Merged clip reconnect

Saw that someone else posted this problem, but hopefully there will be an answer floating among you this time.
This problem came up in 5 as a project file was transferred over to another machine running 5 and I also recreated the same problem in 4.5 via xml. Hope someone out there can help out.
I have various video clips that have been merged with audio for the project. When I hand off the project file and media there is a problem with the media reconnect. All of the individual audio files and individual video clips reconnect just fine, but the merged clips won't reconnect. I can run through the normal procedure, selecting the clip with the appropriate name, but nothing really happens. The program seems to have gotten confused over the association of the audio that was supposed to be linked to it.
There is a lot of work already done here with the syncing as well as assemble edit in a lot of sequences - I'd rather not have to recreate those merged clips as independent clips (through media manager or however that might be done). Any ideas? I'd very much appreciate any help.
Thanks,
Josh

Hello.
One thing you will need to research is something called "Destination Controls". Just because you have 4 tracks of audio on a source clip, does not mean that every one of those tracks has to be edited to your timeline. Destination Controls are the little tabs on the left side of the timeline that are just to the right of the green track enable buttons. These little things will allow you to change the location of the destination tracks when you perform an edit to the timeline. When editing your XDCAM clips, just disconnect the destination controls for your audio tracks, although you may want to keep at least one track enabled to help sync up your audio.
A couple of other things you'll need to read up on are the "mark clip" and "Match Frame" functions. I described the use of these 2 functions in a different thread. Click Here. The difference with your case is that you'll need to use the "Slip" tool to keep the duration of the audio clip, but slip it's in and out points to bring it in sync with your video.

  • How do I get my merged clips to reconnect with their audio?

I am on FCP 7 syncing audio and video with ProRes 4444 @ 23.98. I am merging clips into bins labeled according to their scene. Pretty straight forward.
We then decided to go to ProRes 422 proxy to edit on a smaller faster drive at a lower cost. I transcoded the footage to 422 proxy with MPEG Streamclip same frame rate, same dimensions 1920x1080.
Next I go to relink the footage. Audio relinks and gives me this message: (Keep in mind these are copy and pasted files on the new hard drive).
"Some attributes of one or more of the files you have chosen do not match the attributes of the original.... The attributes that differed are as follows:
    - Media start and end
Would you like to try to reconnect them again?"
Video relinks and gives me the same message, but adds "reel" as another attribute.
I've seen these messages before and nothing has come of it so I didn't think anything of it at first. Checking all the individual audio and video clips. Everything is playing fine.
THEN I go to play my merged clips... no audio!? Double click a merged clip in the browser, clip plays in the viewer but NO AUDIO. Right click on the merged clip file, select Item Properties and format. It is recognizing the correct audio clip that should be playing in the info there. I drag the clip into the timeline and I can see the shadow of the audio and video clip but when I let go in the timeline only the video appears.
How can this be?? What am I missing??
I would be so grateful for any ideas you might have!

What happens if you control click on the audio clip in the timeline and choose "reveal in finder?"

  • Media Manger won't reconnect Merged Clips

I have a project that has tons of merged clips (Video synced to Audio .wav files). All is well within the project, but if I try to use Media Manager to copy media and duplicate it into a new project, it cannot reconnect the Merged Clips. Video comes through fine, but audio is missing --- getting an unknown error when trying to reconnect clips to the copied file. Any idea what might be going on here?

A few other pieces of info that might help-- the clips DO have reel names (I notice lots of talk about Media Manager problems if there is no reel name). Also, if I try to Reconnect the .wav Audio file to the missing Audio in the New Project, I get a message saying there is not enough Media in the clip to Reconnect.
Also-- i'm running 6.0.2, perhaps there is a glitch in this version? I'm in the midst of a major project right now, and am extremely reluctant to upgrade until it's complete.
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Merged clips won't reconnect

I have a film project that was shot with with seperate sound. I have gone in and make subclips of all takes in the film transfer and aif audio file. I have then merged each clip using IN points and made a cut using them. yesterday I exported the whole project as an xml and passed the project to another editor. Importing that xml give me what look like the proper clips but the merged clips won't reconnect to the audio properly. And it also looks like all the 'merged' clips have changed from their original lengths (12 secs, 30 secs) to long durations of 48 minutes, 1:09:00... the full lengths of my master clips. Something has gone awry with these merged clips. Can't find much in the archives... anyone seen and fixed any issues with reconnecting merged clips?

