Merging video clip separated into two clips in camera

Working with a Canon 5D mk3 and a single clip was separated into two clips by the camera. Trying to merge them back into a single clip so that I can then merge into a multiclip arrangment with footage from second camera and off camera audio. Have followed the following process from support:
http://documentation.apple.com/en/finalcutpro/usermanual/index.html#chapter=29%2 6section=4%26tasks=true
When dragging the selection back into the Browser, a single file is not created but rather the two separate files.
Suggestions?
Thank you.

The only way for FCP to stitch separate shots is if it is shot in a format that is supported by the Log and Transfer function, and if the camera is designed to merge the clips into one shot via the metadata.  For example, P2 breaks up the footage into 4GB chunks, due to the P2 card format's 4GB file size limit. AVCHD will do the same thing, as will XDCAM.  But the metadata recorded by the camera informs the NLE that they are essentially one clip, so when you convert via Log and Transfer, FCP (And Avid, and Adobe) will stitch them together.
But this only works with supported formats.  H.264 from DSLRs...not supported...by any NLE.  Even though you can L&T Canon 5D Mark 2 footage (Mark 3 is unsupported, as it is a newer camera, and FCP was discontinued before it came out), it still keeps the media separate.  Sorry...that's the drawback to shooting DSLRs.  The ones that shoot AVCHD...will be stitched, because they have advanced metadata support.
FCP-X will multiclip these separate files, however. Because it doesn't have issue with broken clips. It's the best multicam function of any NLE.

  • How do you cut an imovie clip into two clips?

How do you cut an imovie clip into two clips?  I have a very long clip from which I want to remove the middle (and keep the beginnin and end).

There are several ways to do this. Here are a couple.
    1) Drag the long clip into your project. Drag to select the portion you want to remove. Then right-click/Split Clip. This will give you three clips, the first, the last, and the one in the middle that you want to delete. You can select the middle clip and right-click/Delete Selection.
    2) Drag the long clip into your project. Drag to select the frames you want to delete. Then right-click/Delete Selection.

  • Dragging video clips down into audio clips territory??

    Now this is intriguing.
I didn't even think it was possible.  Seems like this editor has dragged video clips down (at least one track down, if there were tracks) below the line I always assumed was VIDEO ABOVE, AUDIO BELOW.  So this film has a whole bunch of video clips below the storyline.  And we can still see them.  I couldn't quite figure out her logic, though I'm sure it's legit, she's a great filmmaker ... she wanted to be able to remember (by seeing, even though they are invisible to the timeline) chunks of certain clips, interviews, that she wasn't using currently, but that she might want to use later.
But what might be the Apple logic for being able to do this? Very curious.
    Ben

    Thank you Tom.
Very interesting.  Now I can try to imagine how I can use this ... I'm enjoying X, after initially hating it, now if only for the fact I keep being surprised by it.
    Very much appreciated,

  • Movie clip breaking into other clips

    Good morning from Tanzania!
I have exported a movie (around 2mins) from windows media format to M4v format, for use in quicktime.
I then imported this into imovieHD with the objective of edititing a section of the movie.
When I imported the movie I was hoping that I would be able to select the targeted clip and edit, However the movie inportes as one clip only.
Is there a way to break this down to many clips so as they can be edited??
    Thank you.

Of course. Split at playhead using Command-T.

  • 10.0.9: Mark In/Out on Event clip, deselects clip and moves two clips up in event browser!?!

    Hi All,
Since upgrading to FCPX 10.0.9, some - not all - clips in the Event Browser behave strange.
If I use the keyboard shortcuts 'I' or 'O' to mark In or Out, the selection of the clip is changed to the clip 2 clips up in the list!
It's only some clips, but very consistent with those clips.
Using mouse to select a range, works fine, and E to insert in timeline is also ok.
Anyone seens this, or know a fix?
    Bug in 10.0.9?

    AHHH!!!!
    Found it!
I'm looking at a Keyword selection!
FCPX now shows the complete clip with the keyword-range selected, and skimming over and using I/O will make this 'jumping'...

  • Phantom Frame Appears Between Two Clips

I am new to FCP. When I play my video in the timeline, a phantom frame from another clip plays between two clips. I don't know if I accidentally placed one of the clips on top of it or something when I was moving clips, but I can't figure out how to get rid of it. I deleted the two videos one at a time to see which clip it was attached to, but the phantom frame played no matter which of the two I deleted. I also used the blade to cut the end of the first clip and the beginning of the other, but it still appeared. I therefore figure it must be between the two clips, but I can't find anything between them to select. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you very much.
ETA; When I look closely, I think the black gap between the two clips is larger than the slight black gap between normal clips, so maybe that does indicate there's something there?

Here is a shot of a time line where I have zoomed in as far as I can. At this level of zoom, a single frame can barely fit on my screen. If you maximize your zoom you should see only the thin line as shown between the partial frame on the right and the one on the left. If you see something more – either a gap or a clip with content – you should be able to select and delete it.

