Merging user accounts after migration?

Recently got a Macbook Pro.  Love it. Transferred information off of an old emac that I had and now have two user accounts.  I can't access the files I migrated without switching between user accounts.  Is there a way to move the files from the old user account to my new one and just have the one user account from there?  I'm very new to Mac so I'm trying to catch up (having been a PC user for far too long).
Any advice would be helpful

  • How do i merge my user accounts after migration assistant

    Hello,
    How do I merge my user accounts after migration assistant from a time machine back up?

    I wonder how to plan what account and rights to have where?
    I had my old original account on my iMac, and then I "migrated" the data to a user account, in order to have some advantages with that setup. So everything worked approximately ok in this setup.
    And yesterday, I tried migrating to a new Mac, and suddenly I get aware of the fact that the rights on these two earlier accounts were important.
    And especially, after doing the migration to the new machine twice, until I got the Mail working, I am now totaly bewildered what solution to aim for? How to merge the two migrated admin accounts - keeping the original admin account is also important, since my file system har special rights for that one.
    Could anyone give me more ideas about how to proceed? I think I have working Mail on one of the two migrated account (with 100 000 mails or so, it seems so...). The other account is the one I would like to have.
    Also I think I want to use a normal user account, not an admin account for my daily use. And I have to see if things still work if I turn off the admin rights...
    Thankful for any advice!

  • Merging user accounts after using Migration Assistant

    I've just acquired my first Mac (Lion OS) and set it up without using the Migration Assistant.  I set up mail accounts for my existing email addresses (Gmail & Virgin).  A few days later I decided to transfer my old files from the PC using Migration Assistant.  Rather than do the whole thing in one go I thought I'd start with iTunes.  What I failed to realise is that the Migration creates a new user account on the Mac (something I only noticed when I couldn't find iTunes and went searching).  If I now migrate something else such as "My Photographs", another user account will appear.
    I don't really want more than one user account so how do I transfer the iTunes music from one account to another and the same when I bring more stuff across from the PC?  A related issue is the fact I've set up mail accounts already.  If I migrate my Outlook mail folders and email account details can these also be merged or will the Mac be confused as I've already set something up?
    Any help appreciated from this newbie Mac user.  Thanks.

  • Two user accounts after Migration from old Mac

    Yesterday I bought a new iMac with OSX Lion. I used the Setup assistant to move my data from my old iMac (Leopard) using Firewire target disk mode.
    When that was finished, I was suprised not to see any of my old stuff on my new Mac, so I started copying some stuff manually. It was only later that my penny dropped (Lion noobie here) and I realised I now have two user accounts: my new "Lion" account, and another one which - tada - does contain all my old stuff. Both appear to be admin accounts.
    Since I already manually copied all the stuff I wanted to keep to my new account, can I safely delete the old account? How do I do this, and what happens with the old stuff? I read something about the home folder of the deleted user being moved somewhere. Where would that be?
    Thanks!

    It is easy to delete an account but you wisely used the word "safely".  When I migrated to Lion I did an "in place" upgrade and no new adminstrative accounts were created.   Lion will create a guest acount but that can be easily disabled in the Users and Groups preference pane.  Did you do an in place or a clean install of Lion?
    First, before you delete anything be absolutely sure that the account you want to keep has everything you need.  I suggest you work with it a least a week before making that judgement.  There is no hurry if you have the space to keep two accounts.  I have a spare adminstrative account just in case I need it for troubleshooting.  Be sure you backed up your boot drive with a versioned (like Time Machine) and a cloned backup to an external drive.
    Go to System Preferences and choose the Users and Groups preference pane.  There you will find your accounts and their designations (i.e. adminstrator, guest, standard).   If you are completely satisfied that the admin account you backed up is all you need then you can click on the lock at the bottom left of that pane, enter your adminstrative password, choose the account you want to delete and click the minus button.  Once you have done this, it is gone.  All of the settings and data you had will be gone unless they were duplicated in another account.  Your applications should remain.
    That said, there is nothing wrong with having two adminstrator accounts.  Some very security minded people suggest that you should not operate from your admin account because it allows access to deep levels in your computer.

