Merging iMovie 10 events, projects and library...
I had my prior version iMovie events and projects on a nonstartup internal drive (in folders "iMovie Events" and "iMovie Projects"). I hadn't used iMovie in a while, and iMovie had updated itself to version 10.0.5. Last night I opened it up and used it, and now have an "iMovie Events," "iMovie Projects," and "iMovie Library" file in ~/Documents/Movies
I'd like to move the contents of the new Events and Projects folder to the nonstartup internal drive location with all the projects and events (old and new) in those folders on the nonstartup drive. From what I've read, that is supposed to be done within iMovie, but I don't see how to do that. The drive does NOT show up anywhere within iMovie!
Secondly, I only seem to have one iMovie Library file, and it is in ~/Documents/Movies, but when iMovie 10 opened, there were no events or projects listed. How do persuade iMovie 10 to load the old projects and events? If I open up iMovie 9.0.9, it shows the projects and events that were created under 9.0.9 but does NOT show the 10.0.5 projects and events. Is the 9.0.0 iMovie Library file in a different location, and if so, is there a way to merge the contents of these libraries?
Basically no. Projects are now part of events and not separate from them.
Geoff.

IMovie deletes my projects and event when importing another video!!!
I was working on an iMovie project and was just importing a file and it did not import, but then iMovie deleted all my projects and events. I then found the projects and events saved in Finder but they will not open. When I clicked on them it opened iMoviebut will not open the projects. How do I fix this and get my projects and events back on iMovie?
I would try trashing your Preferences files. For full instructions, see this link.

How to restore iMovie 10 events & projects from Time Machine?
Here is the scenario I am facing: I completed some projects and then moved those events & projects to an external HD that subsequently died. The question I have is how can I tap into Time Capsule's history to restore the events and projects I moved out from the internal HD and later lost because the external HD died? All of this happened in Mac OS Mavericks, running iMovie 10, so "my stuff" lives within the "iMovie Library.imovielibrary" file whose content I should not see/modify.
Thank you, eugenHello eugen_nw
Open up Finder and navigate to your Movies folder where the library was stored and enter Time Machine and you should see the cascading Finder Windows and you can go back an find the file and then click Restore to bring back the file. Check out the article below and there is a section for restoring files.

Removing Events, Projects from Library manually
Hi
Has anyone removed either Events or Projects from the Library manually (deleting from package contents on drive)?
Any reason there could be a problem?
best
elmerAh, so you do have experience of what can go wrong. That's different. I just posted a discussion about my experiment.
You say do it inside, I see no way to do that. Not without copying the project''s media along with the project. And that happens with external consolidation too right. If I consolidate an event (projects only) outside FCPX, it will copy the media used in those projects also. I don't want to copy the original clips that constitute the 40+minutes of the first half or the 45 minutes I've reached with more to do of the second half.
The reason I would do it is that I'm having lots of twirling color ball and drop down windows saying projects that are unneeded are loading. Into the ram. I'm trying to figure out how to lessen the ram's load and it always seems to load old projects. Editing segments of a feature-length doc, I often experiment where I see a possible different route, and if I'm going to make more than a couple changes, or I'm not sure if I am, I duplicate the project and continue working. I don't think that's uncommon.
In FCP and earlier versions of FCPX you could easily get past the problem by: in FCP, duplicating the project and deleting old sequences (you could always copy back in), or in earlier FCPX, removing specific event and project folders from Final Cut Events and Final Cut Projects folders (you could always return).
THANKS for taking the time to help, I very much appreciate it.

Git, Main project and library project
I use git for version control, eclipse+flex builder for flex development.
I created a library prject 'core' and a main project 'base' which uses 'core'.
so my question is, how can I manage the 2 projects with Git, whena new developer check out 'base', it will also check out 'core' automatically, and references 'core' in 'base'
thanks in advanceSounds like a bug. However, I would recommend that you don't import all 8,000 images into a single project. Assuming each of your folders represents a shoot I would make a project for each one.
This is because you can import/export projects and you might want to export one for DVD backup. An 8,000 image project probably won't fit on a DVD if you're shooting with raw files. Also, this should make it cleaner to import projects captured on another computer (like a laptop).
I initially imported all my images into a single project, but eventually moved images into many small projects. You can always rearrange things from within the UI after the fact. -
IMovie cannot see projects and events on Synology NAS
I am using their 3.1 firmware. Which I believe is the latest.
And I have the latest Lion OS on my MB Pro.
I realized today that iMovie does not see the hard drive the way it used to in Snow Leopard.
I have read other threads here where people were using ReadyNAS and everything started working after Lion OS upgrade.
But that is not the case for me.
Anybody any ideas as to what to do?
Thanks!I am using:
- Synology NAS with DSM 4.0,
- iMove '11
- Lion OS 10.7.3
iMovie cannot see my library on the NAS either. -
IMovie 10: Events / Projects layout
Is there an option/setting in iMovie version 10 to sort/list events and projects the same way as iMovie 11 version 9, events up top and projects below? The current layout is very confusing. Thanks.
Basically no. Projects are now part of events and not separate from them.

