Merge external + internal drive

Hi,
All my iTunes files are on an external drive. Since installing iTunes 9, the default location has been reset to my local (empty) Music folder without me noticing. Since then, all files I added or downloaded (about 20Gb) are placed on my internal drive in a new iTunes Media folder.
iTunes itself seems to have no difficulty in using both locations.
But I want to move these new files to my external drive again. I can add them again to iTunes, but then I'll probably wind up with doubles, no? I want to merge the files of my 2 iTunes Media folders and tell iTunes it's all in one location again.
Any suggestions?

+Okay - so the key is not to drag the other library onto the hard disk but just to add the library so that iTunes is "aware" of the library on the external. Then I can "consolidate."+
no. you don't add the library, you add the media files.
you can either drag the folder with the media (songs, movies, tv shows) from the external into the iTunes window on your new Mac, or you use the +add file+ from the +file menu+ in iTunes
actually, in your situation you don't need to consolidate at all. given enough HD space on your new Mac, adding the media from the external HD will do the job.
as for consolidating: lets assume you have 2 external 500 GB drives. one holds all your movies, the other all your songs. your iTunes is aware that movies are located on drive (a) and songs on drive (b).
lets say you are sick of having 2 drives and go buy a new 2 TB drive. here's when you point iTunes to the new 2 TB drive and ask it to consolidate the media from the 2 500 GB drives to the new 2 TB drive.

  • HP Stream 8 tablet cant see external & internal drives at same time

I have an HP Stream 8 tablet. I have plugged an OTG 64gb flash memory card Sandisk Dual USB drive into the tablet charging slot. The Tablet recognises all of the 64gb of storage & can read & write to the drive with no problems.
However, when an external storage  drive is plugged in, the device cannot see the 32gb sandisc micro usb , which I installed . The tablet only seems to be able to see 1 removable drive at one time, which is frustrating as I cant then copy items from the micro sd to an external drive.
Is there a way to make windows/hp stream tablet see all drives at the same time. I have insufficient space on the built in 32gb drive , after win 8.1, office 365 & other programmes are installed so I can't  copy items onto that drive.
When the external flash is connected, I can only see the C: Drive & the plugged in flash drive. When the external flash drive is disconnected, I can then see the c: Drive & the microsd32gb card.
One of the problems I think is that the tablet doesnt seem to always assign drive letters to extra storage drives. How do I activate this?

It's something to do with the OTG 64gb flash memory card Sandisk Dual USB drive.  Mine sees an internal 64GB uSD & a flash drive connected with an OTG cable.  Drive letter asssignment is a Windows thing.  You can customize it with USBDLM.

  • Storage location external & internal drive

    Hello,
I need to place my iTunes Lib on a external drive as size is too big for flash of new MBP.
Is it possible that some selected Musik (e.g. playlist) that is also stored automaticly on internal drive of MBP?
So on tour, least this is still available from iTunes... Sure I can manually export seem files, but I wanted to keep the luxury of using iTunes...
Same topic for iPhoto is there also an option.
Or how do you handle it?

    Hello Jim,
    also thanks for quick reply.
So only approach today is two have two libs, and moving files between libs, I thing there are some 3rd party tools available to simplify.
Best would be if e.g. a selected playlist is automaticly stored on main drive as duplicate (all rest on itunes folder e.g. ext. drive), but seems more as a feature request to R&D Apple
Aperture or Lightroom has that in similar way...

  • External/Internal Drives

    Hello,
I am going to be buying a Mac Tower soon and need to clearly understand something about internal and external drives.
I have been using a and Intel Mac book Pro. From what I understood it is better to have your Video and Audio on an external drive with the 800 firewire chord.
Now...is this true when you can have multiple separate drives on the tower? Having nothing to do with cost, would it be better to have multiple drives- 2 chord video/audio and one for the operating system and program- right in the computer?
Or is it still better to have the media on external drives connected with firewire (800 or 400)?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Good post, Andy. I would add that Disk Utility can only create RAID 0 and RAID 1 stripe sets. RAID 1 is also called mirroring, where data is written to both drives at the same time, so one drive contains a complete backup of the other one. But that's not what you want, I suspect.
If you are working in DV, you do not need to stripe your media drives. A Seagate ST3500630NS in a MacPro will give you around 70 MB/sec throughput when empty. That's a great number, and it means you will get many streams of DV video in real-time.
I have three of those drives in my MacPro, in addition to a 500GB boot drive. Two of the Seagates are striped together, the third one is a single unstriped drive.

