Merging PDFs in preview

I can't seem to merge PDFs in Preview 5.5.1. Am I missing something. Can someone guide me to an article or let me know how to do this. I've read that you simply open multiple PDFs in the thumbnail and then place one PDF on top of another, but when I try, the two PDFs just wiggle around and change order. If not preview - what program should I use?
Thanks
Doug

In Preview's sidebar, just drag one document on top of (i.e. not above and not below) another, but it sounds as if you're doing that.
Make sure you are doing this in the sidebar:
and make sure they are both PDFs.

  • Use varying page sizes when merging PDFs in Preview?

In 10.5, one could use Preview to merge multiple images or pages into a single PDF. Just open one document, show thumbnails in the sidebar, and drag in any additional items. The additional items could be other PDFs or images (like JPGs, Photoshop files, etc.). The dimensions and page size of the new items were maintained.
For example, I would use this a lot to package website mockups and other designs into a single document to share with clients. The title page could be a different size from the mockups.
In 10.6's Preview, when I drag items into the sidebar, they are added to the PDF, but placed on a page that is the size of the pages already in the document.
For example, I have a couple pages of 8.5x11 in my PDF. Then I drag in an image that is much smaller, but Preview frames it on a white 8.5x11 page, so there are huge white borders around the image.
Is there a way to get 10.6 Preview to behave more like 10.5 in this respect? Thanks!

In Preview's sidebar, just drag one document on top of (i.e. not above and not below) another, but it sounds as if you're doing that.

  • HT4075 Merging PDFs using Preview

I have followed all of the steps and have my PDFs all linked together under the same window in the thumbnails section, but when I save it only saves one document not all of the PDFs together. I have tried exporting as well, same thing. How can I make Preview merge the PDFs and save them as one big PDF? Also, it says to press Save As, but there is no save as. All I can see is File > Close Window, Close Selected PDF Document, Save, Duplicate, Rename, Move to, Export and Revert To. I am using Mountain Lion. Thanks

It would probably have been better to ask a Mountain Lion question in the forum for Mountain Lion instead of the one for Snow Leopard, but I can at least make a couple of suggestions.
Working from the bottom to the top, in Mountain Lion, you have to hold the Option key while selecting the File menu to see the Save As… item.
In the newer versions of Preview, you can have multiple documents in one window, with the thumbnails for all of them in the sidebar. If you grab the thumbnail(s) for the second document and drag it up toward the first, you will see a divider between the two document as the pointer approaches the first and a "+" sign will appear next to the pointer as it crosses into the first document. If you release the mouse button when the "+" is showing, it will merge the two into one document.

  • Cannot merge pdfs using Preview

When I had my OS 10.5 MacBook Pro, I would use the Preview program to merge multiple pdfs into one file. (I learned this from the following QuickTip on the Apple web site: http://www.apple.com/business/theater/mac.html#mergepdfs)
Now that I have upgraded to Snow Leopard, I cannot do this anymore. Yes, I can put one file into the other, but when I go to save it, only one of the files saves. I've tried highlighting both files within the new file's "sidebar," but it still only saves one of the files as a single-page pdf.
Any ideas how I can do this pdf merging??? That was a great feature of Preview!
    TIA,
    hsmom

    Hi,
Snow Leopard has done some changes to that process.
Have a look at this MacWorld article http://www.macworld.com/article/143023/2009/09/combinepdf_snowleopard.html

  • Preview bug - merging pdfs inserts wrong file

I have consistently been able to reproduce this bug. I often merge PDFs using Preview, by dragging a file from the Finder to Preview's thumbnail sidebar open to the document to which I am merging.
And what happens is that when I do that, the file that actually gets inserted is a file that I had previously done that operation with.
    In other words:
I want to merge file A with file B, so I open file B with Preview, ensuring the thumbnail sidebar is visible. I drag file A from the Finder and drop it on top of file B's thumbnail. Hey Presto, the files are merged, and I save and close, and then delete file A from the Finder.
I then go to merge file C with file D. Repeating the process, when I drop file C from the Finder to the Preview sidebar, file A is what actually gets inserted into file D.
It's like it's cached and doesn't get overwritten by file C during the second process.

