Merging multiple iMovie projects

Is it possible to merge multiple imovie projects into one? Or is it possible to merge them into one continuous playing movie in iDVD?

Hi:
It's a little tedious but the brute force way is to open the first project and save it under a new name. Then open the second. Then literally copy the timeline from the second to the first. Repeat for the third project and so on. It takes some time as the copying process duplicates all the content into the new combined project. This obviously will take a lot of disk storage space! Maybe someone else knows if there is a way to do this working directly with the project files..
Another alternative is to use Roxio's Toast to burn a DVD by simply adding each of the projects individually into Toast. What you lose here is the ability to have the themes and so forth from iDVD but you will get the projects on a single DVD, and they will play in the order.
I am sure someone else has some better ideas about this. I would be interested too as I am in a process of making several small iMovies and want to combine them into several variations.

How do i burn multiple Imovie projects to one dvd with roxio toast 10? Can i add all of the projects or do i need to export them as a quicktime movie first or something?

You can share the first movie from iMovie, but all the others will need to be exported from iMovie as movies and dragged into the iMovie project.

  • Putting multiple iMovie projects onto one DVD

I was wondering if there was a way to put multiple iMovie projects onto one DVD using iDVD?

actually none of those options worked probably since the movies were in IMOVIE2
Ah... You didn't say it was an iMovie 2 project. iMovie project is different from iMovie HD.
I want to store the image file from the dvd's off site as I don't have the space to archive the projects - it seems I can't do that as it copies over to the server but shows up as a 4kb file - any suggestions how I can do this?
I might be wrong (since I don't have iMovie 2), I assume iMovie 2 has the similar QT "reference" movie as the iMovie HD. This "reference" movie is not a "self-contained" (a QT term) movie, i.e. it only has instructions of the makeup of the "real" movies. You cannot use it to archive. If you want to offload your movie from your computer, you should copy the entire iMovie 2 project folder to an external archive.

  • How do you merge 2 iMovie projects?

How do you merge 2 iMovie projects together? I have a 2 yr old iMac with iMovie 2011. Thank-you.

That's an easy solution. However you did not consider the harmful effects of the additional compression. Please consider that the "raw" video is already compressed before it leaves the camera. Then again as it's exported from iMovie the first time. After merging the projects (with your technique) it get compressed a third time. And perhaps a fourth time if the movie is burned onto a DVD.
I'm very familiar with the loss of image and sound quality due to excessive compression, because I produced 43 separate makeup application tutorials for a manufacturer's website. Everything was fine until they decided that they also wanted me to combine all of them onto a DVD. My video was shot at high-def so that wasn't an issue. The issue was how to combine all 43 videos without a substancial loss of image quality?
I tried the obvious method (proposed by elikness) and found that my text graphics (still photos) suffered the worst - literally jagged black text that looked almost blurry. So I replaced all my graphic panels and burned the DVD. My client was satisfied. I was not. God only knows what the 90-minute (combined) DVD will look like after they've paid somebody to make 10,000 copies.
    thank you - robert

First, Share your other project. Use SHARE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME. Choose Movie to QuickTime Movie. Under Options, choose Apple Intermediate Codec for Compression under Video Options. Save this movie where you can find it.
Then use FILE/IMPORT MOVIE to import this movie into your Event. Now you can use it as a Cutaway.

  • Burning multiple imovie projects to DVD

Students created projects in imovie, exported into iDVD. How can I burn
multiple students projects (approx. 3 min. each) onto ONE DVD?

    Welcome to the forums.
I don't think there's a way to combine iDVD projects without some serious tinkering. An alternative approach is to open iDVD and create a new project. You or they can now drag and drop their iMovie projects onto the menu area of iDVD (generally the lower half of the frame). You'll also need to create some submenus to fit all the videos onto a menu.
If your network prevents the drag/drop idea, a different strategy is for each student to Share/Export from iMovie into a self-contained, full quality Quicktime movie. You can drag/drop these into iDVD (as described above).

