Message application between Macs on internal local network

I’m looking for an application that will allow interchange of short messages (copy/pasteable) between Macs on my home network via Ethernet/router/Airport. At the moment, I use email.

You can use iChat via Bonjour on your local network to communicate in much the same fashion as you'd use it via internet based services. I even found a nice short video demonstrating the ease of setup:

    I want to transfer specific applications between macs but Migration Assistant doesn't offer that option.  Any suggestions?

    If the apps were downloaded from the App Store, you can re download on all your other authorized Macs for free.
    How to re download apps from the Mac App Store:
    Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
    Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
    Select which apps you want to re download. Then right or control click where you see Installed  then click Install.
    Make sure and use the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.

  • Communicating between Air apps on local network?

    I am trying to build an AIR application that allows communication on a local network only.  Can I use the Local Connection to achieve this or is that only to communicate between apps on a single machine.  The functionality I am trying to achieve is simple check in/out app to let users know when someone is already working in a folder.   I already have the functionality built for this, I just need to be able to broadcast events to another AIR app on a local network.  Can anyone help or shot this down?  Thanks in advance.

    You are right: you can only use LocalConnection for communication between AIR applications (and SWF content in browsers) on a single machine.
    You may want to build a server application that the other AIR applications communicate with via a socket connection.

  • ITunes 7 - syncing between Mac and PC using network

    I thought there was an announcement today that Apple had made it easier to copy your iTunes library between Mac and PC with or without using an iPod.
    I have not been able to find such an option in the iTunes 7 menus on my mac or pc. I could copy the library using standard network file copy, but then I would lose the playlists and settings.
    Anybody know the new way to copy/sync a mac and pc itunes library while keeping playlists and settings?

    If your family uses Windows® and has or will add the latest version of AIM® to their PC, launch iChat on your Mac, add their buddy name(s) (AIM Screen Name) to your iChat Buddy List, and contact them like you would any other iChat contact. If you need help adding buddy names, search your Mac's iChat > Help for "Adding people to the buddy list" (without the quotation marks).
    If your family has problems setting up or using AIM®, or if they choose not to use it, both you and your family can download and install your respective versions of Skype and use Skype as your cross-platform video chat application. Skype offers comprehensive help at their website, including a dedicated Skype Forum. For those who have trouble connecting iChat and AM® (some do), Skype currently seems to offer the easiest to use, free, cross-platform video chat connections.

  • IMAP service not allowing message to be sent when off local network

    Hi,
    I almost always use my laptop along with mail.app on my home network that has OS X server with the mail service running
    When I leave my network, however, and try to send a message using mail.app, it shows an error saying
    "The server responded: <[email protected]>: Relay access denied"
    I relay through smtp.comcast.net
    It prompts me to select another from a list (sending mail works fine in squirrel mail in browser though regardless of location).
    I can receive mail in mail.app regardless of locations too, I just can't seem to send messages while away from local network.

    The problem you are having is caused by Comcast rejecting any SMTP relay requests that do not originate from a comcast.net connection.
    Your OS Xserver is connected to the comcast.net network, so it can relay SMTP through smtp.comcast.net.
    Try contacting Comcast and see if you can authenticate (username/password) to their SMTP server while you are on the road.
    Hope this helps!

  • Drag/Drop playlists between shared PCs via local network.

    Prior to Itunes ver 11.0.0.163, I was able to copy thru the drag/drop process a Itunes Home Shared playlist of music files on one computer - to another Home Sharing enabled  Itunes playlist, on another computer via local network. How is this done now?

    It appears with the release of Itunes ver 11.0.1.02 that this bug has been corrected.  Please close out this thread.  Thanks.

  • Want to share application data between Mac's on home network.

    Hello,
    We currently have one iMac at home and I would like to start using separate logins for different family members, but I want to be able to share applications (Mail, Address Book, ICal, iPhoto, etc.) across accounts. Can it be done? I would hate to have to set up all the email account information again or have duplicate copies of the large iPhoto library. Or two separate versions of address book and iCal.
    This issue is also the #1 reason why I hesitate to purchase another iMac or MacBook for our house. I want to be able to be sitting downstairs on the MacBook and access the, for example iCal and not have to run 2 different versions and worry about synching them.
    Any input is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Brad.

    Hi Brad, OSX is setup to keep all this account info seperate, but on iPhoto for example, you can...

  • Mail/Message Overlap between Mac Mini and Macbook Sharing Home Network

    Somehow e-mails that I am writing on my mac mini from my g-mail account are showing up on my wife's macbook air as if they were being sent from her work account. On the left of the dock I can see the mail icon with what looks like an Airplay symbol imposed on it. Something similar happens when she uses iMessage from the macbook, although both of these issues only started today. We share an Apple ID but do not have Back to My Mac enabled. Any ideas?

    That's Handoff. At least one of you should sign out of iCloud in its preference pane and sign in with a different ID.

  • How do I transfer Mail Message Rules between Macs?

    How do I transfer Mail Message rules from an iMac running OS X 10.6.8 to an iMac running OS X 10.8.5? The names of the plist files don't match.

