Merge two HDD partitions

Hey all..
I have a problem concerning my external HDD. Back in time, I created 2 partitions on my external 500Gb HDD. Now I don't need one of the partitions and has erased it, but need the space on the other partition, so I want to merge the two partitions into one again. Is this possible? The problem is that I don't have space on my MacBook to move all the files to the computer and format the HDD into one partition, so I have to, in one way or another, merge the partitions. Anyone who knows how to do that?
Greetings

Hi! I've used the instructions before but can't remember the exact details. I think what it is talking about is the partition you are changing (ie the one being deleted) will be the one losing data and the space will be returned to the original volume from which it was created. I know this is the way it works using Diskstudio which I have used several times. But be sure you are confident with what you read and decide to do. Tom

How to merge two adjacent partitions?

The formal steps are delete the second partition and right click on first one, choose "extend".
Of course this will erase data on second partition.
Some third party tools can help do the job with keep data on second partition.

  • Merging two partitions

    hi
i used bootcamp to partition by hard drive into two.
and while installing ubuntu i converted the fat32 to ext3
and then i wanted to remove ubuntu from my macbook,
i thought bootcamp will detect ext3 but it didn't,
so i went back to ubuntu and converted the ext3 to fat32 using gparted.
then came back to mac os and started bootcamp and thought it will restore the fat32 to hfs partition but it says " the disk is already partitioned for windows and cannot re-partition it again",
so i used the disk utility to convert the fat32 to hfs+ partition,
now my macbook has two hfs+ partitions, i want to merge these two partitions.
can anyone suggest me how to merge two hfs partitions.
is there any freeware which can do this job?
or any licensed software that can do this?
or can the provided disk utility do this?

    Hi,
Mac has a very useful utility accessible from Terminal. I personally find it much better that the GUI Diskutility.
Start up Terminal in Utilities, and type "diskutil help" w/o the quotation marks. You will get a comprehensive list of items which you can do with your disk/volume. I have used it to create, delete, merge, resize volumes/partitions without losing data. Nevertheless you should always backup before venturing. Hope this helps.

  • How to merge two storage drives into one partition-help

THis is on an iPad-Please excuse for any typos
I Am working on a project of restoring a macbook pro from old parts that I found. It works!!! But the HDD that i salvadged is ancient and gets about .15 MBPS. Not good. Its an apple certified and apple branded toshiba HDD-500G at 5400RPM. Yeah. *****
I am considering buying a new hard drive as a 480GB SSD, and using OWC's Data doubler, adding a second HDD, for all the photos and vids i will be collecting through my work in video and photo. I am considering getting an SSHD (SSD+HDD in an SSD form factor) and using this as the second drive. its not much more expensive (like 10$ more) and itgetsme semi-SSD like performance on a mass scale of storage.
HOw can I combine these two drives into ONE partition? 480GB will take awhile to fill up, but this is a future proof wall to use.
I Will eventually invest in an external storage option (2-3 HDDS in one caddy for backups and storing 1080p video all under one roof. depends if the board im using actually has thunderbolt or usb that is fast enough-because of the crappy hdd i cant get it to boot into an OS or go through usb recovery without it freezing. I ahve tried re-applying thermal paste, still doesnt help)
HOw can i easily partition these two drives into one?
also, my friend needs a new HDD because bootup times in his macbook pro are at like 2 mins+ and hes running Core 2 Duo, with 8 G ram and 10.9 (Mav) should i recommend an SSHD or an ssd. (He doesnt want an HDD, hes had bad 'voodoo' with em'. Thanks!