I have search message boards far and wide to find this answer.. the only thing I've found thus far is one user who had this happen said the metadata of his audio clips became corrupted.

  • Reconnecting merged clips???

    Hi guys,

  • CS6.0.2 Merged clip bugs

Having struggled with my typical editing style using dual sync sound i've been able to replicate a few bugs, by listing them here my hope is to get other editors using "merged clips" with dual sync sound can find a solution around them.  This has come up a few times in the forums but hasn't specifically addressed the bugs.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4503977
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4676617#4676617
These bugs are with using Merged clips.
    1. using the match frame command from a clip in a sequence and then using a replace edit from source monitor on another clip, matches frame on video, but sync is off on the audio.  Using match frame on the newly replaced clip does reconnect to the correct timecode with the audio in sync, however the audio and video in and out points do not line up with the matched frame clip.  So you can't just use the overwrite edit with the matched framed merged clip.  Once you've matched frame with the incorrectly referenced audio, you can not use the replace edit command again, it gets grayed out.
    2. This same bug occurs when find an merged clip in the browser, creating in and out points and using the replace clip command from bin. The audio is out of sync and replace edit command becomes grayed out.
    3. Once the mismatch in the audio sync has occurred from the replace with match frame, the merged clip in the bin when loaded into the source monitor shows the inpoint and out point of the video, and a separate in and out point of the audio, which is not aligned properly like it was when it was originally created. Only when the in and out point of the audio and video are manually changed does the merged clip become a unified clip again. (one in and out point referencing both audio and video)
if anyone else can replicate this bugs it would be appreciated.
My clips have been manually synced in premiere, would be interested to see if pluraleyes' behavior is any different, but I don't have access to pluraleyes for Premiere if anyone can test.

Unfortunately this is not a spanned clip problem with Adobe or Panasonic. This issue does come up from time to time.
Be sure when you pull the card from your camcorder, you LOCK IT immediately. Then it becomes impossible to change anything on the card purposely or inadvertantly (and as you are aware, changing anything - structure, file names, ANYTHING - on the card will blow the whole operation, so locking it is perfect). Also, sometimes Mac users have problems when they fail to lock their cards, because Mac OS immediately starts writing files to the card if it's not locked.
When you're using the Media Browser in PPro, be certain that you are viewing the clips in AVCHD mode (there's a dropdown option for this right there in the Media Browser). If you're importing individual clips from a single continuous recording, you're NOT in AVCHD mode, and this will always cause the problem you are describing.
I don't mean to lay this out as "you're doing it wrong" but unfortunately this is all very well documented at this point, and whenever there is a problem with spanned clips, it is 100% of the time due to a user that renamed something, moved files, or otherwise didn't follow the complete rules of AVCHD management. I don't normally use a term like 100% (tend to prefer 99.9%) but I say 100% because it is absolute in this case.

  • Moving project breaks merged clips...

    Hello,
This is a complex and difficult problem to describe by writing, apologies if it's not clear. I've been working for several months on a large project that was shot double system: video imported as Pro Res (shot in HDV) and audio (recorded on DAT) that was transfered to aiff files. So I had 43 cassettes of video (with each shot automaticall being it's own clip - as it was HDV) and then 13 one hour aiff files of the DAT audio. In FCP I broke down each video clip and synced it with it's audio and created merged clips. I had trouble while creating the merged clips as detailed in this thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1818825&tstart=0). Originally the merged clips when opened has the audio and video totally out of sync and were useless, and when I went back and made the reel names match between the DAT aiff files and the video, then the re-merged the clips they were in sync. So everything has been okay since then.
Now, after working for months on one computer, I moved the entire project to another computer. I copied all of the files from the old computer into the new computer so the files and everything are the same. But upon opening the project on the new computer everything is offline and I need to re-connect all of the media. However when I do reconnect it all, now all of my merged clips (there are atleast 2000 of them) are all out of sync again (of note, when I reconnect I always get the error message "reel names doesn't match" and I choose "continue" as when ever I choose "try again" it wont reconnect the media). Is there any other way around this issue other than having to go back and spend another 3 weeks laboriously manually changing the reel names of and re-re-mergeing each of the thousands of indivdual merged clips (in order to have them be useable, in-sync merged clips)? Even if I do this, I know that in a few weeks I will be bringing the project back to the orginal computer, and again everything will be off line and then I'll have to once again change reel names for each clip, and re-re-re-merged them to get it all working again. Does anyone have any ideas or insights into this issue? Has anyone else atleast had to deal with this issue? Thanks!

