Mesh & Edit Colors Recolor artwork?

You'd think I could figure this out... I just want to change all tints of a gradient mesh.
I have a gradient mesh illustration built by someone else. It looks B&W but I discovered it's actually CMYK. So I went to edit>edit colors and changed it to Greyscale.
Now I just want this illustration to use a single pantone color, retaining all the tints.  I've been playing around in Edit Colors>Recolor Artwork using a posting by Wade Zimmerman, but my Recolor Artwork dialogs don't look the same as his screen captures, and I just can't seem to do this.
On the left side I get all the tints. I tried Create Color Group, which gave me this on the right:
Now what?  Thank you!!

From the Presets menu choose 1 color job, in the dialog window that opens click the little grid icon and choose the desired Pantone library for example, Pantone Solid Coated and press OK
in the Recolor Artwork window double click on the color in the New column. Select the desired Pantone color. Type quickly the pantone number to find it, you may type first space bar to get the numbers under 1000

    1. I have three shapes with three different colors and I drag around in the color wheel to change their colors. How does this feature determine which shapes on the artboard get which colors from the Recolor Artwork window?

It's not object based, but color based. So what you define is: color xyz will be changed to color abc. No matter what object(s) this color is applied to.

  • CS5 - Recolor artwork not working?

I have a file with a number of artboards on which there are objetcs filled with 100% Magenta and some with 100% Magenta and 0,34% Yellow. I want to get rid of that 0,34% but Illy is refusing to cooperate.
Even selecting just two or three objects and trying to recolor using the Edit/Edit colors/Recolor Artwork dialog has no effect. I can change the color manually though, for one or more selected objects.
    Any thoughts?

Thanks for looking into this, Mike.
    Document color mode is CMYK.
I've tried it with your example, and for me recolor only works for a Y value of at least 0,58%. If I choose any value below that and there is no change.
What is very odd is that the cutoff point changes depending on what color you are trying to change. In the example below, with 100% magenta, the magical value seems to be 0,56%. Anything below that does not get recolored.
It gets even more bizarre: a few examples
    If I try to change C0,55 M100 Y0,55 K0 into C0 M100 Y0 K0 nothing happens.
    Trying to change C0,55 M100 Y0,55 K0,55 into C0 M100 Y0 K0 works perfectly.
    But trying to change C0,55 M100 Y0,55 K0,25 into C0 M100 Y0 K0 results in C0 M100 Y0 K0,25!
What on earth is going on?

When I use the Recolor Artwork tool to change all the colors on an image at once, I can't figure out how to get it to let me choose from my color groups in my library. I have my library loaded on the side panel, but it won't let me choose from then when I use this otherwise awesome tool. Help, what's the trick?

  • Help with recolor artwork ...please!!!

I am going a little crazy and need help. I am not real familiar with Illustrator, so please bear with me. I need to change some full color files and convert them into two color files. I don't want the duotone look, I want to keep everything that is red, and convert the other items to grayscale. I understand live color/ recolor artwork is probably the best way to accomplish this but for some reason those options are grayed out. I've tried 'select all', the edit/edit colors/... but the options for recolor are all grayed out. I can bring up 'live color' through the 'color guide', but again I am not able to make any selections or changes. Its probably something stupid I am doing wrong, but I've been beating my head against the way trying to figure out what. Please help me out here.
    Thanks!!
    Stacy

a guess and if you are trying this then you are doing something stupid so welcome to the stupid club. We are all members.
Are you by any chance working with image files placed in illustrator, if so you cannot recolor them using the recolor art art as that can only be done with vector art and raster effects not raster image files. If you want the images to be duotone you are best to do this in Photoshop first convert them to grayscale and the duotone.
You can place a cmyk image into Illustrator and embed it and then turn it to a grayscale then copy the image and paste it in front or the back Command F and Command B respectively. That pt one on top of the other in the same exact position. Then you can select either the top one or the bottom one and then select a color from a swatch or the picker which will turn the image into a colored image then in the transparency panel you can set the blending mode to multiply and that will give essentially a duotone you can control the opacity of each image with the transparency panel as well.
    I'll take

  • How do you recolor artwork from black/white to color inside Recolor Artwork?

In Recolor artwork is there a way to change the black and white colors to a color? When I try to edit them it doesn't edit them at all. It would be nice if I didn't have to manually tweak the colors to have color before I go into Recolor Artwork.

In the center of the window with the Assign tab active, there is a Color Reduction Options button. Click that, then uncheck White nad Black under "Preserve".

  • How do I change the base color  in the recolor Artwork settings?

How do I change the base color  in the recolor Artwork settings? I know this seems like a silly thing but I really need to figure this out and I have read and gone through the manual and the help forum to no avail. Please help.

If I have understood you correctly, you want to exclude a certain color from getting affected. You can click on a color row and it becomes highlighted with a border around it - in your artwork, let's say you want the orange color not to get affected. Right-click on it and choose 'Exclude Colors'. When you do that, you will see that the orange color moves to the bottom of the list and there is no arrow in front of it. Like this:

  • Why is Recolor Artwork panel making bad color conversion choices?

