Merging 2 libraries onto 1 Mac?

I have two Macs running separate iTunes libraries. The main one has all of my music (over 200 GB worth) and is used to sync my iPods and iPhone. I have a Macbook Pro that I use to sync my iPad to and I'd like to move the data over from that library to my main computer one.
I don't care if I lose the music because it's all on my main computer, but I don't want to lose all my iPad apps and settings. Is there a way I can easily move this over?
Thanks

Hey Tim,
If you want to move your iPad apps and settings to the other computer with a different library, just copy and drag into the iTunes app of the main computer, two different folders:
*iPad Apps location:* Music/iTunes Music/Mobile Applications
*iPad Backup file location:* Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
The backup file, make sure to paste it on the same exact location on the main Mac.
Hope this helps!

  • Merge iphoto libraries onto an external HDD

We have 3 macs at the house and they all have different Iphoto libraries. I would like to merge them all onto the one Library of the Imac with an External HDD. The problem is that a bunch of the pictures are on more than one of the computers. I was hoping that there was a way to import them but not import the duplicates like when I import from a camera.

You'll need to use iPhoto Library Manager to merge the Libraries. There is no other way to do it without losing versions or metadata.

  • Merging iPhoto Libraries from two Macs

Does anyone have a way of physically combining (not just sharing) iPhoto libraries from two macs? I'm hoping there's an easier, smarter way of doing it than just exporting all of the photos from one and importing them into the other and then just doing the reverse. Is there software that does this smarter? Can get rid of duplicates, etc.?

    Merge?
    Do you mean 'sync' libraries
The general term means when two Libraries (A and B) are compared and files in Library A are copied to Library B, while files in Library B are also copied to Library A so that both Libraries are identical.
This is bi-directional copying and you cannot do this with automatically with iPhoto. No Syncing software is capable of parsing the iPhoto Library in this manner. One or both of your Libraries will be damaged if you try this.
The nearest you can get to syncing is to use iPhoto Library Manager to move files/Albums/Events plus assoicated metadata between Libraries. This process cannot be automated.
The Export/Import route will not get your versions.

  • How do I merge 2 itunes libraries onto one Mac?

    Hi,
For a while now I've sync'd my iphone and ipad with my Macbook Air, but I'm now running out of disc space and want to start using my G5 for this. The problem I have is that there's a load of music on the Air that I either imported from CD or purchased that's not on the G5. To add to the issue, there are also a lot of duplicates between the 2 machines from CD's that I've imported onto both over the years.
So, how can I go about exporting the content from the Air into the G5 itunes library to ensure that I get all my music in one place with no duplication?
The photos are less of an issue as I've just copied them off iphoto on the Air and imported them into iphoto on the G5.
Lastly, when I do finally figure this out, will I have any issues when I connect the iphone and ipad to the G5 to sync?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dom.

I've been looking into this too. Tuneranger, Supersync, Powertunes and Syncopation are worth a look. I'm leaning towards Syncopation.
Not sure about the syncing issue. I'm sure someone will know.

  • Merging iTunes libraries onto a new computer?

    Hi,
I just purchased a new macbook and I want to sell my older macs. I have two, each with its own iTunes libraries (and associated files). These libraries are highly redundant, but not identical.
Is there an easy way to merge them and move them onto the new computer without being plagued by duplicates?
    Thanks in advance

Unfortunately, no, it is hard to somehow automerge a couple libraries and avoid duplicates. iTunes is very stupid in that it is no able to determine duplicate files and so treats all files the same and adds them all. Which is good because you don't want iTunes determining three tracks are the same song because they have the same artist and song title and throwing two in the trash when in fact one was a studio version, another a live version and the other an alternate outtake version. You would make a lot of people angry doing that.
So, iTunes leaves determining if tracks are duplicates up to the user. You can use the command to show duplicates, but that is only to help you determine which songs MIGHT be duplicates and leaves it up to you to make that determination.
Therefore, when adding tracks, like from other libraries, iTunes does not make any attempt to determine, warn, let alone restrict duplicate tracks.
About the only thing I can think of to help is to go into the libraries of the computers you are getting rid of and manually deleting stuff you know are duplicates. For example, on your main library you see you have 8 albums by U2. Go delete those albums from the other libraries. Repeat as necessary to at least get them other libraries reduced considerably. Then it will be much easier to try and determine where they are different to grab the different things to put into the main computer's library.
    Good luck,
    Patrick

  • Merging iphoto libraries onto a new computer?

