contacts' and Address Book came back and advised there were 1500 duplicates (which seemed high but, hey). I said, yes, 'merge' and it went off for two to three minutes and finished. There was no change in the number of contacts! All dups were still there.
So I ran it again and Address Book found no duplicates, even though there are still as many as there were originally.
Mystified.

PLease help me in resolving this problem
Hi,
I'm sure that people will be happy to help you if you would explain better your problem.
You simply wrote "is not working". Don't you think it is a bit too generic?
Do you get an Oracle error, data are not updated as expected?
We don't know what your problem is. Sorry.
Please follow Paul advice and check the FAQ which is explaining how to post a question.
A well written question will definitely get a good answer.

  • Merge duplicate contacts in icloud

How do I merge duplicate contacts in i cloud?

My girlfriend had the same problem updating to iOS6. Firstly all the contacts disapeared from her iPhone. So I had to synchronize with her mac plugging in the iPhone to iTunes and checking info->synchronize contacts and info->advanced->contacts and press synchronize. So I got all the contacts back.
However I wanted the advantages of iCloud and tryed to synchronize with iCloud. After some changes on the configuration on the iPhone (I can not reproduce what I have done exactly) I ended up with double or even trippled contact entries.
So i did the following (make sure that all the contacts you like to have are on your mac book!):
    1. I checked on www.icloud.com/contacts if the contacts are really doubled and they were!
    2. then i disabled the iCloud contact sync in the settings on the iPhone and chose to delete all contacts.
    3. then I deleted all the contacts on iCloud (lower left button -> first 'select all' and then 'delete')
    4. then I synchronized the iPhone contacts with the Mac book over iTunes (checking info->synchronize contacts and info->advanced->contacts and press synchronize)
    5. then I checked that all the contacts are only once on the iPhone
    6. then I enabled the the iCloud contact sync in the settings on the iPhone
    7. then I checked in www.icloud.com/contacts if the contacts are there only once.
I hope this helps you saving 2 hours in your life (as much as I spent last night to figure out what to do).
    Have fun

  • Merging duplicate contacts

In Contacts, can you merge duplicate contacts with slightly different info?

Are you using iCloud to store your contacts? If so, then shut off contacts in your Mail, Contacts & Calendar settings for that account, delete them, then turn them back on. Also, verify what your "Default" account is in the same setings area for new contacts.
Careful with the Facebook app. It seems to want to rename everything in your contacts if you allow it. Be very afraid of this "feature". Luckily I had a recent backup on my laptop.

  • Merge calls is not working in my iphone

merge calls is not working in my i phone i checked it for 5 times not working help me i am new for this

    Hello naveen_199155,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you would like to merge calls together on your iPhone, but it is not working as expected. There are a couple of different resources I would suggest reading over in this situation.
First, depending on whether you have a GSM network iPhone or a CDMA network iPhone, the Conference calls feature may work differently. Please review the first attached article for this information.
iPhone: Understanding phone features - Apple Support
    Conference calls
Supports up to five calls simultaneously
Supports up to two calls simultaneously.
CDMA networks may not be able to add, swap, or merge calls in certain situations. See the iPhone user guide for more details.
Another valuable resource, just to ensure the correct steps are being taken to set up a conference call, is the iOS 8 User Guide (page 51). Please read over this for more information on the process as well as why the feature may not be working if you are using a CDMA iPhone.

  • Ringtone for individual contacts not working help!

I have had my Iphone for a week or so and I can not get individual ringtones for each contact to work. The guy at the ATT store was kind enough to transfer my contacts from my old Razr. ALL my calls are reverting to the default tone. This is very irritating. I can not find any duplicate entries in my contact list. I am on the verge of wiping all my contacts and starting over. Can someone help? Running OS 3.1.3.

Sorry user error.. There is a sneaky little toggle switch right above the volume controls... It was in silence mode... Doh!

  • Exchange notes and contacts not working on yosemite

After installing yosemite my contacts and notes are not working, I click on them to be incuded and it automatically unclicks them. Please help

You can tell what account they are in by opening Contacts, tapping Groups, then selecting your non-iCloud groups one at a time to see the contacts that belong to each non-iCloud account.
Let's assume that they are scattered across multiple iCloud accounts as you stated.  To get them all in iCloud, do the following:
Go to Settings>iCloud, turn Contacts to Off, choose Delete from My iPhone when prompted (they will still be in iCloud).
Download the app My Contacts Backup to your phone.  (You'll need to get the "Pro" version if you have more than 500 contacts that you need to copy to iCloud.)  Use this to backup the remaining contacts on your phone (from the other accounts) as a vCard attachment to an email that you send to yourself.  Confirm that you have received the email.
Go to Settings>iCloud and turn Contacts back to On.
Go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Default Account (in the Contacts section), set this to iCloud.
Go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars...tap each of the other accounts that you are syncing contacts with (such as Gmail) and turn off contacts syncing.  This will prevent having duplicates when you re-import them from the backup your made earlier.
Open the My Contacts Backup email and tap the attachment to import the contacts from the other accounts back to your phone.  They should be in iCloud, and as a result, will sync to your other devices.

