Message pops up to force a power down - incipient death?

Well I never saw this dialog come up before.
I'm using my old PBG4 while my MBP is in the shop for a minor repair that I'm beginning to wish I never asked for. (But my AppleCare on my MBP was about to expire, so I figured I might as well finish up with everything in good shape.)
Anyway, my PBG4 was working basically ok, considering the specs. But just before a dialog, in multiple languages, popped up saying I needed to force a restart and to please hold down my power button. Everything was frozen at that point, including the cursor.
Disk utility reports no problems with the HD.
Anybody else ever see that happen?
Is my PBG4 nearing its end?
doug

It turned out the internal drive in the PBG4 was, in fact, dying. It went down three times and then sank forever beneath the surface. It rattled, made horrible sounds then went silent. It's not showing up in Disk Utility at all.
I did install a new system on an old 120 GB disk I found around the house. Even though I could install while mounted via firewire, afterwards I couldn't mount the system disk via firewire for some reason, though I could via the slow USB 1 interface.
I would like to return to that firewire mounting issue at some point, but while installing the system the doorbell rang and my 2006 MBP arrived back from Apple - just 48 hours after it was picked up. Not bad! (I had spent more time arguing with Apple about whether it needed a fix or not than it took for them to fix it).
Apple also found an error in the main logic board and replaced that, which was nice to have done before my AppleCare warranty expires this month.
Just in the last few months before my AppleCare warranty expired I had a troublesome trackpad and dead internal HD replaced. And now I've had a new keyboard installed and the main logic board replaced. It feels like a new, speedy computer now - and looks brand new too. I think the AppleCare warranty is definitely worth it. Things always seem to go wrong on Apple portable products I buy.

  • Grey message popping up telling me to shut down immediately?

    Hi All,
This message has only started popping up in the last month. Basically this grey and white message tells me that I need to shut down immediately by holding the power button (in many languages too!). Everything else is disabled and the only thing I can do is "shut down". This isn't a major problem, but want to know if there is something somewhere else that is contributing to this and is it something I should be concerned about??
    Many thanks in advance.

Repeat. Just got a 'Mozilla' security alert on the PC, and something started a system scan.. IS THIS A TROJAN ATTACK ? I forced a power down and did system restore before coming here. I will run Ccleaner when I leave this site.
I have NEVER seen any Mozilla alert or mention of any system scan from Firefox. I have seen Trojan Hijacks, and deal with friends PC's for them, this looked similar.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

First thing to do is a SMC Reset, you can find instructions at:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!!!!
Then try Repairing Disk Permissions, do this at least 2x. You will find this in Disk Utility which is located in Applications - Utilities - Disk Utility.
Finally you may need to uninstall Garage Band and reinstall. You may have to use Pacifist to do this, you can find it at:

  • Hi, I was trying to copy and paste a lot of  info for one day on my calendar to another day and an error message popped up saying that the system responded with an error. Msg won't go away I force quit ical

Need help for trying to unfreeze a message on my ical.  I was trying to copy and paste some appointment info from one day to another on my ical and a message popped up saying the system responded with an error.  All of my info was below the message.  I can't get that message to go away or work on the ical now at all.  I try to force quit ical and have shut down the computer and it still comes up.  Any suggestions?

    K,
Try removing the com.apple.iCal.plist file from your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. To find that Library folder, if you are using Lion, use Finder>Go Menu>Depress the "Option" key>Library. Drag the .plist file to your desktop, and log out/in or restart.
Next, make sure that you are not connected to the internet. Then to to your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Calendars Folder and remove any files with "Cache" as a part of the file name. Use the same method as listed above to get to the correct Library Folder. Log out/in, or restart and check iCal for functionality.

Hmm. The problem still may be the RAM - Apple buys the RAM it puts in its machines from third-party vendors (usually Hynix) so it could be a RAM problem.
There are a couple of things that you can do yourself before taking your machine into an Apple Store or an AASP... download and run an application named Rember that will run a RAM test for you - let it run for a couple of hours or even overnight. If it turns out that your RAM is faulty, Rember will let you know. If it is faulty, then you have a couple of options - replace the RAM yourself or (particularly if you're under warranty still) take the machine to an Apple Store or AASP and have them replace the RAM.
If Rember finds no fault with the RAM, then you'll need to take it into an Apple Store/AASP and get a free diagnosis on the machine. Three beeps do usually indicate faulty RAM, but if it tests good with Rember you likely have another problem - it could be something as simple as the RAM, somehow, not seated correctly or signs of another hardware problem.
Run Rember first... call back with results.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • IPad with retina is stuck on error message that iPad is unable to back up.  When hit ok, the message does not go away.  Cannot power down.  Don't have computer to sync with iTunes.  Now what?

My coworker has a fairly new iPad with retina display.  She has an error message that the iPad has not been backed up and needs to back up when locked, on wifi, and connected to a power supply.  It has an ok button to acknowledge the message.  Every time she hits the ok button, the error message remains.  She is unable to power down because the error message stays at the top and disables the ability to use any other touch portions of the screen.  She tried using Siri to reboot, but Siri was of no help.  She just kept saying that she does not wear boots.  Holding the power button down for an extended period also did not help.  She does not have access to the computer that has her iTunes on it, so she cannot sync it via cable.  She also does not want to do a reset because she has several photos that she does not want to lose.  What can she do?