  • How to merge two partitions on lion

    Hello everyone.
I have a big problem... I want to merge two partitions... (I know, disk utility...).
In fact, I can't merge a partion which looks locked, with my lion partition via disk utility.
On this locked partition I had my old snow leopard OS still installed before deleting it, I wanted at th begining just try lion, and do a fresh install. (which is donenow)
Some more informations for you :
I have windows 7 via bootcamp installed.
Also, I have a save of my booting partition on time machine.
    Thanks for your help
    Darklink
ps : I'm french, so, sorry for mistackes

Even if software is going to make it happen, you are still faced with the possibility of power failure in the process, which would wipe the entire drive in one swoop if it happens at the wrong time.    Better to clone both partitions to a larger hard drive, and then erase, repartition, and copy back over the boot data first, and import the rest by hand.

  • How to merge two seperate free space into single partition/volume???

    Hey guys :)
Please help me on merging two unallocated free spaces in my internal harddisk. I already tried searching for options in diskmanagement but nothing found to do that. The harddisk has two free spaces(1gb and 50.78gb) now, I want to merge them into single one
and finally as a single parition/volume. Is there any other method or should use any other third party tool?
I really wanted to attach a screenshot but sadly microsoft couldn't allow me.

    JAJ
You need a third party tool like Easeus Partition Manager
    Wanikiya and Dyami--Team Zigzag
Sure I'll try that. Thank you very much :)
But it is really sad to say that it is real drawback of windows as it doesn't have its own choice in diskmanagement utility.

  • I want to make three HDD partitions on Satellite A200-1GB

    Hi all,
Yesterday night I noticed that there is a small sound comes out when Hard disk is being read. The sound same as the Desktop Hard disk sound. In desktop HDD's that's normal.
I thought that Notebook's HDD doesn't sound like that even it has the same technology of Desktop HDDs.
    Is that also normal thing?
The other thing is I thought to divide my second partition (D drive) in two partitions because I can have separate three partitions then.
If I do it using Disk management will it give any matters?
In desktop PC's I have done many operations on HDD's with Win XP but I have no experience on notebooks. is there any difference between desktops and notebooks running WXP?
I hope to divide my second partition (93 GB) in two as 45GB & 45GB.
Can anyone give idea about this and is any body have done this operation?

My notebooks HDD makes a loud sound and since 2 years it has been running ok.
I presume its nothing serious due to the fact that the A200 is not an old series and the HDD is new.

No everything should works. But I think XP OS is not able to create an HDD partition. You will have to use an 3rd party program like Partitions Magic 8 for example.

No feel free to create an partition.

    Use the Partitions magic 8

  • New OS install - what to do with Lenovo HDD partitions?

So i bought G555 500GB HDD version and when i was trying to install new OS i noticed something weird. HDD was already partitione into 4 parts, first was Some system part 29,3 GB, then some primary part or something 29,3 GB, then HDD 400GB and then some LEnovo part very small something about OEM.
So apart from that its only 460GB not 500GB i wanted to know if i can Format those first sections without worries so that i can install my OS there or maybe if i wanted to merge them and partition differently?
Moderator edit: Added detail to subject.

Create a recovery disk set first using OneKey Recovery. Then you can do anything to your disk.

  • What are the G550 HDD partitions for?

There are four partitions on the HDD. I understand C: is the main one, and D: is for the OneTouch backup, right? What are the other two for? Can I remove them?

This is funny: I just recreated the entire Harddrive using the recovery DVDs, now the two primary partitions are gone and the space is integrated into the system one, lovely :)
Is this maybe a faulty pre installation ?

  • W510 - Two HDDs - Two Windows Setup

    Hi all,
I have purchased a hdd caddy from ebay, which works fine and a second SSD (which will arrive this week) for my W510. My intention is to have a second Windows 7 installed on the second drive purely for work purposes, so that the primary HDD will remain only for personal stuff.
My questoin is - can I (and how) use the Recovery DVDs that I've created from the second partition that came with the laptop to restore to factory state Windows and Lenovo software on the second HDD. Will booting from an external DVD drive work and will it let me select the second HDD as the restore target? Alternatively if that doesn't work can I swap the primary hdd with the second one, restore and then swap them again? Will that screw up the windows installation when booting from a different hdd "slot"? Which do you recommend?
    Thanks in advance!

