Merging shapes in Visio 2010

Is it possible in Visio 2010 to merge shapes? i.e. union, combine, etc. as detailed at http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/visio/HP010254151033.aspx
With the ribbon interface, there's obviously no Shape menu, and I have not been able to locate anything similar. Searching this forum, the internet and the built-in help does not yield any results. Is it possible this feature has been removed from the 2010 version?
Thanks.
Colin

Sadly this is just symptomatic of the hole down which MS applications are dropping. The new menu layouts are generally an unmitigated disaster. No, they’re not better organised, they are simply different so that people can no
longer find things. I have yet to find *anyone* who likes the new menus. IMHO Office peaked at the 2003 version and despite nice additions since, the complete mess of the UI means an overall detraction from the products.
This is nicely demonstrated by ‘Shape Design’ being in the Developer tab and by default hidden. Quite what bit of mind-bending logic thought that was an appropriate home for commonly used drawing tools?
And as has been pointed out, the help system is now a mess. In this case ‘combine’ and ‘union’ yield nothing, but it’s the same in the rest of Office. No longer a well organised help system, with say in Excel functions neatly
cross-referenced so you can find the right function by following a trail. In its place a scrape of web content, some of which is good, some not so, but with any form of real help system now submerged.
I saw a great post on another MS forum where someone did some simple maths of the number of Office users in his corporation, their cost to the company, and each being stalled for 10 minutes trying to find where things have been
moved to. I think it worked out at a $25M cost to the corporation, and a 10 min stall would be very very conservative as Office is now a complete re-learning exercise.
So sorry guys, Office starting with 2007 is just a complete disaster and people should be fired. You wonder why people don’t want to upgrade their software and move from XP and Office 2003?
This is one of the primary reasons. They have products that do all they need *and which they can use*. If people cannot use new versions due to ‘improvements’, then they are worthless. In fact worse than worthless, they are actually
costly in the lost time and productivity.

  • Visio 2010 Link a Stencil to Telnet

    Good morning everyone,
I have been searching Google for two days now on how to link a Visio 2010 Stencil to Telnet so that when you hold control and click the stencil it brings you to the telnet login prompt for that router or switch.
I went to insert hyperlink, then chose local file, and linked to telnet.exe for starters. When I ctrl+click on a stencil I get a security warning asking if I want to continue; I clicked yes, but nothing happened. For kicks, I even tried clicking No and
    still nothing happens.
I then tried creating a shortcut to telnet and pointing the hyperlink to that local file with no luck.
Lastly I wrote a .bat file and tried to get the .bat file to launch telnet to my router/switch, and that works if I directly open the .bat file but does not link from Visio.
Does anyone know how I can simply make Visio 2010 so that I can click on the stencil and it auto opens telnet prompt allowing me to login to that device?
    Thank you

The technique the example uses requires modifications to the shape (thus making them unique on the page) and the code then calls an executable that accepts command line options and enters the appropriated operands to the call (ip address, port, etc.).
This is the 'easy' way to accomplish calling the telnet session. Be aware that as of Win7 calling command line executables via a browser was modified to make it more difficult.

  • Where are the auto recovery files stored for Visio 2010?

I have auto recovery set for every 5 minutes.  I have been working on a file that has been saved several times a day.  Today when just moving a shape Viso 2010 crashed after I had been working on the file for over 2 hours.  Auto recovery popped
up every 5 minutes indicating it was saving the file.  After the crash the ony file I could find was the file as it was when I first opened it this AM.  None of the work done today was saved.
Did auto recovery completely fail?  Where can I look for the auto recovery file?
I have not done a reboot because I am afraid that if the file exits it will be gone for sure if I reboot.  Any suggestions are welcome.
There must be a temp file or something that I can look for but not sure what the extension would be or the location.
    Hopefully someone here can help.

How do I know? You state the the auto-save file extension is .vxd - that's the Visio document XML format.
You can change this in File -> Options -> Save
As for the crashes, are there any messages when a crash occurs?
Check that the video drivers you have are the latest, try a different screen resolution to see if that changes anything and turn off or change any screen accelerators.

My mistake - the file format is .vsd - standard visio format

  • How to merge cells in Visio 2013

Hi im created a grid in visio
i want to merge some cells in table
    How to merge cells ?
    Thanks

    Hi,
As far as I know, the Grid is shape in Visio, we could not merge the cells like Excel. Please try the workaround:
Select the cells that need to merge>Format the shape> Choose no line
Select the cells> right click> group
    Hope it's helpful.

  • Protect a Visio 2010 Drawing

Is there any way to password protect a Visio 2010 drawing so that unauthorized users cannot make changes?

