Merging two Apple IDs into one

I created a new Apple ID about a year ago when I changed my email. I didn't realize that my old music was tied to the old account. I can access it if I sign in to the old account, but it's really cumbersome to go back and forth between the two accounts, both of which have a ton of music on them. Is there any way to merge the two accounts into one since I'm the same owner of both accounts?

Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.

I purchased some music on my phone about 18 months ago but never put them on my computer. I dont have that phone now.I guess i could just ignore the old phone data and consider it lost. and move forward...

You can get those songs back at no charge! You don't need the old phone. Follow one of these guides:

When you do that, make sure the song files get added to your current iTunes library on your laptop. Then just stop using the old account.

My husband and I have two different Apple Ids and we are finding extremely difficult when we are trying to download all the music we want into our IPad Air. I made the mistake of creating a new ID not knowing I could have used the main one weve been using for years. How can we go about combing our Apple IDs and just having one account?

You can't merge/combine accounts, nor transfer content between them - content will remain tied to the account that downloaded it.
If both accounts are authorised on the computer's iTunes that you sync to (Store > Authorise This Computer menu option) then you should be able to sync content from both to it.
If some content is currently on a different computer then you should be able to copy it over : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Or you can add it to that computer's library from your backup of your downloads/library (File > Add To Library menu option)

Some time ago I discovered that I had inadvertently created two apple IDs. One that I had used many years ago as a student and then the other I created when I bought my first iPhone. These days I only use the newer account I created however I still own a few songs which were purchased on the older account back when I was a student. I understand that the intention is to stop people from sharing songs by linking to a friends apple ID and downloading their songs, however I am in no way trying to do this. I just want to have access to all the songs that I own on all my machines. I want to listen to songs that I have legitimately purchased on my work machine as well as on my iPhone, my iPad and my home iMac. Surely this is not too much to ask? C'mon apple!! Can't you find a way to either link/merge my two accounts or to verify that they both belong to the same person so I don't run into this problem? I don't think I should have to wait 3 months to get access to songs I have purchased!

What did you do with the Apple IDs? Did you download content with the bad ID? Apple does not provide a way to merge IDs, so if you did things with the bad ID, the only thing you can do is delete that content and download it with the correct one.

Unfortunately, you can't. IDs can't be merged. You'll just have to pick the ID whose itunes account has the most purchased items.

I am considering buying a new hard drive as a 480GB SSD, and using OWC's Data doubler, adding a second HDD, for all the photos and vids i will be collecting through my work in video and photo. I am considering getting an SSHD (SSD+HDD in an SSD form factor) and using this as the second drive. its not much more expensive (like 10$ more) and itgetsme semi-SSD like performance on a mass scale of storage.
HOw can I combine these two drives into ONE partition? 480GB will take awhile to fill up, but this is a future proof wall to use.
I Will eventually invest in an external storage option (2-3 HDDS in one caddy for backups and storing 1080p video all under one roof. depends if the board im using actually has thunderbolt or usb that is fast enough-because of the crappy hdd i cant get it to boot into an OS or go through usb recovery without it freezing. I ahve tried re-applying thermal paste, still doesnt help)

It depends on what you want to do.
You could, for example, have one AppleID for iCloud backup [and therefore message syncing, notes syncing, etc] and a second one for iTunes [music, iBooks, etc].

No, in this case the 2 user accounts with its own Apple IDs would be completely seperated.
If you want to share this things like music and app purchases you will have to to something else.
1. Create two user accounts on your Mac (user A and user B).
2. Create two iCloud accounts just for Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Photos, etc. (one for user A and one for user B):
On your Mac (with Mac OS X Lion or Mountan Lion):
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > iCloud > Create an Apple ID (button in left corner)
On your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch (iOS 5 or later):
Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Add Account > iCloud > Get a free @me.com address and create a new Apple ID

It is not recommended because you shouldn't share your Apple ID account information with other people but you could set up your old Apple ID as an account just for store purchases (Apps, Music, ...) so that everyone of you can manage the purchases in their own library (Access is limited to 10 devices). Therefore you have to setup this "old" ID in Settings of your iOS devices (Settings > iTunes & App Store) and in iTunes on your Mac.