I recently purchased a new macbook to replace my aging powerbook and imac.
Each of these computers has its own separate yet redundant iPhoto library and associated files (meaning there are plenty of duplicate photos, but many are unique). Addtionally, the iPhoto programs on these older computers are 2-4 years old. Is there any easy way to merge these two libraries and their associated image files and move it all onto the macbook without losing data about the photos or generating a lot of redundant images/files?
    Thanks!

Rename the two Libraries: Library A and Library B.
Copy the two libraries to the new machine.
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. It will ask you to choose a Library. Choose Library A. It will update it to an iPhoto 08 Library
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. It will ask you to choose a Library. Choose Library B. It will update it to an iPhoto 08 Library
Now you have two iPhoto 08 Libraries.
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its Merge feature to merge the two libraries.

  • Moving and Merging iPhoto Libraries From 2008 Macs to 2013 MacBook Pro

I have a late 2008 MacBook and an early 2008 iMac. Both are running Lion and iPhoto '08. I will be getting a new MacBook Pro Retina very shortly to replace my MacBook. I would like to move the iMac's iPhoto library to the new MacBook Pro and merge it with the MacBook's iPhoto library once that library is also on the MacBook Pro.  I obviously need to get all iPhoto libraries up to date prior to doing this. I think I have a plan to achieve this, as follows, but I would appreciate your help:
    1) Upgrade iMac to Mavericks (App store said that I need to do this prior to upgrading to iPhoto 9.5)
    2) Upgrade iMac's iPhoto to 9.5
    3) Use set-up assistant to migrate old MacBook to new MacBook Pro. This should upgrade the old MacBook's iPhoto library to the current iPhoto version on the MacBook Pro???
    4) Move the iMac's iPhoto library to the MacBook Pro (6,604 photos, approximately 27 gb)
    5) Merge the two iPhoto libraries using iPhoto Library Manager or Aperture (I have not decided which one yet)
Is this a plan that will work?
MacBook just has Ethernet and USB.  iMac has USB, Ethernet and FireWire.  MacBook Pro has Thunderbolt and USB.
I already need to buy a Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet adapter to transfer between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro.  I'd rather not have too buy another adapter just to transfer the iPhoto library from the iMac to the MacBook Pro.
Is there a way to do 4) on my wifi network using file sharing or some other method I may not be aware of just to transfer the 27 gb iPhoto library?
    Thank you.

    More simple.
Wait until you get the new machine. Copy the two libraries to the new machine. Open them, this will upgrade them to the same version. Then merge them.
Obviously, don't move them to the same folder, or rename one, so they don't overwrite each other.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
I would strongly caution you that Migration Assistant is not very reliable with iPhoto Libraries.

  • Two iMacs each with separate Apple ID.  Can I merge onto one Mac?

Two iMacs each with separate Apple ID.  Can I merge onto one Mac?

Yes, you can use the same computer for BACK UPS, RESTORING AND UPDATING. But that is it.
You cannot, however, use it to sync the different devices. iTunes will only recognize one device to sync with and if you sync any other devices with that iTunes library, it will replace what is on the phone with whatever is in the library. It cannot differentiate between devices. At most, it will jsut recognize that the phone has been synced with a different iTunes library.
So if you would like to use the same computer for backing up, restoring and updating, just make sure to turn of Automatic Syncing in your iTunes Preferences.

  • I created two iTunes libraries on my mac mini and would like to merge them into one library. What is the easiest way to do this?

I created two iTunes libraries on my mac mini back in the day. I would like to consolidate them into one iTunes library. What is the easiest method to do this? I do use i-Match to access all my music from  iCloud, if that makes any difference.  Thanks. Mark

Thanks for the reply. When I created the 2 libraries years ago I would hold down the options key and had 2 library names to choose from. Now it just shows a lot of files when I do that, With over 7,000 songs I think I will just look for the few songs from the original library I used to use that still interest me, if they don't show up in my default current library. Thought there would be any easy was to integrate all my music files into one library. I am definitely not going to spend days manually doing this, but thanks again.

  • Merging iPhoto libraries on mac with 2 users

Hi, I have iphoto manager but can't figure out how to merge iphoto libraries
I have my daughters macbook as she passed away in May
I used time capsule to move the contents of my macbook to hers but it made as new user
I want all the photos in one library on my user account but I can't choose her iphoto library as
it says I don't have permission
Weird how everything is on one computer but having 2 users seems like you can only access your own stuff
I just want to have all photos on my iphoto
    Any help?

This worked thank u so much
Another quick question, iTunes doesn't seem to be aware that id like to use this computer as my new home base
I think I already had it authorized as we shared songs.
I had checked that I wanted certain faces from iPhoto but it included quite a few I didn't have checked
I'm not sure how to tell it this is my "new computer"

  • How do I save 2 iphoto libraries onto one external drive?