    To answer my own questions.
Factory Restoring a second HDD in the UltraBay using the Recovery DVDs doesn't work because it doesn't allow you to select a drive and only refers to the "system drive" - which is 99.9% the primary drive.
Swapping the primary HDD with the secondary, using the recovery disks and then swapping again works fine - there are no issues in Windows whatsoever.
Also a tip - once you have the two HDDs setup with two Windows copies you can switch between them using the BIOS boot menu using F12 key at boot, which should allow for Hibernation to work fine for both at the same time

  • Dual boot with Two HDDs using GRUB?

I thought I understood GRUB but this has got me puzzled.
    If I have two HDDs:
    hd0 = XP
    hd1,0 = Vista
hd1,1 = Arch (I installed GRUB to this partition as well)
and I want to use NTLDR to chainload GRUB, how do I do it if NTLDR is on (hd0,0)?
On a normal (single HDD) dual boot setup it is quite easy: install the GRUB files to (hd0,1), dd the first 512 bytes in /dev/hda2 and copy it to hda1, then edit the boot.ini file in hda1 to load the dd image saved there.
However, when NTLDR is on (hd0,0) and the GRUB stage1.5 and stage2 files are on (hd1,1) how can I achieve a dual boot system using NTLDR to chainload GRUB?  Can GRUB stage1 load from (hd0,0) and look for stage1.5/stage2 on a completely separate hard drive (hd1,1)?  Or can't it be done?
As I said, it's got me beat.  Has anyone achieved this?

    See this for details.
I don't think so -- the use of a bind mount means that the kernel image can go in the standard location, that's the whole point of it.
@OP: Yes, just make sure to call the path to the respective kernel images relative to $ESP

  • Please help me to merge two places.sqlite to get my old and New history at the same time, every time i rename my two places.sqlite to see my old and new history

every time i rename my new places.sqlite to see my old history and come back rename old places.sqlite to see my new history, i tired and i found No Way to merge two places.sqlite :( but it's must be found this way for The PPL to see their old and new history :(
    Thank You all in Advance

You can't merge history otherwise then using Sync to store the history and bookmarks of one places.sqlite on the Sync server and then disconnect.<br />
Copy the second places.sqlite file to your Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed.
Then setup Sync once again using that account and merge the content on the Sync server with your computer.

  • How do I merge two valid, purchased iTunes accounts into one so all my music is in same account?

I have two valid, purchasd iTunes accounts.  Older iPod has some great music, I just got a new iPad and set up second iTunes account, bought some more iTunes items for that account.  Just discovered iCloud.  Now I want to put all my music from both accounts onto the cloud so I can access it on all my apple devices.   Can't seem to add from one account to the other.  Can sign onto the new account wiht my old iPod, but it will not let me sync without erasing all the music on the device.  How can I merge these two accounts into one?

You cannot. iTunes pruchases remian tied to the account they were purchased with.
I just got a new iPad and set up second iTunes account,
    Why?
Remove your info from new account, update old account as needed and use that.

  • How can I merge two iPhoto libraries stored on an external drive?

Today I was in a One-to-One at the Apple Store.  I want to merge two i-Photo libraries into one.  One library is on my Air, the other is on my iMac.  Both libraries have been moved to an external drive.  When I try to move one onto the other, they won't go.  Yet I am certain that while at the store today, the person there started to merge them.  He did not need the library manager software in order to do so.  We stopped the merge in order to move on to another issue.  Now that I am home, I can't get the libraries to merge.  What am I failing to do?  Thanks!

The only way to merge two libraryies is to use  iPhoto Library Manager which will merge two libraries and keep keywords, titles, faces, places, and other metadata intact.
If one imports one library into another library every image file in the first library, originals, thumbnails, face files, etc,  get imported as an original photo. You will end up with a total mess.  DO NOT IMPORT ONE LIBRARY INTO ANOTHER LIBRARY!
If you have backup copies of your libraries get them back and use iPhoto Library Manager to merge them.
