Message display error in Apple Mail

Hi There,
I bought a new Macbook Pro the other day, and synced all my email accounts to Apple Mail. Since then, I have noticed an intermittent error in some messages. Where there is usually text, such as the message body, or the sender's email address, I see a row of blocks with the letter A inside them. This has only been happening in the new Mac. In my old one, I used Apple Mail with the same accounts and never saw this issue.
Has anybody seen this error before? I think it's just mail from my Gmail account, but I might be wrong.
Thanks

I checked under View>Nessage>Raw Source: Content-Type: text/html;
charset="UTF-8"
When I changed the setting to UTF-8, it still didn't work, nor did it work with any of the other settings. It is not a question of corrupted fonts. This problem occurs on my brand new MacBook Pro at home and on the Intel iMac in my office. The former is on OS X 10.6.2 the latter on OS X 10.5.8.
I checked the same e-mail on Entourage where it had the same problem. In other e-mails the apostrophe displays correctly which leads me to the conclusion that MacWorld has a problem encoding its messages properly.
Thanks for all the responses to to this question.
Hans

    Some have reported success simply by reinstalling the update.

    Or download and apply, or reapply, the 10.6.8 Combo update first, then apply the Security Update again.

    I'd suggest starting with the simplest of these fixes, so look them over first.

  • How do I get gmail to display correctly in Apple Mail?

    We sync our Google email to Apple's Mail app on the Mac, iPad, and iPhone. The mail does not display correctly, the text keeps going and cuts off so you have to swipe to the right to reveal the rest of the message. We are syncing gmail through IMAP. Does anyone know how to get Gmail to display correctly with Apple Mail?

    Same here. I'm using office 2013. It is hard to believe, That there is still no solution for that problem. Parallels desktop and office 2013 lets you dictate, Though there is still no way to get the  new line or new paragraph
    command to get to work in word or outlook. Do you think this isn't a apple issue or a Microsoft issue? On Windows in the ordinary editor the commands work well.
    I actually changed to mac for this killerfeature and i really need it. Now it does not work in the most common office app..

  • Duplicate Messages in Sent Folder--Apple mail and gmail

    I recently started using apple mail for my two gmail accounts.
    I have properly configured all folders (highlight "trash" from gmail and click use this mailbox for..)
    since i have two gmail accounts, i did this for both of them.
    i did a couple of test emails from my main gmail account. now, in my sent folder it's showing duplicates for what i've sent, one from my main gmail account, one from my second gmail account.
    I've tried to uncheck the box where it saves messages on server in preferences, and that seemed to work. however, i checked on my iphone and my sent message showed up..not in my main gmail account sent mail, but in my secondary gmail account sent mail.
    can this be fixed?

    The drive being referenced in this error, ( /Volumes/Nexus-Heaven1/Mailboxes/Splurben.mbox ) has never been a primary Mail store, my Mail store has always been in its default user folder, I wouldn't even know where to begin to tell Mail to move the primary mail store. I had a Time Machine backup drive called "Nexus-Heaven" which died over a year ago. It was always strictly a Time Machine backup drive. It may be that at some point I restored mail from this Time Machine backup.
    Does anyone know why this would happen or how I would 'satisfy' Apple Mail to get rid of these errors and the constant attempted synchronisations that never finish?

  • Not all Google imap messages synching with my Apple mail

    I've been using my MBP's Apple mail to access my Google imap mail for 3 or 4 years.  No problems until recently when, in Apple mail, I did searches for old e-mail messages and couldn't find them, but when I accessed a web browser to access my Google imap mail, my searches there were successful in finding the old e-mail messages.  My inference: not all of my Google imap mail messages are synching over to my MBP's Apple mail.
    Any suggestions on what I might do to guarantee that my Google imap mail messages  synch over to my MBP's Apple mail?

    I figured out a solution and it works.  Using a browser to access my Google mail, I marked as "unread" all mail for the previous 12 months.  As a result, my Apple mail uploaded/read of those e-mails again.  A pleasant surprise: in my Apple mail, these re-uploaded/read e-mails did not show up marked as new.  In my Apple mail now, I can find those previously missing old e-mails when I new search for them.  Caution: it took a long time (days) for the imap operations to do all of its behind-the-scenes tasks, like setting flags or caching attachments or doing something with directories, and so forth; however, all of this was invisible and my Apple mail was fully functional throughout.

  • Errors in Apple Mail with gmail

    Over the last few weeks, I've noticed a sharp increase in the number of Gmail (IMAP flavor), such as this:
    "Mail was unable to open this mailbox on the server "imap.gmail.com".
    The server error encountered was: Unknown Mailbox: INBOX (Failure"
    This occurs when I try to move messages out of my inbox into other folders on the IMAP server (via Mail).
    I also have gotten numerous errors where my username and password are rejected.
    Quitting and restarting Mail usually takes care of things but only temporarily.
    Anyone else?

