Message on 10.9.1 can't login / activate - Can on other computers.

Hi all,
I'm having an issue with Messages.app, and Facetime.app (Although I don't use the latter).
Messages either completely fails to login, or appears to login but remains inactive.
This is on my early 2011 MBP on 10.9.1.
I've done some trouble shooting that rules a lot of stuff out.
I have one appleid linked to my phone number.
Messages works from the phone.
I can use my appleid + Messages from my Father's computer. (Mac Mini,08)
My Father's Messages.app credentials won't sign in on my computer.
I've created a new user account from which to test but cannot properly sign in there either.
The above proves that the fault is not with the account, but with my OS install or my hardware.
I have no reason to believe there is a fault with either, all the same.
I've trawled these forums and followed the general advice. Removing pref files, checked hosts file, changed password, added/removed email addresses, date/time, region, keychain entires, sign out/in on all devices, etc.
I have had no replacement parts and my original serial number is listed where it should be.
I could do a fresh ML/Mavericks install on a spare hard drive for testing, but as a last resort.
Sometimes I get "Messages can't be set up at this time" with an error/reference code.
Sometimes I get a complaint about network settings.
Sometimes I just get a spinning icon and an infinite wait.
I should point out that my mac is in tip-top form other than this, and I never have any network issues.
Once in a while, usually after restart, I make it to the window where you select your phone numbers/email addresses.
When I try to progress past that I'm shown my messages window with the status - inactive.
Attempting to activate asks me to login again and fails as before.
If it's relevant, I did have to go round in similar circles for about an hour in order to get icloud keychain to work.
I ended up sending a half dozen code requests during this process.
Is it possible that apple are blocking logins associated with my serial number as a result of this activity?
All other cloud related services, including keychain, are enabled and seem to be working just fine.
Any help at all would be much appreciated.

Hi there,
First can I say that there are several threads with detailed information on solving this problem.
Just because my issue was at Apple's end doesn't necessarily mean yours is.
I would encourage you to read the relevant threads and do the usual trouble shooting first.
To answer your question, however, I engaged in the text chat service with apple by following the contact options on their website and choosing the 'exception' option.
After basic trouble shooting through text chat, I was told to phone the customer care line for my country, but given a 'free pass', rather than paying the £35.
After that I did have to jump through the trouble-shooting hoops. New user account, reinstall OSX etc etc, but soon after someone was able to remove some kind of security restriction from my account.
When I first installed Mavericks I had immediate difficulties activiting iCloud keychain.
As a result I must have requested ten or fifteen validation codes during one day.
I would speculate that this aroused suspicion and caused apple to limit activity of my appleid.
Hope this is useful to you.

  • Can see but not connect to other computers on my home network

New laptop running 8.1 replaces crashed one (also ran 8.1). After setup, can see the other computer on Home Network (uses Windows 7). That one can also "see" the new laptop. ( Both computers appear in the network folder). Neither
will connect to the other. Get "cannot access message, check name etc."
Both computers are in same Homegroup, tried all the tests mentioned in support . . .everything seems set properly. Ran through all the network and homegroup diagnostics fine. Tried connecting with both firewalls disabled.
Is there a solution I'm not aware of? Others seem to have similar if not identical problem.

    Hi wrkeen,
Please share more details about this issue:
    1. Provide the error messages for better analyzation.
    2. What solution have you done to test the homegroup?
If we enable the network discovery, we will be able to find other computers or devices on the network.
Please take the following steps for troubleshooting:
    1. Run the network troubleshooter to exclude the network issues. For more information, please refer to the following article.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/using-the-network-troubleshooter-in-windows-7
    2. Go through this path Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings and check if we correctly configure file sharing and other settings.
Please take a look at the following article about troubleshooting file sharing.

  • Can software updates be shared on other computers?

I thought I read somewhere that Software Updates could be downloaded on one computer and then shared on another. We have 3 Macs in the house and the software updates are chewing through my allocated data, at least it is a part of the problem I believe.
Is there a link to the instructions to get ALL software updates on one and then just share them on the other two computers, this would greatly reduce the amount of data being used.
If so, could someone let me know the link and also how to disable the auto update on all but one computer so that we don't have this problem?
If someone knows, I would greatly appreciate their help. Thanks.

