Merging old Aperture pictures into Aperture 3

Why can I not merge my old Aperture pictures into Aperture 3? There are about 18000 pictures and the activity window shows about 5000 "items to process." After processing only a small number of items everything quits. Because of this I have no ability to export or to use any of those 18000 pictures!

When you select the Ap2 Library to convert there is a panel that gives you several selection options re adding in the ability to use the new editing controls with data being converted. Ensure that you set it so no additional support is given - it is very easy and quick to Reprocess any images you want to work with in Ap3 once you need to. This cuts down the amount of work the product has to do when converting.

  • Merging old sequence timeline into project with different sequence settings?

I successfully did this yesterday. But when I tried to replicate my efforts, I got different and unwanted results.
I have an old project created in Pro 2.0. It has a timeline that I want to keep. In the old project, the sequece settings did not match the source clip, so 2.0 overscanned in rendering.
I created the proper sequence setting in 5.5. Then I imported the original sequence from the old project. The first time I did it, it took the old timeline and merged it with the new sequence settings--a perfect result. Today when I try to replicate that effort, it brings in the old timeline, but applies the old settings, resulting the overscanned result.
How, step-by-step, do I get the result I want--an old timeline with new settings????
    Thanks very much!

    Thanks Simon.
Let me clarify. What I'm trying to do is to correct the sequence setting without having to reassemble the whole project.
As I said, I was able to do just that yesterday, but have not been able to duplicate my efforts.

  • Get old Aperture library into iPhoto without need to upgrade Aperture first?

I've my photo libraries in an old Aperture format. I didn't upgrade to Aperture 3, because I didn't get a new Mac until recently. Now with Yosemite my old Aperture app can't be installed anymore (neither old iPhoto). So I've not an old Aperture library file which I'd like to import into the new iPhoto, but I get the dialog that I've to upgrade to Aperture 3 first.
Do I really have to purchase a $80 upgrade to get my pictures out of an old version of Aperture? I'd upgrade to Aperture 3 and continue using it if it wasn't already announced to be discontinued soon. But what to do until the new Photo.app is available some time in 2015, plus who knows whether the announced "will be able to import Aperture libraries" isn't also limited to Aperture 3+ versions?
You see my pickle?! I can't run old Aperture on Yosemite, I can't import my old Aperture library into the new iPhoto and Photo.app isn't available yet. What to do?
The option to run an old OS X via VMWare, import Aperture to old iPhoto and then upgrade to new iPhoto also seems a bit much work.
What I am looking for would essentially be a "Import Aperture 2 library into (new) iPhoto" script/tool/converter.
    Thanks,
    -H

    Crrect - as I said
you can get the original photos out by copying the masters folder and importing to iPhoto
And yes there is no good solution for switching from a outdated software package to a different up to date one - Aperture or pretty much any other software - iPhoto will update all old iPhoto libraries and Aperture will update all old Aperture libraries but iPhoto will not update old Apertue libraries nor will Aperture update old iPhoto libraries

  • I have imported my pictures into aperture, how do I export into jpeg files so i can share files with friends who dont use aperture ?

I have imported my pictures into aperture, how do I export into jpeg files so i can share files with friends who dont use aperture ?

If you want the same export settings on some or all of the images you can select all that have the same export requirements and export them as a group.
If all the images have the same requirements then you can select them all and run the export command.

  • File Sizes Surge with Merger of Aperture an iPhoto Libraries

I merged an Aperture library and an iPhoto library. All went well. However, the resulting file sizes on BOTH new libraries have increased significantly. The iPhoto file size went from ~ 50 gigs to ~144 gigs and the Aperture library went from ~90 gigs to ~ 102 gigs.
I thought I would be able to delete one of the libraries (iPhoto) after the merger, but now that it is so big...I;m not sure what to do.
I can understand the post merger Aperture library getting larger, but why the iPhoto library?
Also, I read that the iPhoto library may contain "originals" and that only versions merged over into the new Aperture (post merger) library. Is that true? If so, what can be done to move over the originals to whicheveer library survives?
    Thanks!

