Mesh tool - straight lines

I was wondering if there was a way to make the lines of the gradient mesh tool straight by default. I know you can drag in the handles so that you don't get curves between mesh points but every time I add a new mesh line it creates more mesh points with long handles and I have to drag them in to the mesh point for each one. It's incredibly frustrating.

Use the Crazy Lines Tool to fix the problem
Seriously though, how about a screenshot so we can see what crazy lines look like.

  • Mesh tool - crazy lines

    Hi,
I used mesh tool on a non square or circle shape. The shape looks a bit as a dinausore.
I got some crazy lines. Some of them are even outside the shape!
So, it doesn't make nice color spot.
I tried to change the crazy lines in moving the anchor line, but it doesn't work.
Is there a way to modified the crazy lines?
    thanks

  • Straight line tool?

I recently used the clone tool to edit out the background of an image and leave the stone cross highlighted against the sky. The cross has very straight edges and even with a steady hand and lots of zoom, I couldn't get the edge of the cross really straight. I bought a Bamboo Pen & Touch but that didn't really help. Either I need a straight line tool or perhaps 'detect edges' but I can't find a line tool and detect edges doesn't seem to apply to the clone tool.
    Any ideas anyone?

No straight line tool in Aperture. You'll need a photo editor for that like GIMP or PS. And as you've seen the clone tool doesn't have a 'detect edges' checkbox.
Aperture isn't really meant for the type of photo editing work you seem to be doing. You can make do but again a photo editor would really be the way to go.

  • Why does my Wacom tablet only make straight lines with the pencil & brush tool even WITHOUT shift?

I have Photoshop CS3 on Mac OSX 10.5.8 on a white MacBook and I'm using a Wacom CTE-630, and I always had the correct drivers.
Yesterday I discovered that the brush and pencil tools were incapable of doing anything but a dot or a straight line while I used my Wacom tablet. Using those tools with the touchpad works perfectly! Curves and squiggles abound! But for some reason I can't do it with my tablet.
And I yes I tried downloading the latest drivers from the Wacom website... to no avail.
After looking through forums I discovered that it was a problem experienced by users of tablets of other brands, I couldn't find any mention of Wacom tablets having this issue. And then I saw a thread somewhere that mentioned holding shift created straight lines! So I immediately thought that perhaps photoshop was functioning in reverse or maybe my shift button was broken...
So I pressed shift, and something different happened, if I made a dot on the page a line would automatically appear, connecting that dot to the previous dot I had made. Which is in contrast to the issue I had been having which goes something like this:
If I try to make any curved lines, a dot will appear where I first made contact on the page and then when I release the pen from the tablet a straight line will go from there to the dot at the start of the line. In other words, a dot appears when I start a line and no matter what I do with the line after that, a straight line goes from where I ended the line to where I started it!! ARGHHHH!!
And it turns out It's not a Wacom problem, or it doesn't seem to be, because it works fine with the brush tool in Illustrator CS3.
So I came to the conclusion it was Photoshop that was at fault. I found nothing on these forums related to my issue.
I hope someone can help. Because I was really itching to start digitally painting again. =(
    Thanks in advance!!

Yes I did solve the problem!
Thanks to everyone that suggested things, but none of them worked. In the end it was Wacom, yes... WACOM that solved the problem. Even though it was an Adobe Photoshop issue as far as I could tell. So thank you Wacom, you helped me when I needed it most.
So now to the vital solution:
"Thank you for your recent enquiry regarding pen tool in Adobe Photoshop CS3.
Please try the step below for reset CS3
For MAC, please hold pressing command + alt+ shift, then open Photoshop.
Get the CS3 update. Start CS3 while holding.
If the problem remains, uninstall and reinstall Adobe Photoshop CS3 again."
Worked the first time for me. So spread the word! This issue shall trouble people no more, a solution has been found!

  • After Effect CS5.5_Pen tool problem: No Handles display, can't creat straight line

    Hi,
I wonder why in After effects CS5.5, the pen tool doesn't work correctly!
    1. "no handles display", ex: when I click an area whilst holding the mouse and clicking / or hold Alt and clicking the point in order to see the handles.
    2. cannot make "straight line", neither can I make 45 degree coner while holding the shift key clicking.
I coud use it before, but now it no longer work. I tried "the pen tool" in photoshop cs5.1 it works very well.
    Is there any solution?
    Thanks

    Thanks Rick,
    1. Do you have the View Options setup correctly?
Yes, I guess. Beacuse everything is checked.
2.Have you hidden the layer controls?
    No.
    Are you using Roto Bezier?
    No.
3....If it's not try trashing your prefs.
How do you trash the prefs?
I didn't modify any setting in the prefs.
Btw, what does that title stand for "community professional"? Are you working for Adobe?

