Merge two folders????

I have a large folder hierarchy that has all of my documents and files organized into folders & sub-folders. All in all were talking about 40 gigs worth of evidence, documents, and other assorted things.
Before I was converted from XP I could easily backup my files by dragging them onto my hard drive. Windows XP would then only transfer the new files and would prompt me to overwrite identical files to which I would always say "no". This would make backing up my evidence & documents easy and quick.
Now with OS X if I were to drag my documents folder onto that same pportable hard drive it just rewrites everything. The files on the portable hard drive in the "documents" folder are gone if I drag the "documents" folder from the system hard drive.
This is the only area where I miss XP. Back-up files takes me hours because ach time the entire documents folder is rewritten rather then simply the new documents.
This is a giant problem for me as I try to synchronize files from 3 different machines. Is there a way to merge these files ala Windows XP?

thanx guys....I checked them out. The qdea software looks great.....but the 100 buck price tag is scary! I can't bring myself to pay that much for something I could do for free in Windows. I might just keep on the way I am going. The first two software would work perfect for one machine...but I use several. I need to be able to 'sync' my hard drive between each.
On a side note......why can't OS X do this natively? I love OS X and it does everything better then Windows......except for this one issue. Is it a conscious choice by Apple's developers?

  • Merge two folders (Finder crash during Move)

i just had Finder quit again on a large move and rather than go through this set of folders and subfolders and subsubfolders to pick out what has transferred and what has not transferred i would like to MERGE this data and go into disk mode or move it in smaller chunks.
i am actually moving from a mac pro on lion to a mbp on mountain lion.
can anyone help me with this?
    TIA

we are doing a totally fresh install and we were moving data manually in root user mode.
You shouldn't be doing anything in the root user. You shouldn't even be booted into it. I don't understand not using Migration Assistant as you can pick and choose what to move Applications, data, settings... So, you could choose not to move Settings and start with a fresh set of prefs, if you were worried about "contaminating" your new Mac.
I've never tried to move a 55GB folder, so I don't know how reliable Finder is. AFA 'merge"
You should be able to merge the contents of two folders as long as you choose to copy those files instead of moving them. An option-drag should bring up the merge dialog?

  • Why cant you merge two folders on a MAC?

If i wish to add files from a folder with lesser files I must copu them from inside both folders.  If I drag a smaller folder to a location with a same name folde with more data in it the smaller folder is the only folder left.  The data in the larger folder goes to the trash with only asking if I want to copy over.  I would like to keep the unique files in the larger folder.

In Mountain Lion (10.8) you can hold the Option key when you drag a folder to get additional options for merging data, including keeping the newest version of similarly-named items.
I don't recall whether this was an option in 10.6.

  • Merge two folders software recommendations

can anyone give me an industrial strength recommendation for some "merge folders" software?
i am sure i have asked this before but i am not at the point where i can start tuning things up and this is a functionality that i could use.
i guess this would /not/ be in something like OmniDiskSweeper or in WhatSize...?
    THANKS

It is true that software that hasn't been updated since 2006 may not run on Lion.
So now your saying, (because I posted the Roaring Apps link), that I'm not lying after all right?
How about other programs that the OP may be using that hasn't gotten a Lion capable working update yet, your just going to disable their functionality so they can merge a couple of folders once?
It is not true that Lion is slower than Snow Leopard.
Can you give recent testing of Lion that it's now faster than Snow Leopard?
Because last time I've checked, online testers have shown Lion is slightly slower than Snow Leopard.
If your correct, then I stand corrected. I'm open to correction.
That is ridiculous and completely off-topic here.
Not so, you recommend Lion, they upgrade and then come back here to complain you gave them faulty advice and now they can't use X, Y or Z anymore and need to return to 10.6 to get their $40000 mega printer to work as there are no drivers for 10.7 or their several thousand dollar investment in software just disappeared in a puff of smoke.
You obviously never worked in the graphics industry.
    So?
So why bother if they are running a Intel Core Duo Mac, 32 bit that cant' run Lion.
Don't you think you should ask them first?

  • How to merge two folders together

    hi
i have a music folder on my desktop. under my "music folder" i have different genre's eg 'rnb folder' 'house folder' 'dance folder'
everytime i download new music i put it into which ever folder is dedicated to that specific genre.
    to keep things short:
i want to merge my music folder on my desktop with my music folder on my external hard drive.(so that my new music will be on my hard drive as well)
how do i do that?tried holding the 'option key' and the 'option, alt' on my keyboard as the other threads have mentioned.nothing works all i get is the option to "replace" or "stop". no merge option.
    running mountain lion osx10.8.4
    if anybody has some tips.
check youtube vids and other websites doesnt give the "merge" option.

