Merging in Numbers is Greyed Out

Hello, I'm working on numbers, and I'm not able to merge two adjacent cells.They're both completely empty and selected, but the "merge cells" button is greyed out. Any ideas?

  • Merge Address Book Cards Greyed out

    Hi all,
    I've got an envelope that I use every once in a while. It has a logo and return address. For the recipient address, I just go to address book, change the information in the group that I call "current envelope" then I go to pages, merge and print.
    However, last time I went to do this, it added the address that I wanted from the group, plus 3 other addresses (i don't know where they came from.) When I try to merge again with the address book to refresh the data, the Merge Address Book Cards option is grey. What is going on?

    I can just confirm I had it once too. I just restarted. That solved it. But I always tought that is a Win solution If I can reproduce it I try to search why it happened.
    But I have an other problem with mail merge:
    If I merge more then 1 address it asks me if it shall put it in a new document. If it does so it removes all the empty fields. If you merge only 1 address it merges it always in the curent document and the empty fields stay. That still would be ok but they also print with the field name on the letters. Looks like a bug to me.
    Sure I could remove the fields manually... but hey? Either it should give the possibility to merge it into a new document even with 1 address and remove the empty fields or keep it in the same document with the empty fields but shouldn't print them.
    I think this are the small thing they will need to sort out over time (like that there is no possiblity to choose from "recent documents" in the open/create file wizard - if you close the wizard it closes Pages too. Or that after opening Pages without the wizard and choosin from the recent documents the blank document created automatically with the start up is not closed automatically if it wasn't edit before an other file was opened (yes , even MS has some smart tricks)).

  • 'Merge Cell' is greyed out - how do I activate it and merge two cells together?

    I am just learning Numbers, trying to merge two cells together should be a very simple process!
    I have followed the instructions in help
    The 'merge cells' function remains greyed out no matter what I do - I therefore cannot merge two or more cells into one!
    Please help, is there something I need to activate in the cell?

    Actually, a "truly blank document" would be an empty canvas, containing no table of any type, no document header or footer locations, no document margins, no page definitions, no page orientation. Just a blank sheet onto which you could put whatever objects you wish.
    Perhaps Apple should have named the 'not blank' templates "Basic" rather than blank, removed the header column, and left the header row intact. That would match the "Basic" table style available in the Tables button's menu, used for adding a table to a Sheet.
    If you really do want to always start with a table which has no header rows and no header columns, it's easy enough to set up.
    Open a new 'blank' document (Apple's 'blank').
    Click on the Table 1 icon in the Sheets list and press delete. (faster than selecting cell A1, then taking two trips to the Table menu to delete first the (header) row then the (header) column)
    Click the Tables button and choose Plain to insert a 'plain' table (no header row, no header column)
    (optional) Add or delete rows or columns to make the blank table the size you desire.
    (optional) Position the table where you want it.
    Save the result as a Template.
    In Numbers Preferences > General > For New Documents, select Use Template, then Choose your new template.
    Until you change that preference, any New document you make will contain your new, 'blank' table.

  • Merge Clips is greyed out

    I shot video on Canon 5D, converted to ProRes and imported into FCP 7. Audio was recorded separately on a JVC GY-HM100U (lens shut, so no video footage just sound) and imported into FCP. I've marked in on video and audio clips to merge them, but the merge clips button is greyed out. The clips are in the browser window. I've tried dragging them into the timeline and merging them there. Merge Clips is still greyed out.
    Help please!
    Details: Audio- 48KHz, 16-bit
    Video- 44.1KHZ

  • Split event before clip is greyed out

    I can't split event before a clip and I can't merge because it is greyed out. I am highlighting in the events pane. I am completely updated. I have rebooted. I am using imovie8. I am new to this and thought having a mac was going to be so easy. So far, I have had to troubleshoot just above everything I do before getting ahead. It's getting a little old. Can anyone help?

    Oops sorry - I'm new to iMovie, except for a short one I did a couple years back from stills.  I only take the occasional one with my p&s camera - so it's mp4's - but now I've got a project I want to do for my son and his band.  So, another learning curve
    Yes I've been trying to split clips in the events browser.  And sometimes the "split event" option come up black, but most times it's greyed out.  Sometimes I even get the black and greyed-out in different places within the same event.  I can't find any logic behind it, it appears to be random.
    I haven't come across anything called "the timeline" - so don't know what that is.  I searched it just now in iMovie but nothing came up.

