Merging child projects RH9

I'm so confused right now that I don't want to look to see if there's an open topic because just one more piece of extraneous information will tank me.
I have studied the topic at http://www.grainge.org/pages/authoring/merging_webhelp/merging_method_rh8.htm, but I couldn't make it work and the words are swimming.
I used to do this on RH6 without even thinking two years ago, but I can't remember how I did it. What I remember is being told that all projects had to live on the C:\ drive, and publish to the server. You could not keep the project on the server and generate it there without experiencing problems (I don't recall what those were because I always obediently kept my projects on C:\).
So I began with setting Output to C:\Robohelp\Parent\!SSL!\WebHelp\_START_Parent.htm. I published it to F:\Policies\Published\ where it dumped the files at the root. I also tried creating "Parent" directories and publishing to F:\Policies\Published\Parent\_START_Parent.htm.I've tried other things as well, but if I'd love to know the correct path before moving on to the child project, since nothing worked. Has it changed? Do you maintain the projects on the server now?
I tried to recreate the nested hierachy suggested in the topic:
Parent
Project
     Child_1
     Child_2
But I'm not sure if that hierachy is for the Output path or the Published path because nothing seemed to work. That's my first question. Are we building that structure on the C:\ Drive (Output) or on the F:\ (Published Destination), or both?
So I set up the child project as C:\Robohelp\Project\Child1\!SSL!\WebHelp\_START_Child1.htm, and compiled. I published it to
F:\Policies\Published\
F:\Policies\Published\Projects
F:\Policies\Published\Child1
F:\Policies\Published\mergedProjects
F:\Policies\Published\Parent\
F:\Policies\Published\Parent\\!SSL!\WebHelp\mergedProjects
I changed the link on the "merged" icon many, many times. Nothing worked. I don't know which paths are incorrect, in what combination, or if they all are.
--- Has the source directory requirement changed? Do you maintain the projects on the server now?
--- Are we building that structure on the C:\ Drive (Output) or on the F:\ (Published Destination), or both?
--- How do you set up the Merge link?
Please point me in the right direction. Thank you!

I should mention that Figure 5 in that topic shows the Merged Project dialog floating over the Project Manager pod, suggesting that I go there, instead of into the TOC, to insert the merged project. However, my Merge Project icon is grayed out when I'm in Project Manager. I can only insert it from the TOC. So I'm thrown off by the steps in the instructions. Totally lost here.

    Generating RoboHelp HTML Help (.chm)
    Issue
I had the following Help projects:
    1. CombinedProductHelp.chm (parent
    project)
    2. ProductHelp.chm (child 1 project)
    3. ProductBestPracticesHelp.chm (child 2 project)
The parent project is a very small Help project that is used
as a place in which to merge the two child projects. I was able to
add the two child projects to the parent project’s TOC in the
RoboHelp HTML TOC editor, seemingly without any problem. The
problem arose when I generated the .chm output for the merged
projects; upon opening the parent project’s .chm file, I
discovered that the Child 1 project’s TOC wasn’t
appearing in the TOC. The Child 2 project’s TOC appeared just
fine. I was able to retrieve topics from the Child 1 project using
the Search function and index – I just couldn’t use the
    TOC.
After a bit of trial and error, I discovered that the problem
was the result of the file names I had chosen for the Parent
project (CombinedProductHelp.chm) and the Child 1 project
(ProductHelp.chm). For some unknown reason, if the ENTIRE file name
that’s used for a child project is identical to a PART of
file name that’s used for a parent project, the child
project’s TOC will not appear in the merged TOC. I've used
underscores to "right-justify" the problematic file name to more
    clearly illustrate this:
    CombinedProductHelp.chm
    ________ProductHelp.chm
    Resolution
You can resolve the issue by renaming either file. Any ONE of
the following examples will resolve the issue:
    * Insert a letter (other than
    “d”) in front of “ProductHelp.chm” (e.g.,
    SProductHelp.chm)
    * Insert a letter between “p” and “.”
    of “ProductHelp.chm” (e.g., ProductHelpS.chm)
    * Insert a letter in the “ProductHelp” portion of
    “CombinedProductHelp.chm” (e.g.,
    CombinedProducXtHelp.chm)
In the example above, renaming the
    “CombinedProductHelp.chm” to
“CombinedHelp.chm” resolved the issue; both child
project TOCs now appear in the parent .chm TOC.