I haven't tried to reproduce the issue, but what happens if you quit and relaunch Preview before doing the second merge?

  • Preview – merge PDFs lost?

    Hi,
I can't seem to find a good way to merge PDFs using Preview like I could before upgrading to Snow Leopard. Is this function actually gone, or is it just hiding from me? Before, I could just open up the Sidebar in Preview, drag and drop another PDF where I wanted it, and it was done. But now if I do that the newly added PDF will show up in the Sidebar, but when I Save As, it doesn't save with the new PDF. What's the deal? Thanks for any insight!

If there is only one page, drag the next file on top of the page, rather than below it. The icon will become a booklet icon which you can open, and then you can drag pages into the booklet.
Why does Apple make it so difficult to figure this feature out? In 10.5, I got used to dropping the pages in before or after other pages. Then in 10.6, it seemed to not work. Now, thanks to you, I know the trick.

  • Merging PDF Files in Preview 5 in OS X v10.7 Lion

I recently updated to the OSX v10.7 Lion operating system.  In the previous version I had, I was able to merge two or more PDF files in Preview just by dragging the thumbnail.  However, in the Lion version, it is not allowing to drag one PDF file into another.  It just opens them as different files in the same preview window.  I need to know if someone can help me figure out how to merge these files 'cause I can't send ten different PDF files to my client.  Thank you so much for any help you can provide.

    Use 'Automator (applications > automator.app).
    Choose 'Workflow'.
Type 'get specified finder' in the little search box.
From the list drag 'get specified finder files' into the the panel on the right. Click 'options' and check 'Show this action when the workflow runs'.
Next type 'combine pdf' in the search box, and drag 'Combine pdf pages' into the panel on the right underneath the previous one.
Save the workflow to your apps folder.
Whenever you want to merge any pdfs, click on the workflow. Add the pdfs to the dialogue box, click 'Run' in the top left of Automator. To find the resulting merged pdf, click 'Results'.
This is no doubt a clumsy way of doing it, but it works.

  • Merge pdf files in preview

I must be missing something. I've read the instructions for merging pdf documents in Preview, but it's just not working. Wants me to "duplicate" a file or something. This seems very un-Mac-like. I get 2 documents open, drag the thumbnails from one into another, one at a time, and then try to "Save As". Can anyone tell me what I might be doing wrong? I'm using Lion.
    TIA!

This is because of the new versioning.
As I recall this is what I did.
Start with a new, blank preview page and then drag the other pdfs onto the blank form.
I am not sure how I created the new blank page. I may have created it with Adobe first.
It seems that one cannot use Preview alone to open a new blank pdf.
Now when you click Save you should be asked for a new name.
Otherwise, I think that preview will overwrite one of the other pdf files with the new files.
It's a bit confusing - I suggest experimenting with a few "scrap" pdf files first.
I wish Apple would put back the old "Save as" function. It is so much clearer and intuitive than the current scheme where often one has to search for the location of the file once it goes away.

  • Problems merging PDF's with Preview

    Hi there,
I'm on 10.8.5, with Preview Version 6.0.1 (765.6).  I have followed all of the steps to merge pdf's. In the title bar of the document it says there are two pages.  Then I save (there is no save as command) and it only saves one page.  Is there something I'm missing or is this a bug?
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks
    Shaynee

"Try showing them as thumbnails, then Edit/Select All, and then Export as PDF.
Tried this several times as well as every other export/save option. View as thumbnails in two separate documents and successfully see 1 document with 2 files listed in the left pane.
And though the export displays a completed progress bar just before it disapears and the file is created where I pointed, there is still only the bottom page of the the two thumbnails in the newly created file.

  • Merging two PDFs in Preview?

How can I merge a page from one PDF to another, separate PDF in Preview?

Yes. Open one in Preview and show the sidebar. Then drag the second PDF to the desired location (between pages, at the beginning, or at the end) and then save the results. You can "Save As..." to prevent overwriting the originally opened document as well.