How exactly did you merge? And what are your Aperture and iPhoto versions?
Why are there two new libraries after merging an Aperture library and an iPhoto library? Merging two libraries should create one merged library, or am I missing something?
WIth Aperture 3.3 or later and iPhoto 9.3 or later:  If you want to merge an iPhoto library into an Aperture library, you would open the Aperture library and then use "File > Import > Library" and select the iPhoto Library to merge the iPhoto Library into your Aperture library.
The Aperture library should increase in size to accomodate your iPhoto images, but the size of the imported iPhoto library should stay the same.
Also, I read that the iPhoto library may contain "originals" and that only versions merged over into the new Aperture (post merger) library. Is that true? If so, what can be done to move over the originals to whicheveer library survives?
That will depend on the iPhoto and Aperture versions you are using. With any Aperture version later than Aperture 3.3. both the originals and edited versions will be imported into Aperture, when you import an iPhoto library as library to merge it into the Aperture library. Only if your iPhoto library is referenced (the original image files not included in the iPhoto library), then Aperture will also reference these original files and not import them into the Aperture library.  YOu can consolidate the originals later in aperture.
But we need to know, how exactly you merged your libraries to be able to understand, how both libraries increased in size.  Did you not use "File > Import > Library"?

  • Merging multiple Aperture libraries

I would like to merge multiple Aperture libraries. Some images occur in more than one library. Does anyone know what the merge process does with duplicated images? Thanks for any tips

To me it's helpful to clarify what is meant by "duplicated images".  To the Library, every Image is a record in a list of records.  Some of these records may be identical.  Being identical means they contain the same information.  They are usually not linked in any way.  Often, there may be Images that look identical, but have different information or other differences (size, date-stamp, file format of the Original, a copyright notice, bit-depth, etc., etc.).  The computer does not know that Images look alike.  To it, every Image is a record, and that's that.
Merging Libraries combines the two lists of Images into one bigger single list of Images.  If one of the merged Libraries was created by "export as Library" from the other, Aperture will attempt to "merge" each Image from the second Library that matches an Image from the first Library into one Image in the merged Library.
Other than that, no attempt to eliminate duplicates is done during a merging of Libraries AFAIK.
As Léonie says, this is still new, and you should _at least_ make back-ups prior to doing anything, and are advised to try anything with smaller test Libraries before committing your main Library to any action.

  • Merging iPhoto & Aperture libraries

I want to merge iPhoto & Aperture libraries but I have three questions before I do this:
    1. Both programs have different events and albums organizing my photos. When I merge the libraries, does each program keeps the photos organized the way that are right now or does it also merge events and albums? After I merge the libraries, when I creat an album or an event in either program, does the event or album appears in both programs?
    2. After I merge the libraries, when I import photos from a camera or the iPhone, does it automatically refreshes in either programs and the new photos appear in both programs? I guess this is a dumb question but I just wanna make sure.
    3. I Have an external HD backing up my aperture library in a vault but my iPhoto library is not set to back up automatically like the vault thing in aperture. After the merging, now the vault is going to back up the whole master library?
I appreciate the help and guidance with this questions.
    Proto V.
PS: I am mexican so english is my 2nd languaje, I apologize if I commited a gramatic mistake

The key question here is what versions of iPhoto and Aperture do you have?
If you have the latest vesions of both, then merging is as simply as using Aperture's File -> Import -> Library command.
Again, if you have the latest versions of both, thereafter both apps use the same library. So, new photos don't "appear in both programs", they go into the Library and you can use either app to see them.
Yes, after merging the vault will back up the Library.

  • I trashed my Aperture preferences, so now I can open Aperture. The dialog box says Welcome to Aperture. Will I still have my old Aperture Library?

I can open Aperture now, but since it says Welcome Aperture, I just want to make sure my old Library is there still. I don't want proceed until I know my photos are safe. They are backed up on Time Machine and a Cloud service, too, if I need to retrive them. I had a problem where my computer shutdown during a rebuild/repair, but when I re-boot, I couldn't open Aperture. Any advice will help.

