Merging photos from several libraries

I have an iPhoto library for myself and my wife as wel. l also have libraries form work on a different computer. I also moved one to a backup hard disk.
I now would like to combine all my photos into one library.
I’m looking at 5 or 6 libraries in three locations totaling about 12,000 pics.
Also there are a lot of duplicates to deal with after the merge.
Is there an easy way to get that done?

Welcome to the users' forum.
First, you must avoid the temptation to open the libraries and copy photos from one to the other.
There's not really an easy way but you can prepare a workflow that will simplify the task. I would suggest exporting the photos and importing them to your chosen library. I don't know if you have done a lot of work on your photos that you want to preserve eg keywords, titles, albums etc. When you export you have the choice of preserving titles, keywords and location information (if any). You can only do this if you are prepared to export as JPEG (or TIFF). You may prefer to export in the original format but this will lose keywords etc. Also keep in mind that many of your photos may originally had the same name so can't be exported in bulk unless you use a new sequential number.
Consider some of these ideas and try out a few albums or rolls and import them again to get a feel for the procedure. Remember you don't need to delete any of the photos being transferred until you are happy that everything is working to your satisfaction.
Let us know how you get on and if we can help any more.

  • Merging photos from rebuilt libraries, external storage and Finder/Pictures

I have my iPhoto program on my hard drive. Also, I have a petition on an external hard drive for photos and in it are several rebuilt libraries that I have saved on it. On my internal hard drive on my iMac,I have photos in Finder/Pictures and photos which I have imported to iPhoto.
How can I gather all of these photos together, eliminate the duplicates and import them into iPhoto?
Also, in the Photo library which I am currently using on my iMac, I have albums which I originally created but now are empty of the photos I placed there after rebuilding the library.
Is there a way to restore those photos without individually replacing them in the appropriate album?
Thanks for your help, suggestions, and patience.
    Vernon

You can use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager to merge multiple libraries into a new, 3rd library and set it to eliminate duplicates.
Otherwise you would have to export each Event of all libraries (except for the one you plan on importing the photos into) to a folded on your HD with the option to include all of the metadata. Then import those folders into the final library. This will give you the same events (if the folders are named for the Event the photos came from) from the old libraries. A lot of manual work.
However, neither method will preserve albums, slideshows, books and other keepsakes except for those in the destination library.

  • I have photos from several cameras of the same event, how do I combine them?

I have photos from several cameras of the same events.  How can I sort them together, three pics of the same horse from three cameras side by side; I can't move pics from one camera source to another in a folder.

Languare is critical since it is all we have to communicate with
Folders in iPhoto do not hold photos - folders hold only other folders or albums
If you are speaking of events then you simply merge the events (drag one onto another or select two or more and use the merge events command - for the photos to be "side by side" the three camera's time/date setting will have to be identical as photos will be sorted by time/date - if they are not you can correct by selecting the photos in an event (before merging) and using the adjust time and date command or you can make a smart album for the camera and select the photos and use the adjust time and date command

  • How do I merge photos from one album to another on my iPad

How do I merge photos from one album to another.  How do I delete, remove albums.

If they are albums that you've synced from your computer then they are removed by re-connecting to your computer's iTunes, de-selecting them on the Photos tab, and re-syncing - albums and photos that you've synced can't be deleted (and albums can't be merged) directly on the iPad.
If they are albums that you've created directly on the iPad then you should be able to delete them on the iPad via the Edit button at the top left of the album selection screen. You can also copy more photos into (via the Edit button when within an album), and delete photos from, those albums.

  • What isa the best way to reorganize my photos from multiple libraries to a single library

I need to reorganize my photos from multiple libraries to a single library. What is the best way to do this?

The only way to do this while preserving all your metadata, versions and so on is with the paid version ($20) of
    iPhoto Library Manager

  • Sync photos from two libraries

How can I sync photos from two libraries? after syncing one of them I close that library and open the other and choose to select certain albums and the warning pops up that if I sync the current selection all others will be replaced with the current library. So it appears that you can't add to the ATV hard drive additional photos from the second library without losing the content you already have from the first one.Is streaming the answer, and if so how do you do that?