  • IMovie is importing my shot in two clips with a 3s gap b/w

When I imported about 60 minutes of footage from tape iMovie made a strange choice to cut a stationary shot of someone giving a speech into two clips, and yet the clip is continuous arcoss them walking off stage and the camera going wide and a new speaker coming on stage and talking. I really need the 3 seconds back how do I get it. Is there a way to import and tell iMovie to take a rest on the 'Smart' features and just give me one clip that I can split manually?

    Hi
from tape esp. VHS etc. there use to be drop outs to me so I use iMovie HD6 to import without cutting up into individual clips.
Don't think this feature is avail in iMovie'08 to 11
Even FinalCut had problems with this
    Analog tapes I solved by
    • Using an A/D-box (converter) that has TimeBase Correction - or -
    • Copy to miniDV tape and use a pre-recorded tape to ge a continuous TimeCode
But from tapes already in DV then
    • iMovie HD6 - or -
    • Copy to miniDV tape on Second miniDV Camera and use of 4-pin to 4-oin FW-Cable, and use a pre-recorded tape to ge a continuous TimeCode - also works
(I got this problem by recording in LP-Mode - I never do that again ! )

What version of Premiere Elements and on what computer operating system is it running?
Do you want to export these two clips from the same Timeline? If so, you can selectively export them.
    Two critical details for this...
    a. Set the gray tabs of the Work Area Bar to span just the segment that you want to export
    and
    b. Have a check mark next to the option Share Work Area Bar Only in the export settings. Not all export
choices have this option. But, it is a must have for this select exporting.
You can set the gray tabs of the Work Area Bar with keyboard shortcuts...
Move the Timeline Indicator to the beginning of the segment to be exported. Then as you hold down the
Alt key of the computer keyboard, hit the left bracket key [
Move the Timeline Indicator to the end of the segment to be exported. Then as you hold down the
Alt key of the computer keyboard, hit the right bracket key ]
The following is a quick look at the gray tabs and the Work Area Bar to which I am referring.
This screenshot is from a Premiere Elements version earlier than 11, but it conveys the concept of gray tabs and
Work Area Bar in the Edit area as well as the option Share Work Area Bar Only in the export settings.
Please le me know if you have any questions or need clarification on any of the above.
    Thank you.

Not sure how the Alt will translate for match in this keyboard shortcut - Option or something else?

  • How to split a video clip into two separate clips?

Whenever i enter the key word to search for split, it always shows me how to do split edit, or split screen. I do not want that. I just need to know, how to cut a video/audio clip into two pieces, so that I can cut one of them out of the time line....
    Could somebody help....
    Thanks

I have a sandwich. I have been searching how to split the sandwich but it seems you don't split a sandwich. Someone said look in a draw for a tool or something!
    Wow.
There are lots of ways to do what you're asking besides what has been said. You can double click the clip in the Browser. Set In & Out points in the viewer and add the Clip to the sequence. No need to split or cut anything in the sequence.
You really need to learn a bit more before you continue cause this is a pre-noob question. I don't really know how to categorise it.

  • I want to SPLIT A CLIP. That's all. Make one piece into two.

I am looking for the equivalent of the 'Command-T' function in iMovie HD. This is one of the most commonly used actions in processing video, and apparently it doesn't exist. The 'Split Clip' command in iMovie 09 simply does not work for me. At all. EVER. I have yet to find an instance where it isn't grayed out. All I want to do is split a clip, and add a transition between the two.
While I'm on my soap box, the revisions of iMovie since V.6 are without a doubt the most counter-intuitive, joy-sucking applications ever produced by Apple. iMovie made it FUN to edit video; these last two versions make it frustrating and cumbersome.
To reiterate, I want to SPLIT A CLIP INTO TWO PIECES. If anyone here can provide instructions for doing so (as opposed to explaining why it is NOT possible), then kindly do so. Thank you.

Trey, I seriously feel your pain. I'm editing a wedding project in IM '09 and it is literally taking me twice as long to complete the project than it would have in HD. You should be able to make splits in the event browsers, but that's too much like common sense for Apple. They completely mucked up the editing process by doing away with iMovie HD, which by the way is not working well in Snow Leopard.
As for split, I suggest the same thing as above. Put the playhead where you want the split. Us shortcut key, ShiftCommandS. I had problems with it this morning, but it finally kicked in.
I also had a problem when trying delete a selection of a clip. When I clicked delete, it deleted the selection plus the extracted audio of the entire clip from which I took the selection. Not sure what caused that.
I have FCE installed, so maybe I’ll haul it out and try using it for my next project. IM '09 is a pain. I'm not even sure how it's more accessible to general users.

  • I have old video clips in Photoshop Elements Organizer v12 for Mac.  I want to divide some of those clips in Organizer.  I can do that in Premiere Elements 12 and save them as "Projects" - but how do I get the divided clips back into Organizer?