    Tracey,
Safari might need some of the patches that make WebHelp
behave better (to some extent, anyway) in Netscape, Firefox and
    Opera for Windows.
Let's try to pinpoint the problem.
WebHelp generally loads in this order:
    --Frame outline
--Main toolbar plain background, then buttons, then the image
    background, if any.
    --The welcome topic
--The minibar at left-- empty frame, then background and
icons, if any (browse, synch TOC and hide X)
    --Table of contents background
    --TOC list.
How far does the Mac browser get when you first launch
    WebHelp?
If the main topic loads, and it has links to other topics. do
    they work?
Can you get the Index and search to work?
Can you hide the left pane and click Contents to show it?
    Still empty?

  • Why don't I see the "Show Merged TOC in Child Project" setting?

I have read about the "Show Merged TOC in Child Project" setting in RoboHelp 8 and have seen a screen shot of the build properties page where that check box is. But, when I go to build WebHelp, I don't see the same window. A number of the settings are different, and there is no "Show Merged TOC in Child Project" setting. I am using RoboHelp 8 (version 8.0.2.208 to be exact). I have pasted in a screen shot of the window that I see.
The first screen I see when I build WebHelp looks the same as the screen shot in Peter Grainge's article on Merged Help. The screen above is the second one I see.
    Can anyone help? I'm mystified!

    Hi there
Looks like you experimented with enabling Section 508. When you do that and toggle it back off, you are left with the Traditional style - no skin WebHelp. So back up a screen and choose a skin. Then you will see the option.

  • Why does RoboHelp 8 crash when compiling merged HTML help after deleting a child project in TOC

Why does RoboHelp 8 crash when compiling merged HTML help after deleting a child project in TOC? I would be grateful for any assistance.
    Here's the situation:
-- I recently upgraded from RoboHelp X5 to RoboHelp 8. I upgraded my projects to RoboHelp 8 projects.
-- One large help system I manage is built such that there is one master project and about 25 child projects. Each of these is its own item in the master project TOC.
-- In RoboHelp X5 I never had any trouble deleting these.
-- However now in RoboHelp 8, whenever I delete one (by opening TOC pod, right-clicking on item in question, and clicking Delete), and proceed to "Generate Primary Layout" (MS HTML Help), the generation/compilation process proceeds as far as "Generating full-text search data" and then the whole program crashes!
Am I doing something wrong? Is there a bug in the software? I have installed patches 8.0.1 and 8.0.2.
Once again, I thank you in advance for any pointers.

  • RH8 Merged project child project displaying in a separate window

    Hi Everyone,
Today I created a brand new merged project in RH8 using webhelp format. Both the parent and child projects were created from scratch.
When I displayed the finished merged project and clicked on the child project in the help TOC the child project displayed in a separate window!!
    Please can someone advise ...
How do I configure this so the child project displays in the same window as the parent?

    Peter,
    Many thanks for your suggestions.
I tested the sample project again, it was actually from one of our customers whose browser security settings are fixed. The problem was caused by IE7 internet browser security settings. Once blocked content was permitted everthing displayed in the same window.
This is a relief as all other settings were what I normally used and these always worked.

  • Robohelp 8: Child Project topics not displaying in the topic pane

    Hi All:
I am working on a Robohelp 8 merged help with four child projects. The child project I added last (which appears as Child 2 on the ToC) displays fine in the ToC pane. However, none of the Child 2 topics display in the Topics pane.
When I investigated, I found that Child 2 had a few broken links. I fixed them but this has made no difference.
I have cleared the MergedHelp folder and recompiled a few times, but w/o any change. Child 1, 3 and 4 topics display in the topics pane, but not Child 2 topics.
    Would appreciate any pointers.
    Regards,
    Sophie

Try deleting the child from the TOC and readding it. If that does not work, can you post an image of what you are seeing. You can do so via the camera toolbar icon.

  • Merged CHMs in RH9 not appearing as merged

I upgraded RoboHelp 8 projects to RoboHelp 9. I have 6 different projects that I compile as CHMs and they are all merged to appear as one CHM to the end user. In the RoboHelp 8 generated CHMs, when I would click on one of the child projects, it would appear as part of the merged help. In RoboHelp 9 generated CHMs, when I click on one of the child projects (any one of the child projects), it opens up the child CHM in a separate pop-up.
All of the names of the 6 CHMs are one word (no spaces and no underscores).
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

    Hi there
I'm not sure I follow here. Do EACH of the CHMs involved have references to all the others? Normally you only have the master or parent with the TOC configured to look at and include child links. But each of the child CHM files has a basic TOC and really knows nothing about the others unless the parent is opened and it finds the children.
Sorry, but the behavior you are describing seems perfectly normal to me and the behavior you cite with version 8 seems abnormal.

