Message "Unable to Check for Updates"
Trying to select software updates under GENERAL. Getting error popup message "Unable to Check for Update. An error occurred while checking for a software update. I can try again or cancel. Cancel brings me back to Settings/General screen.
I'm also having a problem with getting mail.
Have not received any mail in few days.
Check all settings - seem to be fine. I have no problem with iMac.
I went ahead and updated as you indicated. It worked.
Thanks for your help.
Have a great day.

I found a fix for this.
Go to Wifi Settings and then select your Wifi Network. Tap the blue arrow to go into Wifi settings and then select the DNS tab.
Set the DNS to 8.8.8.8 and then go back to the software update page.
This time it shall work.
I tried it on an iPad 1 running iOS 5.0.1 but I am sure this shall help.
Do rate me and reply if it works. -

Unable to Check for Update on OS 5.1
My iPad 2 will not update its software over the air and comes up with the message Unable to Check for Update. I have tried updating via iTunes 10.6 and it just sits there trying to contact the update server. I have also reset the iPad and restored from backup. Exactly the same problem!
Its nothing to do with the network as i get exactly the same problem at work as i do at home. My iPhone 4S updated to 5.1 without any problem. However my iPad just does not want to know.
Please help!Correction. I started the update on my iPhone and my wife's iPad. However, they never finished. Each one returned an error message stating that the "Software Update Failed. An error occurred downloading iOS 5.1." I can't even get my ipad2 to get that far. It returns an error when trying to contact the server.

This device does not have a sim card in it. Could this be the reason or am I missing something when I am trying to update.
Yes. You can't update or restore any GSM iPhone without a valid sim card installed in the phone. The sim card need not be activated, but it must be valid & present. If you want to update, you need to get a sim card. -
When I try to update my software, I'm receiving the error message "Failed to check for updates. The operation couldn't be completed. Operation not permitted."
I'm using Safari 4.0.3. Yes, I know this is an old version of Safari - I can't update it, or any other software on my MacBook. Should I just wait for the Lion OS, or is there any kind of fix a non-technical Mac user like me can attempt without screwing up her laptop?
I've tried clearing my cache and resetting Safari already - doesn't help. I've also tried to update after disabling my (Norton) antivirus software, thinking that might be interfering. None of these help.
I don't know if it's a related problem, but also I can't download .pdf files from the internet, although I used to be able to.You should use the NortonAV uninstaller to uninstall it. Disabling the dreadful thing in the past hasn't always been sufficient for it to cease creating system havoc. The Mac NortonAV version has a long and well-earned reputation for doing truly seriously nasty things to OS X. Shame on Comcast for inflicting NortonAV on its Mac customers. It's not a matter of if NortonAV will mess up OS X but when and how badly. I can't help but wondering if some setting in your Norton AV has decided that NortonAV, rather than you, will be making executive decisions about what you are allowed to install on your computer and is keeping that fact a secret.
After you are done uninstalling Norton use the finder to search for any Norton files that the uninstaller might have missed. Add the option to search for invisible files.
After you have removed all the Norton bits and pieces restart in safe mode by holding down the shift key right after the startup chime. Keep holding down the shift key until you see the Apple logo and spinning gear. Safe mode does some maintenance tasks which means a much longer than normal startup time. Use Disk Utility to repair permission
If your Mac works normally in safe mode restart. If things still aren't fixed you might want to give another shot at reinstalling Snow Leopard from the install DVD and applying the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo before taking your Mac to the Apple Store.
If you feel the need to run AV software on your Mac use ClamXav in manual mode. It's donationware and doesn't seem to cause the litany of weird problems that are associated with other AV software. -
Trying to update my iPhone 4S to iOS 6 and it tells me..."unable to check for update", an error occurred while checking for a software update. What's up with that? Any suggestions/incite would be appreciated.
Go to iTunes.com, then click on Download iTunes on the top right area, then on the next screen make sure it states iTunes 11.1 on the left side and email is not necessary then click on download now in the blue button. Issue should be resolved