    This has been bugging me for as long as I've been using IMAP on my Google Apps accounts (4 of them; happens to all of them occasionally).
    Just found this: http://www.reedolsen.com/?p=32
    I haven't tried it yet, but one of my accounts is bound to act up in the next 24 hours so I'll give it a shot and report back if I have any luck.

  • Gmail messages not showing in Apple Mail

    My employer just got me a brand new 15" MBP (Oct. 2013 model), running Mavericks 10.9.1.  I'm going to use my old 2009 13" MBP for home use.  I used Mail.app to view my work email and gmail accounts on my old computer.  I had gmail configured in POP, with the idea of not deleting any messages from the gmail server so I could go back if I ever needed to to find a message.  Well now I want to keep my email synced between devices, so I configured gmail as IMAP.  After about 3 days of continuous downloading, I had the IMAP gmail set up (over 50,000 messages).  It was working fine.
    I also have a lot of old messages from an old work email account that I like to keep in Mail.app for reference.  I imported these from my old Mac to the new mac.  No problem.  But after I did that, my gmail mailbox showed an unread message count of 50,000 + whatever it was, but no messages were displayed.  Unfortunately, I don't have a timemachine backup for this new computer.  I deleted the Envelope Index file in the Library/Mail/V2/MailData folder, as someone suggested in a different post and re-imported all messages, but this didnt work.
    I have a time machine external drive with my old computer's backups.   With the backup drive plugged into my new computer and with Mail.app active, I can click on the time machine icon at the top and select "Browse other backup disks...".  I select the old backup drive and it will first show "Today" with the Mail.app open.  I can see all my gmail messsages here.  Time machine says "Click restore to recover the inbox for Gmail"  or something like that.  But the "Restore" button is grayed out, cause it's today.
    I messed around with .plist and things in the Mail libraries, but nothing changed.  Somewhere in my messing around with things, the message count went away.  the mailbox setting have not been changed from what they were previously.  I know all my messages are still on my mac cause the "[email protected]" folder is still 8.51 GB, which is what it should be.
    I was able to import all the gmail emails in to mail via File->Import Mailboxes..., but this puts everything in it's own Import folder and not in the gmail inbox.
    Also I can't receive new messages in gmail via Mail.app.
    My work email (also set up as IMAP) is working just fine.
    I don't want to remove the gmail account and reinstall, spending another 3 or 4 days downloaded all the messages (I don't know why it took that long).
    Any help is appreciated.

    I "fixed" the problem by copying the entire mail folder from the library on my old mac onto my new mac, replacing the newer mail folder.  My old mac had gmail working just fine.  Now everything works on my new.  This didn't really fix the problem though.  I'm not sure what was wrong with it.

  • Most recent read message displaying as unread in mail.app v4.5

    When a new mail message comes in and I read it, more than 50% of the time it will remain marked as unread until I click on a different mailbox and then click back to my Inbox. Repeatedly viewing the message or closing and re-opening the mail.app window doesn't help, only clicking on a different mailbox and then clicking back to my Inbox seems to get mail.app back on track. This has been going on for months. I have reset the computer multiple times during that interval to no effect, but have not attempted any further problem-solving.
    I am using a mid 2010 MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.8

    The recommended size limit for a mailbox with Jaguar or Panther Mail is 1GB and for Tiger Mail, 2GB.
    Check Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4 Mail: Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty.
    I avoid allowing any mailbox to exceed 500MB in size and use the Rebuild Mailbox function on the most active mailboxes on a regular basis - once a month or so depending on activity and I haven't experienced any problems.

  • When sending email I get this error message: An error occurred sending mail: The mail server sent an incorrect greeting: Cannot establish SSL with SMTP server

    This issue has popped up before then went away after I switched to SSL setings as suggested by my website host. Or...was it pure coincidence? Same problem today and I haven't made any changes since the above mentioned and have had many successful emails sent. Can't reply or send emails and the draft gets removed from the draft folder even if I saved it before hitting send. Thank you!

    Thank you Matt. I'm sure this will be frustrating ...but the more I think about this problem there more info I have to share. The emails I write that do not get sent do end up in my "sent" folder but never reach the recipient. And, most perplexing, the issue/problem is sporadic. It was coming and going before I switched over to the SSL/TLS option in T-bird. And...since the switch it has reappeared and disappeared. I have made zero changes other than the above mentioned. I did get a security update today for T-bird perhaps this will help?
    I read your link, thank you.
    I obviously don't understand how these systems work. I'm baffled how an issue like this can come and go...

  • Empty messages in apple mail

    One of the email lists that I subscribe to frequently contains messages with images. It's a moderately high volume list with 20-30 messages per day. Inevitably, a few of those messages with attached images (according to the paperclip icon in the messages list) will arrive with no headers and no raw data. The display of the message in Apple Mail shows only the sender's name/address and the subject, nothing else such as the usual warning, "This message contains no content."
    The people who run the mailing list don't think that the problem is on their end so I am here asking whether this  is happening to anyone else and, if so, is there a way to correct it.

