Merging existing start-up disk to a new raid.  How do I do it?

I have a G5 Server with three 68 gig, 15000 rpm hard disks internally and four attached RAIDS, 300 gigs, 1.5TB, 2TB and 2TB. On the three internal hard drives, one is the system disk, one is the mail database and the third was going to be a mirror of the system but I keep running out of space on the system disk even though nothing is stored on it. 20 gigs has been eaten up in the last couple of months.
Anyway, I have plenty of backups so the mirror is less import to me than getting a larger startup drive. So is there a way to migrate the existing server software drive with the extra drive without losing data? Is is better to make a bootable backup and just erase the disks and restore?
I would want to make a simple bootable backup prior to doing this. What do you suggest as the most reliable approach? I am using time machine which is great but I have never restored a system disk before and don't know if it will be glitchy. I am assuming that if I use time machine to restore the server system, I would boot from an install disk. Is that right?

Hi Mark
In my opinion the short answer would be No.
One way to do this is to clone existing boot drive onto an external firewire drive. Back up anything else you might need on the other drive(s) you are going to use in the RAID set to wherever you feel best. Boot from the cloned drive and begin to define your RAID. Presumably its a software RAID Mirror using Disk Utility?
Once you've done that clone back and test. I have used DU and CCC successfully to do exactly what you're proposing. Both worked as expected. As your share points are probably on the externally attached hardware RAIDs I would not bother unsharing any share points you have.
Can't comment on Time Machine as I have never used it for OSX Server. You may well have problems using it to restore from if your Server is also the Mail Server. Possibly Open Directory might also pose a problem? One way to find out is to try it. I would make sure you have at least two fully working bootable backups of the server as it stands prior to the restore before doing this.
One thing you should bear in mind about backups. You can backup all you want but the true test is a restore when disaster strikes. All the backing up in the world is not worth anything if you can't effectively restore. This is something a lot of people forget.
If there are share points defined on the XServe's internal drives it might be best to unshare those first before cloning. You can always re-define them later on. Don't forget to enable ACLs on those volumes if you're using Tiger Server. ACLs on Leopard Server are enabled by default - or should be.
man fsaclctl
For more information.
It works best if both drives are exactly the same make and size. I have seen some (admittedly not often) problems when mixing drive manufacturers. Not all drive makes are exactly the same size as each other. For example an 80GB Samsung might return 76.7GB when formatted whereas a similar sized Hitachi might return 75.4GB.
Hope this helps, Tony

I purchased an Imac in Sept 2009 and pretty much use it for the iphoto and internet. Other than that, we have no movies and a small itunes catalog. My computer has recently started telling us that our start up disk or disk space is running low. I can't imagine that we are anywhere near filling up the internal memory so I am wondering if something else is the culprit.

  • I need help merging an old Mozilla Firefox with a new one, How do I do it?

Can Firefox merge my two Mozilla Firefox accounts?
Between 2010 and 2012 I created to separate Mozilla Firefox accounts. The first was under Teri Muckleroy with the Username savdXGodsgrace and email address (Email removed by mod) that has been changed as of 05/30/2012 to (Email removed by mod) and the second account that I created for my Firefox Personas that is under the name Teri Hinton with the Username CountryGirlsHeartAlways and email address (Email removed by mod) that as of 05/30/2012 has been changed to (Email removed by mod) so what I want to know is could Mozilla Firefox help me merge the two accounts into one. The only info I want to use is,
    Username: CountryGirlsHeartAlways
Email address: (Email removed by mod)
I'd like Mozilla Firefox to send me an email with a link to enter my password or send me a temporary password once the merge of both accounts has been completed or if a merge is not possible a solution that will make it possible for me to merge the two accounts myself.

What do you mean with a Mozilla Firefox account? Note also that a moderator already removed your e-mail details to protect you from getting spam. Please don't post private information in this public forum, for your own safety. Thanks!

  • Imac will not see my hard drive on start up, wants to start from network start up disk that does not exist. How to get rid of it? So there is just one choice / my hard drive.