It sounds like when you moved the material, you simply copied the folders instead of using Media Manager.
Preventing your problems is why MM exists. While MM may have it's detractors (I've been one of them), it has been improved in the more current FCP versions.
Read very carefully through the section in the Manual that covers it then use it to create a transportable copy of your project.

  • Strange behavior of merged clips on import

After much troubleshooting I've noticed more strange behavior in the reimport of merged clips from XML...
I have merged clips made out of film transfer and the audio from an aiff file. I can export and xml of a merged clip... all of about 30 seconds and when I reimport the clip from xml it is like 47 minutes long and will not reconnect the audio part of the merged clip. That is actually happening to ALL of my merged clips in a current film project.

  • Problem with Clip Usage and merged clips in CS6

The 'Clip Usage' drop-down menus don't seem to work in Premiere CS6 for merged clips. The info bar at the top of the project window correctly lists the number of times the viedo and audio from the clip has been used, and the downward-pointing arrow appears, but when you click on it... nothing happens. Same's true of the 'Video Usage' column in the main body of the project window. Non-merged clips work just fine.
Anyone know if this is just a problem with my project, or if it's a bug in Premiere? Had a lot of trouble with merged clips in CS5.5, and was hoping they'd be solved by CS6 - I've been using Creative Suite for a long time, and the lack of good merged clips support was always one of the challenges in persuading other indie editors to switch over from FCP...
    Thanks!

...and the lack of good merged clips support was always one of the challenges in persuading other indie editors to switch over from FCP...
I guess they just have to weigh that up against the lack of support they got from Apple for FCP in its entirety.

  • Is there a way of getting Merged Clips into After Effects?

    Hi,
When I import my premiere pro project into After effects (NOT VIA DYNAMIC LINK as we don't have prod. prem.) After Effects only sees the clips which aren't merged. Any fixes sensible work arounds for this, as currently I'm havbing to import the project ( a feature film...!) into Final Cut Pro then using Automatic Duck export out an AAF then using Automtaic Duck import that into After Effects.  I haven't thought about how to get it back into premiere yet...will probably finish it off in FCP.

I'm not sure if you have the capability, but did you try copying from your premiere sequence and then pasting into your after fx timeline? i was working with a MUCH shorter video with a mix of merged clips (interview footage) and video clips (b-roll). the video clips imported, but the merged clips did not. i put the timeline cursor to the right point in the after fx timeline, copied the premiere clip from the sequence, pasted it into after fx.

  • Serious error using merged clips

Premiere crashes when I try to use a merged clip. When I double click on the clip it loads into the preview panel, but when I perform any actions such as overwrite or insert or if I right-click on the clip I get this message: "Sorry, a serious error has occurred that requires Adobe Premiere Pro to shut down..."
    Here are the details:
All the clips I am using in the project are merged clips.
The video clips are AVCHD with reference audio, and the audio clips are .wav 48 MHz.
Running a Mac Pro OS X 10.9.3 and the latest update of Premiere Pro CC 2014
    I have tried the following:
turned off GPU accelerated preview in favour of software only
deleted the merged clip and re-created it (in case it was somehow corrupt)
opened the project with a different system user (to rule out user settings)
started a project from scratch, merging the same clips and then performing similar tasks
    emptied the After Effects cache
spent 90 minutes with tech support controlling my computer trying various things I'm not certain about
Wasting too much time. Tempted to revert to FCP until this is resolved. Please help.

I don't know about cc 2014, but in the past 5 months working in cc 7.2.1 & 7.2.2 I've found merged clips to be incredibly unstable/buggy. In one case a handful of merged clips were preventing me from importing sequences from other projects. I've run into issues where the match-frame function doesn't work with them, and worst of all every time I've used them they've significantly slowed down premiere (creating a very annoying lag between every interaction with the program).
My workaround has been to avoid merged clips at all costs, and instead use single-angle multicams to group video & audio from different sources. It ain't ideal, but it's been a far more stable workflow.
Don't know about the 2014 version - I'm afraid to give merged clips another serious try after all the headaches they've caused in the past. If anybody has seen improved stability with merged clips in the recent update I'd be very interested to hear.

