Merging virtual copies back into original

Hi,
I'm using Lightroom 2 and have finally got round to creating a single master catalogue from all of my yearly ones.
Somehow during the importing I managed to pull in a load (1400) photos without their develop settings.
This would have been fine if I'd noticed before spending days reorganising my keywords.
Thanks to lightroom being able to detect duplicates on import from catalogue, I've managed to re-import the "developed" versions, keeping the originals as virtual copies. This means I now have a set of 1400 original images with the correct developing changes (and no keywords) - each one has a single virtual copy with no developing but the correct keywords.
Can anyone think of a way of copying the keywords back into the originals for all 1400 photos? I want to get rid of the virtual copies.
Seems like there should be some way of doing this?
Cheers in advance for any advice.
Nick

Hi,
I did originally import the photos from catalogue - the problem is I got out of sync somehow (PEBKAC - I probably developed in the original catalogue and keyworded in the new master one).
However, LR2 thankfully allowed me to reimport the settings for each photo and I used "create a virtual copy" thankfully - otherwise I'd have wiped out my tidied up keywords.
Problem is as below...
               develop settings     keywords
Original       correct                  none (I intentionally deleted the crappy old ones)
VC              wrong                   correct
All I want to do is copy the keywords from the VC to the orig (but for 1400 photos)

  • A way to merge edits in virtual copies back the the original dng

I have a large set of images from a recent job (all with varying edits). My client if there was a way to take the final set of images an apply a variety of different lightroom edits to compare against the original set. I made selected my full set of original dng files and created several virtual copy sets and placed them in separate collections. After making a variety of tests the customer has decided on one of the virtual copy sets. Is there a way to merge the edits in the virtual copy set back to the original dng files? Is there a way to make a virtual copy set into its own set of dng files.
    Jim

Is there a way to make a virtual copy set into its own set of dng files.
A very quick way is to either export originals (or as dng, which does the same thing in this case) on the virtual copy set, which will give you a folder on your harddisk with "edited" dngs (I quote this because there is no such thing as edited dngs. The RAW data is untouched, there is just a develop recipe along with a jpeg preview saved into the file). Another way is to export the collection of virtual copies to a new catalog. You can include the originals if you want, or you can simply leave them in place if you don't want to double the needed storage space. You'll get a new catalog with just the virtual copies in it, but they will be masters at that point. Then you write metadata to file from this newly exported catalog.

  • Merge free space back into partition

I was partitioning my external hard drive for time machine and I ended up with extra free space. How do I merge that back into one of the partitions?
See that extra block of 128 GB? How can I add that into the External Storage?

Manipulating the partition table always risks the data on the drive, but you can try the following to expand the partition size:
    1. open the Terminal and enter "diskutil list" to get a list of the drive devices and volumes on them, along with their identifiers.
    2. Run the following command using the identifier for the External Storage partition (replace "IDENTIFIER" with the identifier string, which will be something like "disk3s2"):
    diskutil resizeVolume IDENTIFIER R

  • Problem importing translated .inx back into original indesign CS4

I have translated an INX export from CS4 in Trados 8, and now it is not possible to import the target INX in CS4 again. I have done this many times before and it never presented a problem like this, the target INX files always opened ok in CS4 again. When I try to import there is no error message, the import stops and stalls after a while when trying to import a link file, it never gets any further and I have to kill the indesign service. I have tried to redo the indesign completely copying text and images into a blank indesign file, retranslate the new inx, and the only difference is that it stops at a different link when trying to import. Please help, I'm desperate, thanks.
    Br/Jesper

You might be out of luck. Trados writes directly into the INX, and if there's a tag that is not being closed correctly by Trados, InDesign can't read the INX. If your TMs are updated (sounds like they are) you can break the original INDD into parts, export those to INX separately, process those through Trados, and then try to reopen the INX files to see where the problem was, if it's a unique element on a particular page that Trados is breaking.
(I've not used the latest Trados, and I'm not too terribly familiar with any version of Trados to be honest, as I'm an SDLX guy from way, way back. You might have better luck with a Trados community as opposed to an InDesign community - have you already tried?)