A Color Group is dbl clicked in the Swatches Panel.
    The Recolor Artwork Panel opens.
Selecting the button that 'Limits the Color Group to Colors in the Swatch Library', 'Pantone+Solid Color' is chosen.
Often, a singlePantone color is badly chosen... note the 3rd and far right color choices...
is there a variable in Illustrator or a Color Profile issue that needs adjusted?

    Scott W...
your last reply... my initial 'Color Group' is its own 'Harmony Rule'...
but I did try doing the same conversion using
a different and more accurate result using 'Pantone+SolidUncoated' as the destination (see below)
Still convinced it's a Color Settings issue.
I'd like the automated solution has to be more accurate... I can see the difference.

  • Apply transparency to color in "recolor artwork" tool box

Is there any way to apply transparency to a color when using the recolor artwork box?
I am dealing with a lot of puppet warp and gradients so it would be nice if I could use the recolor artwork box,
instead of looking for all the colors manually.
As you can see from the screenshot, there is a lot of colors to go through

No. There's no option to alter transparency in Recolor Artwork.

  • Illustrator CS5 Recolor Artwork question

I was passed down a file of a old logo from a friend in .ai format. He wants me to change the colors from Red to Blue. Seems pretty easy, but it has 2082 colors in it!!!
I am a fairly novice user and wondered if someone could help me with an easier way to accomplish this without losing the details of the gradients this logo has.
I have atteched a image of the Recolor Artwork screen in edit mode that shows the color wheel.
Is there any way to just rotate the entire wheel thus moving all colors at once?
What is the best way to accomplish this color change?
Thanks in advance for anyones help.

Click on the link-icon to connect all colors. Then move them together by dragging one of them. You might want to read in the manual (press F1). You might want to reduce the number of colors, which is also possbile with "Recolor art"

  • Recolor artwork

Using Illustrator CS4, is it possible to select a Live Paint object, and in the Recolor Artwork dialog, recolor the colors using the Randomly Recolor button -- but prevent just one of the colors from changing? I'm looking for a way to lock one of the colors but randomly change the others.

In the Edit module of the Recolor Artwork dialog, click the arrow between the current color you want locked and its "New" color. The arrowhead will disappear, leaving what just looks like a hyphen. Then, set the Colors: menu, (above the New color column), to All. Your "locked" color will now have no arrow and no target New Color. Randomize will affect all others. I'm not sure why it works this way, but I just did it 10 times with the same result.

  • Can't get "Edit Colors" to work in Illustrator CC

Hi. My boss just added Illustrator CC to my mac.
I'm not sure why, but I can't get "Edit Colors" to work in Illustrator CC.
When I select an object and try to reassign colors in the "Edit Colors" menu, the submenus are greyed out.
It works fine on Illustrator CS5, so I'm not sure what the problem is in CC.
Is this a bug or just a limitation of the CC trial period?
Can anyone please help with this?

OK, so Trial Period isn't the problem? Thanks for that info.
I'm working with customer supplied files and often have to reassign colors to artwork for different projects.
I can assign colors with the color panel, but complex designs containing multiple pieces and layers can take for-ev-er to reassign colors that way.
Like I said, "edit colors" works fine in CS5, so I'm trying to figure out why it's not working in CC.
Appreciate any help the forum members can provide.

  • How to save custom presets in Recolor Artwork?

I'm using Illustrator CC 2014 18.1 on a Windows machine and I would like to uncheck the 'preserve white and black' boxes in the Color Reduction options of Recolor Artwork and save it as a preset. PFA, the image for reference. The default settings load up every time illustrator is launched. Having to change it every time is pretty inconvenient.
Also, have the issues with actions that use scripts been resolved? My actions that have scripts do not load on every launch.
    Thank you for your help.

    Hi Monika
Tried reading the prefs file, and the only thing I could find closest to the Color Reduction Options panel was this:
    /ColorHarmony {
        /HarmonyDialogRecolorArtCheckbox 1
        /ShowStorage 1
        /ShowAdjustSliders 0
        /SliderColorSpace 3
        /mapMethodPreserveSpots 1
        /mapMethodApplyToAll 1
        /combineTintsOnExtraction 1
        /ShowHideColorGuide 1
        /VariationTypeColorGuide 0
looks like the Recolor Artwork panel with the Recolor Artwork Checkbox option. Any suggestions?
@Ton, have filed the same. Looking forward to seeing it sorted out.

  • Cannot recolor artwork for all objects in Vector?

    Hello All,
I used Live Trace to create a Vector. On some of the objects in Vector I can recolor artwork, but others there is no options to recolor. Does anyone know why and is it possible to see recolor options for all objects?

Recolor artwork is a great tool for recoloring specific colors in the artwork without having to select specific objects and and change the swatch used for that object. If you select all, and enter the recolor function you should see all the swatches for all the selected art, and change a swatch color throughout the artwork. There is much more to this function, but for what you're doing this is a quick easy way to effect color changes to all objects colored with a specific swatch. Check the on line help, Help>Illustrator Help for more on recoloring.
Here is a Tutorial if you're intrested too.
