Merge to HDR, Remove Ghosts looks awful
I'm geting really ugly "Merge to HDR" results in Photoshop CS6 that were not present in CS5.5. It only happens when using the "Remove Ghosts" checkbox
I use a Panasonic Lumix G2
Photoshop CS6
Lightrom 4
Camera Raw 7
I'm trying to merge RAW images to HDR. I use Adobe Lightroom 4.
1) I right click on multiple RAW exposure images
2) Edit In > Merge to HDR Pro in Photoshop
3) After aligning and merging, I use the "remove ghosts"option, but it creates really ugly blown-out areas on my preview image. The result is just as bad after clicking "OK" and the "creating file" box is done. I can see another thread discussing this in the Photoshop CS6 Beta (read only) area. The guy was using a Panasonic Lumix GH2,(mine's a G2) so maybe it's an isue with RAW support for Panasonic's Raw format. http://forums.adobe.com/message/4290247
Im having this exact issue also.
Please see my comments in this thread about how I've found Merge to HDR nothing useful:

CS6 Problem - Merge to HDR Pro - "Remove ghosts" Process 2012 ACR7
Hello! I found a problem when creating images HDR of RAW
When using the "Remove ghosts" - the problem is distortion image, clipping highlight and shadows.
File>Automate>Merge to HDR Pro>Sourse files>Browse>OK>Merge to HDR Pro>Mode: 32-16-8 Bit>Remove ghosts - Problem!!!
This is a problem only in the 2012 process ACR7, the process 2010 ACR7 there are no problems.
My system - Win 7 SP1, x64 version CS6.
Sample images:
1. No "Remove ghosts"

First of all, here is the dark exposure processed entirely in Lightroom. As you can see there is good shadow detail and no blown highlights:
I
Now here is the image using the darkest and lightest (of 3 exposures) manually blended. Here the shadow detail is naturally better (although it isn't obvious on the small image shown here):
Now here is the image from HDR Pro with remove ghosts on the darkest of the 3 images. As you can see there is very bad (practically no) shadow detail (look at the hillside on the left):
Here is the HDR Pro with remove ghosts on the middle of the 3 images. As you can see the clouds are badly blown/posterised:
And here is the HDR Pro with remove ghosts on the most over-exposed image. As you can see the sky is completely messed up:
Essentially unusable for this sort of image. Hope this gets fixed soon!! -
How do you access "Remove Ghosts" in Merge to HDR Pro (CS5)
I select two images in Bridge and launch "Merge
to HDR Pro". In the dialog window, the "Remove Ghosts" check
box is there, but ghosted. How do I access it?Remove Ghosts only works when you use 3 or more images in Merge to HDR

32 bit HDR - black pixel speckling when Remove Ghosts checked
Hi,
I'm using LR4.4, PS CS5 12.0.4, OS X 10.6.8. I'm able to view the 32 bit TIF back in LR, but when I zoom in to 2:1, I can see obvious speckling of mostly black pixels in various dark parts of the image. This only happens when I have Remove Ghosts checked. I actually had just thought of doing a test without it checked to confirm my suspicion, and I was right. Unfortunately I need it checked for some of the images with motion.

Thanks,

Here's a very noticeable example. Others are less apparent.

And I'm getting these dialogs, which I don't think have any relevance.I am having a similar problem with Merge to HDR from Lightroom 4 to CS6.

In my version of Photoshop (CS5) when I merge three RAW photos to HDR Pro I am not given the command "remove ghosts". What am I doing wrong?
RickI'm not at my home computer right now, but unless I'm mistaken, the option to remove ghosts is a
t the top edge of the HDR dialog. It's a tick mark. If selected, you can indicate the individual photo that is used for the ghosted areas.
Regards, Antero -
I posted here before, but was directed to go through the help menu in Photoshop, which brought me back here!! Please Help Me!
Merge to HDR pro is producing very "bleached" and overexposed images.
Thank you,
RobThank you for the reply, Ed. I've delved into the PS preferences as best I could but did not see anything related to this issue. I have ACR set to convert at 240 dpi with ProPhoto color space and have never encountered this problem under typical 16 bit conversions from RAW to psd. For some reason PS sets the document size of 32 bit images to 3.5' x 5' @ 72 dpi which results in an extra step to the already time consuming workflow when creating such images in PS.
Perhaps this is an issue Adobe can address in a future update? They did a good job addressing other issues such as the disappearing RGB data in the info pallette when adjusting images with curves. It appears that the Windows version of PS has too many non-fatal (but annoying) flaws that aren't present in the Mac version. -
CS6 - Merge to HDR Pro fails to complete
I'm running Win 7, 32-bit and just picked up LR 4.1 and CS6. I've updated everything to the latest versions. I'm shooting with a Nikon D800.
I'm trying to merge 7 pictures using Merge to HDR Pro. I've tried this using raw files (NEF) and converted JPG files. I select the 7 files, PS comes up with the first picture showing. It starts to process the second picture and the filename changes to something like Untitled_HDR1. After a few seconds, that picture goes away and nothing else happens.
Have I got my settings screwed up?