  • Merging and storing files and folders on external hard drive

Merging and storing files/folders  - I have a MacBookPro3,1 &  a MacBookAir1,1 both running OS10.6.8 and then files from backups and archives on a LaCie 250 and LaCie 500. I want to improve my productivity by merging all files/folder into one place.
I have a WesternDigital 1T to move files/folders to and do my duplicate deletion work.
The end result I'm seeking is to have all my files/folders stored on the LaCie 500  - with space for expanding iPhoto Library and Movies then that LaCie 500 Backed up on the 1T.   As my computers are older models the internal drives are smaller - MBA 80GB and MBP160. The Air in particular gets full up quickly and doesn't work efficiently.
What steps/software have you had experience with, and would recommend to merge all my files/folders, delete duplicates, and get it all in one place - including iTunes, iPhoto.
What are the pros and cons of keeping & working with files/folders on an external drive rather than on the internal drive?
I'm aware of sluggishness in iPhoto if the library is too large, and looked into iPhoto Library Manager as an option for my photos.
Thanks in advance for your help with this way past due Spring cleaning activity.

Plugins have to be in specific locations for the application to load them. If you're just storing plugins you're not using you can store them anywhere.

  • Unable to copy iphoto library from external drive to internal drive

    iPhoto '09 8.1.2 (424)
I have a very large iPhoto library (282GB, 34k photos) spread between multiple computers, which as been consolidated on a single external drive now (1 TB Western Digital Mac OS Extended (Case-senstive, Journaled). I'm trying to get the big library on the external drive back on my Mac Pro so I can break the merged libraries into smaller libraries in a safe fashion.
There is nothing on the internal drive, but I keep getting an error about 62GB into the copying that reads: "You cannot copy "[Library Name]" to the destination because its name is the same as the name of an item on the destination, except for the case of some characters." ... But there's nothing on the internal drive!!!
I've renamed the library on the external drive, then tried copying it -- no dice. I've created a new folder on the internal drive and tried copying it to the new folder -- same error at exactly the same spot in the transfer. I've even reformatted then zeroed out the internal drive -- same error, same spot. Anyone know a solution or have ideas about what I'm doing wrong?
    Many thanks!

I think the error report is bogus and the issue is not on the receiving volume but a locked or damaged file within the library.
Try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair Library permissions.
FWIW, I don't see what you gain by a: splitting the library at all and b: copying it back to the MacPro to do it.

  • I had tried installing windows 8.1 pro with many different solutions like using Bootcamp or using gdisk part and upgrading the disk part from hybrid to EFI also tried Using Lenevo external Optical drive which doesnt worked my internal drive is damage

I Am fed up after getting error after errors on the installation of windows 8.1 in my late 2011 MBP 15" 750 GB HDD and OSX Yosemite 10.10.2 and i am trying to install windows 8 or 7 and the error doent go away also i tried various other methods like gdisk part to make next button appear and Afte next button appear i am getting the error after the check list is done
please someone help me out i am getting paranoid in this and i am going to be a threat to society because its making me insane.

    1. You cannot use the Lenovo external drive, because you already have a built-in SuperDrive. Get your internal drive fixed.
    2. Your Mac does not support EFI Boot, because it is a PreUEFI model based on How to identify MacBook Pro models - Apple Support and the following list. If you force it with EFI boot, some of your hardware GPU/Audio will not work properly.

  • Backing up images on external hard drive and restoring to new internal driv

I recently purchased a new external hard drive and a new internal hard drive. Before installing the new internal drive, I backed up the old internal drive on the external drive. Then I installed the new internal drive to my Macbook Pro. However, when I tried to access and print my Aperture images on the new internal drive, I received an error message saying "versions with unavailable master images cannot be printed." I clicked on 'show referenced files," but couldn't determine how to recover my master images. I checked the forum and under "referenced files go offline after restore from a backup" it said to go to "File>manage referenced files" but nothing else. How can I recover my master images? Please help - I have nearly 6000 images that are lost without recovering the master images. And no, I was ultra stupid in not placing everything in a vault = but I'm relatively new to Mac OS and thought a backup would be sufficient. Thank!

The volume name of the new hard drive needs to be the same as the old hard drive - rename it if you have to - then they should be fine.
If you cannot seem to make this work then you will have to reconnect them with locate referenced files under the file menu. Select all the files that are disconnected before going into the dialog.

I have a new MAcBook Air and my photos don't fit on the internal hard drive.  I want to store my photos on an external hard drive which I will connect to my Air when using Iphoto.  How do I set an external hard drive as the default drive in Iphoto?

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on external drive.  I'd like to migrate only the internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive then just plug in iPhoto library drive.  Is this going be a problem?

I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on an external drive.  Both drives are backed up on Time Machine.  I'd like to migrate only the old internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive and then just plug in iPhoto library drive to the new iMac.  This would save having to transfer several hundred GBs of data.  Will this work using Set Up Assistant?

Your user account on the new Mac must have a different UID than on the old one.  See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
You'll need to change the permissions on the iPhoto library on the external HD.  Do a Get Info on it, click the padlock at the bottom of the Sharing & Permissions section of the Info window and enter your Admin password.
Then click the plus sign, select the user account you want on the next screen, and click Select.   Then change Read only to Read & Write for that user via the little arrows.  Finally, click the "gear" icon and select Apply to enclosed items.  That may take a few mintutes on a large library.

