Merging 2 partions in OS9.2.2. Can I do it from OS9 disk?

Hi there,
I'd like to merge 2 partitions into 1. I believe I have to boot up from the installation disk. Can I do it from the old OS9 disk - even though my OS is 9.2.2?
Also, can anyone point me to a document or page which will explain how to merge those partitions? I presume I'll need to backup the few files that are the machine first.
Also, seeing as I use it for word processing and don't have any email or anything else on it really can i delete that 'previous OS' folder which is taking up loads of space since I upgraded to 9.2.2?
Thanks for reading!
John

If you have a retail OS 9 disc, it doesn't contain any of "the standard apps" except Apple's proprietary utilities (Drive Setup, Disk First Aid, etc.) and maybe IE and Netscape. Word definitely isn't on it. If your disc was originally shipped with your Mac, it may have some other apps on it, notably Appleworks, depending upon which mac model it was shipped with.
If you don't have your Word installer disc, I guess you're going to find out whether or not copying Word to a backup disc and then copying it back again gives you a usable copy. It may, but how often has anyone outside of Redmond ever used the words "Microsoft" and "convenient" in the same sentence?
In general, you should assume that whatever apps you have now won't be on your OS 9 installer disc, and that you should be prepared to reinstall them from their original source discs if necessary. But do back them all up, because at least some of them will undoubtedly work fine when backed up and then restored. Others may require you to re-enter a serial number after restoring, but will then be usable. Make sure you have all your software serial/registration/activation key numbers written down before erasing your drive.

  • Firefox won't insall into my applications folder. Says can't install because libsmime3.dylib is in use. I am running Mac Os 10.6.7 on a Macbook Pro. I can run firefox okay from the disk image but just won't install into the apps folder.

My system is a Macbook Pro running Mac Os 10.6.7 with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 duo processor with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 ram. The upgrade downloads fine, but when I try to drag the firefox image onto my appication folder, I get a dialogue box that says...Cannot install application because "libsmime3.dylib" is in use. I can run Firefox fine from the disk image.

Nope---didn't work. I've owned Macs for about 12 years so although I am brain dead on some things, I do have a working knowledge on most things. I only say that to say this--I did try holding down the mouse and choosing empty trash. It asks if I want to permanently delete what's in there. I say yes--and then I get the same identical message again-----'The operation can't be completed because the item "Firefox 8.0.1.dmg" is in use I can then click stop, or continue.' So apparently that complains the same way it does if I click it up on the menu :)))
As for item owned by---that's not an issue and isn't coming up. User is not a problem either as I am the only user on this system. There is only ONE file in my trash at the moment at that is this dmg file. Nothing Mac. Nothing owned by anyone other than Firefox. The problem seems to be that the dmg file and the original 4.0 FF file are working in tandem with each other--even though I have already drug the new 8.0 globe into the Apps folder and it updated the FF app with the new stuff. If I could force the dmg file to go away, I would do so, but at every turn the system is telling me it can't be done because it seems to think that dmg file is in use---even though everything is shut down and/or ejected. Hey--I'm getting ready to head out and won't be back till evening. I'll check back in this evening. Thank you again for your help.

  • Can't start up from Install disk

    I'm using a MacBook purchased 3/07. System 10.4.11
I can't start up from the Install Disk for Leopard. I only get a screen with the apple logo and the spinning thing. I wait 10 minutes. Nothing happens. I've tried both using the Disk for the start up and clicking on Install icons but when it shuts down to restart....nothing.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks. Lois

    Hi Josef,
I left it on for over an hour and nothing happened. Finally called Apple and after an hour and a half of all kinds of testing, restarts, zapping and I don't know what else, the nice man there talked to his supervisor and then had me test the hardware (hold down D when starting). Turns out there is a problem with my ram so now I have to take it to a local technician and if he can't fix it, it'll have to go back to Apple for repairs. Ho hum. I just hope it finally gets working to make all this worthwhile.
Thanks again for your interest and help.

  • How I can open my project from usb disk?