  • How do I merge "free space" back into my OS X partition

Here is what I am currently looking at:
There is about 20 gb of free space that I was going to use for an Ubuntu install but have since changed my mind. To be safe I downloaded the Recovery Disk Assistant and installed it onto a flash drive. When I boot from that and enter disk utility I can drag my OS X partition into the free space and it appears to fill the drive. When I hit apply, it does it's thing and completes the partition but then instantly reverts to what it started out as with the free space still there. I tried a restart but found my drive to be in the same state. I have several back ups so I am not really worried about it, but I assumed this would work. Am I doing something wrong or do I need to just restore from the backup? Can I do that without affecting the bootcamp partition? I am on a Macbook Pro Retina running 10.8.4.

You will need to add a new partition in that empty space. Be sure you format it Mac OS Extended, Journaled. If that works, then remove the partition and try extending the OS X partition. Note that this will render your Boot Camp partition non-bootable.
Another possibility is that you should not extend the OS X volume all the way to the top of the Boot Camp partition. Leave about 2 GBs free. See if that works by providing enough space for the Recovery HD to be relocated.
Did you ever attempt to install Linux or to format that partition for Linux?

  • Are Virtual Copies saved in Backups? How do I insert a backup into an existing catalog?

Are Virtual Copies saved in Backups? How do I insert a backup into an existing catalog
I deleted a tif image file that I didn't intend to, which had several LR virtual copies created from it. The virtual copies had a lot of important history that document my print preparation edits. Are these virtual copies saved in the LR backups?
If so, how can I insert them into the catalog I am using? I have made a lot of edits in the two days since my last backup and don't want to lose that history either. Do you suggest I make a current backup before retrieving files from my last backup? I know I'm supposed to go to the backup location and open the last backup, but how do I blend that with the current work from the last 2 days?
Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks, Tom

    Rob,
That was exactly what I was after. However, I'm still having trouble getting the virtual copies imported. The master file was in my trash, I restored it to the original hard drive folder. Before I got your message I re- imported it to LR but of course LR came up with a new name since I was importing from and saving it to the same folder in LR. And of course no copies. This may have been a mistake, but before starting the procedure you described, I re-named the master file (it seemed that the import from backup would re-create it so I didn't want  a conflict).
Then I did what you said and used the 'Import From Another Catalog' feature. I found the virtual copies in the backup and checked them. But when the import completed, the it gave me file names  xxx/Copy1, xxx/Copy2 but there was no image or history or metadata. When I tried to find the folder containing the files, it said it couldn't be found. So I missed something in the settings. When I tried again, there was a warning saying the file(s) exists in the catalog and its settings differ. I went ahead anyway and the message I got was "No Photos in previous import"
Here's what the import from backup shows:
A box with catalog contents and all the folders and files within them, that you can check.
A New Photos section, which gives 2 file handling choices: a)add new photos to the catalog without moving them or b) don't import new photos
A Changed existing photos section with 2 replace options: a) nothing or b) Metadata and develop setting only. If you choose this you can check a box to preserve old settings as a virtual copy.
Not sure what to do. I changed the master file back to its original name, but that didn't make a difference. Suggestions? Thanks, Tom

  • LR3 - Questions regarding virtual copies with different exposures and Merge to HDR Pro in Photoshop

    Hello,
I'm currently testing LR3. I have a master copy and 4 virtual copies with different exposures selected in LR3. I tought to myself that I could simply use the "Edit / In Merge to HDR Pro in Photoshop" option and tune the resulting HDR image in Photoshop but it seems that Photoshop doesn't take in consideration the exposure changes I've made on the virtual copies in LR3. The 5 images are identifical in the HDR Pro tool.
Is there something I can do to about it ? Maybe there is a step I've forgot in my workflow or something ?
Maybe I could simply export the master and virtual copies to JPEGs and then import these in the Photoshop HDR Pro tool but I don't think I would get the same results right ?
    Thank you for your help.