    Thanks to Linc Davis and dot.com for the replies.
    Here is some add'l info that may or may not shed light on this issue.
    I tried to follow Lin's suggestion to see if the message was intact in web view. Unfortunately, I was unable to find it. This is an Office 365 account. Apparently, messages are deleted as they are sent to my MaxOS X 10.10.1 account.  I could only find two messages for today when Apple Maile shows more than a100 incoming. Thus, I was unable to cross  check in this way.
    However, I was able to replace this issue o/s of the mailing list server and Office 365. What I did was log into my iCloud web account and use Pages to send an email with an ePub attachment. I sent his twice, once to my @me.com address and one to my Office 365 account.  The one sent to my iCloud account arrived intact. The one sent to my Office 365 account was empty – no attachment whatever. So this issue has to do with attachments as handled by Office 365.
    Unlike the previous cases, I was able to see both the Headers and Raw versions of the email.
    I see no clues in these data sets but include them here in case I have missed something. Here goes:

  • Apple Mail in 10.6.8 not displaying attachments

    I am unable to get consistent results on displaying attachments from Apple Mail on 10.6.8 with Exchange Server 2007 SP3 RU4. Attachments sent from an Outlook 2007 client on the same exchange server are not displayed in Apple Mail. The message shows no sign of an attachment. The problem with this issue, is it is not consistant. If I forward the e-mail message from my iPhone to myself, I get the attachment in Mail. It shows up in my iPhone correctly. I am connected to Exchange in Mail via the standard EWS (Exchange Web Services). The original message doesn't show any attachment in Mail. But after 20 or so minutes, the attachement show in the message body, but not in the header up top. Just driving me crazy. Is there anyone that can point me in a direction on who to contact on this issue to find out how it can be fixed?
    Thanks,
    Nate

    I'm having the same problem and it is driving me crazy. My main email account at work is on an Exchange 2007 server. When I send emails with attachments (using Mail 4.5), I get people replying telling me that I haven't included the attachments. However, I know I have as the attachments appear in the Sent Items and I have also tested it by sending blind copies to a Gmail account and they turn up there even when the recipient is telling me that they cannot see the attachment. Even worse, people send me emails with attachments and the attachments either just do not appear at all or they appear intermittently. Whatever the problem, this really isn't good enough - how can I work with such unreliability. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas for how to fix or work around this I'd be very grateful!

  • Apple mail not showing all the messages?

    In Apple mail, for my icloud account, I have some mailboxes which show the wrong number of messages, it shows too few.
    As an example, a mailbox contains 150 messages, but apple mail reports there are only 146.
    I rebuilt the mailbox and let apple mail do its thing. In the activity window I can see there are 150 messages. Yet, once apple mail has finished rebuilding the mailbox, it still tells me there are 146 messages. What's going wrong? Why would apple mail not show all the messages while in the activity window it clearly shows it knows there are 150?

    Solved!
    This was too weird to be real. Apple mail does not show messages it believes to be duplicates, and buy, does it make big mistakes in deciding what are duplicate messages and what not! Some of my mailboxes had over 100 "duplicates" not showing according to apple mail.
    I found a solution thanks to this topic:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/18265121#18265121
    defaults delete com.apple.mail AlwaysShowDuplicates
    does yield an error in 10.8.2 ( Domain (com.apple.mail) not found. Defaults have not been changed. )
    defaults write com.apple.mail AlwaysShowDuplicates -bool true
    Does work brilliantly though!

  • Apple Mail showing multi-part messages incorrectly

    All of a sudden, in Lion only, messages with attachments in Apple Mail are being shown as raw source, and I can't extract the attachments (and I can barely read the message). Here's an excerpt that shows what I mean:
    --Apple-Mail=_9C72CECF-1C52-4B2A-ACB7-FB8F9282EAB6
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
    Content-Disposition: inline;
              filename=Keynote.png
    Content-Type: image/png;
              name="Keynote.png"
    Content-Id: <CF71EAE0-CDBB-4866-9ACD-1387EACD3EE4>
    iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAABQAAAAMgCAYAAAB8mM/7AAAKMWlDQ1BJQ0MgUHJvZmlsZQAASImd
    lndUU9kWh8+9N71QkhCKlNBraFICSA29SJEuKjEJEErAkAAiNkRUcERRkaYIMijggKNDkbEiioUB
    And so on. That's a PNG image attached to the message, but I can't extract the image. There's no way to get a different view of the message; none of alternatives under View > Message are enabled. If I use a different computer, running Snow Leopard, I can receive this same message and it displays normally (with the image shown inline) and I can extract the attachment. What might be the cause of this? Thanks.

    It's not just you.  I'm having the same problem -- Gmail, IMAP, subject lines matched with wrong email body.
    And I've noticed that in my case, it seems that (at least?) two emails have exchanged the subjects/message index lines and their bodies.
    Rebuilding or deleting accounts or deleting the envelope index doesn't help -- it always comes back in a day or two, often with the same emails.
