Message telling me to hold down power button till it shuts down?
It's been happening while playing on facebook games, I've only had my Mac book pro 10.7 for less than 24 hours so I haven't done much of anything but get on facebook.
Sounds like a Kernel panic. See this Apple Support note. Facebook games rely heavily on Flash, which does not play well with computers. I'm not saying it caused your Kernel panic, but I wouldn't rule it out. If you continue to have Kernel panics, then come back here, and there's a list of things you need to do.

purchased Lion, installed it - once I log in - i get the curtain and message to hold the power button till it shuts down. Worked with the disk repair utility - fixed permissions to hold the power button till it shuts down. Worked with the disk repair utility - fixed permissions - still can't get past the "black curtain of death" any suggestions?
My machine was patched to date 10.x.x. I was lucky to get an internet connection and I selected the option to re-download Lion... its curruently being downloaded. What if that doesn't work?
Any thougths would be appreciated.
JoeAnd you have a workstation? not a notebook.
Usually a driver or hardware, nothing that Disk utility will fix.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless. -
While transferring files from one external hard drive to another, my MacBook Pro routinely would freeze and often render a message to hold down the start button until it shut down and then restart. I have i7 why does it keep locking up?
You can go back to original hardware; run Apple Hardware Test even.
Remove 3rd party RAM ( much rarer I think )
USB printers, cables, devices and drivers.
What changed?
Also, this is not MBP forum.

Monitor "Power Button Lockout" and shuts down all the time!
I have a HP 2009m 20" diagonial HD Ready LCD Monitor
I am using Windows Vista 64-bit
"Power Button Lockout" message
A few days ago, completely randomly, my monitor started flashing this message "Power Button Lockout". Now the message is projected on the screen all day every day, when I'm trying to use the computer, the monitor will shut off, the power button is practically useless, and none of the other function (menu, volume, or source) buttons work on the monitor. Please help!Try to reset monitor to factory configuration.
Unplug monitor from power and hold the power button for 60 sec.
Then plug the monitor back in and power it up.
Else - it sounds like the button or the switch under the button is damaged. Maybe you can repair/replace it with another mirco-switch?

When I put my macbook pro to sleep and I come back a few hours later and turn my external monitor on I notice that the macbook is ON, BUT frozen! The time is usually a few hours back, so the macbook must have started up and frozen shortly after I had put it to sleep. There is no way to restart but to hold down the power button, SUPER annoying!
Hope this will get addressed in an update. Any way your problem is connected to sleep mode? -
I keep getting an error message that my cmputer needs to be shut down. A dark screen comes down and it says to restart. I have to hold the ON button until the computer shuts down. Then I can restart and it says it is sending a report to Apple. This seens to be happening a lot lately. Has anyone else had this problem?
Hi Carol...
error message that my computer needs to be shut down. It is like a dark screen comes down

Thanks,I had already written a book and I did not want to bombard people with more information, but in my previous research I did come across the major issues with the NVIDIA card. I also was well aware that Apple offered a replacement program that ended in December of 2012. I was going to add that in my original post, but I discounted that theory because I put my faith in the so called "Apple Genius" when I made my second trip to the Apple Store. I brought the NVIDIA card issue to his attention and asked him if he thought that may be the problem, but he said no. He said if it was the NVIDIA card that the screen would be completely black and there would be no startup chime. When I experienced the screen issues I thought it was a problem with the NVIDIA card or the logic board. I asked myself, how can a flawed hard drive cause the screen to act funny.
nbar and Rick Warren, I thank you both for your help and insight; people like you are the real "Apple Geniuses." I was hoping there was a way I could wipe the hard drive before I dumped the computer or attempted to sell it. I guess I will look into purchasing a new machine when I have the funds. Again...thank you both! -
Why does my iMac (on occasion) not shut down, warning message comes on saying i have to switch off by pressing and holding the power button then restart, something to do with a Panic report?
Thanks
BrianHi mende1,
you asked me to post the Kernal panic report then next time it appears, sorry for the delay but it was fine until yesterday when it happened again so here it is, hope you can make sense of this, thank you for your help.
Regards
Brian

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Ifou don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway. -
everything freezes i can't even force quit i have to shut off by holding the power button down please help me with this. thanks
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
I have a mac book pro running Lion 10.7.4 and every time I use Google Earth The computer crashes by lowering a black curtain and then asking me to hold the power button down until it closes and press the power button again to restart it. Can I fix this? It bugs me when I'm looking at real estate.
I really don't have an answer for that one. I guess that while trying to get things working correctly, I would use the most basic monitor I had which in your case would be the Eizon using the Thunderbolt port and adaptor.
When you boot into Safe Mode the startup is quite slow, but you should get the Apple logo and then the spinning gear below it (release the SHIFT key when it appears.) Then after a little more time you should see a gray progress bar appear below the spinning gear. When that disappears the computer will startup to a login screen. -
Hello I shut my iMac down to move it to the next room when I plug it back into the wall, hit the power button nothing happens. I tried holding the power button nothing when't back to the first room plug it in where it was 2 mins ago nothing?
Do you know which iMac model family you have? There are four families dating back to 1998. Troubleshooting depends on that. This forum covers the first three families made from 1998 to 2005. iMacs newer than that get a separate forum.
Do you have the system disks that came with the computer? If so, and depending on model, you may be able to start from the CD/DVD and then make the jump to booting normally.
All computers has a little battery on the logic board that holds date, time, and some important startup parameters when the compuer is taken off wall power for a short time. If your battery was very old and died, then the settings the computer needs to start may have been lost when you unplugged it. For some Mac modles, booting from a CD or DVD gets around this temporarily, but ultimately the battery needs to be replaced. The internal batteries are cheap but can be hard to access on some iMacs like the G4 "desklamp" model -
Macbook pro wont shut down without holding the power button nor cycle for updates to restart.
macbook pro wont shut down without holding the power button nor cycle for updates to restart
Sorry I said sorta wrong. I can shut down and I can update to the point of restart but it just sat for 45 minutes after an update. It goes through the update and to restart then the bars chase each other in a circle and it never restarts. So I hit the power button and go through normal reboot but loosing the update in the process. It does not matter how long I wait for a natural reboot after an update or click to restart it will chase the little bar in circles all day literally and never reboot.
