Message from Disk Utility: iBook HD "Volume needs repair"

I just ran the "Verify Disk" routine and got this error message: "First Aid Failed" because "the underlying task reported failure on exit".
In verifying my "iBook HD" volume, the following errors were reported:
(1) "incorrect number of thread records" in the Catalog file.
(2) "Volume Bit Map needs minor repair"
(3) "Invalid volume free block count (should be 7719070 instead of 7719077)"
(4) The volume iBook HD needs to be repaired.
I would have run the "Repair Disk" routine, but its button wasn't highlighted, so I couldn't do this.
What to do now?
(by the way, the Disk Permissions are all OK)

Because the new software is insane. If there is a leading space on a line the line gets deleted. There's more insanity as well, but I would guess that's the problem with your post.
Anyway, your problem is that there is minor damage to your startup disk, which can probably be repaired. However, you can't repair the disk while booted from the disk. Boot from your install disk, then go to the menu and find Disk Utility there and use it to run the repair function, then reboot. If Disk Utility still can't repair the damage you need to buy a copy of Disk Warrior and use it.

Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it. See below for how to clone a drive.
     1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
         with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
         After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
         a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
     2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
         button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
         After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
         size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
         partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
         and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
         (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
     3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
         with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
     4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
         Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
         username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
         Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
         install of OS X. You can now begin the update process by opening Software
         Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
You may be able to backup your data if you have an erased external drive you can use. Before you do the above but after you have opened Disk Utility you can try to clone your drive:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
       it to the Destination entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
      the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Now this will only work if the drive is accessible and can be cloned by Disk Utility. Otherwise, you would need to access your drive from another Mac that you can connect via Firewire - Target Disk Mode.

Disk Utility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing a volume is a serious directory error which Disk Utility cannot repair.
•I suggest you read through the article.
•Then, if you do not have an up-to-date backup, it will be a good idea to try to save as much as you can of your data.
•The article suggests using a third party utility. Disk Warrior and Tech Tool Pro are the best utilities for this job. You will need to get one of them and run it, by booting from the CD, or installing it on an external firewire drive or on a second Mac which you can then run in Firewire Target Disk Mode.

When I try to load off the Install CD to do the repair, I get an error saying something about "Kernal" and a grey box saying I need to restart.
I ran TechTool Deluxe and it did not find any problems.
What do I need to do to resolve this? I am not exactly sure what is wrong as I am not THAT technically inclined.
Any directions/help is greatly appreciated.

Repairing internal hard drive from disk utility

Hey folks,
I need to do a repair of my internal hard drive on my PB. I understand that in order to do this, you need to boot from another disk. I cloned my hard drive using CCC to an external firewire hard drive so I can boot from the external.
So I shut down and rebooted while holding the option key but the external hard drive did not appear as a choice for which to boot. So I booted with the internal and went to the Start Up Disk icon in System Preferences. There, the external appeared so I told it to restart using it.
After restart I went to the Disk Utility to repair the internal but when I did, the "repair" button would not illuminate. I'm pretty sure I'm running off the external because when I use spotlight, it searches the external and not the internal.
Any ideas?

If the "repair" button does is not selectable, maybe you indeed restarted using the same INTERNAL drive by mistake? Also, it could be that your INTERNAL hard drive is beyond repair, as which happened to my PowerMac's a few weeks ago and I--which I just mentioned on another forum--had to buy Data Rescue II to salvage my data because the only solution was to reformat the drive. It was beyond repair.
I don't know if this helps, but which did you select? The disk itself? (first in the hierarchy) or the volume (second in the hierarchy... list). Sometimes that matters. But I couldn't tell you since I can't see your screen and don't know your exact issue unless I saw it or was able to test it out.
The other thing could be, are you selecting the EXTERNAL by mistake on the list of drives on the left? You can't repair the disk/volume that you are booted up from, why you would need your software discs / restore discs to do that. But since you are doing it the "workaround" way, which should work, that is my guess.

Just a suggestion, why not just erase and reformat the damaged drive, and then once that's over, do a "Restore" from Disk Utility, choosing your external as the SOURCE and the internal that's been reformatted, as the DESTINATION.