I am just not sure how to stop the computers automatically updating
    On the opening screen of:
System Preferences > Software Update > Scheduled Check pane
uncheck "Check for Updates" | Weekly
now you can check for and install updates manually on your own schedule.
how to choose the "Download Only" mode
On the Update menu, the "Download only" menu item will be present, but will be grayed out until updates are actually available. Selecting "Download only" will download (but not install) the updates with checkmarks from the list. In 10.4 and earlier, these are left in the "Packages" folder inside the Library folder. In 10.5 and later, they are left in the "Downloads" folder.
\[To actually install once downloaded, you may either open all the packages in the Finder (which launches Installer) or choose "Install now" from the same menu.]
Once they have been downloaded, you are free to copy them around to your other computers. You can use Zip disks if you prefer.
If you have all these computers connected to the Internet through a Router, you already have all the cabling in place for File Sharing. The software for File Sharing is already in place in all your Macs. All you need to do is enable Personal File Sharing in:
    System Preferences > Sharing
    and use the Finder's:
    Go > Connect to Server
Log in with a username and password that is valid on the computer that is holding the files to be shared. If your access is too limited, you can either move the files to be shared to the Public folder, or log in with an administrator's username and password for broader access.
As Niel has pointed out, if you have a Mac OS X Server on your network, a much more elegant mechanism is available. The Server automatically checks and downloads, and stores the packages in a tamper-proof form on the Server. Each Mac then asks the local Server for any updates, and they are supplied automatically without a new Internet download.

  • Can't find remote speakers. Other computers can.

    1. The find remote speakers IS checked in my iTunes.
    2. I am accessing the Internet through the Air Port Express, so I know I am connecting to the AP.
    3. I can connect to it wired or wirelessly, but I do not have a choose speakers option on iTunes either way.
    4. All of the other computers (Mac and XP) in the office are connecting (as I type).
    5. I could connect to the speakers yesterday.
    Any Ideas??
I set up the Airport Express as an AP, there is a wired router in the network. Users can connect wired or wirelessly to the Airport's shared speakers. There are currently 3-5 users trying to connect to the speakers. I am the only one who cannot.

  • Two users can't login to Bonjour, but other users can

All the Macs in my house are set to log into iChat on startup, which creates a defacto messaging network around the house. Quite handy. But now, on one particular machine (a G5 iMac iSight) two users can't seem to log into Bonjour, although on the same machine all the other users can.
I've looked at some other posts on this site, and have checked that Address Book shows 'me' as correct for both users. The Firewall is not set to Essential Services Only, and there is no limit on the bandwidth. The Quicktime streaming setting is set to 1.5 mbps.
In iChat, when using one of the two troublesome logins on the G5, when I click cmd-2 to bring up the Bonjour list, it says Bonjour is not enabled, and gives a click button to enable it. But clicking it does nothing - no effect whatsoever.
When those two same users use the external Buddy List (and an AIM screen name) their iChat works fine.

    Hi Nick,
This is what I have found out.
It relates more to Shares shown in the Finder but may offer clues.
I have G4 Tower that has been upgraded from Jaguar actually, to Panther, Tiger and Finally Leopard.
Along the way I bought a MacBook Pro. (Now on Snow Leopard)
At this Point I changed the G4's Computer name to represent it was the G4 and called the MacBook Pro "MacBook Pro" rather than my first Admin Account name (otherwise both Computer names and Short names would have been the same)
I also changed the Leopard's My Card in the Address Book to give it a different Name in iChat.
Somewhere during this process the G4 ended up with a Ralph-G4.local ID, a computer's name of Ralph Johns's Computer, a Address Book ID of Ralph G4 and the short name of ralphjohns
The MacBook Pro has MacBook Pro as the Computer name and .local name and the short name is alsoralphjohns. The Address Book My Card is my full name.
Now in discussion with a Level 4 poster who knows more about this than I do I found out that in Leopard if File Sharing is Off the Bonjour ID is still supposed to show in the Snow Leopard Shares.
However if it is ON whether you use AFP or SMB or Both it is only supposed to appear once and mine was appearing twice.
Changing the Computer name to something else seemed to confuse things (I could not Log on to share from Either Computer)
Changing the name back resolved that but changed the .local ID on the G4 as well.
(Changing the .local name back to what it was before seems to have had now effect now.)
However the G4 now only shows once in the MacBook Pro Shares.
I do not think the Upgrades are the distinguishing feature more my poor attempts at making sure the new (then) MacBook Pro had a different ID than the G4.
I have been able to Bonjour Video and send files as well as see the Other Computer in the Bonjour Buddy lists.
    So in summary.
The Address Book My Cards have to be Different.
Sometimes changing the Computer name or the .local name does seem to cause issues in File Sharing - which may have some influence on Bonjour as a whole.
Whilst my G4 was showing up in the MacBook Pro as two Shares it was listing the .local name and the Computer's Name as shown in Sharing which were different.
It maybe this if it is happening for this computer that may give clues.