  • How to take Auto backup from External Network Drive to Mac pro internal Dri

    Hi,
I have a External Network Drive (Buffalo 1TB) which i use as a server, now i need to take auto backup from that external drive to the Mac i am working on, which has 2TB Internal hard Disk.
Please could anyone help me on this.....
    Thanks in advance

If you are looking to actually integrate what you have on the external one terabyte hard drive with the 2 TB hard drive you're using inside the Mac the best move for you if you want access to that data when using the Mac Pro server is going into utilities click on the top bar where it says go fall that down to the utilities told them that folder quickly once you are there you will see migration assistant click on that you will be asked to type your admin password to that. It will ask you "how do you want to transfer your information" then select from a Time machine backup or other disk when it asks you will be transferring information to your Mac Pro from your 1 Tb backup external hard drive once it's finished eject the drive or reformat it and use it again if your objective was to infect keep compress the data on the external so you have more space but do not have access to it I strongly recommend Carbon Copy Clone 3.3.1 is 100% free and does a fantastic job here is the link http://www.pure-mac.com/downloads/carboncopyclonerdl.html of copying every block to create an exact replica of your source hard drive. If you want something different and don't mind paying SuperDuper! is a great product as well this WebSite will have many options I would stick to carbon copy clone http://www.pure-mac.com/backup.html I also like EMC Retrospect backup and recovery software for the Mac it is a great product but very much on the expensive side for backup utilities although if you need word offers this might be right up your alley.
    I hope I wasn't help,
    Sincerely,
    Thomas

  • Can I use an internal drive or external only?

It seems you need a very large (1TB) drive dedicated to Time Machine.
As internal storage is always cheaper, would an internal non-boot drive in the additional PCI slot work for Time Machine, specifically will it see an internal drive or only external firewire drives?
And as I've read in other posts it's not recommended to partition the drive?
    Any other formatting suggestions?
    Thanks!

You have four drive bays in the computer. For best speed for backup you should install the backup drive in one of your four bays if possible. If that isn't possible then you have the option to use an external FireWire drive. You also have two additional internal SATA connectors. However, you only have one extra bay, the one for the second optical drive. You can install a drive in the spare optical drive bay and connect it to the same ribbon as the optical drive unless you have one of the models that uses all SATA drives, even the optical drive.
The general requirements for a TM drive are that it be partitioned using GUID and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled. A TM drive should be at least twice the capacity of the drive or drives it will back up. Over time a TM backup drive will fill up at which time it is either replaced or erased.

  • When I try to import, I receive the following message: "An internal error has occurred: not enough memory".  I always download my photos onto an external hard drive.

Yesterday,I downloaded an update for Lightroom 5.  Now when I try to import, I receive the following message: "An internal error has occurred: not enough memory".  The message comes up right after I click import, before I choose a file to upload. Here is the information I can think of that might be needed to answer this question:
    - I always download my photos onto an external hard drive. It is about 10 % full.
    - It says I have Lightroom 5.6  64 bit
    - I am working from a newer laptop (Windows).  The internal drive on the laptop has 289 gb and I am using 61 gb total memory.
    - I have edited 2794 photos in Lightroom and it is all in one catalog.
    - I did not have this problem until I made the update.  I did have my first "bug" earlier this week when one of my photos had a line show up through the middle of it when I exported it. I was able to export it a second time without the line.
If there is more info. needed, let me know.  I do photography as a hobby and know enough about Lightroom to edit out blemishes and adjust color balance, but not too much more, so forgive my ignorance if this is an obvious fix.
    Sincerely,
    Adrianne

Not Enough Memory typically refers to RAM.  How much RAM do you have on your 64-bit OS computer?  Do you have other programs running that may be using most of the memory?

  • ITunes 11 won't import .mov video files from external hard drive but will from internal.

    Hi Everyone
I'm having a problem with iTunes 11.0.1. I can't import .mov video files stored on an external hard drive. I can however import .m4v files from the same external drive. Using either the add to library option or dragging files from the finder.
I can add .mov files from the internal though. Strange I know.
The reason behind this posting is that I'm using iFlicks to convert my TV and movies from my external drive for Apple TV and add all relevent meta data, keeping the files on the external drive and having iTunes link to them.
I would like to be able to simply create a general iTune compatiable file using iFlicks which only takes a minute or two per file to convert. I'm currently converting them to .m4v just for the sack of being able to import them into iTunes from an external drive takes 45 minutes per file.
Has anybody else had this problem? Any ideas on a fix to allow me to import .mov files from an external drive into iTunes without copying it to the iTune library file.
    Many Thanks
    Dave

This might be worth a shot - basically seeing if Vista permissions could be the culprit.
Give yourself FULL control and ownership of the exHD, let's call it M:
How to Take Ownership and Grant Permissions in Windows Vista
Take control of the top level folder and ALL subfolders.
Try creating a new blank ITL file on M: by pressing *and holding* the shift key while itunes starts. See if you can add everything again.
