Merge Free Space into Primary Partition

Hello, all, is it possible to merge free space into the primary partition? I made a partition but deleted it and i'm left with free space and i cannot delete it. I'm using disk utility and i wouldn't want to erase the whole drive and start over just to erase the free space

There is an option.
I don't know if it's the best but it works for me.
Boot from a recovery disk/usb and open Disk Utility then:
1. Create a partition from the free space
2. Select the drive
3. Go to Restore tab
4. On the source drag the partition with your OS
5. On the Destination drag the partition you created
6. Click Restore
7. Go back to Partition tab and erase the OS partition (not the partition you created)
8. Resize the partition you create
Done.
I know this is an old topic but maybe someone is stuck with this problem and can't find an answer!

  • How to merge two seperate free space into single partition/volume???

    Hey guys :)
Please help me on merging two unallocated free spaces in my internal harddisk. I already tried searching for options in diskmanagement but nothing found to do that. The harddisk has two free spaces(1gb and 50.78gb) now, I want to merge them into single one
and finally as a single parition/volume. Is there any other method or should use any other third party tool?
I really wanted to attach a screenshot but sadly microsoft couldn't allow me.

You need a third party tool like Easeus Partition Manager
    Wanikiya and Dyami--Team Zigzag
Sure I'll try that. Thank you very much :)
But it is really sad to say that it is real drawback of windows as it doesn't have its own choice in diskmanagement utility.

  • Merge free space back into partition

I was partitioning my external hard drive for time machine and I ended up with extra free space. How do I merge that back into one of the partitions?
See that extra block of 128 GB? How can I add that into the External Storage?

Manipulating the partition table always risks the data on the drive, but you can try the following to expand the partition size:
    1. open the Terminal and enter "diskutil list" to get a list of the drive devices and volumes on them, along with their identifiers.
    2. Run the following command using the identifier for the External Storage partition (replace "IDENTIFIER" with the identifier string, which will be something like "disk3s2"):
    diskutil resizeVolume IDENTIFIER R

  • How do I merge "free space" back into my OS X partition

Here is what I am currently looking at:
There is about 20 gb of free space that I was going to use for an Ubuntu install but have since changed my mind. To be safe I downloaded the Recovery Disk Assistant and installed it onto a flash drive. When I boot from that and enter disk utility I can drag my OS X partition into the free space and it appears to fill the drive. When I hit apply, it does it's thing and completes the partition but then instantly reverts to what it started out as with the free space still there. I tried a restart but found my drive to be in the same state. I have several back ups so I am not really worried about it, but I assumed this would work. Am I doing something wrong or do I need to just restore from the backup? Can I do that without affecting the bootcamp partition? I am on a Macbook Pro Retina running 10.8.4.

You will need to add a new partition in that empty space. Be sure you format it Mac OS Extended, Journaled. If that works, then remove the partition and try extending the OS X partition. Note that this will render your Boot Camp partition non-bootable.
Another possibility is that you should not extend the OS X volume all the way to the top of the Boot Camp partition. Leave about 2 GBs free. See if that works by providing enough space for the Recovery HD to be relocated.
Did you ever attempt to install Linux or to format that partition for Linux?

  • On Windows I can see the free space of my partitions, but I can't see on the OS X

I don't remember why, I had a 10 gb partition, so I deleted it for add in another partition, but it disappeared from my Disk Utility. So I entered on my Windows through bootcamp and on the Disk Management I can see the 10 gb partition as Unallocated. The last time I resized the partitions through Windows, I lost the Mac partition, and now I can't use the bootcamp assistant to delete Windows.
How can I delete it and take the both partition on the mac partition again ?

Hi thanks, sorry take too long to answers, that didn't work, I found another place that says to delete the partition, but now my HD is like this
The Recovery HD is strange, and I don't have my 50 gbs of free space that I suppose to have
This app called iPartition shows the free space
What I am supposed to do ?