  • Search and index for child projects

Hello I have a merged RoboHelp 9 project.  Is there a way I can setup the project so that when the user does a search, the child projects are searched as well as the master?  Is there a way that I can used the Smart Index Wizard from the master project to produce an index which includes the child projects as well as the master.  Thank you for any help you can provide.

    Welcome to our community, Steven
Sorry for slowness, forums seem hit or miss today.
What you are describing is exactly how a merge should operate. All projects that are part of the merge should be properly searched and an Index would work across all projects. Because of this, I'm struggling to see a need to index everything from only the Master.
As you likely already know, the Smart Index Wizard simply scans topics and auto-maps them to keywords in whatever project you have open.
Sorry, but there is no way I'm aware of for the Smart Index Wizard to be used from the Master and coax it to index child projects. It's an interesting thing to consider and I would heartily encourage you to submit a Wish Form to ask for this functionality to appear in a future release. You do this using the Wish Form. (link to the Wish Form is in my sig)

  • Search and index across child projects seem inconsistent.

    Hi
I created a new Master project and added a child project using RoboHelp 9 HTML to created a Microsoft HTML file.  When I open the Master's chm file, I can view the index for the complete project (master and child) as well as do a search across the entire project.    Then I added another child project (after creating an index in the child) and rebuilt my master.  New when I view the new master chm file, the index does not include second child, although it does included the first child, and the search does not search the second child.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much Amebr.  Your answer was right on the mark.  I think I discovered how the path was hard-coded.  I will describe what happened in case anyone else has a similar situation.
Below  is a copy of the "MERGE FILES" section of my master project's HPP file.  I removed the "!SSL!\Microsoft_HTML_Help\" from "!SSL!\Microsoft_HTML_Help\FOCUS_Utility.chm".  But when I regenerated the master project, the path ("!SSL!\Microsoft_HTML_Help\") was re-added to the file name and the problem persisted.
The difference between " Weight_Module.chm" "Deckhouse_Module.chm" and the other merged files is that I imported them for outside of the folder containing the master project's files.   With the other files I coped them to the "!SSL!\Microsoft_HTML_Help\" of the master project before I merged them in the TOC of the master.  To fix the problem I had to:
remove the projects from the mater's TOC
Remove the line in the "[MERGE FILES]" section of the master project's .hhp file
copy the merged files' chm to a folder outside of the master's folder.
Remerge the merged ( or child) project in to the TOC of the master project and let RoboHelp copy the merged chm file into the masters "!SSL!\Microsoft_HTML_Help\" folder.
    Regenerated the master project.

  • Merging FlashHelp Projects TOC Issue

I was delighted to discover this morning that I can now merge
    FlashHelp projects!
I am running into an issue with my TOC, though. It won't
display. I've made sure my child projects have working TOCs, and
they do. But the parent TOC is being stubborn. The Contents section
is there - but nothing is listed.
Also, after reading through the help files with RH, they
suggested publishing the projects to a central location - which I
did try but it didn't work. Is this supposed to be for WebHelp or
do I need to do this for FlashHelp, too?
This is my first time trying this, so I'm probably doing
something wrong - maybe one of you pro's can help?
    Thanks!
    Crystal

    Hi Crystal
So are you running FlashHelp Pro ouptut and publishing to the
RoboEngine? If not, I don't believe you are able to merge FlashHelp
generically as you can with regular WebHelp.
    Cheers... Rick

  • TOC doesn't synchronize in merged HTMLHelp project

This issue had been discussed several times. Peter Grainge offered a solution for WebHelp projects. Though I'm still looking for a solution on HTML Help projects with CHM output format.
    Situation:
As the help file growed tremendously over time we'd like to split our MS HTML Help project in several sources resulting in a couple of *.chm files. Those refer to modules of our application suite. We successfully generated the help files and merged them using one clasping 'parent help file' based on the merge functionality of the TOC (table of contents) dialog. We use RH 7 in a Windows XP environment, language is German.
    Problem
When the application calls a specific help topic from a child help file that had been meregd into a parent help file, then the TOC (left pane) doesn't synchronise / synchronize with the content of the right pane.
    Example
Calling a specific topic from Visual Basic .NET code:
    Help.ShowHelp(Me, "C:\DEVELOP\myApp\help\myAppHelp.chm", "Basics.chm::/CommonDialogs/Print_Dialog.htm")
As expected myAppHelp opens, in the right pane the correct topic "Print_Dialog" is presented, but the TOC on the left pane is not being expanded to this level. Expanding the TOC manually shows that all topics from the child help files are available.
    Further information
    1. We ensured to tick the related option "Auto-synchronize TOC" from the window dialog and the "Always show Selection" option of the advanced options for the project properties. Things work well, when calling a topic from the parent help file (TOC synchronises perfectly) or when the child help file is being accessed directly from the application.
    2. Based on the release notes for RH8 ...
Merged project enhancements Merged project enhancements introduce the concept of a child project referring to a master TOC. Child projects automatically synchronize with the merged TOC, and you can see the merged TOC in the child projects.
... I asked someone to import my sources in RH8 and generate all output. It still doesn't work.
Any hints on existing or up-coming solutions are highly appreciated. Kind regards,
    Pinkepunk