I copy my project from hard disk to usb disk because I have just 128 Gb on my HDD. Now I would like to open and change few details in my project and I can't find a way to open it. Could you please help me?

What exactly did you copy? You could do this from inside FCP. If you do it in the Finder the whole project folder has be be moved into a folder called Final Cut Projects at the root level of the external drive.

  • TiG4 can't clean install from origianl disks -WEIRD

My TiG4 came with 10.2 and I've operated with 10.2.8 since the update. Recent problems cause me to require a reinstall of the 10.2 system; however, the installer disk will not allow an install on the current boot volume.
My first thought it was the 10.2.8 update. But as I said, in the past I did not have this problem (reinstall 10.2 and then re-update to 10.2.8). I'm thinking AutoUpdate has installed some software blocking the old install disk from recognizing the current 10.2.8 system.
My only immediate option is to use DiskUtility and erase the disk. I don't want to loose all my information and so this is a very troublesome solution.
Is there a way to route through the system to eliminate any possible newer updates that could be confusing the 10.2 Install disk? Any ideas on what else could be happening?

    Hello Again Chris,
    Have you run Repair Disk?
THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, on the Menubar at the top of the screen, choose Disk Utility from the Installer contextual menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.Repeat steps 5 & 6, but select the Hard Drive this time. It's usually the first listed with the manufacturer's model number. Make note of the S.M.A.R.T. status.
8.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
9.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
10.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
11.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.

  • Can't Start Up From Hard Disk

I just purchased a 256 GB Fantom Hard Disk (Firewire) and it seems to work fine except that I can't boot from it. Should I be able to use an external hard disk for startup with my "vintage" computer? Thanks much for your comments!

    Sierra Guy...
From what I gather your FantomHD should be bootable, so I would contact their website below and touch base with their Technical Support Department. It is unfortunate so much information is missing here to be of any help. (Model, bridge information, and so on)
    http://www.fantomdrives.com/index.htm
BTW... SMART - status (outside link) is a built in HD diagnostic tool. At this point I do not think that applies here or has anything to do with your issues with bootability.

You lost me on your usage of that word / term - "smart". Care to expand on your definition?

  • How can a I copy from my disk a photo and paste it into a New -email I want to create?

I get a lot of e-mails with pictures or other graphics embedded in the e-mail but I can't seem to be able to insert my photographs or any other graphic information into new e-mails I want to create. How do I do this?

Firefox doesn't do email, it's a web browser.
If you are using Firefox to access your mail, you are using "web-mail". You need to seek support from your service provider or a forum for that service.

  • Can't Copy Folders from AirPort Disk in Windows

I know this is posted elsewhere, with no answers, but I wanted to get more information in the subject line than the other posts in the hope that someone will help resolve this issue quickly.
I have attached a FAT32 formatted external USB HD to my new AirPort Extreme. My macBook pro sees it fine and can copy files, folders, ect. to and form the drive.
My Windows Vista machine, however, can see the drive but can only copy individual files from it. If I try to copy an entire folder from the external HD to my machine it acts like it is going to copy it but hangs forever on the "Calculating remaining time" window.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, for me it only happens when moving files from the AEBS HD. I move folders and files all the time from my Vista machine to both another desktop with XP and to a laptop with XP as well as to my MacBook Pro and have never encountered this problem. So, I can only assumer, at least in my case, that is is, in fact, related to the AEBS HD.

  • Adminstator password fails, can't start up from the Disk, etc.

I can not update any software or even make use of disk utilities. My password isn't accepted, even after starting in the safe mode and changing the password. My Administrator name doesn't appear as well. There is no start up ping. This all happened 5 days ago when I went to update the operating system. I have only been able to reboot from the startup disk once. The computer won't let me start up this way again.
    Any ideas would be helpful.
I have removed all documents that must be saved onto an external hard drive. But, I can't even load a new system. I have tried various versions with no luck.

    Thank you for your assistance.
I have tried this except for the last two steps. I left the start up disk stay in the computer and let it start up without holding down the "c" key. Ever since then I don't get the start up ping.
My son things there might be something wrong with the BIOS, but that is just more computer words to me.
I'm wondering if buying a new hard drive and loading the system in might be the easier and less frustrating way to go. I've also thought about loading the operating system on an external hard drive and start up with that hard drive to see what takes place.
    Again, thanks for your assistance.