  • Want to convert free space to 3rd partition on MBR-partitioned drive

I'm running Leopard 10.5.8 on my Dual G4 MDD. I have an external USB 1.4 TB hard drive that is partitioned with two 512-GB FAT32 volumes and has, therefore, over 300 GB of space available at the end. I'm trying to create a third partition using fdisk, since it doesn't seem to be possible with *Disk Utility* or with any other GUI tool I've looked at. Here's how the drive shows up as it is now:
    fdisk: 1> print
    Disk: /dev/rdisk3 geometry: -5415437/4/63 [-1364690128 sectors]
    Offset: 0 Signature: 0xAA55
    Starting Ending
#: id cyl hd sec - cyl hd sec [ start - size]
    1: 0B 1023 254 63 - 1023 254 63 [ 33816636 - 1073741824] Win95 FAT-32
    2: 0B 0 0 0 - 0 0 0 [1107623996 - 1073741824] Win95 FAT-32
    3: 00 0 0 0 - 0 0 0 [ 0 - 0] unused
    4: 00 0 0 0 - 0 0 0 [ 0 - 0] unused
I figured out that, allowing for the same gap (65536) between partitions 2 and 3 as exists between 1 and 2, the starting address for the third partition should be 2181431356. But here's what I get when I try to edit the third entry in the partition table, first using that calculated value and then using the default (by pressing Return):
    fdisk: 1> edit 3
    Starting Ending
#: id cyl hd sec - cyl hd sec [ start - size]
    3: 00 0 0 0 - 0 0 0 [ 0 - 0] unused
    Partition id ('0' to disable) [0 - FF]: [0] (? for help) 0b
Do you wish to edit in CHS mode? [n] n
    Partition offset [0 - -1364690128]: [-2113601476] 2181431356
    '2147483647' is out of range.
    Partition offset [0 - -1364690128]: [-2113601476]
    '-2113601476' is out of range.
Moreover, I get an 'out of range' response for any value I enter, including 0. The negative numbers lead me to believe that this version of fdisk can't properly deal with numbers above a certain size. Is this the problem?
Also, I actually dumped the existing MBR as text using 'fdisk -d' and edited it. I was thinking I could use 'fdisk -r' to load the edited table, but it seems dangerous if I make a mistake, or if the same bug referred to above also comes into play here. Two things, among others, that I would need to know:
    1) Does 'fdisk -r' immediately alter the MBR on the disk, or does it only affect the copy in memory unless and until that copy is written to disk?
    2) Would any of the fdisk commands that I've mentioned alter the two existing partitions in any way -- something I definitely don't want to do!
Any answers or suggestions would be much appreciated.
P.S. Is it possible to format text copied from Terminal, as I used above, with a fixed-width font here?

The simplest way is to place the code or whatever in code tags. Notice the beginning and end tag is the same.
    place your code here.

  • Disk Management Claims there is "Free Space" on Disk 0. Possible to merge it into main drive?

    Hello.
Thanks for having the time to read my post.
Recently, I was trying to Dualboot Windows 7 with another OS just to test something out(The Operating system was horrible.)
But anyway, when it was installing that OS, it took over 160 Gb memory out of my main drive and into a seprate drive for that os.
So when I went in Disk Management, I saw a hidden drive saying 160 Gb. I deleted it and now it's says under Disk 0 "159.83 Gb Free Space" in a green box.
I don't know how to merge that memory into my main C drive again.
    Thanks.
    son588

    Hi Son588,
Why is it free space instead of unallocated space? I guess the drive you have deleted is a logical drive in extended partition. You can try to right-click the free space to deleted it again. If there is no partitions, locating between C drive and unallocated
space, you can merge the unallocated space in to C drive with the feature of "Extend Volume" built-in Disk Management. If not, there are two solutions to solve your problem:
Solution1: Backup partitions which locate between C drive and unallcated space, and then delete these partitions. Then merge unallcoated space into C drive with “Extend Volume”.
Solution2: Extend partition with free partition manager software.