  • Can't find airport but all other computers do?

This is very similiar to a previous posting but no one has answered or given a solution.
Louis Jan, "I cannot access the Internet & the base station is working!", 07:31pm Aug 6, 2005 CDT
I have a wireless airport network in my home and I have three Mac's. One is a G4 PowerMac connected directly to the basestation and it works great. A G4 Laptop and is connected wireless and works great all the time. I have a iMac G4 that uses an airport card and it "use" to work all the time and now won't connect to the airport network.
I have reset just about everything and it is set up exactly like my laptop. I can sometimes restart it and get it will work for about 5-10 minutes and then it loses connection or it won't connect right from the start. I have also noticed that when this happens the system starts getting "clunky" and if I move my mouse down to the doc, the icons move slow or kind of clunky as well as opening folders.
The signal is great all the time and it shows everything should be in order but when I open Safari or any browser, I get a "server can not be found" message.
Help. I have reinstalled the system software, permissions, etc. Nothing seems to work.

Your problems are not at all similar to the discussion you quoted. In that discussion, the problem was with the Base Station (despite the choice of discussion title). On the other hand, you have a Base Station that not only works but also has a known working wireless interface, since another Mac can connect to it wirelessly without difficulty.
First thing to try - open up the problematic iMac and (a) pull out and reseat the Airport card as well as (b) pull out and reseat (FULLY) the Airport antenna cable connection to the card.
If this fails to solve the problem, my suspicion would be that you have a marginally defective Airport card inside this iMac. The only way to test it is to substitute it with a known working Airport card.

  • Can no longer connect wirelessly with other computers

I have an iMac and a Macbook Air.  For some reason I can no longer connect wirelessly between the two. They don't show up in Finder.  Therefore I can't use "Remote Disk" on my Macbook Air to install programs.
Recently I switched from using an Airport router to a Cisco router. Could this be the problem? I can still connect to the internet through my wireless network, but can't find my computers.

    Hello,
All the information you need is printed on the back of the Hub. There are two passwords, one for the Wireless setting (WPA password) and one for access to the hub (Admin password).
    (Taken from http://www.jarviser.co.uk/jarviser/images3/newhubpswd.jpg  ).
If you have forgotten what you changed the admin password to, then I'm afraid you're lost and you should factory reset your Hub:

  • Can connect to my house network, but can't connect to the Internet (other computers can)

    Hello,
I'm experiencing a strange problem. Since I started my Mac Pro (cold start) some hours ago, I've lost the hability to connect to the Internet (Safari and Mail say I'm not connected). However, I can connect to 192.168.2.1 (my router) and see its webpage (it says it's connected to the Internet). If I use another computer on the same network, it can also connect to the Internet.
Weirder, if I go back to my Mac Pro with "no internet" and launch Parallels Desktop, then I can use WinXP to browse the Internet; I'm writing this post on my WinXP virtual machine.
This leads me to think there's a problem with how my Mac OS handles the networking. I have checked the Console, but the only related string I found is this:
    16.04.13 22:03:25
    kernel
    SIOCPROTOATTACH_IN6: en2 error=17
As expected, Google doesn't reveal anything about that (and I'm connected with the first ethernet port). I've tried to restart my Mac, but the problem persists (exact same symptoms).
Could it be a DNS cache issue?
I don't see, other than a DNS problem, why I can't connect to the Internet with my Mac OS while I can on my virtual machines. If it was a driver problem, I wouldn't be able to connect to my router. If it's a DNS issue, where are the DNS caches located in order to clear them (I'd trash the folder)?
I could also reinstall the OS (waste of time, btw), but I'd really like to understand the problem, not just clear it and forget about it.
Or better than guesses, anyone already experienced this?
    Any help welcome.

If it's a DNS issue, where are the DNS caches located in order to clear them (I'd trash the folder)
No DNS caches, it looks up the alphabetic and then uses the numberic from then on.
    http://17.149.160.49
is Apple, Inc main US web site. It that works, and the alphabetic does not, you have a DNS probelm.

  • Can I copy Logic Pro onto other computers in my classroom?

I'm a music teacher at a secondary school and am currently seeing if it is possible for us to buy some macs and Logic Pro for our music tech course. If I b uy one copy of Logic Pro, can I install it on each mac? Or will I have to buy it a number of times?

This is a user only forum, the question should be addressed directly to Apple.
That said, I'm pretty sure you will need to purchase a "Volume License", at least that was the procedure a few years back.