    Hello,
As far as I know, Visio does not have any feature like Word's "Protect Document" which forces a prompt for a password. There is a very limited protection feature, please see this topic for Visio 2010 describes the functionality:
    https://support.office.com/en-ca/article/Prevent-or-allow-changes-to-shapes-e65decf4-0eed-4fd6-a7d9-b286abcbc7eb
BTW, this request may be done via some VBA code.
    Hope it's helpful.

  • Changes from Visio 2010 to 2013 - highlighting entire line drawing document with text fields and changing line colors

I work with very large visio drawings that are basically line drawings (network drawings) with text boxes indicating equipment location. We work in future and current drawings, future has colored lines indicating connection type and objects have text in
them that indicate if they are new by having red text. Current drawings have all black lines and black text.
Here's my dilemma, previously I would Ctrl+A and then change all text and all lines to black in Visio 2010, everything would change no problem. In Visio 2013 every text box now get's a black border around it, I've tried selecting all text boxes at once
and trying to remove the line but no luck.
These drawings are HUGE and it takes me a good hour just to change between future and current where previously it took me seconds. I have many coworkers and we're all experiencing he same issue with the move to 2013.
Is there a macro or some vb script I can utilize to select all text boxes and remove the black outline?
    Hope you can help!

    try this macro
    Sub Simple()
Dim sh As Shape, counter As Integer
    ActiveWindow.SelectAll
    For counter = 1 To ActiveWindow.Selection.Count
    Set sh = ActiveWindow.Selection(counter)
    If Len(sh.Text) > 0 Then sh.Cells("Geometry1.Noline").FormulaU = "IF(LEN(SHAPETEXT(TheText))>0,1,0)"
    Next
MsgBox "All text borders set invisible"
    End Sub
if in your drawings you have only lines and text label (NOT rectangles, circles and other shapesconteined text for example) this macro can help !

  • Adobe PDFMaker doesn't convert layers from Visio 2010

I'm wondering if anybody else is seeing this behavior after converting to Visio 2010...
I have a Visio cross-functional flowchart (CFF,) using "swimlanes."  My shapes in this flowchart are organized into various layers withinin Visio.  When I convert to .pdf, the pdf document displays the layers (along with the "eyeball" for selecting & deselecting layers,) but the layers do not "hide" when you deselect them.
This problem occurs when using Adobe Acrobat Pro version 8,9, or X.  The problem occurs no matter which .pdf converter I use, and it makes no difference whether I initiate the conversion from within visio or externally.  The problem occurs in documents built from scratch in 2010, and in documents converted from version 2007.
Interestingly, the problem only occurs when the Visio document is a CFF with swimlanes.  Without swimlanes, all layers can be properly hidden & unhidden in the .pdf.
Can anybody out there successfully display&hide layers in their .pdf generated from a Visio 2010 CFF?  Thanks for any thoughts!  : - )

I had the same problem today using Visio 2010 & Acrobat Pro X, but having used Vision layers before, I did the following:
copied the shapes from the CFF without the frame onto a new blank vsd
the layer properties transferred normally with them
    & discovered that:
the layers could be exported to pdf using the Acrobat Create option (check the preferences first)
all of the layer settings worked fine.
I then transferred the CFF "frame" (with swimlanes) onto the new vsd
the layers seemed to export ok
NONE of the layer settings worked in the pdf.....
The only workaround would be to manually create the frame with rectangles on the copied shapes....
I added these to their own "swimlane" layer & the whole export & result worked fine.

  • MS Visio 2010 | Self-Updating MasterShapes

    Hello TechNet Com,
is there any option in Visio 2010 to "integrate" the MasterShapes, that if i make some changes in my MasterShapes all drawings where i used these MasterShapes get updated with the new shapes? Or do i have to "re-draw" every single drawing
    with the updated Shapes?
I hope you understand what i want to ask, sorry for my english :)
    Looking forward to some answers.
    kind regards

According to your description, my understanding is that you want to update the shapes which based on the master shapes  after you made some changes about the master shapes. Once a shape has been dropped on a page the master for that
shape is placed in the Document Stencil, if changes are made to *that* master then the changes can propagate to the instances on your pages. It does depend on what changes are made to the master though.
We can only make changes to master shapes that are in a new stencil ( Not in the build-in stencil). It won't propagate to the existing shapes on a drawing.
Some 3rd –party addins may require your needs.
    http://visguy.com/vgforum/index.php?topic=965.0
We may also use a macro via VBA code. If you need detail help, please post it in MSND forum.