You can't sync more then 1 library with the apple tv. Your only option would be to sync with one and stream with the other. Just make sure on the second library that you set it to share and then go to computers on the apple tv and select the shared library. ATV will give you a code that you will set on the second library when you have itunes open. Put in the code and you will be able to stream

  • Best way to merge photos from different macs

What is the best way to merge photo libraries from different macs onto one mac?

The only way to merge Libraries - versions, metadata etc - is with the paid ($20) version of iPhoto Library Manager
Other than that you will need to export from one Library to the Finder and then import to the other. This won’t get all the Metadata (for instance, Faces) and won't get the Versions either.

  • Looking to transfer photos from several iphoto 6 sources to new iphoto

    Hey all,
So I just got a new macbook pro. i want to transfer all my previous photos to my new iphoto. heres the thing i have prob 3-4000 pics that are saved in 4 seperate places (all by simply copying/ backing up the Iphoto Library folder)
    I have:
1 iphoto library folder on my old powerbook
    1 on my G5
    1 on a firewire drive
    1 on another firewire drive.
these are all iphoto 6 libraries
i dont care about transferring over the library files or saving the albums because only 1 of these libraries actually has some orginized albums and i'm going to be going thru and reorganizing all once i get them in the same library.
Can i simply just drag all the "originals" folders to the new iphoto's originals folder?
or do i have to drag the contents (photos/vids) of these originals folders into iphoto?
again i just want the pics in my new iphoto. i dont care about albums and i never did any retouching or editing in iphoto
thanks in advance for any suggestions!!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
You need to import the contents of the Originals folders of these various libraries to the new iPhoto.
Can i simply just drag all the "originals" folders to the new iphoto's originals folder?
No. iPhoto is a database. It cannot see anything that has not been imported. Also, since iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
So, you may need to read this:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
    *For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Syncing photos from several folders in iTunes to iOS devices

    Hi,
I am trying to set up iTunes to sync photos on my MacBook Pro to my iOS devices (first of all, my iPhone 5, but to my iPad mini and iPad 3 as well).
I happen to store my photos in a folder with a several level hierarchy: in the main photo folder there are folders for each year, in those there are folders for each event, and in those there is a separate folder for the subset of my photos that I want to be synced (photos that I like the most).
Apparently, iTunes allows to select folders for syncing in only 1 level of hierarchy.  That would mean that one must not have separate folders for each year, nor for good and not-so-good photos - only one basic photo folder, and inside that folders for each event, and so every photo from selected events would be synced.
I tried a workaround: I created a specific new folder especially for syncing purposes, and I defined Smart Folders inside it.  These Smart Folders would contain my desired photos virtually.  (I didn't want to make physical copies of my photos, because I did not want to waste disc space.)  But then it turned out that iTunes does not recognize photos in Smart Folders, only those in physical folders.
Can you give me a solution, how could I sync photos in iTunes to my iOS devices, if these photos are not in folders that are only one but more level deep in hierarchy?
    Thanks a lot,
    Mikulka

It works the way it works. I'd recommend you create a separate folder for any photos that you want to put on your devices, with one layer of subfolders as separate albums. Each device can sync with a different selection of those album folders.

  • Why wont Photoshop Elements 11 merge photos from Lightroom 4?

I'm having problems with automatically merging photos in Photoshop Elements 11 from Lightroom 4. I do my editing in LR4 and when I wish to merge photos (either into a pnaorama or HDR image) all that happens is that PSE11 opens, nothing else. I go through the 'Edit in..' option and click on the desirep option. I can send individual images to edit in PSE11 bun not merge.
I am running windows 8. I have set the external editing software to PSE11. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all the software. But still I'm having no luck with the programs working together and doing what I ask of them.  Why is this?