  • Merging 2 iMovie project together

    Hi,
I've builted an iMovie project in 2 part to fit it on DVD, because the lenght was too long to fit on one DVD.
Now, I need to make copies of the project to VHS. So I need to merge the 2 projects together to be able to export it to VHS using my camera as a passthrought.
What's the best way of doing so?
    Thanks

Hi Steve - if you are saying that the movie to be cut and pasted is 2.5 hours long, then I'm not surprised that it struggled! I would be starting to feel a bit sorry for the viewers!:-)
Ok - another way is to 'share' the movie to full Quality DV, and then import that into the other project. It WILL take some time!

  • How do you import multiple iMovie projects into one iDVD project?

    Hi.
I'm 17, and am trying to create a DVD of when the family went on a cruise. For different places/days, I've created different iMovie projects.
But, when I want to export to iDVD, it only lets me put one iMovie project into one iDVD project?
I've tried dragging the actual iMovie project files into iDVD but that doesn't work.
I know I could export to QuickTime and then drag it into iDVD, but it seems exporting just to iDVD is much quicker, and the quality is better.
Anyone know how I can do this?
    cheers
+P.S. If it helps, it's iMovie '11 with iDVD '09.+

That is not true. You can use them all in one DVD. I have just created my first DVD which has a trailer, a movie with chapters and several different slide shows.
All you have to do is save each project to Media Browser. (Choose Share in toolbar). Open iDVD and choose your theme or no theme. On the right will be all your options such as audio, media photo's etc. Choose your various video's/projects etc and just drag and drop which ones you want to the page and they will automatically put themselves there with the given name of each video/project.

  • Merging six iMovie projects into one iDVD movie?

    Hi,
I've got 6 iMovie projects which I want to burn on to DVD. But, I don't want them as individual movies, but as one movie. Also, I'd like it to be able to select chapters for each project of these iMovie projects on the DVD - is this possible?
    Thx,
    Mont

    Mont,
iMovie doesn't offer a way to combine projects (yet!)... So, the workaround is to either create a new project with clips from the other 6 projects' events, or to use QT Pro to concatenate all the 6 rendered movies into a single one (easy to do with cut-n-paste using QT Pro), and re-import the final one back into iMovie, or import the individual Movies (rendered project output files) one-by-one back into a new iMovie project.
You would then use the Chapter Markers at the top right of the Project pane, and drag-n-drop them at appropriate points on your project clips where you want the chapters to begin. Once you export the final movie (using the Share option - to iDVD, or browser, or using QT), you can then import this into iDVD, which will recognize the chapter markers automatically.

  • Chapters for multiple iMovie projects (movies) in a single iDVD project

I sent three iMovie '11 projects with chapter markers to Media Browser. I dragged each of the movies from the Media Browser into a single iDVD project. Dragging the first movie resulted in the creation of one button named "play movie" and one button named "scene selections". But dragging in the second and third movies resulted in only a "play movie" button for each movie--no "scene selections". Does iDVD not allow multiple movies to have sub-menus? Am I required to combine the three projects while still in iMovie (such that there is in effect only two levels possible, not three)? From the description of how to create a project in iDVD, I was under the impression that I could have three main buttons (Sydney, Matakohe, and Brisbane), and have each sporting chapters. It would change the organization substantially to have reduce the structure to only two levels. And I've seen nothing that says this cannot be done.

Thanks for your comments. It strikes me as exceedingly odd that a program that is made for creating projects out of multiple movies provides scene selections (chapters) for only the first movie added. I also find it odd that this little fact is not mentioned anywhere and that I am apparently the first person in history to want to have a sub-menu for each movie in a project. I have had many views on this discussion group and on the iMovie '11 discussion group, but yours is the only answer so far. Why does the manual or Help (for both iDVD and iMovie) not say "Oh, by the way, you can add all the movies you want, but don't expect to get any chapters for them" (it makes little sense to provide chapters for one movie, if you can't for the rest). And, in iMovie: "if you are planning to put more than one movie on a DVD, don't waste your time adding chapter markers. They can't be used in iDVD."
I have Toast Titanium 6. It's a pretty old version, but I was able to use it to use it for something recently. Thanks again.

You can share the first movie from iMovie, but all the others will need to be exported from iMovie as movies and dragged into the iMovie project.

  • Impact on merging iPhoto events on iMovie projects?