  • Visio 2010 Walls not joining

Recently a setting has changed in Visio 2010 that is keeping my walls from joining smoothly.  For examply, in the past when I connected interior or exterior walls at a 90 degree angle, the walls would form seamlessly.  Now, when I join the walls
at any angle, the walls are not actually "joined" together  Any help would be appreciated.
    mab86

The "Walls don't join properley" is a bug (yes, I do strongly believe it is a bug) that I have been suffering from for a couple of years. It is a severe problem that is also related to the "UNDO not working" issue. If you encounted this "Walls won't
join" problem, check that the undo function works. I bet it doesn't. The problem is that the walls do snap to gether, and then do glue to each other, but the Wall shape macro that "paints" the wall connection, and correctly miter's the joint doesn't
work. And there's nothing you can do to fix it for that file. It's some how related to the cut and paste function. Like when you cut and paste an "Infected wall" into a drawing, this somehow prevents the Undo feature AND the wall joint maro function.
I've had the same issue on many different computers. I'm surprised it hasn't been encounterd much more out there. It's a real pain, because it means that when you start ensountering the problem, you have to start again with a new, fresh file if you want
wall joining and UNDO function to work. I've looked in all the ADDIN menus, the Visual aids, Can't fix it. It's a nasty bug. I wish it was fixed.

  • Visio 2010 Stardard install error on Windows 8.1 with Office Pro 2013 already installed

Both Visio and Office are 64bit. Visio gives "The language of this installation package is not supported by your system". Tried the LIS "CacheOnly" suggested on a few sites. Causes Installer boot segment fault. Any ideas? Suppose we have
to uninstall Office, install Visio, re-install office? Afraid that will jack up my activations count. Assuming the issue is newer Office is causing the problem.

    Hi,
For the error message, the issue may be caused by some reasons.
The Visio 2010 installation source was damaged.
The installation source for the language pack did not contain all the necessary files.
    Please try the following methods:
    1.Change an installation source.(Click
    here to re-download)
2.Extract all sv-se files necessary for the language pack installation and installed the language pack successfully.
3.Unzip the installation source and double-click the setup.exe to install.
If we had tried the all above methods, we need to try that uninstall Office, install Visio, re-install office.  It’s important to always install earlier versions of Office first.

  • Error when combining Visio 2010 files in Acrobat X Pro

Getting the error message No PDF was created because Acrobat encountered an unidentified error when i try to combine Visio 2010 files into one PDF with Acrobat X Pro.  Ive done this many many times before and it worked fine.  It also works fine on another PC in the office with the same software installed on it.  It just decided one day to quit working.  Ive tried to reinstall both programs without success.  I dont have this issue with any other type of file just Visio 2010 files.  I can go into Visio and convert the file there and then combine it with other files after it has been converted as a seperate PDF file, but that is alot more cumbersome than just drag drop and combine.  How can I fix this?

Did you updates X or have 10.0.0? The updates are required for use with OFFICE 2010.

  • Visio 2010 EMF in word 2007 fonts distorted in PDF

    Hello Participants,
I am experiencing an issue with some Visio images not rendering correctly in my PDF. I created the images in Visio 2010 and saved as EMF. Then I inserted them into my Word 2007 document and generated a PDF.
One of my images renders great, the other one has some font distortion going on. Can anyone point me to some settings that could resolve this issue?
Thanks so much for your help on this matter.
    Z.

My two bits for what they are worth. I used AA9 for the conversion. When I printed to the Adobe PDF printer, the text came out crisp. When I used PDF Maker, I got the same poor fonts view I think you refer too. However, I think it in part goes back to the graphic you used. When I look at the page in WORD 2007, the fonts do not look that good either.
I did observe that it may be the scaling you have done in WORD -- a typical problem with the view of bitmaps. The size of the 1st one is 51% and the 2nd one is 59%. If you can scale the figures in VISIO so that they will be 100% in WORD that may help. What is strange is that printing to the Adobe PDF printer gave a nice result. So it appears to be related to a PDFMaker issue.
An additional factor is that Adobe PDF printer seemed to retain the information as a vector graphic (you can select the individual parts) and yet PDF Maker seemed to convert the graphic to a bitmap. How much of that is Acrobat and how much is MS screwing thing up I do not know (I only say this from past experience with graphics in WORD 2007 that was not a problem with WORD 2003).
As a last resort, I exported the graphics to an EMF and imported into Adobe Illustrator. I think clipped each one into a new WORD file as EMF files (Paste Special) and then ran PDF Maker. This time they came out fine. I think a good part of the problem is how the VISIO files are importing to WORD. That has long been a problem. I my opinion, MS bought VISIO and messed up a great product, causing problems like this.
Maybe some of my comments will help the Adobe team to trace the issue. I know that VISIO files embedded in WORD have long been problems. I do not have a best work flow when using VISIO, but clipping from VISIO does not seem to work well. I hope that some of may wandering analysis here is helpful. I have just been commenting as I have tried things.