  • File associations are lost when user account is migrated from one domain to another domain (SID changes)

    Hello,
    Currently we are in the middle of a migration project. We are migrating users from child domains to the root domain of one organization.
    The user accounts are migrated with powershell using Move-ADObject cmdlet. This works as expected. The SIDHistory attribute is updated correctly.
    Recently we received complaints from some *migrated* users - they lost their default/custom file associations. This happens only on Windows 8/Windows 8.1.
    What happens:
    the user is migrated and logs on
    her profile loads and everything's preserved (as expected)
    the user clicks on a .jpeg file (previously associated with program XYZ)
    OS asks the user to choose a program to open the file with
    the user chooses a default program XYZ and the file opens
    when the user clicks on a .jpeg file again - OS asks to choose a program again
    i.e. the settings are not preserved.
    Our investigation shows that it is connected with the UserChoice registry key and the HASH value under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.SomeExt
    According to this blog
    the HASH is calculated based on user's SID. But after the migration the user has new SID and the HASH becomes invalid and we hit this:
    "However In Win 8, the registry changes are verified by a hash (unique per user and app)  that detects tampering by apps. In the absence of a valid hash, we ignore the default in the registry."
    Currently deleting the UserChoice key for all associations solves the problem. But the user has to make all her customizations again which is undesirable.
    Is there any supported way to fix this? Why the OS doesn't update the HASH after the first logon when the SID has changed as it updates the SID for the ProfileList key?
    This could become big issue in large migrations.

    Hello Petar K. Georgiev,
    Please check the following article to change the registry key to change back to the default file type associations.

  • Unable to log in to user account after installing windows 7 using Bootcamp

    Hi everyone,
    I need help. I have been at it for days, I have googled every which way but I am not able to fix this. Basically my problem is that I am unable to log in to my user account after I used Bootcamp to install windows 7. I will explain what I did up until I couldn't log in.
    I backed up my user account using Time Machine(I was logged in as the user). The account had FileVault activated and I neglected to disable FileVault before back up. I just didn't think to, it did not even occur to me! Then I partitioned Macintosh HD, I was doing this with my step son and he thought we were supposed to partition the hard drive first before running Bootcamp! After that was done, I couldn't run Bootcamp because obviously we had whipped the HD clean! Anyway, I reinstalled the OS X using the internet, after which I run Bootcamp and successfully installed windows 7. Then I went on to restore my account using Time Machine, only when I try to log in I get the error message "you are unable to log in to the user account at this time". I tried every possible solution I could find on here, including creating a new admin account, deleting the old account but saving the user folder and then routing the new account to the old user folder. Still nothing. I have tried logging in as a root user, reset the master password and deleted FileVault files from Library/keychain in the hope I would access the user account, but to no avail. What's more is that I can't even see the sparse bundle or sparse image files that people keep referring too. I can't even find it on the Time Machine back up! I then thought I would cut my losses and try system recovery using Stellar Phoenix Mac Data Recovery (cost me £81) but it did not recover any of my photos, music, videos or documents.
    I honestly can't come to terms with the fact that I am unable to login to an account with 3 years worth of pictures and documents. I am having a hard time letting go. Is there anyway possible to crack this?
    Thank you in advance.
    By the way, I am running Mountain Lion OX 10.8.4 on MacBook mid 2010

    I have this exact problem. Installed Bootcamp on a networked iMac running Mountain lion and and can no longer log in to my Mac user account. Would love if any of the pro users on here can shed a bit of light.

  • My computer keeps going to user account after one minute of idlig. How can I change that?

    my computer keeps going back to user account after one minute of idling.  The only thing I know I did was to change the time on window themes.  Now how do I get the user account page from taking me from my page I am currently reading?  Does this after every 60 sec. of no activity.

    Hello again loveroflight,
    I am still not understanding apparently what your issue is. So I think it would be best if you contact HP Technical Support for repair options. They will be able to log onto your system and actually see what it is you are having and issue with and provide you with a resolution.
    I would like to thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • Taking existing Plumtree user accounts and migrating them to existing group

    Does anyone know if it is possible through the Local Portal API or the EDK/IDK to take existing Plumtree user accounts and migrate them to existing groups? Any risks in doing this programmatically? Is it best done through the ui manually to maintain referential and database integrity? Just trying to assess risk here and decide if we should build this kind of tool for our customer which they are requesting. Does the Local Portal API or the EDK/IDK provide capability of "adding" a group affiliation to existing Plumtree users or would this be a bad idea?