  • 50GB of Free Space Partition

Macintosh HD Split into 2 separate partitions:
    Macintosh HD
    Free Space
Can't join the two together nor can I change Free Space into anything else (Mac OS Extended, etc.)
    I have a MacBook Pro - 500GB (OS X 10.9.3)

Tried that. I can't move them or do anything with the Free Space partition.

  • "Erase Free Space"- DU Not Responding?!

Started "Erase Free Space" in disk utility about 36 hours ago.  I had nearly 1TB of free space which I knew was more than the usual amount someone has when they perform this task but I was attempting to speed up game playing as after a year or so, excess of deleted saved games and game data has gradually slowed game performance down some.  I read that this might help so I ran it...
It took 24 hours to do the initial run through up until the "creating temporary secondary file" notification.  It looked as though it was about to complete and I received the usual error message that apple says to ignore about no remaining free space or something to that effect.  However, out of nowhere the spin wheel started, the Disk Utility window went grey and everything seemed to have frozen.
After reading several peoples experiences with things like this I was confident that it would resolve in a few minutes, maybe half an hour even and then most likely resolve itself.  It was late so I went to bed and when I got up it was still in the same place as I left it...greyed out and spin wheeled.
So then I went to the Activity Monitor to check the Disk Usage as I knew that I could view the progress through that.  As far as I'm aware, after creating the temporary file, as it already did, it is supposed to start looking like free space is "disappearing" as it puts the recently overwritten free space into its newly created temp file and then eventually deletes the file.
Problem is, the Activity Monitor shows the Disk Utility as "Not Responding" along with Safari and Mail having the same message, yet at the same time I see the free space on my HD SLOWLY (20-100kb/s) doing that "dissapearing" act.  So is the Disk Utility doing its job?  Is it hung up some how?  If it is working then why is it moving at such an incredibly slow rate?  Should I be concerned or take some sort of action or just wait while this resolves itself in who knows how long from now?
Advice on this would be very much appreciated as I am not a very experienced Mac user.

There aren't that many files to lose in the long run. It's more a matter of avoiding the risk out of convinience for not losing the few that I have. So correct, I have no back up since there isn't much to back up, hence the nearly 1TB of overwritting free space in the first place. Unfortunately, I realized just how long this process takes after I began it, and now it seems to late...
If I did restart, what would likely happen?
    Possibilities I've come across:
1.won't be able to log in because theres no more free space
2.I'd have to search for the temp file and manually delete it (provided I had some extra space to do it)
3.might lose all data and have to reinstall everything
Could be any or all 3
Is there a safe way to either:
1.Restart with little to no complications listed above
2.Safely end this task without some sort of unfixable complication occuring
3.Boost its processing so that I can resonably wait it out
There may not be, but I might as well check around before I go straight to Restart is what I was thinking.
No, no and no unfortunately, patience or a leap of faith are the choices

  • IPad free space fragmentation

I'm wondering how to defragment the free space on the iPad's solid state (i.e. NAND flash) drive?
The reason I ask, is that I've found that the more I use my iPad 2, the slower it gets (even after a restart).  When my Ipad 2 had 1.5 GB of "disk" space free (out of 64 GB), I was getting lousy (1 MB/sec) performance for "disk" writes, tested using the free PerformanceTest benchmark app.  This is because of the way flash writes work (the whole block needs to be read and then written).  The lousy write speeds was cauing performance issues in some apps that did a lot of writing to "disk".  It also made syncing to my PC really slow.
I deleted a bunch of iTunes videos, which freed up about 11 GB of space.  My write speeds then shot up to 30 MB/sec, since all that space that was used for the videos was free (and contiguous).  At that point all my performance issues went away and syncing was very fast.  As I started using the iPad though (and doing disk writes), the write speeds started to slow down again.  Today I was down to 6 GB free and disk writes were around 6 MB/sec.  I deleted another video and now it's at 8 GB free, with writes at about 15 MB/sec.  That's still only about half the max write speed.
This seems like a design issue with the iPad since solid state drives are supposed to "garbage collect" in the background, moving free space into contiguous chunks for performance reasons.  iOS doesn't appear to be doing that at all.    There are programs that can do that for PCs and some OS do it automatically, but not for iOS.
Is there any way to consolidate the free space on an iPad, other than doing a complete restore?