    This can depend on the the Apple ID that is used.
    I was under the impression that the invididual parts of an iCloud ID could be "registered" separately for iMessages but this may not be correct.
    I have an Apple ID that is based on a email from a source external to Apple. (an old Dial-up account email)
    I registered this for iCloud and at the time got an @me.com name as well.
    I also have two iPhones so I decided to use the @me.com name on one iPhone and the older Dial-up on the other.
    This seemed to work up to the OS X10.8.2 and iOS 6 updates.
    AT this points I did the OS X one first then the iPhones
    I got alerts in Messages on the Mac to add the Dial-up ID iPhone's number to Messages which I accepted.
    The Messages Menu > Accounts > iMessages showed the iPhone Number as an alternative Receive ID and offered itself in the Drop as the Send from ID.
    I then set up the second iPhone and got an alert in Messages to add the Apple ID and the iPhone number to Messages.
    I said no to this.
    At iOS 6 this did not get added to the Messages > Preferences > Accounts > iMessage panel.
    However at iOS 6.0.2 the iPhones are showing their own Numbers as Greyed out  and even though I refused again the @me.com ID and second iPhone's Number they have been added to the Message Menu > Preferences > Accounts > iMessages pane although they are not ticked.
    The only link these two Apple ID Names have is that they are both associated with the iCloud Account.
    (I Can log in to the same iTunes account with either name, and post here, and access iCloud in a web browser - the password is the same).
    I have successfully managed to get one iPhone to have it's greyed out Number ticked so it can accept iMessages sent to the Number.
    This involved removing the Apple ID on that iPhone, Closing iMessages, restarting iMessages and then re-adding the Apple ID
    I did get an alert to say the ID  would not work anywhere in iMessages when removing it.
    It was 24 hours before I got an alert in Messages again to add the iPhone Number and Apple ID (I said no and they are not active but do show in the iMessage account on the Mac)
    I am a little confused by this bit:-

    I can see the iPhone Numbers in Messages Menu > Preferences > Accounts >iMessages Account pane but they are not greyed out even when not active
    They are only greyed out on the iPhone's themselves.
    I would also make sure the Apple IDs used on each computer and it's related iPhone are separate from each other.

    the Mail Merge choice in the edit menu is greyed out. I tried everything to resolve this issue (new document, etc). For some unknown reason, I cant mail merge in pages 09. Any suggestion will be very helpful.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Numbers '09 forum.
    Although you are probably asking about Merge from a Numbers document, you question really has to do with Pages, and the Pages '09 forum is likely a more appropriate place for it.
    Have you inserted any Merge Fields into the document? Until you enter the fields and specify a source, Merge will be grey.

    I tried to drag one event into another event but was unable to do so. The event that I tried to move into a second one would only move to another position in the event columnn, but it would not merge into another one.

  • The Function Buttons are Greyed Out in Numbers

    I am new to Numbers having used Excel for years. I am trying to add up a column of figures but when I highlight the column and click the 'Function' button at the top of the page, all the functions are greyed out so not usable. Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?

    select multiple columns, then drag the quick sum tag or use the formula:
    =sum(<RANGE1>, <RANGE2>, <RANGE3>, ...)
    where <RANGE1> thru <RANGEn> are any valid ranges
    e.g.
    =sum(A:C) will sum columns which would be the same thing as:
    =sum(A, B, C)
    you can also sum rows 1, 4, and 7 like this:
    =sum(1:1, 4:4, 7:7)

  • Data Merge Multiple Records Per Page Greyed Out

    I am using InDesign cs5.5. I am attempting to create a catalog with the data merge option. I am attempting to do a data merge from the Master Page.
    As you can see in the image, I have inserted my fields from the data source file. All images, original file, and data source file are in the same folder. I am inserting this info on the left sheet of the master file. When I select "Create Merged Document" the "select multiple records per page" is greyed out, however, there is plenty of room on the page for the 8 records I want it to show. See image below.
    After watching tutorials, reading, etc. I made sure that my document does not have facing pages. I deleted my "page 2" to avoid that conflict. I made sure that the placeholder "allows overwrite from the master". I also deleted my "cache"/settings" by doing "ctrl, alt, shift" when reopening the program. I read that it may be because the files need to be on the right hand sheet of the master, however, when I move my info to the right sheet, I get the following message.
    I have watched the tutorial videos, read the entire help section regarding data merge, and have correctly created my data source file. I've tried everything I've seen on the forums, apart from uninstalling and reinstalling. Please tell me that someone can help me figure this out as soon as possible. I'm in crunch time!

    Thanks Peter. That helped me un-grey the multiple records. I was able to complete a data merge, however, this is what happens.
    As you can see in this image, I have the margins setup the way I prefer, and the data merge previews correctly.
    Once I click to merge, this is the new document I get - it's only putting one record per page (even though the multiple records per page is selected), and it inserts this layout, not onto actual pages in indesign. It looks reall odd.

    Any suggestions on fixing this?
    Also, my InDesign freezes up when I try and do a merge of my entire sheet (182 items). The images above are when I tested doing just records 1-32.

  • Why is Merge Selected greyed out?

      I am working with a file with many many sub layers and illustrator is running really slow and keeps crashing. I want to merge many of the sublayers into one layer to save space and help simplify the file, But after I select the layers the Merge Selected option under the layers menu is still greyed out and unable to be used. Anyone know how to get merge selected to work? Or any other way to merge layers?

    You're not going to like this and your going to respond with a WHAT!? But here goes, the sub layers are already by definition merged they are contain within a top level layer.
    There can be no merging since they already are merged.
    Top level layers on the other hand cane be along with their sub layers.
    That's it.

  • TS1702 Numbers keeps copying saved documents randomly and saves them to my Numbers desktop on my ipad.  They are greyed out and you cannot open them but the original I can open and its happening all the time to eery document

    I have numbers on my ipad 2, I have saved documents I have created in a folder so far so good.  For some odd reason when I open Numbers before I anything it autocopies every single document saved, and there are about 50 documents.  When it saves them the Numbers Icon is greyed out, the originals are still in colour.  I can open the originals but cannot open the copies which I have to delete every single time.  What is happening?

    Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the iPad shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the iPad back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps from the tray before doing the reset.

  • Mail merge from numbers

    Hi there,
    I'm trying to create a mail merge using an address spreadsheet created in Numbers and then trying to merge it into Pages.
    I'ne taken all the necessary steps, selecting the source, selecting the merge fields etc etc and when I get to the final step the Mail Merge option in Pages in greyed out. I am thinking the Pages is prompting me to take another step but I'm not sure what that next step is. I've watched the video on the Apple support site and followed every step carefully.
    If anyone here can help I would very much appreciate it.

    You need to designate a row as a header row in the Numbers table. Imported spreadsheets don't mark the first row as a header row. If the top row does contain the labels, hover the cursor over the row number, click the down-facing arrow that appears & choose convert to header row.
    If you don't have a row with labels to convert, add a header row using the Table menu or click the icon (middle icon) in the format bar then type in the labels.

    You do not need 3 variables at all, which was the reason why I asked my 'new' question. Are you using real pretest question slides or normal question slides or custom question slides?
    If you use Pretest question slides, the score will be stored in cpQuizInfoPretestPointsscored and the percentage in  cpQuizInfoPretestScorePercentage
    If you use normal question slides, the score will be stored in cpQuizInfoPointsscored and the percentage in  cpInfoPercentage
    If you use custom question slides, you'll have user variables in which you calculate both score and percentage
    If the numbers you are mentioning are percentages you'll create one conditional action with 3 decisions (here example for normal question slides):
    First decision: IF cpInfoPercentage is greater or equal to 70
                                 Jump to slide CHP3_1
    Second decision:  IF cpInfoPercentage is less than 70   AND
                                   cpInfoPercentage is greater or equal to 50
                                       Jump to slide CP2_1
    Third decision: IF cpInfoPercentage is less than 50
                               Jump to slide CHP1_1
    The slide labels CHPx_1 are for the first slides of each chapter.