    A network account is really existing only on the server but if you use "portable homefolders" (Tiger client and server) you could "migrate" the local account to a "server" one by:
    Login locally as another user with administrative rights.
    Change the name of the old account folder in /Users.
    Remove the "old" account locally (woun't remove the "old" folder as you changed the name) only Netinfo data.
    Login using the serveraccount login/password thus creating a homefolder on the server.
    Logout and back in, enable portable homefolder.
    Logout and then in as a local admin and remove the new user folder.
    Change the name on the old userfolder to what the new one had.
    I'm not a 100% sure Netinfo has the server account UID now (added by logging in and creating the portable account?) but if it does:
    (http://forums.macosxhints.com/archive/index.php/t-12077.html)
    "Finding and changing UIDs across the filesystem is a one-liner command:
    sudo find / -user UID -exec chown userName {} \;
    (replace UID with the old UID number and userName with the new user name to associate file ownership.)"
    (A portable account must have got some "kind" of UID?)
    Let the machine "sync" with the server account.
    If you want an "on network only" account I don't know what you need to remove locally afterwards.

  • Two user accounts after using migration assistant

    I used migration assistant to move my iTunes library (plus all my other files) from my iMac to my macbook. I wanted to sync my iPhone on my Macbook. I didn't think it had worked but I shut down my macbook and noticed I have two user ID's now (identical except for 2 at end of 2nd user name). Turns out all my iMac files are now in the 2nd user account. How do I get them to my first user account now? I want to have all my files together under one user name not two. Thanks for the help!

    Use the Accounts pane of System Preferences to delete that user account as well as its files, connect the two computers together, follow the instructions in this article, and migrate the library manually. It's in the Music folder of the Finder's sidebar on each computer by default.

  • I'm having a problem with logging into a FileVault-protected user account after restoring from Time Machine backup.

    Hi all,
    My computer had been running really slowly for a while, so I decided to erase the whole hard drive and reinstall the operating system, and then I was going to restore the files I cared about from Time Machine. The main account, which had all my documents and photos, was FileVault-protected. The last thing I did before erasing the hard drive was to run one last Time Machine backup. As far as I remember, I always ran Time Machine backups with the FileVaulted user logged in.
    I don't remember whether I was using FileVault 1 or 2. I had been using FileVault 1, but I installed Lion as soon as it came out and I thought I had migrated to FileVault 2 at that point.
    Once I erased the hard drive and reinstalled the operating system, I browsed the Time Machine disk and, within the Users folder, there was no folder for the main user account. When I tried to reinstall everything by restoring from Time Machine backup, I'd get the option for all the user accounts, but when I tried to log in with the main one I'd get the dreaded "You are unable to log in to the FileVault user account "User" at this time. Log in failed because an error occurred." Finally, when attempting to restore from the Time Machine backup again, I noticed something strange: After the computer got to about 10% done restoring, it declared itself completed successfully and rebooted.
    I've tried a number of tips that came up from questions about similar issues on the Apple support forum, but had no luck. Is there any way to get these files back? Did they ever even get backed up?
    Thanks.

    I can't find it! not sure what's going on but the only folder shown is the " Shared" folder.
    Did you have only the one user account? If there were others, they should also be in the "Users" folder. You probably won't have access to the files inside them, but they should be there.
    From what can make out, it looks like it's not backed up any of the files for the filevault account. Can't see user folder when looking through previous backups in Time Machine galaxy view.
    Are you doing that from a Finder window set to your internal HD, or your computer name? It should look something like this (with the Finder in List view):
    |
    |
    I'd been logging out and backing up manually on a regular basis.
    Scheduled backups should run normally; but they won't back up the File Vault sparse bundle, nor will any run manually.
    The only time it's backed-up is when you actually log out.
    You should have seen this window on logout:
    |
    |
    followed by this one:
    |
    |
    If you didn't see the second one, or cancelled it, the account wasn't backed-up.

  • Merge user account

    HI,
    I just got my first mac, (a MacBook Air).  I used the windows migration assistant to transfer my files from my old PC to my new mac.  It took 4 days, but finally finished, and all the files I wanted are in huge mac.  However, the files are on a new user account.  Now I have two accounts on my computer.  I'll be the only person using it, so it's really annoying to have to switch between them.  How of I merge accounts or move the files from one account to the other (without spending 4 days waiting for files to move)?
    i tried doing some internet searches but found info that was for older versions of the operating system or used too much tech speak.  Anyone have a simple answer?
    Thanks!