  • Yosemite: Preview Won't Manipulate or Merge PDFs

Using Yosemite 10.10 on 10-18-14 with a Macbook Pro Retina Early 2013, I can't manipulate PDFs using Preview 8.0.  The PDF is not locked, and I have full read/write permission.
I can open a PDF.  I can delete a page in a PDF. I can rotate a page in the PDF.  However, I CAN'T move a page from one location to another within the same PDF.  I CAN'T merge the contents of one PDF into another PDF.
When I try to move a page within a PDF a "hole" opens up between the pages (that slid apart to allow the page to be moved there) but the page is not moved to that location and the "hole" does not close up until the PDF is closed and reopened.  When I drag the source PDF to the desired position inside the thumbnail on the left side of the recipient PDF, the thumbnail pages slide apart and the green + appears over the icon for the source PDF confirming that I want to add the PDF in that location.  However when I release the mouse, the document springs back to its former location without being added.  Unlike in an attempted page move, however, the thumbnails slide back together.
I have to manipulate PDFs all the time, and if anyone can tell me what I'm (suddenly) doing wrong, I would be most appreciative.  I have Adobe Acrobat, so I can work around the problem, but Acrobat is slow and difficult to work with.  Thanks in advance.

    Hello!
I too am having problems with Preview 8.0 in Yosemite. Like others, I can not add a page or merge two PDFs or move pages around. VikingOSX indicated that this was no longer functionality in this version and that we should employ better PDF programs. Excuse me for saying so but that can't be true. The HELP system clearly indicates that you should be able to add a pdf file via the Edit > Insert > Page from File command. This command does exist in the UI. I can execute the command and navigate to the correct file and select it but nothing happens. It makes no sense that Apple would remove the ability to combine pdfs together. This seems like a legitimate bug. I will file a bug report.
Also, Preview is no longer meant to be just a viewer. It has really good capabilities for modifying PDFs that I use every day.
If anyone finds a solution to this problem I would appreciate it if you could let me know.
    Thank you for reading.

  • Merge PDF documents into one PDF document

    hi expets
I have got an question. I have several different PDFs.
Four main PDF and 20 PDFs which are ment as attachements.
Via ABAP code i would like to chose dynamicaly several of those attachement PDFs and merge them within one of the main forms.
So as result you will have one pdf which you can see in the print preview and send as one to the spool.
    But is this possible?
    Kindly hear from you!

    Hi *,
Add below  parameter values in report program in FP_JOB_OPEN function module.
    SFPOUTPUTPARAMS-BUMODE = 'M'.
    SFPOUTPUTPARAMS-PREVIEW = ' '.
Call different adobe forms without using FP_JOB_CLOSE.
    It will merge pdf files.
    At the end, call FP_JOB_CLOSE.
and then get the merged pdf as FPFORMOUTPUT-pdf.
    Thank you.

  • Merging PDFs and then saving them as one file in Leopard

Would someone please tell me how I can merge PDF files into one PDF file. I have been able to drag and drop them together in Preview. I would love to be able to save the merged files into one file. Any ideas. I have read a lot online about this possibility in Snow Leopard, but I can't seem to save the dang file.
    Help.

Open the first PDF. Open the tray so you can see the file on the left. Drag the other PDFs onto the first file in the tray. You can't just drag into the tray window anymore, you have to drag onto the file itself to merge. Save the file with new name.
Macmost has a good podcast on this subject that came out about a week ago. Shows other PDF tricks with Preview as well.

Does the Preview app in Tiger have the ability to merge PDF files by just dragging&dropping from one to the other. Or is this only in Leopard?

  • Merging PDFs

I think I remember that Preview in 10.5 has the ability to merge pdf files, but I can't figure out how to do it. Can somebody tell me?

I do not find any merge facility in Preview, although you can add blank pages to a document, then use copy/paste to copy from another document. A better solution is to use an application that can do what your want - PDF Clerk Pro and/or PDF Pen Pro can merge PDF documents. PDFMergeX only merges documents but it is also freeware. Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
