Merging roads with added text in illustrator CS5

Please help,
I need a way to merge roads with text added in illustrator. I've tried compound paths but it won't allow text to be added.
I've attached an .ai file

With Butt Caps, the strokes of the branch roads will always end inside the through road (if their end points are placed on top of the through road path (Smart Guides say path). And with the second stroke applied at group level it just follows the outer shape as shown in the first OP image. If you hide the Type paths, you can also add new roads and drag them into the basic path group, then create a Type path from a copy.
You can move matching Anchor Points about together.
Adjusting the corresponding Handles is more tricky, but you can:
5) Lock the Type path (group) and drag the Handle of the Road path to the desired position and unlock the Type path (group);
6) Drag over both Anchor Points then drag the Type path Handle to coincide with the Road path Handle (Smart Guides say handle when you are there).
You will probably have to repeat 6) once or maybe twice or more, but it gets easier the closer you are.
Edit: Hi Steve. No frost at night, so I have just stopped carrying our new star magnolia inside every night; now it has a temporary fence to keep the roe deer outside snapping distance.

I'm designing a map in Illustrator CS5.
Does anyone know of a way to merge 2 paths (roads) which have text attached, so they seamlessly blend together.
I've tried using a compound path but this doesn't work with text added.
I need to be able to easily change the roads direction/shape without having to use different layers.

An appearance workaround at the group level may help, but without seeing how your roads and type are built cannot really offer any help. Building maps with overlapping graphics all on one layer can be difficult to work with.

This is most likely an issue with Apple's iOS Mail program's.
I think you are opening your modified PDF in Apple built-in PDF Preview. Apple's code does not properly draw the comments, but if you look at the PDF in virtually any other PDF application that isn't just using Apple''s code, or on any desktop computer, you will see the comments you've added.

Problem with embedding fonts in Illustrator CS5

I have just installed Illustrator CS5, and have tested creating a PDF document based on one of my existing files, as well as a new file.
When I open these PDF documents in Adobe Acrobat Pro 9, I am told that Acrobat cannot access one of the embedded fonts (Korinna BT).
I have had no issues with embedding this font in Illustrator CS4, and (strangely), when I open these files in other PDF viewers (Preview and PDFPenPro), they report no issues.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?
I have removed and reinstalled the font in question, and tested/verified that the font is OK - but still not joy.

The error message I get is:
"Cannot extract the embedded font 'MVZTIW+KorinnaITCbyBT-Regular'. Some characters may not display or print correctly."
When I check the fonts in the PDF in "Document Properties" in Adobe Acrobat the following is shown:
"KorinnaITCbyBT-Regular
     Type: TrueType
     Encoding: Ansi
     Actual Font: Adobe Serif MM
     Actual Font Type: Type 1"
It seems that Illustrator is adding some strange "code" ('MVZTIW') to the beginning of the font, which means the actual font can't be found and extracted.

Problem with page size using Illustrator CS5

I am using Adobe Illustrator CS5. I have created a multi-layered document that is 8.5 x 11 inches. In looking at the document on the screen, it looks like the proper size, and if I were to print it out, it looks correct. However, when I export it as a TIF file, the size of the document has changed to be much wider than 8.5 inches. What is the problem?

This is a bit off topic, but if you are sending this to a commercial printer, a PDF would be better. If you need to send a tiff for some reason, don't forget to include the bleed.

Problem with black text in InDesign CS5

Hi,
I just got an information from my printer that there is a probem with some text in a PDF files which I've sent to them: they appear in 4 colors. I've exported the file with rich blacsk, for printing (best quality print). Any idea why this might have happened?

need more information about the file and how the PDF was made.
is the text that the printer is concerned with:
* text composed in the indesign file; or
* text within an advertisement or graphic made by yourself or a third party?
prior to making the PDF, did the OP check the separations using the separations panel and see four colour blacks, or did the black appear fine?
how was the PDF made? using a default setting (listed in square brackets within the PDF options) or a customised setting made by the OP? what happens when using a different setting, such as [PDFX3 2002] ?
the only way that i can get [black] text from indesign to fault like the OP says is to export the PDF using the [Smallest File Size] setting which would turn the entire job RGB... and create other prepress headaches which the printer would complain about first.
however, if the type was DELIBERATELY made rich black in indesign (e.g. process colours in addition to black to make the black) then i can see why the printer would complain. IMHO I will use rich blacks in solid fills which appear over pictures so that the pictures beneath do not show through and to show a "richer than normal" black... but I WOULD NOT use it on black type under 60pt in size, moreso if the type is thin. Doing so makes it harder to register the colours on-press and isn't normally necessary on body type.

Having trouble selecting text in Illustrator CS5

I've a little problem, when I select text by double click it do not show me the black selection...I don't know why?

If you double-click on a text with the selection tool, the text tool should get selected and the text-cursor is set into the text.
What do you want to do with the text object? Do you want to edit the text (then double clicking is OK) or do you want to push the text around the artboard, then don't double click.

Help with clipping mask in illustrator cs5

In Illustrator CS5, is there any way to get rid of the white space around the artwork when exporting a jpg? I currently use the mask tool, but when you export the jpg, it still shows the white space where the clipped objects are. Is there any clipping mask? Or any way to just make the jpg the size of the artboard, that way any of the objects that fall off the edge of the artboard woldn't be included?