Although you are on Win7 32-bit, this may apply to your issue.
There are some 32-bit XP-specific issues we're addressing before shipping that are related to memory.
I'm pretty sure that's the issue you're running into. I'm sorry for the trouble it's causing you.
Here are some suggestions to work around the issue. In the meantime, we'll work on helping XP-32 & Photoshop play nicely.
Try a different memory setting (65%-ish. Try to give Photoshop ~1G and leave the rest to the system). Restart.
Quit unnecessary applications.
Try quitting Bridge and running Merge to HDR from File > Automate > Merge to HDR
Other things to test out in the Performance Preference panel
• Try a larger or the largest Tile Size - you've got it set to smallest. Not sure which is better for this case. • Try lowering History States to 5. Other, less likely, suspects:
Corrupt prefs: Reset preference file: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4209421#4209421
Same-named drive: Be sure there is no other directory is named identically to a folder in the Photoshop app path.
Conflict with "Open Documents as Tabs = OFF" Prefrence (Interface) setting.
Please let us know what ends up working best for your system.
Thanks,
Meredith
Also, if Remove Ghosts = ON, it sometimes selects an extreme exposure as its base image (noted by green frame around the thumbnail in the dialog). Try selecting a different base image - just click on a different thumbnail.
Are you still having issues after updating (Photoshop: Help > Updates...) ?
Do any of these solve the problem for you? -
Setting a fixed and consistent exposure level with merge to HDR Pro?
I do panoramas with sets of bracketed HDR images. From LR I select my stack and then merge to HDR pro in CC. CC then produces a screen with a white point preview slider or the option to tone in ACR. Since I want to tone in LR I have tried to set the white point consistently for each HDR output in the panorama set, but I cannot get consistent exposure levels. I then try to adjust them all the same in LR, but sometimes differences result in undesirable effects in the panorama stitched output.
How can I get a 32bit HDR from PS CC back to LR and have each stack come back in with exactly the same exposure without me trying to guess with a slider?
I task all the images for the panorama with identical settings. Same brackets, fstop , shutter speed, ISO, etc. I should be able to get them all processed into 32bit HDRs and looking the same without manual adjustment guesses.
Thanks.I'll tell you my workflow for panoramas such as this. Starting from bracketed stacks of images.
1. I select all images, go into Develop and turn on auto-sync. Turn on "Remove Chromatic Aberration". Do not turn on "Enable Profile Corrections". Set a custom white balance to make sure all images are WB'ed the same and optimize sharpening and noise reduction. Basically you want all images to be developed exactly the same and fairly conservative at that.
2. Export all images to 16-bit tiff in prophotoRGB or adobeRGB (depending on how colorful they are)
3. At this point one can add a logo to the nadir shot or do it at the end using the workflow I described above.
4. Load all images into hugin. Generate control points. Optimize positions - first just positions, then positions and view. Level the panorama in the GL preview and make sure the projection is set to equirectangular and the view to 360x180, then optimize view, barrel and positions and finally "everything without translation". During all these steps remove errant control points by going into the control point list and deleting the ones with the largest deviation, which are usually bad control points on clouds or other moving things. Also make sure the pano stays correctly leveled.
5. Mask the tripod out of the images that have it in them using the mask tools in hugin. Mask feet and stuff out of the nadir shot.
6. Do a photometric optimization with high dynamic range, fixed exposure.
7. Go to stitcher, set the optimum canvas size, uncheck "exposure corrected, low dynamic range", Check A. "exposure fused from any arrangement", B. "High dynamic range->tiff", or C. "blended layers of similar exposure, without exposure correction" depending on what you want to do.
8. Stitch
If you did A. You will get a tone mapped image that you can work up further in Lightroom or Photoshop. That image will be tone mapped respecting the wraparound on all sides so it won't have weird seams in a spherical projection. If you did B. you get a 32-bit tiff that will work great in Lightroom and as long as you don't use highlights, shadows, clarity and such will remain good. If you did C. you can load the multiple panorama layers you get into a HDR Pro in Photoshop, and load that into Lightroom. -
Auto-align Layers and Merge to HDR Pro crashes
Hi,
Has anybody else experienced crashes with Merge to HDR Pro or Auto-align Layers? I was trying to use Merge to HDR Pro from Lightroom and was experiencing crashes every time after it had opened all of the images and merged them into a single document (but before the HDR Pro dialog box had come up).
I've tested this further with opening each image individually and then trying to merge them as well as via Bridge and always get the same result.
I had then decided to try layering the images and blend them to create my HDR image and that's when I found that Auto-align Layers was crashing as well. This leads me to believe that it's actually the auto-align functionality that's causing the crash rather than Merge to HDR Pro as I'm pretty sure that the merge functionality performs an auto-align as part of its steps.
Any suggestions on how to fix this? I'm wondering if I may have to completely remove Photoshop. I can do this if necessary but if there's some other way to fix this I'd rather try that first.Okay, solved my own problem. I bit the bullet and did do a reinstall. I'd remembered that one of the previous Photoshop upgrades had failed (either 12.0.1 or 12.0.2) and I'd never gotten around to fixing it. Looking into that suggested reinstalling as the solution so I figured I should try uninstalling and reinstalling then apply all the upgrades and then try it again.
This time the upgrades did go through properly and I was just able to do a merge to HDR pro successfully so it looks like that's fixed the issue. -
CS6 64 HD Pro remove ghost disabled
Hi I'm using CS6 and trying to blend 2 images to HDR using the merge to HD Pro feature. I have used it before but now it appears that I can't select remove ghosts or select an image for prioritizing ghosts
I have tried photomatrix Pro and thats fine (but it was a trial).
I have tried impoting NEF, tiff and jpegs with no luck. I have also tried different bit depths which didn't help.
Any ideas?
ThanksI'm having exactly the same problem. Had no trouble with CS5, but when I "upgraded" to Photoshop CC, this problem started happening. The option to remove ghosts is grayed out regardless of whether the Merge to HDR was initiated in Bridge, Photoshop, or Lightroom. Anyone have any ideas? It doesn't seem to matter if the files are NEF, JPG, TIF...