I have old video clips in Photoshop Elements Organizer v12 for Mac.  I want to divide some of those single clips into 2 or 3 separate clips, each shown separately in Organizer.  I can divide the clips in Premiere Elements Editor 12 and save them as "Projects" - but I can't find any way to get those divided clips back into Organizer.  Does anyone know whether that can be done?  Many thanks for your thoughts.

  • How to merge video clips?

I have a video that is broken into two files (the memory card had a 4gb file limit so it has two files under that size). I imported the two of them into FCPX no problem but I want to treat the both of them as one clip in the event browser. Is there a way to do this?

... ehm? you can select two clips and hit F = both marked.
or, if you want to mark just parts of both clips, in-to-end clip#1, begin-to-out on clip#2 ...
ok, this is two clicks, instead of one ... big thing
I would avoid compounds as much as possible.
And esp.just for organizing, the 'data base tool' FCPX offers with its tags, keywords, favorites, meta-info, search filters, smart collections etc etc etc MUCH more 'powerful' tools than just bins of single solid clips.
…Not meant as a personal offence, but I really recommend to get familiar with the NEW way, how FCPX handles 'sources'… just for organizing, compounds is really the wrong turn.... my 5¢.-
No I can't mark from one clip into another because they have different time stamps. I guess the camera marks the clips based on the start time. And there are clips in between these two clips.
Why is there no way to join clips?

  • Combine two clips into one

Hi, is it possible to take two clips and join them together (that were never joined before, but are two different clips)? I want to make it so both clip appear when viewed. For example, if I had a video clip of it raining outside and a clip of somebody dancing, I would want both clips to be joined into one which would be viewed as somebody dancing in the rain. I am not sure if this is possible, but any thoughts or tips would be appreciated.
Note: (I do know that there is an effect for rain)
    Thank you!
    -Jason

    Jason,
the effect you are looking for is called 'blue-' or 'green-screening'. The name derives from the background color you shoot one scene with. It is was usually blue because it is a color that does not appear naturally on an actor, and can easily be targeted by the composition hardware (a so-called 'chroma-keyer'. Blue worked well because at that time a simple high-pass filter on the blue channel could be used to trigger the composition circuit, and allowed real-time composition on analog hardware).
    It basically works like this:
    1. Set up a really good lit stage with a blue or green background. It is very important that both background and actor are well lit.
    2. Film your scene
    3. Film the scene you want to place your actor in (e.g. rain) - let's call it the 'actless' scene because no acting happens
    4. Use a chroma keying plug-in ('blue-screen', 'green-screen') to replace anything blue or green in your acted scene with the actless scene.
If you have both scenes shot already (without a uniformly colored background), this will not work.
We do have chroma-keying plug-ins (see here:
    http://www.imovieplugins.com/plugs/chromamovie.html
and here: http://www.imovieplugins.com/plugs/chromastatic.html), but currently (while Apple is transitioning to Intel) they have become unreliable. Some of our esteemed competitors have similar plug-ins you might want to look at.
    Hope this helps,
    -ch

  • How to Turn Long DV video into Smaller Clips to Edit

Hi everyone, I've googled and fiddled around for hours trying to figure out how to splice up my rather long DV file (converted over from a home wedding DVD) to begin editting. I've tried creating markers and then subclipping - but that doesn't seem to work. Nothing happens. Is there an easy way to do this?
    How I've been doing it:
Create new project. Then import the DV file. There appears in the browser the 'sequence1' and then the DV file. I grab it into the viewer and then drag it also into the timeline. However, I get a red bar, so I render it. After this, the the canvas displays the timeline video but the viewer video is completely separate. They still play the same DV but not simultaneously. I don't know how to go about clipping this large file so that I can edit each scene separately. How do I splice this long segment into smaller clips that show up in my browser for editting?
Thank you so much for your help!!

Well... I'd suggest you either reconvert that file to a dv codec .mov file, or start again with the dvd file conversion.
You've got to forget everything you knew about imovie. FCP and imovie are built on completely different paradigms. Final cut is a non-destructive editor. No matter WHAT you do in FCP, the actual media clip remains unchanged, just like your father's face a week after you tell him you wrecked the family car.
After you've got your correct .mov file, import it into fcp. Open it in the viewer. Play down until you find the first part you want to use. Press "I" for an in point, play down until you want it to end, then press "O" for out. Then press command U, or go to the modify menu and select Make Subclip.
You'll get a little jagged media icon in your browser window. It makes good sense to name it something more than what fcp names it., so you'll be able to find it again.
I personally don't like to work with subclips. Usually I'll capture in logical chunks. But you can't do that with your one long file. What I do instead of subclipping is to add my select shots into a sequence. Then I'll duplicate the sequence and start working with that- rearranging, deleting etc, until I'm happy.
    Hope this is useful.
