Merging document folders from two macs

Hi, I travel with a macbook air and usually take a copy of my entire "data" folder with me. When I get back to my imac I need to be able to ansfer any new or amended files from the macbook air to my imac. Any suggestions on the most efficient way to do this? Manually takes forever.
Thank you

  • Merging iPhoto Libraries from two Macs

Does anyone have a way of physically combining (not just sharing) iPhoto libraries from two macs? I'm hoping there's an easier, smarter way of doing it than just exporting all of the photos from one and importing them into the other and then just doing the reverse. Is there software that does this smarter? Can get rid of duplicates, etc.?

    Merge?
    Do you mean 'sync' libraries
The general term means when two Libraries (A and B) are compared and files in Library A are copied to Library B, while files in Library B are also copied to Library A so that both Libraries are identical.
This is bi-directional copying and you cannot do this with automatically with iPhoto. No Syncing software is capable of parsing the iPhoto Library in this manner. One or both of your Libraries will be damaged if you try this.
The nearest you can get to syncing is to use iPhoto Library Manager to move files/Albums/Events plus assoicated metadata between Libraries. This process cannot be automated.
The Export/Import route will not get your versions.

  • Mime attachments in Mail from two mac users

I've been receiving mime attachments in Tiger Mail from Ebay and members for a while and I've searched the forum for answers but haven't found a viable solution yet. I end up using TextEdit to open them. I've contacted ebay about this and they have no clue, and think it's spam even though I tell them I get them from Ebay tech support, however they do show up ok in my RCN webmail when I check there.
Anyway that's not the problem now, I was trying to troubleshoot my father's mail problem who is Panther Mail and it mysteriously stopped working for him a couple days ago both sending and receiving. However he is getting them from his webmail at SBC/Yahoo formerly Ameritech. I checked his account settings over the phone and they seemed correct to what he had before but I had him contact his provider.
They don't seem to know what's going on and wanted him to contact Apple.I had him contact them again and they finally did have him change his outgoing mail server from Ameritech to SBC/Yahoo. So he is able to send from there now but not receive emails. ( he still still sends and receives ok at his webmail site) . Since they changed the outgoing mail server however, the email he sends me (all plain text) is coming now as a mime attachment.
I've never seen this before from two Mac users using Mail and plain messages. I had him try changing back to the Ameritech outgoing sever but that still doesn't work. And again if I check my RCN webmail I can view these messages fine in the body of the email there, just not in Mail. Any ideas what may have caused this? Is it because of the Yahoo outgoing mail server? He's about givin up and has resorted to his webmail only for now. I generally like Mail but this is a pia.

    <Where is it designated as a "mime-attachment" & where does the "27bytes" text appear?>
It shows mime-attachment(27bytes) just below the little plain document icon. This shows up both in the body of the email and also the little attachment drop down menu below the To / subject area.
<Also, if you go to Mail's View > Message submenu when one of these messages is open, which (if any) 'alternate' menu choices are available (not grayed out)? >
All are greyed out except Long headers and Raw source.
Here is the header info in the message if that helps any:

If you have facing pages, you have to set up the document with facing pages that is what is it for. If you have a spreadwide design as above, keep the spreads together. There is not even one reason not to do so.
Only for wire-O-bindings might a different workflow useful, but also with facing pages documents and only when the left page and the right page have not a spread wide design:
//// I did one mistake, I created a doument with a right binding, but it would work the same way with left binding.)
    1. Create a document with Facing Pages.
    2. Select the Spread in the Page Panel (Window > Page Panel) and in the panel’s flyout menu deselect "Allow Selected Spread to Shuffle". The spread’s page number will appear in brackets.
    3. Select a single page of the spread and drag it to the side until a vertical bar appears.
    4. Now you have the result.
Left and right pages have their own spread and will have a bleed around each page without taking information from the other page.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your mail folders are actually "on my Mac" then your iOS devices cannot be set up to see them. However, if your mail folders are within your email service account and your email service is an IMAP account, then the folders should sync between devices.

Is there an easy way to merge the iTunes music etc from two computers into one. I want my new laptop to contain all the media that is on it already plus the media on my iMac

  • Sync folders between two Macs

    Howdy,
I want Mail on two of my Macs to be in sync. I have a lot of rules set up and once the rules are applied the mail is sorted in local folders so it disappears from the inbox. This of course causes it to no longer be available on the other Mac.
Looking for an application that can sync files I select between two Macs whenever a change is detected on either of them, in this case my Mail folder and peferences. This can go directly or through an OS X server that's running 24/7. I don't want to move my folders to the mailserver but keep them local.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like to do this. Does this functionality exist in Snow Leopard?
no. not unless you want to use a command line tool like rsync.
If not, are there any 3rd party apps that will solve my problem?
you can use Chronosync or ForkLift. also, you can sync not directly between computers but via a cloud. there are many services that do that. there is apple's own mobileme. another very popular one is DropBox.