You may want to take a peek the next time you replay to a thread. The new search feature brings up threads regardless of how old they are. This one is over two years old and it's a pretty sure bet that the OP has long since resolved their issue or moved onto a new device.

  • Getting folder free space in a Windows 2003 server with folder cuotas

    Dear Friends:
First I have to request apologizes about my bad English.
I was wondering if the following could be done: stablish a folder cuota un Windows 2003 Server R2, and retrieve the folder free space with Java.
With the file.getUsableSpace, I can obtain the free space of the entire partition, but I'm only interested in a specific folder.
    Is that possible?
    Thanks in advance.
    R. Camps.

    Dear Andrew:
Thank you for your suggestion, but I know more or less how to configure the quotas over Windows folders. That is not a problem.
I will try to explain my problem in other words. Imagine a folder called "c:\myfolder", with a quota of 2Gb, in a hard disk with 250Gb of total space.
    When I do:
    File f=new File ("c:\myfolder");
long s=f.getUsableSpace();the method getUsableSpace returns 250Gb, not 2Gb. For me, it would be wonderful to obtain the free space of the quota value, not the free space of the partition.
Thank you very mucch for your attention.
    R. Campos.

  • Merging the main partition with free space: is this possible?

    Hey all!
My hard drive currently contains two partitions: 200 GB for the Tiger and 30 GB of free space I left when I wasn't yet sure if I will not want to install Linux on it. Now I am sure I won't and I'd like to merge these 30 GB back onto the first partition. Is this possible?
    $ diskutil resizeVolume disk0s2 limits
Shows 200 GB is max size for the first partition. Guess then that this won't work:
    $ diskutil resizeVolume disk0s2 230G
Any suggestions would be very appreciated!
    Artemiy.

Although there are utilities available to repartition a hard drive without erasing all data on the drive, I wouldn't trust them and since you need to create or update your backup beforehand anyway to be on the safe side, do so and then reformat the hard drive with the Tiger install package that shipped with your Mac to a single partition. This will erase the hard drive completely first and then re-install OS X and all included software along with any 3rd party software and then re-store your data from the backup.
Or with a backup utility that provides for it, create a bootable clone backup of your 200GB partition saved to an external drive. Reformat the hard drive and then restore everything completely from the bootable clone backup.
When reformatting, be sure to select HFS+ (or extended) with Journaling enabled.

  • How to merge my disk partition with the free space

Hello! I have a macbook pro mid 2010 with Mavericks, I had 2 partitions and deleted one with the disk utility.
Now I want to expand the one that I have left but I can't, I cannot drag the corner of the partition because it is below of the free space.
I will post a picture so you can understand better.  Also I tried using iPartitions but it won't let me make any changes. Thank you
I don't know if anyone can see the picture so i'm leaving a url:  https://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/505x387q90/745/WaiZID.png

You need to create a partition in the free space, clone the content of Macintosh HD 2 to it, restart from the newly-created partition, and delete the one currently listed as Macintosh HD 2.

  • How to delete "Free Space" Partition?

I partitioned my MacBook Pro into 2 volumes so I could dual boot Mavericks and Yosemite Developer Preview. After testing Yosemite, I found out that it was stable enough to run on my main partition. I installed it on my main partition replacing Mavericks and deleted the second partition which included Yosemite. While deleting, somehow I was left with an empty partition called "Free Space" which I cannot delete.
I am pretty sure the problem isn't related to Yosemite being a developer preview as it could've happened under an previous stable OS. How can I merge my "Free Space" partition with Macintosh HD?
MacBook Pro with Retina display 13-inch Late 2013
    2.8GHz Intel Core i7
    16GB RAM
    Intel Iris graphics

OS X Yosemite Developer Preview 2

If you select the top partition, does ////// lines appear in the bottom right hand corner? If so try selecting them and dragging downward. Boot into the Recovery Volume (command - R) during a restart and try it there.