I have a Intel duo Imac. Everything has been running relatively smoothly for a few years now. All of a sudden my computer will not start. I get the flashing folder with a question mark.
When I go to Start up disk in my system perfernces while the computer is on. I see 2 possible choices. One is my hard drive with the operating system shown. The other is a non-existant Network Start up disk with a question mark in it ( looks like a hard drive with a question mark and it say's its a "network start up disk).
All I think I want to do is get rid of the Network startup with the question mark. I can not find anywhere how one can just remove an old or non existant start up disk without reformatting.
I believe this came from a clients hard drive who had a network system on it. We no longer have that drive. It no longer exists. But a latent icon shows up in start up disk.
When I go to change the start up disk. I can change it to either the hard drive or the network with the question mark. But when I select my hard drive and then got to restart the computer. I get the flashing folder with a question mark on start up. I have also seen the flashing globe a couple times.
When I attempt to run disk utility from may install disk ( holding down "C" on start-up ). Disk utility does not see my hard drive. Just the Apple install disk with the disk utility on it.
What can I do to remedy this short of re-installing? Will a program like Disk Warrior or Tech Tool help?

Thank you. That's what I thought will need to happen.
One more question. I tried using the Apple install disk that came with the computer. It's an OS 10.5.6 disk. It does not see my 10.6.8 system internal hard drive to repair. All it see's is itself 10.5.6 disk. Do you think I can use a 10.8+ disk utillity since that is a higher system it will see the 10.6.8. Where the 10.5.6 does not?
I don't want to turn the computer off for fear I'll get the question mark again. P-Ram got me going last time but for how long I don't know?  It would be nice to be able to turn the computer off for the night and startup as usual to give it a rest and try to reset itself.
Thanks for your help, I know I will eventually need to re-install. But I am in the middle of a project with tight deadlines and all I can do right now is back-up. Trying to migrate to another computer temporarily to finish the job. That's a lot of extra work in the short time also.
Just trying to put a band-aid on it for another couple weeks.

  • Can't find new drive when looking for start up disk

I upgraded to a new SATA HD on my G5. The process that I took was to copy the replaced drive via Super Duper. I moved the copy to my internal back up drive and then swapped out the old drive for a new drive. When I booted up, I did so from the back up drive and had no issues. I then partitioned the new drive and moved the files from the back up drive to the new drive. I then went into prefs to change the start up disk to the new drive - however, it is not showing up. The drive does show up in system profiler and I can navigate through it. However, nothing it is not picked up in start up??? Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Turner100-
If you did not clone the drive onto the new one, then you must install OSX on that drive in order to have it boot the Mac.

  • How do I delete items from start up disk?

My start up disk is almost full.  How do I delete items from it?

Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • MacBook start up disk help needed

What is the start up disk on a MacBook and how do I make space on it?

The startup disk is usually your HDD.
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion's Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.

  • How do I make space on start-up disk

    Hi,
I recently upgraded to Lion X.  Now I keep getting notices that my start-up disk is almost full.  How do I make more space?  I'm afraid of deleting things that are important for my Mac.  Please break it down for me step by step.  This is my first Mac, so I'm not too familiar with this laptop or Lion X.  Thanks.
    Hilda

    Hilda,
Generally, anything in visible folders under your user name in the finder will be documents that you can safely move to an external drive or delete. You should see separate folders for Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Movies, Music, Pictures, etc. None of the files in these folders should be critical to the operation of your mac.
Safest bet is to get an external drive and move things like pictures and movies off of your main drive. These can be especially large files and take up a lot of space. What I do is build a similar group of folders on the external drive, and that makes it easy to keep things organized. Make sure you move the files or copy and then erase as OS X does a copy by default.
Also, check to make sure your trash is empty, and your downloads folder, it can get full of dmg images and other typical downloads, and most of these can be safely erased unless you don't have access to the original source any more. Hope this helps.