  • Moving and Merging iPhoto Libraries From 2008 Macs to 2013 MacBook Pro

I have a late 2008 MacBook and an early 2008 iMac. Both are running Lion and iPhoto '08. I will be getting a new MacBook Pro Retina very shortly to replace my MacBook. I would like to move the iMac's iPhoto library to the new MacBook Pro and merge it with the MacBook's iPhoto library once that library is also on the MacBook Pro.  I obviously need to get all iPhoto libraries up to date prior to doing this. I think I have a plan to achieve this, as follows, but I would appreciate your help:
    1) Upgrade iMac to Mavericks (App store said that I need to do this prior to upgrading to iPhoto 9.5)
    2) Upgrade iMac's iPhoto to 9.5
    3) Use set-up assistant to migrate old MacBook to new MacBook Pro. This should upgrade the old MacBook's iPhoto library to the current iPhoto version on the MacBook Pro???
    4) Move the iMac's iPhoto library to the MacBook Pro (6,604 photos, approximately 27 gb)
    5) Merge the two iPhoto libraries using iPhoto Library Manager or Aperture (I have not decided which one yet)
Is this a plan that will work?
MacBook just has Ethernet and USB.  iMac has USB, Ethernet and FireWire.  MacBook Pro has Thunderbolt and USB.
I already need to buy a Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet adapter to transfer between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro.  I'd rather not have too buy another adapter just to transfer the iPhoto library from the iMac to the MacBook Pro.
Is there a way to do 4) on my wifi network using file sharing or some other method I may not be aware of just to transfer the 27 gb iPhoto library?
    Thank you.

    More simple.
Wait until you get the new machine. Copy the two libraries to the new machine. Open them, this will upgrade them to the same version. Then merge them.
Obviously, don't move them to the same folder, or rename one, so they don't overwrite each other.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
I would strongly caution you that Migration Assistant is not very reliable with iPhoto Libraries.

  • Problems using TimeMachine from two Macs to IOMega Home Media Drive

    Hi,
This has been driving me crazy for a couple of weeks now, so I'm hoping that someone here can point me in the right direction.
I have a PPC G5 and my wife uses an iMac. I recently bought an IOMega Home Media Drive and wanted to use it with TimeMachine. I set up the G5 and got that working, but when I tried to add my wife's iMac I've had nothing but problems.
I tried resetting the IOMega back to factory defaults, deleting and then re-creating the backups folder, using usernames and passwords or a guest account, and nothing seems to work. I occasionally do something that breaks it on the G5 (running 10.5.8) but I have been able, for the most part, to get it working again, but it's never worked from my wife's iMac (running 10.6.2).
I even tried creating the sparsebundles by hand and copying them in which seemed to work on the G5 but not on the iMac. I thought that the problem might be trying to back up two systems to the same share, but I'm not sure how to split them. Is there a way to create separate backup shares on the IOMega (which seems to connect using AFP even though I've seen references to SMB in some of the forums) so that each system would use its own? Is there a general problem when trying to back up two Macs to the same network share?
The error that I tend to get is that the "backup volume is read only". On the iMac the current error I'm getting, after creating the hostname.sparsebundle image (oddly enough when TimeMachine tried creating it yesterday it dropped the MAC address...not sure why), is: "/Volumes/backups-1/hostname.sparsebundle could not be created (error 45)."
Any help would be greatly appreciated, this has been very frustrating.
    Thanks,
    Rob

    Hi,
You don't want to hear this, but Time Machine does not back up to network drives, except Time Capsules or a shared drive on another Mac running Leopard or Snow Leopard on the same local network. It will often back-up to a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme, but even that is, technically, unsupported, and may require running a special Terminal command to make it work.
    Here's the official word: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733
You may find some hardware or "hacks" that might make it work, in some cases, to a degree. But use them at your own risk.
First, since this is *unsupported by Apple,* there's nowhere to go when there's trouble.
Second, you're risking a future update preventing it from working, and perhaps rendering your backups useless.
No guarantees, of course, but this might help: https://iomega-na-en.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/iomegana_en.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=22012&p_created=1246919828&p_sid=KBbtj nNj&p_accessibility=&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PWRmbHQmcF9 ncmlkc29ydD0mcF9yb3dfY250PTEwLDEwJnBfcHJvZHM9MTAzMSwxMDQzJnBfY2F0cz0mcF9wdj0yLjE wNDMmcF9jdj0mcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1hbnN3ZXJzLnNlYXJjaF9ubCZwX3BhZ2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF9 0ZXh0PXRpbWUgbWFjaGluZQ**&p_li=&ptopview=1

  • Working one iWeb site from two Macs

I have two Macs, and use my desktop for working at home, and my laptop for working away, or when on holiday for working with photographs and, hopefully, blogs. I set up my iWeb site initially using the desktop, and then tried to edit the site using my laptop, only to find that it cannot, seemingly, be done.
Help! Does anyone know how to edit one iWeb site from two machines, or is there, perhaps, a practicable workaround?

The answer is Domain.sites (extension hidden by default). You'll find this on your desktop machine at Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/iWeb. Copy that file to removable media and drag it to the same location on your laptop. Launch iWeb and you'll see your desktop site structure in the Site Organizer.
Once you keep the Domain package in sync between the two machines everything will work smoothly no matter which you use. There's a neat tip here which may help in this respect:
