Merging Two Macs

I have and use two MacBook Pros. One is my personal machine and the other is my work laptop. When travelling, it's a bit of a pain to bring both and I've finally decided to try and consolidate to the two machines and just use one for everything.
Both are running 10.6.3. My question is: is there an easy way to pick merge the documents, music, photos, applications (with licenses), etc. from my personal machine to my work laptop without overwriting anything on the latter? I fear this is just going to be a hunt and peck kind of thing but perhaps you all have suggestions to help.

You might consider creating a new account on the work computer for your personal files. That would assure that the two sets of files would be kept separate, although working with two accounts would introduce other quirks.

Importing/Merging two Mac Mail messages from two laptops

I have created 3 mbox files by archiving the messages on my laptop.
I would like to import them into my existing computer.
If I do this will it erase all the messages I currently have on my existing computer or will it merge them?

As long as Mail can see the files to be imported, and you have read access permissions to them, it doesn't matter.

Probably not, because of permission issues. If you have administrator privileges, however, you can make a copy of the mailboxes to be imported, even if you don't have read access permissions to them. When copying files, the Finder makes the user that copies them the owner of the copy without altering ownership of the original files, which would allow you to import the copy afterwards.

Merging iPhoto Libraries from two Macs

Does anyone have a way of physically combining (not just sharing) iPhoto libraries from two macs? I'm hoping there's an easier, smarter way of doing it than just exporting all of the photos from one and importing them into the other and then just doing the reverse. Is there software that does this smarter? Can get rid of duplicates, etc.?

Do you mean 'sync' libraries
The general term means when two Libraries (A and B) are compared and files in Library A are copied to Library B, while files in Library B are also copied to Library A so that both Libraries are identical.
This is bi-directional copying and you cannot do this with automatically with iPhoto. No Syncing software is capable of parsing the iPhoto Library in this manner. One or both of your Libraries will be damaged if you try this.
The nearest you can get to syncing is to use iPhoto Library Manager to move files/Albums/Events plus assoicated metadata between Libraries. This process cannot be automated.
The Export/Import route will not get your versions.

Merging Inbox/Sent for Mail.app on two Macs?

I send/receive all e-mail via Mail.app; this app is always kept "open" on my iMac and my ISP (in collaboration with GMail) automatically downloads all incoming mail.
When I'm away from home, however, I utilize Mail.app on a MacBookAir. My "home" Mac remains off or sleeping.
Once I've returned home, what procedure will allow the files on my two Macs to become identical?

What kind of accounts are they? If they are IMAP, or can be set up as IMAP (gmail can), you would never have to sync them.
If they are POP accounts, you should set them up to Leave Mail on the Server for a long enough period that both Macs can download the email before it is removed from the server.
As for doing what you want, now, I'm not sure of the easiest way to do that. I would either forward them to myself, or try dragging them into a folder on an external drive and copy that over to the other Mac.

This question has been asked before and the answer, I believe, was NO -- you can't merge multiple .mac or mobileme accounts into ONE.
The problem is I have two .mac accounts and I want one (the one that reflects my name, ie) so I can streamline my apple id and account history.
Does anyone know if this issue has been fixed with the new iCloud Service?
If not, that's SAD, really really SAD. Being a programmer myself, I can't understand why this should be such a big issue unless they screwed up their data model for 'Account'.

Why did you setup more then one AppleID?
Your @me.com account should've been the one and only account you needed. There was absolutely no need to create another AppleID for iCloud. You should've just used the me.com for iCloud.
Your email account (if different to your @me.com email) is nothing to do with Apple.

How to merge two Apple accounts by migration

Hello to you all
My question relates about merging two apple accounts.
Having two accounts is an issue (for instance when you start setting up Family sharing, or trying to get phone calls on your Mac)
As we know, merging two accounts is alas (still ?) not possible.
But it should be possible to address the issue it my migrating data.
As many people, I have two accounts:
Account A: [email protected], with all my purchases (iTunes, apps, machines)
Account B: [email protected], with my calendar, contacts, bookmarks, photos...
The best possible option seems to keep account A:
- Transfer the data from B to A
- Possibly transferring the [email protected] address into A
- Close B
About the data transfer:
- Transferring iCloud documents is easy (using the Finder)
- Transferring contacts, events bookmarks is also easy as they can be exported (ex .VCF or html)
- Transferring Notes can be done by moving the notes from the iCloud list to the On my Mac List
- Transferring Passwords and Photostreams is difficult (No Export solution for KeyChains, No way to transfer ownership of a photo stream)
- I do not know yet about transferring the iCloud email address [email protected] into the [email protected]
So my questions are:
1) Do you have any idea about transferring Passwords in KeyChain from one iCloud account to another ?
2) Do you have any idea about transferring ownership of a photo stream to one iCloud account to another ?
3) Do you have any idea about the email address transfer
4) Do you have any other way to do this ?

The easiest thing to do would be to use an iOS device, such as your iPhone to migrate the data from one account to the other. You can go to Settings>iCloud on your phone, sign out of account B, choose Keep on My iPhone and provide your password when prompted, then sign back in using ID A to create a new iCloud account and choose Merge when prompted to upload the data. This will not migrate notes, which as you said, can be dragged and dropped between accounts on your Mac.
This will also not move your existing iCloud email account. You cannot move an iCloud email account to a new iCloud account. You would either have to switch to the new @icloud.com email account that goes with your new iCloud account, or continue to use the existing email account as a "secondary account" To do this, you would go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Add Account>iCloud on your iOS devices (and System Preferences>Internet Accounts>iCloud on your Mac), sign back into account B and turn on Mail. Just be aware that, at least on an iOS device, this would not be push email as push is only supported in the primary iCloud account.
Photo stream cannot be moved between accounts either, not can it be enabled in a secondary account. If you want to keep your photo stream photos you'll have to either save them to your device, or add them to a shared album before signing out of the existing account (see http://help.apple.com/icloud/#/mmc0cd7e99). Another option would be to import them to your iPhoto events, then add them back to your new photo stream using iPhoto when you sign into the new iCloud account on your Mac.
For iCloud keychain, I believe you can turn it off iCloud keychain and you will be given an option to keep a copy of any saved passwords and credit card information on your device. Then set up iCloud keychain again once you are signed into your new iCloud account.

If you've got a Mac and OSX you can do this in Preview. Make sure you can see the sidebar with the first PDF opened, and then drag the second PDF to the bottom of the last page in the sidebar. Also you can reduce the size of your saved file by selecting (or making) a Quartz filter to 'reduce file size'

Syncronize two Macs with iTunes

Hi people,
anybody here, who knows if it is possible to synchronize the songs and playlists in iTunes on two Macs? I have a Power Mac G5 running in my office (sometimes downloading songs here) and an iBook G4 (sometimes downloading there) and it really annoys me, to make a TextEdit file or anything to copy the downloaded songs manually. Is there a feature who provides that kind of Synchronization?

Unfortunately, there isn't an automatic way to sync your two library.
If it's just a matter of capturing music and playlists that you've added, you can always export either the specific playlists (iTunes>>File>>Export Song List) or the entire iTunes Library (iTunes>>File>>Export Library) to .xml files, then transfer them (by email or network connection) to the other computer, and bring them into iTunes via the Import command (iTunes>>File>>Import).
If you want to sync up your metadata (playcounts, date played, etc), there isn't anything that will merge the contents of the two libraries into a single unified file.

Nothing was forced at all. You could have (and still can) create an iCloud account using your yahoo AppleID.

Place the second image. (Image Reveal All can be used instead of expanding the canvas if part of the second image is outside the document area.)

Sorry, do you mean a slide show narration? That will be tricky I suspect. You may need to merge the two audio files but I'm not sure how exactly you go about that. I imagine you would have to locate the narration files (they will be in the keynote package), merge them together and save back into the 'single' version of the keynote presentation.
Searching for narration in this forum will give you the name of the file you are looking for. You'd probably use something like Garageband to edit the two together. Hopefully someone else can help with exact instructions.

There's some cross over of music, but a lot of difference too between them.

Drag one of the two libraries to the external drive, launch iTunes on that computer with the Option key held down, and point it to that instance of the library. On the other computer, point iTunes to the library on the external drive and then drag the internal library into the open iTunes window.

Merge two iCal files- Help

I have two Macs, a desktop and a Macbook air. The desktop had a problem which kept it off line for quite a while. It is now working. I wanted to merge several years worth of old iCal information onto my Macbook Air calendar, which has only recent and future appointments. I exported the deskto iCal information into a .icbu file. When I tried to import it into my Macbook Air calendar, I got a warning the the current info would be replaced.
Any ideas how to do a clean merger? There would be few, if any duplicate events.

Use Calendar>File>Export>Export...on the desired calendar. This will create a .ics file for the selected calendar.
Transfer the .ics file to your desired computer, double click the .ics file and follow the importing prompts. Make sure you import it into your existing calendar. As you indicated there will be duplicates, but it sounds like you will be able to manage and delete them without consequence.
These comments are made in consideration that you are NOT using iCloud.