If you can make it work in the console, then you use the same string in the plugin.

  • How to merge 3 folders in finder?

The thing is I have multiple finder windows open and have these three folders that have the same name each in their own directory.
I simply hold option and drag so that one is copied from one directory to another dirctory on my computer.
I do the same to another folder and a pop-up ( as I expected) come up and asks whether to keep the newer files. I click yes keep the newer files.
I was relived and thought that I could do this for the third folder but for some strange reason I get a more stern ultimatium, whether to stop the copying of the folder or replace the folder entirely so that only the third folder remains and the previous two I merged together become removed from my computer.
my question is how can I merge together all three folders?

Their isn't any easier way to do this?
And also this exactly what I ended up doing, Thank a lot.
    This really helped me..
But I guess my question is now more along the lines of why after my atempt to merge the third folder does the promt in the pop-up change, from when I simply just wanted to merge two folders?

  • How to Merge the Contents of Two Folders in Lion, Keeping the Newer Versions of Duplicate Files.

Select and copy all the contents of the folder containing the newer files.  Paste the files ONTO the folder containing the older files.  The unique files will be copied into the older folder without further ado.  For the duplicates, a window will appear warning that a file with the same name already exists in the older folder.  Check the "Apply to All" box and click on the Replace button, not the Skip button.  These steps will merge all the files in the newer folder into the older folder, replacing the duplicates with the copies from the newer folder.
Unfortunately, the only information that the warning window provides about the duplicates is their common name, not sizes, dates, or times.  These steps worked for me because I knew for certain that all the newer files were in one folder.

Great, I just lost 10 GB of data thanks to OSX folder merge... because appaerantly I should have known better not to keep a subfolder inside my folder I was trying to merge
I can not beleive more people don't have a problem with this. Merge contents in Lion does NOT merge contents if 1 or more of those supposed "contents" is a subfolder
Merge contents of two folders only works for files, it does NOT work for subfolders!!!!
Can we please get this acknowledged as a bug that needs fixing?
    EXAMPLE:
    Drive1 / Folder1
                   - text1.txt
                   - text2.txt
                   - / subfolder / text3.text
    MERGE TO
    Drive2 / Folder1
                   - text1.txt  (this gets updated / merged)
                   - text2.txt  (this gets updated / merged)
                   - / subfolder /
                             - text.txt
                             - text2.txt     (this should get text3.txt merged into it, from Drive1, but instead this subfolder is REPLACED, and NOT MERGED!!)
Why would i want to replace a folder if I'm trying to merge it!?
Almost 2013 and OSX still cant merge a folder? unbelievable

  • How to merge two Mail folders hierarchy ?

I've got two Mac. On both I use Mail app. I've created many folders and sub-folders to sort my emails on each of them.
This folder hierarchy is not exacly the same on each Mac.
I wish to merge these two folders hierarchy in order to have the same folder hierarchy and mails on each Mac.
Is there a way or a soft able to do that 'cause I can't do that manually (too many mails and folders)
Example : if a mail 'A' has been put into a folder X of the first Mac,and a mail 'B' has been put in a the same folder on the second Mac, I want to have mails A & B in the same folder X on each Mac. if a folder exists on first Mac, it must be created on second Mac. etc etc
    Any idea ?
    thanks

Don't try to merge or replace the System Folder & Library Folder on the new install of Yosemite. You will corrupt your operating system. If someone told you to do that, they are idiots.
I would assume you have booted into the new install of Yosemite and created a new user account on it already. Options would depend on if the old user account has the same name as the one you just created.
Easiest thing for you to do at this point is to copy your documents from the external drive from your old user account to the new user account. And, just reinstall any applications from scratch.
Other people may be able to give better advice on what you need to do. But maybe give a bit more info.
Be specific on what you have done so far as to any changes you've made so far.
What was the old system you were running? Did you clone the old system to the external, or just copy folders?
Also, what do you need from the external drive? Documents can be copied easily. iPhoto Libraries, iTunes Libraries, Mail, etc. are a bit more complicated.