In Project Manager you should see Table of Contents listed. From what you say, instead of setting up the default TOC, you elected to create a new one. That will be confirmed by you seeing two entries under Table of Contents.
Then probably what happened is instead of setting the wizard to use the new TOC, you left it with the default so you generated using the default instead of the TOC you had created.
Double click the Primary Layout and change the TOC used in the first page to your new one and it should be OK.
If you double click a TOC in Project Manager, you should see it open in a pod.

  • Child projects will not open after new window is created in the master

I am using Robohelp 9 (html) to created a Microsoft html file.  I have a master and child project.  My master projected uses a (WebHelp pro) window and the child uses a (HTML Help) Window.   Topics from the child project to open in the main window instead of a new one when there are selected from the table of contents.  I did the following in the master project:
*Set the "Primary Layout " to Microsoft HTML
*Created a new windowy (Window type "HTML Help" which matches the child project
    *Deleted the original window
*Renamed the new window to "NewWindow" to match the child project.
Now when I open the master chm file, and select topics from the child project, nothing happens, the topic is not opened in either the master window nor a new one.

    Hi,
What happens if you remove the window from the child project. Does it work then?
What happens if you create a new, blank master project and merge the child. Do you see the same behaviour?

    Willam

  • Hyperlinks - Different Projects/Child Projects

    Hi,
    Working in RH HTML X5,
Generating .chm and webhelp - Help.
    1. I was wondering if its possible to link a Hyperlink in a
    Topic from Project A to a Bookmark/Topic in a Project B.
    2. Also in child projects, can we call a Hyperlink from a
Parent project to a child project or vice versa?- Parent and Child
projects are merged - Both .chm and webhelp?
Searched in Peter's site and Rick's site, but I guess was not
looking at the right place so didnt find anything related.
    Please help
    Kewal

    This covers webhelp only.
1] Yes, see the topic on merged webhelp for the method of
    creating cross project links.
2] The whole point of my method is to avoid having content in
the parent project. Please take another look at it.
The way in which cross project links is created is different
when creating CHM help so you will need to create two links, one
for each method, and use conditional tags. My webhelp method is not
designed for use with merged CHM help but I am told it can be used.
Download the demo and experiment with that, it's much easier and
less dangerous than working with your full project.

I just upgraded from RH5 to RH8 to use with a new product my company is developing.  I have quite a large merged help project that I have been editing and reorganizing.  I have a version published and in use but I have an updated version about 75% finished.  I would like to do in RH8.  Is there anything I need to watch for or recommended method to upgrading each child and then the parent?  Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

  • Different Color Text of Topic Titles by Child Project in Search Results List

Does anyone know how I can change the text color to indicate the source project of a topic as displayed in the Search Results list?
I have followed Peter Grainge's directions for setting up a parent project that has several child projects, one of which contains outdated version-specific information. Thanks, Peter!
I would like it to be obvious to the user before they open a topic from the Search Results list that it is from the old legacy project.
I have found where the font is set, (thanks to the RoboWizard), but I am not a Javascript programmer and am uncertain how to code the "if document is from this project, then use this font" logic.
I would also like to put a "caption" below the "Search Results per page" line to explain the purpose of the color change.
I am using RoboHelp HTML 8.0.2. I generate WebHelp output which is then FTP'd to our server.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Leon,
Let me make sure that I understand your suggestion - I should change the title of each topic in the "legacy" knowledge base so that they each include a short identifier, such as "First Topic - Legacy"? If so, I suppose that would work, but I'd have to change 1,000 topics. The topic titles would no longer match the filenames (I'm trying to freeze changes to the old knowledge base to which there are many links from our user forum), which I suppose is not a big concern at this point.  I'll run some tests.
That has also raised another question in my mind, but I'll post that separately. It's about the way Robohelp selects the text that is shown immediately after the title of the topic in the Search Results list.
Thanks for taking the time to help!