Try holding the Home and Power keys at the same time for approx 10 seconds or until the Apple logo appears, this will 'reset' the device - it won't lose any data doing this, let us know how you get on.
    Regards,
    Steve

  • Many Tabs & Windows Lost during Freeze & Force Power Down

Sorry for the long post, you can stop reading at whatever point my question seems clear
Where is the data located of previous tabs and windows from a previous Safari session - during a New Safari session  - but PRIOR to slecting "Reopen All Windows from Last Session" ?
This question may be a bit confusing so I will provide the scenario that prompted this question, a few additional details, and lastly an illustration showing what I'm talking about that you can duplicate if you so choose.  :-)
I do a lot of research and use many windows and tabs on a regular basis - approximately 80.
I realize now that I should use bookmarks, but starting Safari and just clicking one click -"Reopen All Windows from Last Session"- has been faster for me than daily organizing and updating bookmarks - (lesson learned).
Yesterday in Safari I had these 80 tabs opened in several windows.  Later I quit Safari.
Today I started Safari, opened a couple new tabs, then a few minutes later my 2011 MacBook Pro froze and became unresponsive.  I had to force power down.
Note: Safari was not "quit" in the traditional sense.
Note: I did not select "Reopen All Windows from Last Session" before my computer froze.
The LastSession.plist file will contain the links for the previous session After you select "quit" in Safari.  When you start a new Safari session, then open a few new tabs, but do not select "Reopen All Windows from Last Session" the LastSession.plist will only have the newly opened tabs.  Then when you "Reopen All Windows from Last Session" the old previous tabs are opened - so where does the computer get this data from?
It's not possible for me to realistically find the tabs in my history as this work has been done over months and they would be buried in many thousand other links in my history file.
I have not rebooted my computer since the force power down and have it currently in target disk mode connected to my iMac.
If you can help with this you really will be a Master - because both the genius bar person and the engineer on the phone at apple didn't know.
Just in case my description hasn't been clear, I'll now provide an illustration you can do yourself to see what I'm talking about:
Open Safari - Go to apple.com and open about 10 tabs all from apple.com domain.... Then Quit.
Open the ~/library/safari/LastSession.plist file in TextEdit and you will see those links.
Now open Safari.  Go to any website - like tvguide.com ... open about 10 tabs all from that domain.  Do NOT quit Safari.
Open the ~/library/safari/LastSession.plist file in TextEdit and you will see those links from tvguide.com and NONE of the tabs from apple.com.
Now select "Reopen All Windows from Last Session" in the History menu of Safari and all your tabs from apple.com will show up.
Only now, After having clicked "Reopen All Windows from Last Session" will the  LastSession.plist file show the apple.com/...  tabs.
So the question is - where is that data saved (all those apple.com/... tabs) which Safari gets it from, before selecting "Reopen All Windows from Last Session" ??
By determining this hopefully I will save the months of research work I had in those tabs.
    Thank you.
Safari Version 5.1.1  OS Version 10.6.8

    Hi Linc,
I use Time Machine on my desktop Macs, both at home and the office but unfortunately Time Machine was not active on this laptop.  Yes, If I had it I would simply revert to the old LastSession.plist file created in the last quit of Safari prior to the crash.  But I don't have TM on this laptop, the LastSession.plist has thus been overwritten with the couple new tabs in the active session of Safari before it crashed, and thus the reason for my original post and question.
My hope is that someone will know where the data is grabed from (descriped in my original post) so I can save the months of research work done.
    Thank you.

  • Hi, I have purchased I-Tunes match which gets to stage 3 but then I get a message pop up advising me that I-Tunes has stopped working and then I-Tunes just closes down! Has anyone else experience this or know a solution?

Hi, I have purchased I-Tunes match but since doing so, I get to stage three of the transfer of library to I-Cloud which is downloading artwork, extra information etc and as soon as stage 1 and 2 turn into green ticks, a message pops up to advise that I-Tunes has stopped working and closes I-Tunes down! I have managed to get the bulk of my library across to I-Cloud so I can listen to music through my apple TV - However now every time I bring up I-Tunes, the I-Tunes Match recognises that there is still some artwork/songs that need to be transferred and again once gets to this same stage of the transfer process, I-Tunes closes down. Has anyone else experienced this or have any advice on as solution? I have a Sony  NS-Series laptop with Windows Vista. Following the closure of I-Tunes, I then get another pop up message advising me that perhaps my current I-Tunes is not the most up to date version and recommends that I download the current version - however my I-Tunes version is currently up to date.

Frustration understood.  May well be worthwhile simply:
    1.  Sign-out of iTunes Store
    2.  Shutdown computer
    3.  Start computer
    4.  Download and install latest version of iTunes
    5.  Launch iTunes, sign-in to iTunes Store, start iTunes Match & allow process to work to completion
By switching on iCloud Status, iCloud Download and Kind fields you can watch progress for any issues.

  • HT201412 My iPhone 5 keeps going black and then pops up the power down screen.  What is wrong?

My iPhone keeps going to a black screen while I'm using it and then the power down screen pops up.  I updated the phone last night, but still having the same issue.   What can be the problem and how do I fix it?

Try doing a reset on your iPhone,
Reset your iPhone by pressing the 'Sleep' and 'Home' button at the same time for about 15 seconds or so. Your iPhone will then go through a reset / reboot procedure and will be ready for use within about a minute.
Don't worry about doing this as you will not lose data or settings.
Good luck and do report back.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
    Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)