  • Merging two large scans

i am trying to merge a set of "two-sided" scans of roughly 100+ pages which i now have of a "front" and "back" side for. Basically I am going to have a pdf of each of these and I am going to keep the images in two folders as well.
aside from the fact that i will have to do a little culling where a scan added an extra bad page due to a bad feed or in making sure that the documents and/or images line up - is there a way to merge these two into one document that goes front-back-front-back etc like the original document?
i tried getting advice on how to get this hp 8500 all in one scanner to do the two sided scan on its own but my recollection was that I was unlikely to get this to work.
    TIA for any advice.
    Jon

    Thank you.
I actually need the different margins to allow for 3-hole punch. This was created from an HTML file and scripts were written to give me the margin space that I need but each document had to be run just one way which is why I now have to merge the even/odd pages. Apparently there is a script that will do this.

  • How do I merge 2 folders in my photo stream

I have two folders of photos in my photo stream that I want to merge.  Does anyone know how to do this please
    Thanks

After my iCloud became full I backed up my photos and I have been searching online for a while for an answer to this question. Here's what I did
On my Windows 7 computer that has iTunes and that I configured to use with the iCloud I went to my pictures and my photo stream and you can use shift click or control click to select multiple, or drag around them, or use keystroke..control a ... To select all, Then push the delete key on the keyboard and it will automatically sync that with the iCloud. Make sure you back up everything first somewhere else, because it will delete from all devices.
    I hope this helps!

  • Ok, my problem....merging two unique files batch Process

Ok, my problem....I have been deconstructing films, so I have thousands of picture files for batch processing in Photoshop (Resizing etc) What I would like to do is batch merge two or maybe three lots of deconstructed film footage image files from different sources, one as a background film image file and one as the forground film image file layer, thousands of images all at once, after they have been processed first in photoshop, so I have seperate folders with the image files in each folder, they need to be combined in sequence as I want the image/frame numbers to match up in each folder, then combined to non merged layers and saved into another folder, I want non merged layers, so I can use an action later to balance the overlay. I know premiere and After Effects could maybe do this, but I am looking for a different kind of effect.....thanks

This might help, but very probably one of the more experienced Scripters has a Script (possibly with a more comfortable interface or more features) for that, too:
    #target photoshop
    // dialog for folder-selection;
    var theFolderOne = Folder.selectDialog ("select a folder containing the backgoround images");
    var theFolderTwo = Folder.selectDialog ("select a folder containing the foreground images");

    if (theFolderOne && theFolderTwo && theFolderThree) {
    var theFilesOne = theFolderOne.getFiles(checkFor);
    var theFilesTwo = theFolderTwo.getFiles(checkFor);

  • Merging two albums.

Is there a way to merge two albums (inside the same folder) on iPhoto?
Inside certain folders in my iPhoto library I have many albums entitled 'untitled album 1,2,3,4 etc.' This is because whenever I drag and drop a group of photos into a folder in iPhoto, it automatically creates a new album inside that folder. I would like to merge 'untitled album 1' with 'untitled album 2' how can I do this? This is not a question about events.
    Any help much appreciated!

    Drag one onto the other?
Select one and selcet all and drag all the photos to another??
What are you trying and what is not working?

How to merge two Outlook 2010 pst data files?

Easy way: with the one you want to use open in Outlook and the other one not in your profile, go to File, Open, Import.
If you only want to merge some content, open both pst files in outlook and drag between folders. For calendar, use a list view to see all of the appointments.

  • Merging Mail Folders from 2 machines

I have a MacBook Pro and a G5 iMac. When traveling, I use the MacBook Pro primarily. Whan at home, the G5 primarily.
My problem has to do with mail folders (mailboxes)
I have folders mirrored on both machines.
However, there are some messages stored on the MacBook Pro folder that don't exist on the G5, and vice versa.
I am in the process of selling the G5, and want all pertinent messages to be transferred to the MacBook Pro.
Is there a way of merging two mail folders (that have the same name, but on different machines) so that all messages are contained in one folder.
Can I merely copy the contents of one mail folder into the other, and re-import?
    Thanks, in advance

that's why I only use IMAP accounts. no issues with syncing.
you can't merge different mail folders and there is no easy way to do what you want. the best you can do i the following. on G5 put the messages that are missing from the MBP into one mailbox (make a new mailbox if you have to) and export this mailbox using mailbox menu->archive mailbox. This step can be unpleasant If you are not sure which exactly messages you need. then move the archive to the MBP and import it to mail there using File menu->import mailboxes. it will import it to a local mailbox in "on my mac" section. you can move the messages from there where you want to.