  • Lost Admin rights, can't change PW from install disk

I just installed the update to 10.4.11 and my main user lost it's admin status. It was the only admin I had set up.
I've found several articles including this one:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=ServerAdmin/10.4/en/c8od36.html
which seem to address my problem. It seems like changing the Root Admin's password would fix everything however when I boot up from the install disk and click on change password I'm then supposed to click on my HD icon but can't because it's greyed out.
It seems to be that my computer doesn't recognize any users, not even the System Admin (root). The only thing I can imagine (in my very small amount of mac knowledge) is that the there are no users listed in the admin users group in the computer.
Any ideas at all that might help me fix this without having to reinstall everything would be so greatly appreciated!!
    Beth

Hi Beth, and a warm welcome!
I think you may have some corruption...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

  • Can't boot Classic from installation disk/stuck in Assistant loop

I have a Mac G4 on which I recently (and foolishly) decided to install the OX 10.0.4. The computer now is stuck in a loop in which it goes to Assistants (there are none to specify) and refuses to let me do anything else, including Force Quit, logout, or even shut down the machine without pressing the power button. I have even unplugged it and let it sit for a couple of hours with no effect. It will not boot from the installation disk of 9.2 by holding C at startup. I held down Ctrl and C at startup and arrived at a cursor and black screen, but I don't know what to do with that other than type exit and allow the computer to continue startup and its infernal loop sequence.
I have a G5 on which I'm running 10.4, so all I want to do is return to my happy world of the Classic environment on my G4. Any assistance will be helpful.

    jeffripple,
    1. About getting out of the Setup Assistant:
    • Will the Command + Period keys stop the Setup Assistant? (This is from OS 9. On some machines, that key combination will open or close the tray.)
    • Is there a Quit option under the File Menu at the top of the screen?
    • Is there an Assistants item in the Menu bar at the top of the screen?
    2. About getting the machine to boot from a CD:
    • What happens if you press Option - Command - Shift - Delete during startup to bypass primary startup volume and seek a different startup volume (such as a CD or external disk)?
See: Mac OS X keyboard shortcuts
    • Have you tried the steps in this link to see if it clearing the parameter RAM allows you to start up from an Operating System install CD which is capable of booting your machine?

  • Can PPC G5 boot from Intel disk copy (or vice versa)?

I'm aware that at the moment one cannot boot a PPC Mac from an Intel system drive, although I think I read somewhere that under Leopard this would change and that a PPC Mac would be able to boot from and Intel system and vice versa. My question is, will this be the same for Leopard Server?
I have a G5 server and would like to add a second (Intel) server to the rack and mirror two drives on the G5 together with a third on the Intel server so that if the G5 server fails, we could immediately boot up on the Intel server using the up-to-date mirrored drive already installed. Does anyone know if this will be possible with Leopard Server?
    Thanks,
    Keith

10.4.7 and newer (there is at least 10.4.8 too) is available as UB for both Intel and PPC.
Running a second Xserve as a fireWire targetmode machine/drive might be possible but doing it for long perods of time can't be good as at least the fans will run at top speed all the time.
Moving a boot drive from one machine to another should also present problem because the partition info on the drives must be different (?) : Apple Partition Map (PPC) vs GUID (Intel).
I can't tell you if it is possible to have one drive configured so you can boot both PPC and Intel machines from the same partition (the DVD can be booted on both of course).

  • Can't drag files from a DVD I burned

I transfer files off of my hard drive to conserve space from time to time. After burning the files to a DVD I am now unable to drag the files off the disk and transfer them back to my hard drive. I can only read them from the disk. What am I doing wrong?

Still need more information. What happens when you try to drag a file from your DVD to your Desktop? Does an error dialog pop up? If so what does it say? What happens if you use the cp command in Terminal ( +cp <path to file on DVD> ~/Desktop+ ). Does that succeed or fail? If it fails, what error message do you get?