Merge to HDR Pro - how to make it work?
The 'Automate -> Merge to HDR' feature worked fine during the first few weeks of my Ps CS5 trial but now doesn't work. Photoshop gets through the Merge to HDR Pro dialog but throws the attached error when returning to Ps.
If Merge to HDR Pro is chosen on DNG images from Lightroom 2.7 or Bridge CS5, Photoshop again gets through the Merge to HDR Pro dialog but when creating the HDR image and returning to Ps seems to throw it away with no resulting error. Photoshop just stares blankly with no image open.
I experienced the same error with CS4 and was excited when the Merge to HDR Pro feature on my CS5 trial worked fine, yet with 5 days left in the trial the HDR feature now refuses to cooperate. It previously was working OK from the Automate menu, from Lr 2.7, and from Bridge. What exactly I did to upset Photohop is a mystery.
I've tried resetting preferences and removing all plugins and extenstions to no avail. Any ideas on how to make Merge to HDR Pro functional? There has been a long and continuous thread regarding CS5 having problems when one tries to save images that have been combined in Merge to HDR Pro. I have exactly the same problem. I have been shooting 3 images bracketed -1, 0, +1 or -2, 0, +2. When I select 3 images in Bridge. Go to Tools>Ph otoshop>Merge to HDR Pro the computer does its work and produces an image of a combination of the 3. I can see the image, and in the Layers Panel I see 3 Layers plus one Layer that is entitled Merge to HDR Pro(layer is devoid of image. When I try to Save As Photoshop freezes up. I have 11 Screenshots to illustrate. Also Select 3 in BridgeI have tried many different sets of images. CS5 Crashes during Merge to HDR on Windows XP
HI,
CS5 crashes when I try to create an HDR from 3 RAW (CR2) files (select 3 files in MiniBridge, then select "Merger to HDR Pro" from tools ICON). It goes through the steps of building a composite image in CS5. I see a lot of entries being inserted into the history panel and see my RAW images show up as layers 1 by1. Eventually I get a progress box for "Update Lens Profile Database cache" followed by a progress box for "Align Selected Layers based on content". It crashes a few seconds after the "align layers" progress box appears. By this I mean that CS5 dissappears from the screen and I get a pop up saying "Adobe Photoshop CS5 has encountered a problem and needs to close" Etc. This error box allows me to send an error report to Microsoft (whopee). Bridge stays active in my System Tray. When I tried the merge additional times (4 to be exact), the same thing happened each time. This was running patch level 12.0.2 in first 3 attempts, and 12.0.03 in last two attempts.
To resolve this I reinstalled CS5, updated to patch 12.0.03, and tried again. Same sequence of events.
My next resolution attempt was to completely uninstall CS5 first, using the un-install feature in Windows Control Panel and also checking the "Remove Preferences" check box on the Adobe uninstall screen. I then reinstalled it, updated to patch 12.0.03 and tried again. Same thing.
To check my sanity (and to see if there was a problem with the specific photos), I installed CS5 on my lap top (running Windows/7 home) and was successfully able to merge the same 3 photos using the same steps. So, it seems the issue is not with the photos but some interaction between CS5 and Windows/XP.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