I have looked in my Picture folder and see "Aperture Library", but not "Aperture Library.aplibrary". Are they the same?
Have you set the Finder to hide the filename extensions? Then enable the extensions to be shown in the Finder Preferences (Advanced tab):
You could also have hidden the extensionin the "Get Info" panel for the Aperture Library:
Can I open this new "Aperture Library"? If I do open this new "Aperture LIbrary," will my old photo library be there?
If that library only has been created yesterday, it is unlikely, that it will contain your photos. How large is this "Aperture Library"? If it is very small, only a few MB, then it is probably a default library, that Aperture has created, when it could not find your regular library. But if it has several GB, than it can be your Aperture Library - then double click it to open it and see.
If your old "Aperture Library" is not in your Pictures folder, enter ".aplibrary" in the Spotlight searchfield in the upper right corner of your screen.
Does that turn up more libraries?

  • New MBP and Old Aperture

I just purchased a new MacBook Pro. I bought Aperture at version 1.0 Will I be able to install the old Aperture disk and then upgrade?

Should work to upgrade to 1.5.6
If you're planning to buy the upgrade to A2.x, I don't think you even need to install 1.x. but just provide A2 with your legacy serial number.

  • Setting up old Aperture File with my new Macbook Pro?

    Hello:
I installed Aperture and have my old Aperture File on an external drive. I can't seem to figure out how to get this file over to my Aperture now on my laptop.
I also tried restoring from the Vault and for some reason not all the images in the display tab under the main window appear.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

or did you want to move the library from the external to the internal ???
if the latter, just copy it over to where you want and then double click from there to open and make default library ...

  • Merging two Aperture Books

I have tried following all the directions I could find.  Let's call my book files Book1 and Book 2.  I exported Book2 to my mac as "book as library"  This appears to work.   I then highlight Book1 and choose Import library.  I end up with a book called Book2 (1) which is a duplicate of Book2.
Am I doing something wrong?  Is there a way to merge two different books?

Am I doing something wrong?  Is there a way to merge two different books?
It is simply not possible. You can merge two Aperture libraries and move the photos from one book to another, but you cannot move the pages you played out to a different book.
As a work-around you could print one book to PFD or JPEG and then simply add the JPEGS as full page images to the book, but the quality would suffer.
For a full-quality merge, add the photos from the second book to the first, and then copy and paste all texts from the first to the second.

  • Having trouble with images in old Aperture Library?

I have and old Aperture Library that I updated.  I opened a project in that library and tried to export some photos to my desk top.  I got an error message that was a error with about 10 images.  I went back to that same project and now those images are blank with the upside down question mark? That says “Unsupported Image Format”  Any help would be much appreciated!!
    Thanks,
    Jeff Skinner

    Hello Jeff,
I don't undersand that with iphoto? The images are so old I forgot if they were originally iphotos or aperture files.
I saw the "iPhoto Original" keyword attached to one of the images in question. This keyword usually is set for an original master image, when you import from iPhoto.
I cannot find anything special about these imiages???  I noticed that there is no file size for the corrupted files.
If the image format is not supported, then probably Aperture cannot read the file size.
Not sure if the images are managed or referenced?
If these were imported from iPhoto, then they might have been imported as referenced, if you set the "Store Files" selector to "In their current location" on import. That would mean, that the original masters are still in your iPhoto Library, and if you edit them using iPhoto this may break the references to your masters in Aperture.
I think I just located the original imaiges in an old hard drive!
That is good, at least you still have a backup; but did you see the imported, unsupported images in the masters folder of your Aperture Library? It would really help to know the exact condition of the images that are problematic. Or are they not in the library? That would mean they are referenced, but then the exclamation-mark tag in the Browser is confusing - I then would expect an icon with a broken arrow.
It did not happen until I tried to export them though?  What can I do to prevent this from happening futher?
Then Aperture probably did not notice that something was amiss with the images, until it needed to access the master image files for export and noticed that those could not be read. As long as you do not try to export or to edit the images, the Previews are sufficient, but on export the master has to be processed.
The master image files of the other images in the project may be problematic as well - make sure you have a working backup, before you try anything at all with other images in that project.
    Cheers
    Léonie

  • Transferring old iPhoto pictures to new MacBook

I am trying to merge my old iPhoto pictures from a MacBook running OS X 10.5.8 to a new MacBook running 10.7.5
I tried connecting the two computers with a USB cable, I can't seem to get the two to connect when I open finder.

No - merging keeps all versions of the photo , edits, faces and metadata - exporting and then importing keeps selected metadata and one version - either the original or the current version
do what you want but the only way to merge libraries is to use Aperture or iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -
