Merging layers then using smart sharpening

I have been trying to apply smart sharpening to multi layers by creating copies of the layers, merging the copies then using smart sharpening on the merge. The change shows in the smart sharpening dialogue and I can see the change in the merged layer thumbnail but when I press OK the sharpening change disappears. The funny thing is that this method works pefectly with unsharp mask or any other image adjustment I apply to the copied/merged layer, it's just smart sharpening that doesn't work.
Any ideas?

I normally do use 100% view when sharpening and as you suggested, this solves the problem.
I am still slightly puzzled why unsharp mask seemed to handle a less than 100% view better than smart sharpening but that doesn't really matter as long as I remember to always use 100%.

Photoshop CS6 on W7 platform crashing recently using smart sharpen filter.

Been working on a project moving files from Lightroom 4 to Photoshop CS6 for final edits and experiencing recent files crashing PS CS6 when using the smart sharpen filter. I've processed hundreds of files in CS6 and never had this issue till lately. All other filters work fine, including other sharpen options, it's just the smart sharpen interface. I over-installed/re-installed Photoshop CS6 thinking a driver might have corrupted for that filter, then installed all available upgrades but the problem persists. I can't figure it out, and it's a problem - I use smart sharpen a lot for final output. Am I overlooking something simple? Or, do I need to just uninstall PS CS6 and do a total re-install or is there another option? Thanks.

You should provide more detailed info, like who is your VPN provider, what VPN protocol (PPTP, L2TP, IPSec,) whether you're on home Wi-Fi, public Wi-Fi, 3G and if public Wi-Fi or 3G, then geographical location. (i.e.: Starbucks on 5th & Broadstreet, Detroit.)

Photoshop CC reports out of memory using Smart Sharpen

When I try to use Smart Sharpen PS reports out of memory even though I have 32GB of RAM, 25GB available and PS is allowed to use 76%. Increasing amount PS is allowed to use doesn't change anything.

You are definitely using the 64bit version?
Have you tried restarting Photoshop?
What are your Preferences > Performance settings?
Smart Sharpen was one of the items addressed in 14.2 and should be making more use of GPU acceleration. I get almost zero lag with it now.

No, unless… you are on a Mac and have Time Machine backups, or can restore your Windows box back to an earlier poit in time.
But there's nothing within the Photoshop application itself to help you once you save and close a file,

Using smart sharpening

When using filter smart sharpening (or is it sharpen smart) PS stops working, a foursquare apears and that's it. I even can't quit the program. Did I do something wrong or is it a fault in PS?

Photoshop CC 2014 Smart Sharpen Lockup.

I am using the latest PS CC 2014 version as of today, June 19, 2014. When I try to use Smart Sharpen, the Smart Sharpen window opens and then the program locks up and I have to perform a Ctrl-Alt-Del. How can I solve this problem? I like Smart Sharpen and I would like to use it. Thank you all. -Steven

Smart Sharpen Preview Inaccurate

When I use smart sharpen, the preview box shows the image will be sharper than it actually makes it when commited. Actually, even before it's commited I can see by moving the Sharpen Box over and looking at the image in its main window... I press P to toggle the preview off and can see that there is some effect that will be applied, but not as much as it shows it sharpening in the Sharpen Preview Image.

For a simple image I tested with just now, even one where I duplicated the layer like you have, mine shows pixel-for-pixel accurate between the small preview, the preview on the image, itself, and what gets committed. In other words the small preview matches the preview on the image and the image doesn’t change when I click ok, meaning the preview on the image was accurate.
I wonder if there is something wrong with the video drivers, and turning the Advanced mode on or off in Preferences / Performance might change how things work.
In your situation, does the preview on the image match what gets committed with the smaller preview on the tool being too sharp, or is the preview on image also different from what gets committed?
And are you using PS-CC 14.2.1 and OSX 10.9.2 or something older for either?

How can I apply a timestretch to different null objects and then use them to parent layers?

I am using several hundred stills which are held on screen for different lengths of time. Is there a way to create null objects with various timestretch values and then use them to parent my stills?
I'm trying to find an equivalent to the 'paste attributes' function in Final Cut Pro.

If you have movement on the stills you can set up expressions based on in and out points. That's what I do. I then drop all my stills in order into a comp then set the out point for all stills for the longest duration. I then set group colors for layers that I want to make different lengths, do a group select and then adjust the out points for those layers. When I'm done I sequence the layers using the keyframe assistant.
The other way I work is to use an audio track with markers for timing. I have an expression that reads the markers and sets opacity for the layers based on pairs of markers. The motion is also controlled by expressions. That's an even faster way to set up an animated slide show.
The last way I work is just to set in an out points for all layers, sequence the layers, use expressions to do the motion and then use time remapping on a pre-comp to adjust the timing of the slide show. All methods are quick and easy.
Here's a fly in bounce and then drop out fxx preset that will give you an idea of how expressions based on in and out point work for slide shows. You just drag the layer to it's resting position, apply the animatiokn preset and the layer flys in, bounces, and then drops out the bottom of the comp. Works in 2D and 3D space.