  • Restore Files & App's From Damaged Start-Up Disk (10.4) to New Disk (10.5)

I appreciate any help all of you can give me. This is kind of a weird one, so I'll try and be brief. I have a G5 that had problems with a malfunctioning start-up disk. I purchased a new hard drive and went to install 10.4 and found that it was an upgrade disk, not an original install disk. As the computer had a former owner, I originally purchased it and all of its software from him but evidently I only got the 10.4 Upgrade disk from him, not the full install. I have since purchased Leopard and installed it on the new start-up disk. Diskwarrior and Disk Utility will both allow me to open my old disk in a read-only manner, but I'm wondering now if there is an easy way to move all of my app's, files, email's, etc. over to the new disk.
I did partition the disk so that I could make an image and copy over the old disk to the new partitioned volume, but since it would then have a copy of 10.4 on it will this cause issues with my start-up volume running 10.5? Will my app's run alright under Leopard? What about running the files from that disk? Also since I had directory issues, I'm worried that by making an image and copying to the new one I may create more issues (Diskwarrior would not replace the old directory due to a disk malfunction).
I could reinstall most of the app's (include Final Cut Studio, Adobe After Affects, etc.) but I'm just not looking forward to going through each one individually. Also, is there an easy way to copy over my user files (doc's, email's, etc.) from that old drive?
The biggest thing is I just don't want to screw up the new drive and install. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Did you do the Super Duper clone before you tried to reinstall the OS? If so, the original install disc is likely earlier than 10.4.11, and that may be why you are getting the message.
When trying to reinstall the OS, did you select the "Archive and Install" option? If not, you might try that. Here's a link that might help:

    Good luck!

  • Mac Book Pro 15" mid 2009 after installing new hard drive and 8 gb memory, start up disk is still full, start up from power off is very slow, and programs open immediately after start up EX. word, excel.  Help?

I installed a new 1tb WD hardrive in my mid 2009 macbook pro along with upgrading from 4gb to 8 gb.
My start up disk is still almost full, booting up is extremely slow, and programs open up by themselves once booted up ex:word, excel.
New TB drive shows up alng with 8 GB but, new hard drive not updating somehere?  What am I missing?  See screenshots below

Thanks for the response, but I'm looking for answers to a few of the other answers before I look at completeing the steps above.
    1.  Whyis the new TB drive recognized in image 1 but still have the original 256GB size still recognized(and almost full) in image 1 also?  The HD should now be 1 TB, not 256 correct?  If this were the case, the HD, would only be fraction of full capacity,  Where is the disconnect between reconizing the installed tb HD but, it not being used?
2.Image Number 2 shows once again that the new tb internal HD is recognized.  However, in image 3, the HD 256GB drive is still shown underneath the new HD.  Does this show that I am misssing something, some step, related to confirming the new HD should be fully reconized instaed of this old 256 that still remains?
    3.  In image 4, the SATA heading, shows the TB hardrive,  However, in image 5, the 256GB drive is still being shown under the storage heading?  Once again, seems like I've missed some simple step to make this all the same?
4.Why is the start up from boot up soooo slow now.  I was never even close to this slow(slower than PC startup slow) before the new HD was installed.  IS this common when updraging to a new HD?  Doesn't seem right?
    5.  Why now all of a sudden when the computer finally boots up are certain programs automatically opening up, word, excel, when they have never opened up like this before?
Summary:  1. New memory issues, 2. Very slow start up, 3.  Programs opening up automatically at startup.
Until I address these issues, I'm not going to worry about loking through and deleting heavy folders.
    All responses welcomed!

  • If I can't find the start up disks, is there anyway to get iWork back after installing a new hard drive?

I had to install a new hard drive because my orginal one crashed. When I bought my macbook, iWork came pre-installed. Now with a new hard drive I would like iWork back on my computer, but can't find the start up disks, assuming I'd be able to do it that way. Is there anyway I can contact Apple and have them give me the iWork software?
(Overall, very upset about this since my macbook is only 2 years old and I lost everything. A friend of mine has been working on it for 3 weeks trying to recover some data.)

    - Did you restore from a backup that contained the photos?
    - The backup only contains photos in the iPod's Camera Roll album. It does not included photos synced to the iPod.
    - All you can do is try restoring from backup again.