IMovie won't open and Library Folder is missing in Finder
A few days ago, I downloaded the recent iMovie program. I even used it to make a video. Today I wanted to make another one but iMovie won't open at all. The wheel just spins and spins and nothing opens. So, I went into Finder and noticed my Library folder was missing. How did that happen? Is that why iMovie won't open?
I searched the Discussion Forums and saw how to find the Library folder in Lion. (Press Option and hit the Go button in the menu bar.) But, I have Maverick. I tried this anyway but I have no idea what/where the Go button is.
How do I find, or replace if necessary, my Library folder and get iMovie to open? I have a mid-2007 iMac that's been upgraded from Snow Leopard, so I don't want to put the Install Disk in and lose everything. Help? Thanks. Sorry for the confusion with the Library Folder. It's just been a long day all around.
Memory 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
I know it's older but it's never caused me a day's trouble since I've owned it. I hate to replace it until the next upgrade.
ETA: I just opened the Activity Monitor in Utilities and it says, out of 4GB of Memory, that 3.88GB are Used. I don't understand this because I have very, very few things loaded onto my iMac at all. I've always had tons of memory left. I don't have any music on my PC at all. No movies, either. My dock only has Finder, Launchpad, Dashboard, Safari, Firefox, TextEdit and System Preferences.
Here's a report from my Activity Monitor. Any suggestions? I have no idea what some of these things are, like: CalendarAgent (I don't use calendar at all),

HT202853 iMovie failing to update older projects and events on external hard drive.
I've made sure my iMovie events and iMovie projects files are on the top level of my external hard drive, however iMovie says, "iMovie could not find any events or project files to update" please help.
I only recently updated my computer to OSX 10.10.1 ; before that, I was using OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. Not sure if that has any effect on this topic.
Here are my specs:
Type: MacBook Pro (13-inch, Early 2011)
Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory: 4GB 1333 MHz DDR3
Startup Disk: Macintosh HD
Pretty sure graphics and serial dont matter so I wont put it in.
But yea, I've been trying to figure out what's going on for a few days and have had no result.
This problem's really hindering my progress for a film I'm making and iMovie is getting more and more frustrating to use as it develops.
I hope somebody be able to help me asap.
ThanksIf you want to try and start over with the iMovie 10 "Update Projects and Events...", remove the "UpdatedToiMovie10" file in both the iMove Events and iMovie Projects folders (the older folders). Then open iMovie 10 and reselect "Update Projects and Events...". My expectation is that you will experience the same missing events problem I have, caused by changing the clip date and time in the previous version of iMovie (9). It's a bug that persists through iMovie 10.0.8 (just released a few days ago). Really really wish Apple could fix this.

Moving the iMovie 9 Resources (Events & Projects) Folders ?
Hi there. Recently I moved my iTunes Library and Aperture Library folder to an external dedicated 1TB hard drive.... this has been great in freeing up valuable hard drive space on my main computers hard drive. My iMovie resource files (i Movie Events & iMovie Project) are also very large and it would be great to move these to the external 1TB drive. But when I look at the preferences for the app... I don't see a "selection destination library" option. It must be something silly I'm not seeing.... or can it be... you can't have the resource files exist outside the main "Movies" folder on the main user drive.
Any comments or suggestions are most welcome.
Yours sincerely,
Anthony