    The easiest way to accomplish this is to *create a new admin account* in the System Preferences/Accounts Pref Pane. Once the new admin account *(make sure the Allow user to administer this computer is checked in the new account)* is set up and performing like it should (by logging into it and verifying that you can actually administer the computer), change your primary account (the account that owns your emails) to a standard account by un-checking the *Allow user to administer this computer* in the Accounts Pref Pane. You can still administer the computer with your standard account, you will have to provide your admin login and password in the Authentication dialog boxes.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can't find a solution to back up 30 macs on a local network

    Our small company has been struggling with back ups ever since we have been owning more than 20 Macs or so.
    We have been able to perform backups on a few parallel Time Capsule for a while, but are looking for a more professional/industrial solution now that our team runs around 30 iMacs and MacBooks.
    Performing a few tricks on each machine has allowed us to perform back ups on a NAS appliance for a while, but this solution has proven unstable, as the disk, after a while, can't be found by Time Machine.
    Would anyone have a more positive experience running other solutions – that I am afraid would commonly run in the Windows/Linux world! Any hard/software recommendations and/or links to useful articles?
    Many thanks
    Matt

    Hi, and welcome to the forums.
    It sounds like you need a central Mac, running Mac OS X Server.
    I'm not very familiar with it, but you can control Time Machine on all the clients from it or let them do their own, and they can all back up to the server.
    Hers's the whole manual. See page 241 for Time Machine setup: http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/UserManagementv10.6.pdf
    There's much more there, of course. For questions, etc., see the Mac OS X Server forums, at: http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=96

  • Applescript to shutdown computers over local network

    Hey guys!
    I'm looking for a way to automate shutdown of 2 macs over a local network from a remote mac. I'm currently doing this by screen sharing in and shutting down both macs manually.
    I have this untested theory that I could use my very basic knowledge of apple script to create a shutdown script on each mac and use an alias on the remote mac to run the script. However I am sure there is a much better way of doing this, I'm just lacking the know how! The script I want would ideally do as follows.
    Run script from remote to Mac 1 and Mac 2 over network
    Quit all running applications on Mac 1 and Mac 2
    Shut down Mac 1 and Mac 2 in 5 minutes
    If any one could help me imporve my laziness my giving me some pointers on this or even letting me know if its possible it would greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!
    C

    Introduction:
    I have tried a few things over my local network. My attempt to run a remote AppleScript nearly shutdown the Mac I was activating it from. There are probably ways around this but I decided to try something else.
    The following is a very stable solution once you have got it working. Each Mac to be shut down watches a folder called shut-down and if its contents change the Mac shuts down in one minute.
    I am sure this can be improved upon.
    Let me know how you get on.
    Permissions:
    It is simple to do all this as root user as described below but without 'with administrator privileges' at the end of the AppleScript.
    If doing it as admin use the AppleScript as below. The plist may need permissions set to root wheel.
    The shut-down folder will need appropriate sharing permissions.
    Create plist etc:
    open TextEdit
    create a new document
    set TextEdit format to plain text
    copy plist contents below
    paste into the TextEdit document
    save as shut-down.plist
    put document in folder /Library/LaunchAgents on each Mac to be shut down
    create folders entitled shut-down at the root of Macs to be shut down
    run launch AppleScript below on each Mac to be shut down
    Future changes to the shut-down folder's contents will shut down the Mac.
    Contents of shut-down.plist:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN"
    "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
              <key>Label</key>
              <string>shut-down</string>
              <key>ProgramArguments</key>
              <array>
                        <string>shutdown</string>
                        <string>-h</string>
                        <string>+1</string>
              </array>
              <key>WatchPaths</key>
              <array>
                        <string>/shut-down</string>
              </array>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    Launch AppleScript:
    Put the following on one line;
    do shell script "launchctl unload -w /Library/LaunchAgents/shut-down.plist;  launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchAgents/shut-down.plist" with administrator privileges

  • If remote access is allowed on the server, Then can my users on the local network access this server by ie

    Dear all,
    If my server is enabled for the remote desktop connection, then the users on the local network can access my server IIS services by entering the IP address of my server in the IE (http/https) on the local network only.
    I went to control panel>>system>>Allow Remote desktop Connection>>with network level authentication.
    Now If my team wants to access this server not by opening the Remote Desktop Connection, rather by entering the IP address of my server on the IE and access the resources offered.
    Is it possible by this way,
    Or is there any other method to do so.
    Regards,
    Ahmed

    3. My web Developer is installing an application on the server for our department team. To test this application running, he wants to access this application through the local machine from browser (rather than logging in through the remote desktop connection).
    4. He wants this application to run on the local network only.
    5. He wants me to do some setup, that he must be able to enter the IP address of the server in the browsers address bar on his local machine and test the functionality of his application on the local network.
    If this is the requirements of the developer, I guess he wants you to configure IIS.
    You can do a test, whether IIS is working properly.
    Log on to server, enter https://localhost or http://IP_address_of_the_server don't know whether some ports are configured in order for your IIS to work.