  • My pen tool won't draw straight lines

When I click the pen tool the cursor shows the pen tool with the "x".  When I click to create the first point nothing happens.  If I click and drag it will create a point, but I don't want curves.  I want a straight line.
    Anyone else have this problem?
    I'm on OSX Yosemite 10.10.3

The problem was Google Chrome browser!  As soon as I quit Chrome my pen tool started working again.  I didn't even need to restart Fireworks.  I wonder if it is a conflict with one of my plugins/add ons.  Most likely.
UPDATE - I did narrow it down to one specific Google Chrome extension.  It was "Google Play Music"

  • Patch tool is constained on straight lines

both my patch tool and lasso constrain to straight lines even though i am drawing freehand shapes. anyone know how to reverse this?

  • Resetting rectangle tool to straight lines

The rectangle tool suddenly started to default to producing curved lines. Seems to default to about a 9% roundness for some reason. would like to know how to reset to it's defaults i.e. I want straight lines again.

That's peculiar. Mine defaults to 0% for every new shape, no matter what the previous shape's setting.
Have you tried quitting the application and/or shutting down and restarting your computer? If that doesn't work, then you might consider deleting your cache and/or preferences. On a Mac, these can be found at user/Library/Preferences/Adobe Fireworks CS6.

  • Erase tool is leaving dots, not straight line

I just need to figure what else I reset because I hit reset all.
That just returns all the tools to their original settings. No big deal.

  • How to control the mesh tool?

I am wanting to use the mesh tool but I need to know how to control my lines. I want a starting point and an end point but when I click the starting point is decided by me but the end point is decided on its own, and it is not the end point I want. I want a straight line (with some curves) but I am getting a diagnol line. How can a control this?

This is an image of what I've been doing. See my lines. I wasn't even getting straight lines but I fixed it up someway.
Now look at their image. The lines are going perfectly in the direction they are wanting here. How are they doing it.

  • Mesh Tool on Irregular Shape

When I add a horizontal mesh line on my non-square object I am left with lines that swoop outside the boundaries of the object. Why does it do this? How can I prevent it? I've tried dragging the handles but they result in drastic changes that cannot be predicted. I've also tried using the convert point tool because all i really want are some perfectly straight horizontal lines that I can manipulate using the add point tool. I don't need beziers and want to rid of them.
Here are some screenshots of what I am experiencing. Notice in the 2nd how the green line curves outside the boundaries of my object.

The mesh tool does a terrible job on many shapes. My rule is any shape with a concavity requires masking. Use a rectangle or oval for your mesh object and mask that with the path you are trying to use.

  • Mesh Tool distorting artwork.

After I finished doing my design using the "Mesh Tool" and reduced the size of the hole piece, the Mesh is converted from organic shapes into straight lines. Which makes all my work useless.
Does any one knows how to fixe that?

I sure wish they'd FIX THIS BUG!
Only solutions I know of... use the scale tool rather than free transform. Use the Effect > transform in some cases. Go back to CS2.
It was presented quite some time ago... immediately after the 13.0.0 release. 3 updates later.. no help. *sigh*

  • Please help me! I am struggling with the mesh tool!

So I want to make this chair look like it does in the picture, but I cant! There is a chapter in my Illustrator CS3 book explaining how to use gradient mesh and mesh tool, but it doesnt help me at all. I am clueless!   The tutorial says that I can create points in the mesh simply by clicking with the mesh tool within an object, but when I try to do that, the pointer is "crossed out". I can only add extra points on lines or edges, but not on empty space within an object. What gives? Why is it that others can do it an I cant? Forgive me if I sound a little too upset, but I've been struggling with this for days and I cannot find an answer.
In this tutorial right here: http://www.layersmagazine.com/illustrator-gradient-mesh-tool.html the guy just clicks in empty spaces creating intersections. In my case it is impossible.
PS: Please look at an attached file and tell me what would be the best way to go about coloring this chair. Maybe I am doing this completely wrong? (I only started learning illustrator about 5 weeks ago)
Sorry for the background template being of poor quality, but this was taken from a book and scanned, so it's the best I could do.

You know something I think there should be a behavioral change in this case. To my way of thinking this option should automatically be disabled if you select the Mesh tool. If for some reason you want the mesh tool not to behave the way there might be a toggle or a double click to get the preferences for the tool 's behavior itself. I can see where this behavior can be useful but there needs to be a toggle.
Selecting the anchors for adding color with out accidentally creating a new mesh division is good thing but you need to be able to work both ways.
What do you think Scott Weichert you use the tool extensively, am i wrong?

  • Why can I only paint straight lines in Photoshop CS6?

I am trying to paint something that I have wanted to for a while now, and Photoshop is presenting some troubles for me. I can not paint curves, and instead, only straight lines without pen pressure (Size, opacity, the likes.) The result of my efforts is the same as if I were to draw a dot (click once in other words), press shift, and make another dot somewhere else. It's just straight lines no matter what.
I am currently on an Emachines computer running Windows 7, Photoshop CS6 and this is the first time I have bothered with the brush tool in Photoshop.
I hope this information is useful for someone to help me so that I may paint freely. Thank you for reading.

It is possible that the Shift key is stuck on your keyboard.  If you add a Type layer and some text, you'll see if that is the case or not.  Unlikely I'd have thought, but things can get jammed between the keys, and you need to eliminate this possibility before moving on to other possibilities.
Oh, I see. No, the shift key is not the problem it seems. I have a feeling that it's the brush I'm using.