I have made several iMovie projects, primarily using photos from various related events in iPhoto.  If I merge the iPhoto events where the pictures are currently located, will the iMovie projects be impacted / ruined / need to be started over?
I am working with the last iMovie and iPhoto BEFORE iLife '11 (have not upgraded to '11 out of fear of losing photos, etc.).  OS s/b most up-to-date Snow Leopard version.  Hardware is a MacBook Pro purchased in summer 2010.

  • Burning iMovie project to multiple DVDs?

I have a giant iMovie family movies project that will exceed the limits of a single DVD. Is there a way that iDVD will automatically burn it to multiple DVDs (that can be played as movies in DVD players)? Or do I have to edit down my iMovie project, which I don't really want to do? Sorry if this is a lame question, I'm a first-timer in this area and can't find the answer anywhere.
    thx
    Neil

This is by no means a lame question. However, iDvd cannot do this for you. But may I ask exactly how long the total run time / QT playback is in hours and mins.? And how much available HD space do you currently have on the boot volume (your main HD)?
You can go ahead in iM6 (free download from apple) and build your project and then export selected clip/s only directly from the iMovie 6 timeline in full quality. And then use only the exported QT files within iDvd'08 for a series of Dvd's. Hope that makes sense.
It may take several Dvd's but yes it can be done in iMovie (just not in iDvd alone).

  • How do I migrate iMovie project data/pointers from iPhoto to Aperture?

This may be a rather tricky question but here is what I want to do. I have 22GB of Photo's/Video's in iPhoto that I originally used at some point in the past to create some travel home movies. I currently have about 44GB of Photo's/Vid in Aperture. I like Aperture so much that I never use iPhoto anymore.
I've started moving just the albums with pictures in iPhoto over to Aperture. (simple enough) But now I have a lot of space I need to free up.
My question is possibly broken down into 2 parts.
    1) How do I move albums with photo's & video to Aperture and index them accordingly without affecting the iMovie projects that link to the original iPhoto data?
I want to keep my iMovie projects the way they are, in editable form, thus eliminating the need for iPhoto, so I can clean up 22GB.
    2) In iMovie, on the left window pane, it says "iPhoto Library" & "Aperture Library", with all the old iMovie projects pointing to the iPhoto library. Would moving the rest of my iPhoto library into Aperture automatically purge iMovie editable video projects?
I've backed everything up onto an external hdd, so I would sincerely appreciate any help on this topic. It sounds complicated, but I think it should be fairly straightforward. However, I thought I'd ask the community before actually attempting to do so.
Again, appreciate your help folks. Thanks.

Thanks for your suggestions, However I tried to do a simple test on one very short iMovie project and this is what has occurred:
Setup: (iPhoto '11, iMovie '11, Aperture 3.1.1 - All up to date)
to understand what's going on, prior to what I did below this is how my projects are setup, iPhoto has an event & album tagged F1 Montreal Weekend '08 with both photo / video. (my test project for the purposes of trying to get this to work) iMovie has a project I created based on that photo video and it's saved as an iMovie project called 'F1 Montreal' with references to the iPhoto database.
    Action:
First, in Aperture, I imported the whole iPhoto event above which brought over all 192 photos and about 36 videos. I then filed it in aperture under my new way of storing albums/videos and created a smart album for video within the Aperture project. Once I verified all the data is there, I then trashed the iPhoto event and album mentioned above to free up some space since it's now in Aperture. Finally, i closed both iPhoto & Aperture and loaded up iMovie.
    Results:
The project 'F1 Montreal' shows up as normal, with all its edits and such after clicking edit project. However, there is a little yellow exclamation mark that says this on every slice of video:
"This clips media file is not currently available.
    /users/{me}/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Masters/2008/F1 Montreal/{moviehere}.mov"
After some research on what this is and how to fix it, it seems there's no menu option to repoint the movie files to a different location, am I missing something or have I moved / merged these files the wrong way? Apparently there is some help in the iMovie help file that shows how to reconnect data, but I can't find it anywhere.
I would really appreciate any additional help on how to do this. I'm sure someone's tried doing this before, yes?
    Thanks!