  • "Do not import duplicates" is not working

The "Do not import duplicates" box is checked for all imports but is not working.  This is both for my Nikon DSLR, my Canon S-95 and my iPhone. This was happening with both Snow Leapord and Lion as operating system.  I have been using Aperture since the first release and only in the last few months has this been an issue.  Any thoughts?

There's a known (and old) bug when duplicate identification fails on photos
that have been imported from another catalog.
    Sent from phone.

  • Adding Faces to Address Book Contacts-Not working!

I tried adding some faces to my Address book's contacts, but the "Face" icon, that is supposed to link you to your iPhoto Library does not work.  It is dimmed.
And choosing my iPhoto Library instead, in hopes of being able to access my photos with faces, does not get around this problem.
    Anyone know of a fix?
    Thanks.

I placed this question up here almost two years ago, and the problem has since resolved itself.  I think because I have upgraded my mac's operating system (OS) several times since then.
You might want to check and see if you're using the latest version of Mac OS X (currently 10.8.4).  If you're not up-to-date, go into the App Store on your Mac and see if there is an OS update waiting for you.  That might help.
    Good luck.

  • 'Create New Contact' not working in Phone app

I want to Create New Contact after a call from a new number (selecting the "circled i" button next to the "unknown" phone number in the Recents tab) but while I was entering data in the Contact app, I was interrupted, the iPhone went to sleep and my extensive Contact entry was lost because no data is saved until the Done button is manually selected which closes the record.
When I go back to the Phone app and select the "circled i" button next to the "unknown" phone number in the Recents tab, both the "Create New Contact" and the "Add to Existing Contact" buttons to take me to the Contact app do not work...i.e. nothing happens when I press them, even after putting the iPhone to sleep. After several tries, I let it sleep for 10 minutes and now these buttons linking to the Contact app from the Phone app again work as usual.
So we have two unacceptable defects in the iPhone basic Apple apps here:
1- interruptions while entering a new Contact app record causes the new record to be lost because it isn't automatically saved when the iPhone goes to sleep or an incoming call, etc, but only when the user manually selects the Done button in the Contact app record, which closes the record and one must then select the Edit button to resume data entry (repeat often to simply save as you enter in case there is an unexpected interruption...how dumb is that?. This is just poor iOS implementation that doesn't consider common usage situations that cause data loss, and it could be data that isn't easily retrieved. If Apple doesn't know how to implement auto save at frequent intervals, or upon certain events like sleep or incoming call, then they should at least put a Save button next to the Done button so we can manually save without the stupid Done and Edit button pushing, repeat, repeat, repeat.
2- A bug in the Phone app that causes the link buttons to the Contact app to stop functioning in at least the situation I describe above. This is unacceptable in a mature iOS basic usage app.

  • Search in contacts not working

the searchh bar in the address book does not work?... I'm not loving the new layout either

Not that you provided a lot of info to work with, but...
Note that the search will work only within the Group that you are currently in. To search the entire address book you have to select the All Contacts group.

  • Merge duplicate contacts

    Hi there
I synced my new iphone with my outlook contacts and have also imported contacts from my SIM card. In some cases I now have duplicate contacts; one containing the email address for a contact (from outlook) and a second contact (for the same person) containing their phone number (from the SIM card). Is there a way of merging the information so that phone and email info for the same person is merged? Or do I have to go through and do it manually?
    Thanks
    Mary

Did you import the contacts from the SIM card after syncing your iPhone with Outlook?
If so, there lies your problem.
If you have synced your iPhone with Outlook again after importing the contacts from the SIM card and the contacts are duplicated in Outlook, Outlook should include a merge option for selected contact info - the Address Book on a Mac does. After merging the contacts with Outlook, follow this by a sync or to ensure the corrected contacts in Outlook are transferred to your iPhone, under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes below the Advanced section, select Contacts for replace info on this iPhone. Select Apply followed by a sync.

  • Calling through Contacts not working on iPhone 4s

I am a brand new Verizon customer, although I have had an iPhone 2G and an iPhone 4 with ATT.
The good news is that I can finally get cell phone service in my Manhattan apartment.  The bad news (apart from the fact that I am being forced to pay for way too many more minutes than I could possibly want) is that the new phone is giving me lots of trouble making call through the contacts app.
When I try to call someone using the contacts app, I get a message saying that I am not signed up for long distance or international calling.  This happens with regular old domestic phone numbers.  If I manually type in the number to call, it works fine.  I never had this problem with my ATT iPhones.  What gives?
Any help will be much appreciated.

    Hello balkan,
If you have not resolved the opportunity you were having with the contacts not listed in your sms conversations I have a suggestion.  From your device navigate to Settings>Phone>International Assist and if it is on please turn it off.  Once you make sure that feature is off return to the home screen and double tap the home button to clear the application manager then power cycle the device. Test a message and if unsuccessful dial *228 send and choose option 1 and let the phone re-program again.  When that is complete the device should populate the contact name.  You can also find assistance here  Please let me know your results.  Thank you.

  • Phonebook/contacts not working since update

My phonebook/contacts has stopped working, so I can't call or find numbers. All this since the update, everything else seems fine at the moment.

    Hi,
I'm a bit confused, how do you mean that it does not work? What happens when you enter the phonebook, do you receive any error message?
Where is the contacts stored? Do you sync via Gmail or an Exchange account or is it local contacts? After the repair, did you restore any backup were your contacts was stored?
