Merging catalogues in Lightroom 5

Does anyone know how to properly merge our old Lightroom 4 catalogue to the new Lightroom 5 catalogue which is automatically created?

There is no way to do this automatically (only Lightroom has that merge function).
This is the biggest reason why it is recommended to have a single catalog.

You merely open your LR3 catalog(s) in LR4 and LR4 will make a copy and convert it to LR4 format. After that LR3 can no longer see the changes that are made for LR4 and vice-versa because they are separate catalogs.
If you have several current catalogs then you’ll need to do this which each one. Name the new catalog something that makes sense for LR4 so you can keep straight which is which.

LR3 ... How to merge catalogues for LR2 and LR3beta

OK I have just installed LR3 from a disc and took the option to update my old LR2 catalogue on set up.
However, I now have some recent shoot folders that I have only worked on in LR3beta (beta 1 or 2).
If I look in MyPhotos/Lightroom folder I have four Lightroom Catalogues listed as follows:
Lightroom 2 Cartalog.lrcat     444MB
Lightroom 3 Cartalog.lrcat       15MB
Lightroom 3 Cartalog.2.lrcat     87MB
Lightroom 3 Cartalog.3.lrcat   421MB
So I think the last one is the new converted catalogue converted from the first one
The 2nd one looks like my LR3 beta 1 catalogue..
and the third one looks like my LR3 beta 2 catalogue
Ideally I'd like to merge the last three catalogues adding some of the more recent shoot folders worked on in LR3 beta 2
How do I do this and how will the process resolve issues if I have worked on the same image in more than one version...add the LR3 beta 2 catalogue of LR with corrections now stored in more than one catalogue to

Ideally, I'd like them to offer a folder/shoot based OR an image by image decision process, to say I want to choose the LR2 or the LR3 beta treamtent OR perhaps ideally BOTH, labelled LR2 and LR3. That would be ideal - then one could simply compare side by side and go for the best solution. Just a thought.....something several beta users must be coping with. I have been with LR since the first beta...so should know better but am not totally computer savvy ( old dogs and new tricks unfortunately )

Error importing Elements 8 (PSE8) catalogue in Lightroom 3 (LR3)

(using windows XP with SP2, on a mac running VMware; hence all the adobe software is running in the windows operating system)
I previously owned Adobe photoshop album 2.0. Photos organised in collections, tagged and many photos have captions.
I have tried to the upgrade path to LR3.
I used a trial version of Photoshop elements 5 (PSE5). I managed to sucessfuly import the PSA 2 catalogue, fully preserved.
I used a trial version of Photoshop elements 8 (PSE8) and also managed to sucessfuly import the PSA 5 catalogue, and also fully preserved.
I bought the student edition of Lightroom 3 (LR3). on opening it, I try then to convert the PSE8 catalogy. It seems to start the process and the progress bar gradually fills to about half way before it stops. The message displays: "Lightroom encountered problems when trying to upgrade photoshop elements
> catalog and cannot complete the operation"
I tried several times, and always the same.
Has anyone else had this problem or have an answer?

I wanted you to know that it worked. It imported/upgraded the elements
8 catalog seamlessly.
I have basically managed to uprgade all the way from adobe photoshop
album 2.0 to Lightroom 3.2 by first upgrading to Elements 5, then
Elements 8. Everything seems to be intact (ie collections, tags etc)
PS I now have Elements 3.2 on windows xp and want to merge that
converted catalog with the new one for Light room 3 on my mac. I
presume I must first upgrade to LR3.2 on the mac. But how do I then
merge the windows XP version (which has 10,000 plus photos) with my
recently installed Mac one (which has 1000 plus photos)?

Merging catalogues which have the same photos

I have multiple edits and collections of the same photos.... the problem is they are in different calalogues. I find myself in this situation because I mistakenly opened and worked within backup catalogues. I'm now wanting to, a) merge all my catalogues under a single master catalogue, b) preserve the edits and cataloges I've created, c) not create a mess of duplicate photos in the new master catalogue. Thanks.

By doing so the catalog's image settings, into which you import, would win. Or the first you imported in case you start with a clean one.
If you would choose 'replace', the latest catalog, from which you import would win.
If you choose "make a virtual copy" you would have as many versions as you have created in different catalogs. It is no duplicate image, just a variant develop version. Would that really be such a mess? If you did not touch an image when you worked in a backup catalog, the metadata would not be different, hence no virtual copy.
You could visually check which virtual copies you like best: select master image and all its virtual copies, then go into survey mode (N) and flag your superfluous ones as reject (click and hit X).
If a virtual copy has the correct settings, you can promote it to master using Photo menu > Set Copy as Master, and then remove the virtual copy.
Back in grid mode you go for menu Photo-Delete rejected photos, which will ask you to remove x virtual copies, to confirm.
Victoria Bampton actually devotes one parapgraph in her "The missing FAQs to Lightroom" (http://www.lightroomqueen.com/books/adobe-lightroom-4-missing-faq/) to your situation in detail (page 285-289).

Why wont Photoshop Elements 11 merge photos from Lightroom 4?