Yes but if I use the artboard, when I export it to a jpg it still has the white space around the outside. Some of my clipped images fall outside the clipping mask so there is white space where the physical images are even though the mask technically covers them up. Thanks

Bug with highlighted text in Illustrator CS6

Hi! I use AI CS6 on a mac book pro Lion 10.7
I got a recurrent bug with the text tool.
When I selct a text sometimes the highlight totally hide my text and it's difficult to edit it! I tried CMD+H and CMD CTRL+H but nothing works, even hide bounding box...
As you can see... It's an issue to read and edit the text properly!
And even in wireframe view CMD+Y texts appear like blocs!
And besides this happen not on evry texts in the document.. I don't have a clue
Very annoying!
Anyone has the same problem? Solution is would be appreciated!

What you have done is, Switched on the "Show Hidden characters" option. U can hide it back by
Clicking on "Type" (Which will be in navigation bar) and see if u have checked in "Show Hidden Characters " if so uncheck it and your problem will be solved.
or you can also use the short cut " Alt+Ctrl+I "

Help with adding text please.

Hi- Im new to the forum and even newer to Dreamweaver.
Ive just started putting a site together using a youtube
tutorial which has gone really well. Ive designed my layout in
photoshop, then put it into imageready to edit/slice, saved as
html- then opened with dreamweaver. I found it easy this way, and
rollovers can be made within the html file in image ready.
Anyway- heres where the problems started- Im trying to add
text over on image. The tutorial I went off said to cut the image
from the Src then paste it into the Bg field so that you can type
over it- but it goes nuts! When you enter at the end of text lines
the image begins to repeat itself underneath and white blocks show
up at the side of the image!?
Is there a way to just easily type over on image- i tried
doing this in image ready which works, but saves the text as an
image, but I want the text the be recognised by google- Im
confused- please help.
I was reading about tables and adding the image as a table
background- but positioning the table in the correct place is
confusing too- told you i was a newbie!

Anyone having trouble with guide snapping in Illustrator CS5?

I was trying to adjust some type and I was pulling guides to adjust widths etc but when I moved a guide to meet the black of the type it would snap a pixel to the left or right of where I was trying to put it. I tried turning off Smart Guides and snap to grid and it still snapped weird. The same thing also happens with objects. I tried to move something down slightly and it would just snap back to its original position or too far down of where I was trying to move it. Anyone else having these issues or know how to fix it? I've used Illustrator for a while and tried several things and nothing seems to work.

You probably have "Align objects to pixel grid" turned on. It's new in CS5 and it's the default setting when you create a new file. Once a file is created in that mode, you can turn it off by selecting your objects and unticking the option in the Transform Panel. You can turn the option on or off when you create a new document.

Problem with adding text to a syntax document

Hello,
I am trying to write an editor with syntax highlighting option.
The syntax document works fine but on a slow computer
after loading a huge document it is impossible to write fluently.
I think the method highlightKeyword() is not the problem because it highlights still only one line.
The problem seems to be the rootElement.Has anybody an idea how to make the rootElement faster
working?
I also tried to use threads (such as http://ostermiller.org/syntax/editor.html) for inserting text, but then the document is highlighted very slowly.
Can anybody help me?

I don't think the root element is the problem. Syntax highlighting is just plain slow for a large file. Here is an example, you can use for comparison purposes, that does [url http://www.discoverteenergy.com/files/SyntaxDocument.java]syntax highlighting. It is very slow when loading large files into the text pane, but works reasonably when modifying the contents of the text pane.

Processing multiple files in a directory and merging them with sample text

I'm trying to use automator (or applescript, or cmd line) to perform a repetitive action on around 5,000 html files.
Here's the problem, can anyone help with the solution.
Sample text is in a file called sample.txt
I want to add the sample txt content to every file in a directory of my choice.
so the script would need to.
1. work it's way through the directory content.
2. For each file it would append the content of the sample.txt and re-save the file to the original file name.

sorry but in your first message you said you wanted it at the end of the file. also, you didn't really answer my question. an html file in text form usually starts with <html><head>... (it can have other junk there too)
and ends with ...</body></html>.
how do you want to handle that?
cycling through files is not a problem.
if you are using shell script action you can do the following:
1. get specified finder items (put the folder with your html files in there)
2. get folder content
3. run shell script (pass input as arguments)
for f in "$@"
do
#your shell script here
done
In the above "$@" is treated as the ambient folder from step 1 and f as the unix path of an item in that folder.

Photo directly to a note with added text?

I'd like to be able to take a photo with my camera, add text and save it on my iPhone so that it is easily accessible.
I have Things for the Mac and iCal obviously but would like to do this in any way possible.

Can I save different preferences with different workspaces in illustrator CS5?

I am wondering if I can save different preferences through workspaces? Or if this cannot be done I was wondering if it is possible to script a particular set of preferences for a computer. The purpose would be to make certain all preferences are set identically on each computer. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I would save it as EPS (version Illustrator 3). This should be compatible to almost any software that takes EPS.