  • ADMT 3.2 deletes source account after migration

    Hi,
    I am using ADMT 3.2 to do an intraforest migration in which two child domains are consolidated into a single child domain. Whenever I start a scripted migration, the source user account is deleted after the migration and I have a problem with this because
    I cannot do a rollback in case of a corruption during a migration.
    The option file I use with the migration contains the following parameters.
    [User]
    DisableOption=EnableTarget
    SourceExpiration=None
    MigrateSIDs=Yes
    TranslateRoamingProfile=No
    UpdateUserRights=No
    MigrateGroups=No
    UpdatePreviouslyMigratedObjects=No
    FixGroupMembership=Yes
    MigrateServiceAccounts=No
    UpdateGroupRights=No
    Is there any advice on how to prevent deletion of the source account? Thanks.
    John

    Yes, its a expected behavior using ADMT tool in intraforest migration where during migration of user object is deleted form the source domain and moved to the target domain. You can use Quest tool for migration which provide feature to rollback feature like
    keep object disabled during intraforest migration but its a paid tool.

  • Merging User Accounts

    I used Migration Assistant to transfer files and applications form 2 older computers to my newer laptop and now have 3 different user accounts.  I want to merge these all into one, how do I do this?

    I recommend you read Pondini's guide on the subject.  Note that you need to be careful not to overwrite files with the same name, iPhotos and iTune libraries in particular.  Give them a suffix to their names to differentiate them.
    iPhoto Library Manager has a facility to merge libraries. I don't know about iTunes.

  • Multiple User Accounts and Migrating from a hard drive from  MacBook

    After spilling a drink on my old MacBook, which was running a current version of Snow Leopard, I had to pull out my hard drive and migrate my settings and all to a new MacBook Pro. When I first started I didn’t use the set up assistant because I didn’t have a fire wire connection and didn’t realize it was still possible with a USB connection. So I set up a new user account and started to copy files. (ie music, pictures, ect) I then realized I had no idea what I was doing and discovered the Migration Assistant. I ran that and it was great. Everything worked. Problem being, it set up a new user account and duplicated everything I had copied. So now I had 60+GB of duplicated files. Is it possible to remove the bad user account and all files copied into that account? Or should I reset to Manufactures setting? Is that possible?

    PNW Sasquatch wrote:

    Hi, and welcome to the forums.
    Sure. Just log on with an account you're going to keep (preferably an Admin account), go to +System Preferences > Accounts+ and select and delete the one in question. You'll get a prompt that allows you to delete the home folder along with it.

  • Duplicate user account OR migrate iPhoto/iWeb between users

    I've seen this question asked several times before, but have not seen an answer!
    So, with as many details as I can muster:
    I have, on my computer, 4 user accounts: my admin account, my user account, my boyfriend's user account, and our business account... All separate, keeps things nice and tidy (sort of!).
    I have a new and separate project that I'm starting to work on which involves lots of images, and new websites, and new and different stuff that's necessary for the project, but just clutter in any of the other accounts.
    Because this project started out as something my man wanted to play around with, all of the beginnings of this are in his iPhoto and his iWeb, and they're well organized.  I've not had luck so far moving the iPhoto and iWeb libraries to a new/blank user and maintaining the organization that I've spent time and attention making right.
    He's not so great with technology, and gets very frustrated (and unproductive!) when anything on the computer doesn't work exactly like he expects it to. (When Lion came out and the scrolling went "the wrong direction" he was afraid to use the computer at all for a week, because "everything changed, I don't even know how to use it anymore" that's between us though, personal issure ). So I'd like to keep the user experience the same for him.   I'd like to duplicate his settings, preferences, etc. into a new user for him, and take over his current account to isolate this project.
    So, in summary:
    I want to create a new account with the same user experience  as a current  account without having to find and reset all of his settings.
    OR
    I want an exact copy of the iPhoto and iWeb from this user account to another one, on the same machine.
    I am currently running OSX 10.7.2, iPhoto '11 9.2.1 and iWeb 3.0.4
    Thanks in advance for any help!

    That's easy, if you have Time Machine or "bootable clone" backups. (If you don't, you should anyway.  Post back if you need info on them.)
    Use Migration Assistant to transfer just that user account from the backups; it will put up a screen saying it can't transfer it under the same name as the existing account, and allowing you to rename it.
    Other than having a different name, the transferred account will be identical to the existing one.  Then you can modifiy them separately as necessary.
    EDIT:  see Using Migration Assistant on Lion for detailed instructions.  Be sure to un-check the boxes for eveything except that one user account.