I'm having problems with automatically merging photos in Photoshop Elements 11 from Lightroom 4. I do my editing in LR4 and when I wish to merge photos (either into a pnaorama or HDR image) all that happens is that PSE11 opens, nothing else. I go through the 'Edit in..' option and click on the desirep option. I can send individual images to edit in PSE11 bun not merge.
I am running windows 8. I have set the external editing software to PSE11. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all the software. But still I'm having no luck with the programs working together and doing what I ask of them. Why is this?

Yes you can open multiple images into PSE from LR. But actually there is no great advantage in using Lightroom for Photomerge as the export copies are already created in the Library but the saved copy will be the merged version which LR will know nothing about, and which would need to be imported to the library separately.
I would personally start from Expert Mode in PSE11 and then use:
File >> Open
Navigate directly to the folder and select the images you want and click open.
If they are raw files they will open up in camera raw and will already have the light room adjustments included, if the metadata has been saved to file in Lightroom.
Click select all (top left) and then ensure the image depth is set to 8 bits using the drop down menu at the bottom of the dialog. Then click the open images button (bottom right) to send them all into PSE.

Merging 360s in lightroom CC

has anyone successfully merged a 360 for an interiorI'm struggling with a series of photos of interiors/rooms, I'm finding that the walls with a low amount of detail being placed in the wrong location. Can we adjust where the photos are being merged before the final 360 is created?

Which file format do you saving your 32bit HDR image?
From LR 4.1, Lightroom can read 32-bit floating-point images in TIFF and DNG file formats.

Merging folders in Lightroom - Help please

I'm a wedding photographer who just switched to MAC. I have three separate folders (one is mine and 2 that I got from dropbox from my second shooter) I had incorrectly imported them into lightroom as three separate folders. I put them all into the same folder in my finder (4,000 images omg) and now I'm trying to re import them into LR so they will be in one catalogue that I can edit from. It's saying they are already imported and only imported 800 images into my new folder...can anyone help I'm pulling my hair out over here and lost all the edits I did from my first import. Feeling frustrated...Kelly

Ah yes, playing hide and seek with Lightroom by moving files in the Finder. A common problem but not a major issue for you.
Lightroom has a record of the images in the catalog it just doesnt know where they are since you moved them.
You should see an ! on each of the thumbnails that are technically "missing". Click on it and you will be asked to locate the file. Follow the steps to find the file in the Finder.
Be sure that the Find Nearby Missing Photos button is checked.
Lightroom will find all the missing images.
No need to re import.

Prefered way to merge catalogues?

Hi all, I regularly travel for a long time as an underwater photographer and would like to create a LR catalogue of all images taken during the trip. I can then make minor adjustments and keywording during the trip, and when I come home Id like to merge this into my main catalogue.
What is the best way to do this? Copy the main catalogue to my travel HD and basically just add to it? Or can I really merge 2 seperate catalogues into 1?

Export a catologue of the new stuff on the Travel one and Import it on your main Catalog.

Lightroom 5 catalogue in lightroom 4

Hello,
Here's the deal. I had been using the trial version of Lightroom 5, thinking that I would be able to upgrade after the first 30 days. I have used Lightroom for years with school, and I wanted it for myself.
Financially, however, this was not possible. I spoke to my family, and they found a copy of Lightroom 4. I have about 2,000 pictures in Lightroom 5 right now, and I need to get them into 4.
There is one big problem with all of this- exporting the photos to a separate location is not possible. There isn't enough space on this computer or any of my jump drives to make it happen. I can't have a duplicate of all of the pictures around on my computer, and I know how specific Lightroom can be about the original file locations. What I really need is a way to transfer the LR5 catalog into LR4.

If you can't export the photos, you could write the edits and metadata to the files (or sidecar files in the case of RAW) and then import into LR4 (assuming you have enough space for that)

Been using Lightroom 5.6 for weeks, no issues. Went to open a catalogue today, it would not open... message assertion failure. Followed Adobe's posted fix... still cannot open catalogue or Lightroom at all. Running Windows 7. Help!

I have gone through Adobe's posted fix for this, the Pictures folder is linked to My Pictures folder. Still no luck, in fact Light room will not open at all. I get the name of the catalog, I tried to open earlier, across my screen and the message "assertion failure". I am running Windows 7. Does anyone know of a fix for this??

Trouble merging exposures from Lightroom 5 into Photoshop CC HDR Pro

I'm a new member to Photoshop CC and I'm trying to merge 3 exposures into Photoshop CC HDR Pro. When the exposures move over to the initial adjustments window, there is a large white line running vertically through the image. I'm missing about 40% of the image. This makes it difficult to accurately adjust the HDR. However, when I accept my adjustments and go to the main Photoshop workspace, the entire image is once again available to make subsequent adjustments or add layers.
I work on a 15" MacBook Pro w/ Retina and I'm running OSX Mavericks (if any of that matters).

I am also having this issue with the "Merge to HDR Pro" function in both LR5.2 and PSCC. When the image is viewed at 50% image size in the HDR app everything appears fine. However, once you start to zoom in the image begins to crop out segements starting on the right hand side. See the screen shots below:

Yes, this is to prevent confusion when the merge result falls outside of the active filter and is thus hidden from the user. Sometimes it will, sometimes it won't - so we chose consistency of behavior.
You should be able to prevent this by clicking the padlock icon in the upper right of the grid view and filter area. This will lock the filter.