Message was edited by: Anthony MacCarthyYou can move Events and Projects to the external drive. This must be done in iMovie, not the Finder.
First click VIEW/By DISK. You will see your properly formatted drives listed in the Events source pane and the Projects source pane. You can drag and drop Events and Projects to these disk icons. iMovie will automatically create the proper folders on the external drive.
There are additional options in iMovie 09. For example, you can move an Event, Project, and associated resources to an external drive together, so that if you need to port them to a different computer, it is easily done. See the HELP for details. -
Delete iMovie Events, Projects, Sharing after update iMovie 10.0?
After updating to iMovie 10.0 in Finder appears a 'iMovie-library' but the folders 'iMovie Events, Projects and Sharing' are still there too. These last folders are roughly same size as the new 'iMovie-library'. Can you delete these old folders? I could use the space!
I have already updated my old library.
Thanks in advance!I updated to Mavericks and the new iMovie last night as well as I have always been an early adopter. Unfortunately this time, I think I was a little too quick.
From what I can tell, the new iMovie takes all old events and creates a new iMovie library. I believe if you wanted to, you could potentially revert back via time machine and grab the old imovie back and use the old events and projects folders? Can someone please confirm? I would like to do this.
After I did my upgrade, I was left with to iMovie events libraries. One was called iMovie events and the other imovie events 1. The second one is my old library that resides on my external thunderbolt drive where I would like to keep it. The iMovie theater folder was also added but inside the Movies folder on my internal drive. I don't want that either.
I usually adopt pretty quickly to iMovie changes but at this point it might have finally pushed me to Final Cut Pro X, to get back that iMovie linear "feel". I can't see anything at all anymore in the new iMovie that shows any time line and ease of use.
Cheers -
Disk appears twice in Project and Event window
There seems to be a bug in iMovie that causes the default disk to appear twice in the project and event viewer if you have a symbolic link in the path.
For years I have used a symlink to allow me to locate my Users area onto a second drive. This keeps all my user data separate from the more generic system data. Occasionally an application gets confused by this link and this seems to be the case with iMovie.
I think what is happening is that iMovie is trying to list my home directory which by default is usually on Macintosh HD/Users/louie but when it hits the symlink at /Users -> /Volumes/DataDisk/Users it sees this is actually on drive DataDisk. Then I think it looks for all mounted volumes and it finds DataDisk again and doesn't realize that this is already recorded and includes it again.
Other than this odity it seems to work just fine. If I add a project or event, initially it appears in only one of the DataDisk entries in iMovie. Then if I restart iMovie the new project and/or event will show under both entries. The actual project and events are correcty created in my ~/Movies directory.
-louieI don't know an easy way to fix that if you are using a symlink.
Click on this link for some good information about how to set up your home folder in a different location. You can set it up on OSX where you will not need a symlink. On the other hand, if its working well for you, may be best to leave it alone.

Please please help me ! iMovie keeps crashing everytime I try to work on a project, it has happened before, so I deleted everything and it seemed to work but now its back, this is my final year Uni project and its in on Monday ... any help would be soooo appreciated !!
With regard to the HD Questions:
1.- You can copy the entire 40GB hard drive main folder (if you cam is a HG-10, it will be named "AVCHD"), and that way you have the original video stored wherever you want. In the future, you can get that folder from a hard drive or mounted as a disk image, and iM08 will think it is a camcorder and let you import again.
2.- AVCHD gets converted to Apple Intermediate Coded (AIC) because AVCHD is not meant for "editing", but for storage and transfer. Now on AIC you can edit frame-specific, without killing your CPU. It is "good" that it gets converted.
3.- Once you have processeD with iM08, and exported into AppleTV, you could erase everything, including the event, project, and appleTV file from your computer, as long as the file is in the actual AppleTV set-top box, and you do not erase it from there while syncing, you should be able to see it. That way you will save storage/disk space, because you are right, the AIC file is very large.
However: You must understand, that if you need to recreate this AppleTV final file, you will have to start over, getting it from the Copied hard drive, import into iM08, create the project, and export to AppleTV, AGAIN, so you pick which one you erase, based on how much you need this file.
As per you SD question, I do not use DV format, so I AIN'T GOT NO IDEA.

We originally set up our Mac with 2 user accounts, one for me and one for my wife, but now we are moving everything into one account to save disk and generally make life easier. Problem: we both have our own iMovie projects. How do we merge both sets of projects and events into one library? It is the last item on my list, after which I can delete the second user.
Thanks in advance. This would be much easier if you have access to an external drive. The drive can be either Firewire or USB, but it must be formatted as MacOS Extended (journaled) - not FAT32.
Open iMovie. Click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK.
In the iMovie Project Library List, hold down the Command Key and drag the Project to the icon for the external disk.
File the Project selected, select FILE/CONSOLIDATE MEDIA. with this command you can move all EVENTS used in the project, as well as all music files used in the project to the external drive.
See iMovie Help for details.
Once every project and associated events are all on the external drive, you can reverse the process and move them to your oght account on the internal drive. Or, if you prefer, you can keep them on the external drive, where both accounts will be able to see them. -
Copying Hard Drive and Library
If I have one external hard drive -- with all my Aperture Export projects and Library copied on to it, and then decided to back THIS hard drive up onto another hard drive, will my projects and library copy and be functional on the second one?
I'm concerned if it wasn't copied straight from Aperture whether it will be functional.
Thanks! They'll be all functional, the Library is in fact a folder (you can see its content by Ctrl+click on it and select Show package content)
If you want to test the Library backup just go to Aperture's preferences and select the new Library location.
If you use Vault instead of a full Library backup, you'll save some space (thumnails aren't copied) but will loose some speed while recovering from backup (thumnails would need to be created again)