Importing Photoshop Merged layers problem

Hi. I'm trying to import a layered Photoshop file into After Effects. I'm on a new intel iMac running Leopard and both PS (extended) and AE are CS3. I chose the merged layers option because I don't want all the layers in AE, just the final composition. Am I correct in thinking that if I update my photoshop file, it'll update in AE in the merged file?
That's not really my problem, just making sure that's how it works. My problem is that this is how my image looks in photoshop:

I was having the same problem when using quicklook, so I'm assuming it's something with photoshop. I turned on save full size image preview in the file handling preferences in photoshop, which did fixed the problem when using quicklook, but didn't fix the image in After Effects. I reloaded the footage and even reimported it into a new project in AE but it's still the same.
Anyone know what's going on? Thank you so much.

Thanks. I do realize I could do that, but I have about 60 Backgrounds. So it'd be nice to be able to import the whole photoshop file and still be able to work on it without having to flatten it every time. That's kind of what I've been doing so far.
Alright, I came up with a better workaround. I created a new psd file and put the original layered psd on a layer as a smart object and then imported that layer into After Effects. This seems to be working nicely, and I can still edit the original without having to resave a flattened file all the time.
It's still be nice to get this working properly though. It seems to only display the original layer of the photoshop file.

How do I fix problem with Smart Sharpen & CR as filter

Smart Sharpen doesn't apply (or apply completely). Photoshop CC on Mac OSX 10.7.5
new merged layer > Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen > adjust sliders > toggle Preview > click OK (progress bar) > nothing or 50% applied
1. Smart Sharpen (SS) shows changes from sliders in SS dialog box AND on underlaying image in PS but checking and unchecking the Preview box only toggles the image in PS, the SS dialog box does not change.
2. After clicking 'OK' SS does not seem to apply at normal ranges but when the radius is cranked up to super ugly it appears to apply at about 50% (Opacity and Fill are at 100%).
Related Problem:
After using 'Camera Raw as a filter' on a new merged layer, then adding a layer mask, and then painting with a brush at 100% opacity and Flow, it appears that only about 50% opacity is applied to the mask from the brush.

I did a lot of such hymn things in the past, but I was alway working on the scans in Photoshop, like adjusting, retouching spots and cropping. And I was always seperating those images to be more flexible so I never run into such a problem.
I am always scanning in a higher quality level than I would need, I scan it in color, this allows me to eliminate paper color easily, even if I need 1-bit images at the end, I do it in color, so I can also turn the image.
I did once run into a similar problem with a scan I have got from a copier-scanner machine (it was not a song). But saving as PSD resolved my problem.
So I would suggest: Open your files in Photoshop, resave them as PSD files and use those instead. If you use 1-bit images (which is fine for this type of images) you should use a resolution equal to the printer's resolution.

Smart sharpen filter in CS5 not working

My smart sharpen filter is no longer working It seems to be doing it's job when I have a preview dialog box open, but as soon as I ok the changes the original image appears as if nothing happend. I've tried different files and it the same story: nicely sharpened image in the preview box and than nothing changes. And it used to work very well in the past. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks.

When you are zoomed out, many pixels are averaged into a single display pixel. For performance reasons, the sharpening is previewed on that downsampeld version of the image. When you apply the filter, it applies to the full resolution version of the image, which then gets downsampled again for your zoomed out preview.
So, let's say you had a grid of black and white pixels. Zoomed out, it looks like gray. Sharpening would appear to have an effect depending on the zoom level, but would never have any effect on the base level.
And no, there is no way to keep performance reasonable and give you an accurate preview of applying the filter to the full resolution image.

Merging Layers

I would like to know if there is a way to automatically merge a "base" layer with all other layers individually. For example, Layer one is an image, the "base layer". Layers 2 thru 200 are images that need to be merged with the base layer individually and then saved as individual files. We are now turning layer 2 on and saving, turning layer 2 off, turning on layer 3 then saving, etc. Hoping to find an easier and quicker method. Can anyone help? Thanks/

Take a look at File>Scripts>Export layers to files.
Once that is done, you can then use Layer>Merge Layers or Layer>Flatten image. The difference has to do with transparency, merge will leave the background transparent, whereas flatten will convert transparent areas to a white background. If you don't have any transparent areas, then either would work fine.