    Hi
I have an iphoto library on my MacBook Pro and I have an older library of different photos on my graphite iBook.
I'd like to store all my photos onto one external drive.
How can I do this without losing either library in the process?
I actually have the same question regarding music on iTunes.
    Thanks
    AS

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Do you want to merge these libraries into one? If so, then you'll need the paid version ($20) of  iPhoto Library Manager
It's the only way to merge Libraries while preserving all metadata, versions and so on.
Otherwise, simply rename one of the Libraries (so they don't overwite each other) and Copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder to the External Disk. in each case.
To choose which library to open: holf down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location.

  • Really struggling with 10.10 and merging iPhoto libraries

I imported my old iPhoto Library via firewire (from Mac mini 1.6 10.6 to Mini 2.53 10.10)
My 2.53 has about 1000 images on it, as I had been downloading / using as main computer
I imported old library onto my desktop of Mini 2.53
I opened the file on desktop, iPhoto said did I want to change library (you would have thought it would have offered option to merge), I said yes and then it went through a long process of updating photos.  After one failed / crashed attempts and a few hours later ! success !  ... my old photo Library 225GB ... working and still sitting on my desktop.
Now ... next thing I want to do is merge this Library / import into the one I have on my 2.53 mini (1000 or so images)
1st thing ... finder in 10.10 is so poor that you can't navigate, you can't find anything (10.6 x1000 better) so I can't move the desktop iPhoto (old) library) into the picture folder
2nd I open IPhoto and ask to switch (from old library which has now become default) to the one which was on the 2.53 , and there seems to be 2 options iPhoto Library and one option IPhoto Old Library, I select one of the iPhoto Library and then iPhoto says needs to repair but not enough disk space ...
Really unworkable (I am finding 10.10) ... Snow Leopard was so good.
    Thanks for your help

Now ... next thing I want to do is merge this Library / import into the one I have on my 2.53 mini (1000 or so images)
    iPhoto cannot merge libraries.
You can just switch between the libraries and view them in turn.
If you try to import one library into the other you will create a mess of duplicates - thumbnails, previews, etc. You should be glad, that iPhoto did not let you do this. It would have wrecked your iPhoto library.
To merge iPhoto libraries you can use the full, paid version of iPhoto Library Manager:  Fat Cat Software – iPhoto Library Manager
It s a very useful addition to iPhoto and has rescued many libraries.
The other option is to export the photos from library 1 and import the exported photos into library 2.
I select one of the iPhoto Library and then iPhoto says needs to repair but not enough disk space ...
If you are short of storage do all merging and preparing your libraries on the external drive. It is risky to update or work with iPhoto libraries, if you are in danger of running out of storage and having iPhoto crash. That may corrupt your iPhoto library beyond repair.
If you want to use an external drive, if only temporary, make sure the drive has the correct file system. The drive needs to be formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled).  See:  iPhoto: Issues with FAT32-formatted drives
Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture
Really unworkable (I am finding 10.10) ... Snow Leopard was so good.
It is a large step from Snow to Yosemite. I loved SnowLeopard to. It is well designed and stable, but yosemite has many things to offer.

  • Can't merge "duplicate" libraries on the same computer

    MAC PRO
    OSX 10.6.8, Aperture 3.2.4
I'm trying to merge two libraries on the same mac (different drives). The libraries were duplicates at one time but have since changed - I've added photos to both of these libraries (unintentionally) to the point where both are different sizes and not true duplicates any longer. Trying to merge the two libraries back into one isn't allowed as Aperture says it's a duplicate "of the library currently running."
I have been able to export an individual project as its own library then merge it into the same project in the other library but not everything all at once.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I discovered the fix for this issue. Supposedly the problem occurs when an Aperture library is moved or copied via Finder rather than using the Import/Export function with the Aperture itself. Since that is accurate for my situation, I'm assuming it's true.
In order to merge libraries that were once the same, first create a new library for each existing library. To do this go to File/Switch to Library/Other/New. Choose "Create New" in the dialog box, select a volume to place the new library, give it a name unique for that library, and hit "Create." In the new library, go to File/Import/Library/Project and select a library that you want to eventually want to merge. Import this library. You'll need to do this for every library you want to merge. Once all of the libraries have been imported into new libraries (think of this as just a laborious way of simply renaming the files), then you should be able to merge the libraries together. Be aware you that must create new libraries for all libraries you want to merge. Just creating one new library and attempting to merge the contents with another won't work. In my case, Aperture went through the "process" of merging, very quickly, but none of the files of the second library actually merged into the first - and no error message will appear.