DVD looks awful on Sony Bravia 26" LCD
I've created many DVDs and always check them on a CRT TV. They always look great (given that they are shot on DV). However, I have purchased a Sony Bravia, and when I viewed the DVD it looked awful: smearing, blocky, traily, etc.
Given that most of my clients have LCDs or plasmas I'm worried that they will see a similar picture.
Does anyone have any tips for getting better results (apart from throwing away the Bravia)?
Thanks
I edit in FCP, uprezed the edit to 8 bit 4:2:2 uncompressed, encoded to mpeg2 with Bitvice, then used DVDSPro to create the DVDThose rates are the default bitVice settings and a good place to usually start. As the bit rate too high issue take a look at this link
[Bit Rate Too High|http://dvdstepbystep.com/faqs_3.php]
The way you describe the problem it sounds like something where Compression markers could help - basically it flags portions of the video which you want the encoder to really make sure it gets right. Press the "M" key over the timeline twice (first one sets the marker second brings up the dialog) where the issue is and set it to Compression Marker in the dialog.
If these issues are right before/after a cut sometimes changing the cut by a couple of frames can help or change the length of a dissolve by a couple of frames (I just had one thing where I had the ghosting and the rest and that took care of the issues, the problem areas were on the cuts/dissolves.)
Try sending the section with the problem from Final Cut directly to Compressor and also keep the timeline at DV to see if that helps (do not change codecs) in case there is something happening when you are switching codecs. That can also be a part of the issue. -
CS5 Merge To HDR Pro hangs Photoshop (Win 7, 64-bit)
Hi,
I've had Photoshop CS5 Extended for about 2 weeks. I'm using the 64 bit version with Windows 7 64 bit. So far it's been working ok but I'm now getting an issue with 'Merge to HDR Pro'. Once I've entered my settings and clicked 'ok' Photoshop stops responding. I have to start the 'Task Manager' and force quit Photoshop.
Is this a common issue or am I the only one whose getting it? Is there a solution?
ThanksThanks for your response.
In answer to your question I'm not entirely sure. My machine doesn't crash. When I go to Automate/Merge to HDR Pro I can browse to my files, choose them and alter the settings in the HDR Pro window until my image looks the way I want it to. But when I click 'OK' the process of generating the HDR file seems to begin then stop. I can see my original images in the layer stack inside Photoshop and an empty layer at the bottom of the stack called 'Merge to HDR Pro'. It doesn't get any further than that. The only thing I can do is go to my Task Manager, where Photoshop will be listed as 'Not Responding'. I use RAW files from my Canon 40D.
I can't give you very precise details about my system because I had it custom built and I'm not very good with technical stuff. I can tell you that it is a 64 bit machine with a 120Gb solid state primary HD running Windows 7 64bit, and 2 1Tb secondary drives. It currently has 6Gb RAM. The motherboard is overclocked. My gfx card is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 295.
Thanks again.

PS CS5 Crashing in Merge to HDR
PS CS5 has started crashing in Merge to HDR Pro again. I thought I had it fixed. None of the other problems are back, though, so maybe I do have what was happening before fixed. The crash report is the same for each crash this time, and it always crashes, at least with this set of photos, so it looks like the fault is repeatable. It's thread 4 which crashes now. Here's a copy of one of the reports (since I didn't look at the whole report, I made a copy of 2 crash reports in case anyone is interested, but am only posting the one right now):