Yes you can open multiple images into PSE from LR. But actually there is no great advantage in using Lightroom for Photomerge as the export copies are already created in the Library but the saved copy will be the merged version which LR will know nothing about, and which would need to be imported to the library separately.
I would personally start from Expert Mode in PSE11 and then use:
    File >> Open
Navigate directly to the folder and select the images you want and click open.
If they are raw files they will open up in camera raw and will already have the light room adjustments included, if the metadata has been saved to file in Lightroom.
Click select all (top left) and then ensure the image depth is set to 8 bits using the drop down menu at the bottom of the dialog. Then click the open images button (bottom right) to send them all into PSE.

  • Moving photos from several computers to iPad

I have photos on different computers and I want to sync some of them to my iPad. Being locked to ONE computer is a nuisance. It feels very oldfashioned to carry around photos on a USB memory. How can I do this in an easy way? I would also like to find an easy way to sync the iPad with music files on several computers. How can I do that?

I don't think that you can sync photos from more than computer at a time. In terms of music this article might help http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1202

  • Merge photos from starter edition to another edition on same computer

I have both Adobe Photoshop Album 3.0 starter edition and Adobe 2.0 Photoshop on my PC. I accidentally downloaded some pictures from my camera onto the 3.0 edition (I primarily use the 2.0 edition). Is there any way to move the pictures in the 3.0 album to my 2.0 album (same computer)?

    Hi Claire,
The photos are downloaded to your hard disc and hence you can import them again into 2.0 album. Select the File->Get Photos->From Files and Folder opttion, browse to the folder where the images have been downloaded and import them intp 2.0 album.
    Hope this helps.

  • Merging pictures from several iphoto libraries in aperture

I have 5 separate iPhoto libraries becaue of the large amount of picture. Now I want to consolidate all 5 star ***** rated pictures of all 5 iPhoto libraries into one "Aperture Project".
When I switch Libraries in Aperture I can's see the Library anymore where I want to consolidate some of the photos.
There should be a way that I can drag pictures for one iPhoto Library to a Project folder in Aperture, switch to a differen iPhoto Library, drag more photos to the Project folder in Aperture, switch to a third iPhoto Library, drag more photos ......   etc.
    Is this possible in Aperture?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

There should be a way that I can drag pictures for one iPhoto Library to a Project folder in Aperture, switch to a differen iPhoto Library, drag more photos to the Project folder in Aperture, switch to a third iPhoto Library, drag more photos
You open one library in iPhoto and one library in Aperture, and even drag  images from iPhoto to Aperture, but unfortunately this way you can only drag the previews of the edited versions to Aperture, so you would lose image quality.
Why not open each iPhoto Library in turn in Aperture, export  your five***** rated images a a new Aperture Library, and then merge this new library into your main Aperture library by importing it? This way you will import the original master image files as well as the adjustments and ratings and don't lose any image quality in the transit.

  • We want to create a photobook using iPhoto 11. Photos from shared libraries keep disappearing. Why?

Photos sent to a photobook from a shared library disappear. Why and how can we "save" the photobook to enable further work on it as a later date.

    Yes.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • Accessing music and photos from shared libraries in imovie and other apps

ihave a problem that i'm not sure is solvable. i have a mac mini that i use to hold all my music in itunes, photos in iphoto and share this with my other mac by turning on the sharing in itunes and iphoto. this means on my other mac, i can access music and photos using the shared music and photos facility in those programs. however, when i want to add music or photos into imovie using the media tab in imovie on my other mac, it doesn't show the shared libraries. i also have the same problem in final cut pro. is there anyway to make these programs see shared libraries of photos of music that sit on another mac on the network?

    Mac on Andy,
If you copy the photos you wish to use to your iPhoto local library you'll then have access in to them in the media pane of iMovie.
However, iTunes will not allow you to do the same thing with songs.
As a workaround you could enable File Sharing and then mount the mini as a server. In the Finder you'll need to then rummage around in the mini's iTunes library to find the tracks you need, but it should work.