Depending on the image ISO and overall content, you can get some pleasing DR pickup using this routine over simply hitting the fill light slider up and the exposure slider down.  I never really liked the PS approach since it seemed to require too much tweaking inside PS.  I have experimented with LR/Enfuse and Photomatix plug-ins and have settled on Photomatix for my HDR exposures (both "real" with multiple images and "fake" with a single image as you have described).  I think LR/Enfuse is donation ware so you might want to start there.  In both cases, the resultant image still needs a little adjusting back in LR after it is automatically imported into the Library.

I reimported the original raw files back into Lightroom hoping the develop settings would be re-established but no luck. Notice system mau have done an auto-backup as have an lrcat-journal file. Can I use this to restore my develop settings. I also have jpgs generated from all the deleted images.

    Hello,
if you have a backup of your catalog you can do the following:
    1. Backup your catalog first
    2. Restore your backup catalog to some location
    3. Open your current catalog and select "files->import from another catalog".
    4. Select your backup catalog and your lost images. LR ask you if you want to overwrite the current settings or save them as a virtual copy.
As an alternativ you can open your backup catalog, select the "lost" images and save the development settings as xmp sidecar fiels (using ctrl-s). Then open your current catalog, seletct the images and use "Metadata->Read Metadata from files".

    Hi..
    Thanks for the reply..
My original I Phone 5 was running IOS 6.12
My I phone 5S currently runs IOS 8..When I upgraded it, it had IOS 7 on it which made the I Photo app compatible with everything below IOS 8...( which the photo app is not compatible with ) so I just connected the I Phone 5S to my computer and thinking the new phone had IOS 7 on it that these was nothing to worry about..I thought all 900 + pictures in the photo stream would transfer but somewhere in the process, I Tunes decides to just go and install IOS 8 which requires that you run a " Photo Migration App" to transfer photos from IOS 7 & below. The problem was is that I didn't want IOS 8 on my new 5S so I thought I wouldn't have to do that part..
Anyway the phone emerged with IOS 8 on it and the only photos that remained were the ones that were actually on the phone..The 900 + I had in the stream didn't transfer because the Photos that works on IOS 7 and below isn't compatible with IOS 8..I guess you have to use the photo migration app that comes with IOS 8 & I phone 6..But I didn't ask to upgrade to IOS 8...It just did it on it's own!
I still have the I Phone 5 Back up that I did just before giving it back to Verizon but if I try to restore the I Phone 5S running IOS 8 those photos in the stream will not go back on the phone because IOS 8 isn't compatible with the I Photos" that ran on IOS 7 and below..
So I have an I Pad mini that runs IOS 7..should I try and erase it...and put that I Phone 5 backup on it and pray the photos that were in the stream come back on it so I can transfer them back to my computer...then erase the I pad mini again and restore it using it's original backup that I have on the computer and the in the cloud?
I know this sounds confusing but I'm at a loss as to what to do..This is what I found ...http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201386
    but it doesn't help me..

    What version of iPhoto?
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • Color change after merging to HDR Pro, going back into Lightroom

I recently updated Lightroom and now when I "merge to HDR Pro in PS" the photo then comes back into lightroom with highly elevated contrast.  I have set the color options to ProPhotoRGB in Lightroom and Photoshop. and the image looks fine when going from LR to PS, and it looks fine in "preview" after saving the image as a TIFF.  But once that TIFF gets imported back into LR it has all those weird color changes.   I'm not sure what to do, and I never had this problem until I recently updated photoshop and lightroom.  Any help you would be appreciated. thanks!

The image will look different in PS than in LR. PS uses the embedded preview and LR uses the actual 32 bit image data. You need to apply the LR Develop module Basic panel Tone settings to the 32 bit HDR TIFF.