1 HFS volume needs repair -- can't boot from OS X Tiger "kernel panic"

I just searched the support discussions and did find an answer so hopefully someone can help me. Today I ran Disk Utility on both my G4 powerbook and G5 desktop. Both have Tiger 10.4.8 on them and have been running good. To my surprise both came back with a message saying:
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair.
So I booted off my Tiger start up disk on the laptop first and went to utility and repair disk and all was good. The message came back that the volume was repaired.
When I tried to do the same thing on my G5 desktop my computer went to a gray screen and gave an error of “kernel panic” with a page long message. I shut the computer down and rebooted normally and all was fine. I then went back to disk utility and clicked on Verify Disk again to see what it said and here is what I got:

Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Illegal name_
Illegal name_

So i noticed that under:

came back twice. I have no idea what this means. At this point I tried to boot from DiskWarrior and the computer just sat in a state of limbo for an hour or so. I know DW can take some time but 1 hour was pushing my patients so I shut it down and rebooted normally and all was fine again except I still get the message above. I then methodically backed up all my docs, movies, photos etc to my second hard drive. I tried to boot again from Tiger and got the same “kernel panic” message. Can anyone help me?

Maverick922 Before you erase, you might want to try and run fsck first even though it says you are using HFS+

Another reason is your version of disk utility on the Tiger disk might may not match the newer version of 10.4.8 My Tiger start-up disk utility is 10.5 while the OS X version on my HD is 10.5.6.
The Finder along with other applications do not like you naming a file with a period in front of it. This turns it into a Unix dotfile and it then becomes hidden.Hence, illegal name.This may have been done by accident or with purpose.

Some problems can indeed be fixed this way. But working from Recovery_HD or Disk Warrior DVDs and working in the restricted environment those provide can be difficult. You can literally spend days working on this problem (while your regular work is unavailable) only to discover the old drive is unsalvageable.
There is no way to know up front whether you are facing a major Hardware failure or a minor software glitch, or something in between. Often you are forced to work from the drive you no longer trust. I continue to recommend you do this work from a different, fully functioning Mac OS X booted from a different drive.
If you have had the foresight to (as The hatter often recommends) clone your virgin install onto another drive for use in such situations, you will be able to recover from such problems in record time. If not, my previous recommendations stands:
Buy a new Drive. Or two. Install Mac OS X from scratch on a new drive, and get your Mac running again. Later, you can use the full power of Mac OS X to attempt to rescue your data, if needed. Then Zero the old drive, to see if it can hold data again reliably.
If the old drive eventually provides some needed data, and is salvageable, Merry Christmas.

Erase and Install
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU after formatting completes and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
5. After restart into Snow Leopard download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

I am getting the following message on my second hard drive (This hard drive just has data. OS is on the main HD)

If Disk Utility can't repair it try DiskWarrior. It can repair most drive directory problems.

Can I move old video footage from Disk Utility to an external hard drive, to free up space?

I have a lot of old videos of my students located on Disk Utility.
I need to free up memory, so am wondering if I can move these videos to an external hard drive.
From time to time, I need to access these old videos, either to show to a new choreographer or to pull out a clip for a grant proposal, so I don't want to totally lose access to them.

What's the file extension of the DVD in question located in Disk Utility? That's why I was asking for a screenshot. Is that .cdr? Can you do a File>Save As? If it's .cdr can you try dragging it to the external. Doesn't have to go to Disk Utility. Can just be to a folder there. As you drag it does it show with a + inside a green circle? That will mean it's copying it, but leaving the original in place. If it can be moved successfully, you can then remove the original from Disk Utility.
Or just copy (drag) it to your Desktop, then move it over to a folder on the external.

My Mac has just recently stopped opening most applications. It started out with just Microsoft Office stuff but now won't even open itunes. I've tried using the Disk Utility and when I click on "Verify Disk" it give me this:

No, it wouldn't while you are booted from your Hard Disk—you need to run Disk Utility from your Instal Disk to do this. See Using Disk Utility and fsck to resolve startup issues or perform disk maintenance.

Time capsule remote access message from airport utility "An error occurred while reading the configuration"

WHEN I TRY TO ACCESS Time capsule remotely, I receive a message from airport utility "An error occurred while reading the configuration." It worked before on the same computer with the same setting. I am in a different country now (Afghanistan). Not sure if that can be an issue.

If the TC is at home and in router mode as the main router of the network, get someone at home to give you the current public IP which will be on the summary page of the airport utility.
With the public IP try and access it by typing the IP directly into finder.. go.. connect to server.
AFP://publicip.
If you have setup WAN access it will. Otherwise no.
For BTMM and iCloud access and its various issues.. this thread may give you some ideas.

If the icloud method proves unreliable and you are dependent on access to the TC.. I strongly recommend better and more reliable access methods.. in particular buy a VPN modem or router.. whichever suits your internet type and put the TC in bridge behind it. Direct connect to the TC via the vpn.
You will need either a static public IP which you purchase as an extra from your ISP .. maybe via a business account or setup a dyndns account which are readily available.

What is the manufacturer of the external and how old is it? Does it have its own AC power supply or is it USB bus powered?