  • How do I edit a merged clip in Audition, that was created in premiere to correct the synchronisation, and have it all updated to the premiere clip?

    Hello,
How do I edit a merged clip in Audition, that was created in premiere to correct the synchronisation, and have it all updated to the premiere clip?
I have tried several tutorials but these either:
    - show correction in premiere sequence (which is not practical; given the huge number of files we have)
    - or show the editing in audition of a sequence, not the clip.
We have started merging audio and video (removing the original audio during merge) but some of the merged clips are out of sync, so we need to correct manually, BUT we want to correct the merged clip, which may or may not end up being used, so we do not want to take it to the sequence as all we are doing is prepare the synced files for editing.
Any idea how I can correct the synchronisation in Audition?, when I right click on clip and select "Edit in Adobe Audition" I get a list of files but not a multitrack session where I can see my video and audio tracks.

if premiere pro doesn't sync your footage properly, and you have a huge number of files, you may want to look at pluraleyes.  there is a demo, and if it works properly, it would save you time to have it done right the first time, instead of tracking down random merged clips with bad sync.
premiere will either export a complete sequence or "edit clip in audition". the edit clip will create a copy of the original audio and open that in audition. there is no dynamic link, its just an audio file open in two programs at the same time.  since there is no dynamic link, its not possible to bring merged clips into audition.
Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Synchronizing audio and video with Merge Clips
Once created, the merged clip cannot be re-synchronized, or adjusted. You must make a new merged clip.
Merged clip audio results in mono track audio only.Final Cut Pro XML and AAF interchange formats are not supported.
this doesn't give me much hope that audition or any other adobe program outside of premiere will help you fix the problem merged clips.

  • Merged Clips Appear Off Line Yet Are Successfully Linked In CS 5.5

Hi there. I just migrated a feature documentary from an edit suite in a local production company to my home. We're using Adobe Production Premium CS 5.5, I tried to migrate the project using the Project Manager function of premiere. But no matter what combination of options I tried it failed everytime. Huge pain!
Anyway, the whole thing is nearly up and running again - but there is a problem with some of the merged clips. We were shooting on DSLRs, with a Zoom H4N dual audio system. Dual Eyes was then used to synch the clips. Which were then merged with the relevant video files in the various relevant bins.
Here lies the problem, obviously I had to go and relink all the media files. Grand job. Thought I was all done but then I noticed, that when I was linking "merged clips" they weren't coming up properly in the sequences. Like, they were there in the bins. They would appear if double clicked in the source monitor. You could even do an old "in and out" and drag your selection into the sequence, and all the extra Dual Eyes audio synchs would be there and ready for use. But, the ones that were already in the time line were not picking up anything, they were just off line.
I find this stuff hard to explain so attached is a screen grab and some explanation below.
A - Shows the panels with the media successfully linked.
B - Shows it double clicked and opened in the source monitor.
C - Shows where it should be in the time line. But its not linking.

Just tried moving the source files and relinking - no luck what so ever.
    Any other ideas?

  • Merge Clips is greyed out

I shot video on Canon 5D, converted to ProRes and imported into FCP 7. Audio was recorded separately on a JVC GY-HM100U (lens shut, so no video footage just sound) and imported into FCP. I've marked in on video and audio clips to merge them, but the merge clips button is greyed out. The clips are in the browser window. I've tried dragging them into the timeline and merging them there. Merge Clips is still greyed out.
    Help please!

  • Merged clips - are they all bugs or is there something wrong with my system?

I have to use merged clips to sync video and audio because making every clip a sequence is too cumbersome and doesn't give me thumbnails to help choose my shots. Apparently, merged clips are very buggy. I can't use colored markers because they don't get saved on merged clips. I can't use match frame on merged clips because they don't find the correct frame. I can't set a poster frame on a merged clip except with the "in" marker. Are all those problems bugs, or is there something wrong with my specific system. I trashed preferences to fix another problem unrelated to merged clips, but that didn't solve any of the clip problems.

I don't believe there's anything wrong with your system.
