Message view in preview pane

Is there a way to make the text/message larger in preview pane? I tried changing fonts sizes but that does not make the message appear larger in preview. Using Mail 2.1.1

If those messages were composed as Rich Text/HTML instead of Plain Text, then the sender specifies the font size and the recipient’s font settings have no effect on how the message is displayed, which is one of the many reasons Plain Text should be used for e-mail composition — see Why HTML in E-Mail is a Bad Idea.
AFAIK, the only work around (other than telling Mail to display the Plain Text alternative if available) is what Barney suggested at first, i.e. manually enlarge the font every time. You can put a button in the toolbar for that if it isn’t already there, to make it more convenient.

Marking "Read" When Viewing in Preview Pane

Hi,
Just upgraded to Leopard... I'm trying to find a way to set Mail so that when you just scroll through the email message list and are viewing in the Preview Pane it doesn't automatically mark the message as "Read". I don't want it to show "Read" unless I actually OPEN the message... Is there a way to do this?!

I'm disappointed that Mail on the mac has not added options to control Marking as Read When Viewing in the Preview Pane. I'm using Mail 3.6 (latest as of July 2009) on 10.5.7, and this is still not supported. I have just finished switching to a new mac from a PowerBook G4 867 which I purchased in 2002, and I moved Entourage v.X (not even 2004 or 2008) app and mailboxes over to my new macbook pro. Then I used Mail 3.6 to Import Mailboxes from Entourage. I also imported contacts to Address Book and calendar items to iCal, etc. Finally I can leave Entourage behind --> Not necessarily.
Entourage v.X and Windows Outlook have had this feature for at least five years. Why has this feature been skipped in Mail all this time?
Previewing a message is not the same as Reading the message. Situation one: I like to use the up/down arrows to scroll quickly through messages, and consider which are the most important. Oops, now they're all marked Read! Situation two: Occasionally I click on the wrong message. Oops - it's marked Read now.
Simplest solution: Provide an on/off control: Mark Previewed Messages as Read - on or off
Richer solution: Provide timer control: Mark Previewed Messages as Read After 'n' seconds: - <n>
At least give us the Simpler boolean solution.
I found several threads on the same topic marked as Answered/Resolved. The workaround of getting rid of the preview pane is a poor workaround compared to what has been requested though it seems to be all we have so far. Admins should close the dangling threads only after posting a note indicating why.
TruePreview was proposed as a solution in one of the threads, but I have not tried that. If others have tried and are happy with it, please let me know.

Mavericks mail - classic view with preview pane on the right

I'm going to have to start using Mavericks, but the main reason I have resisted is the fact that Widemail doesn't work there. What I want seems simple. The "classic" mail view where I have column headers and a preview pane on the right, rather than underneath (screens are wider than they are tall... duh). It seems that mail in Mavericks can do one or the other, but not both. Is there any setting, addon, or third party client that will let me have both at the same time?

Mail message list and preview pane no longer in sync?

I'm having a strange problem with Mail. When I select certain messages in the message list, a completely different message is shown in the preview pane. It seems to be a problem with specific message, perhaps they all arrived with in a few days of each other. It's predictable in that the same message always has the same heading information in the message list and causes the same message to show in the preview pane, it's just not the right message (the one that corresponds to the selected message header in the list). I'm sure I don't have to tell anyone how difficult that makes it to find anything. It happens with the effected messages regardless what mailbox or smart folder they are in.
I'm thinking I need to tell Mail to recreate some kind of header cache or something but I don't know where/how to do that. Any help would be appreciated.

have you tried to rebuild the offending mailboxes? select a specific mailbox, then go to the mail menu, mailbox>rebuild

Message of Email from a Specific Person is Blank - but I can see the start of the message in the Preview Pane

I'm having an unusual problem with recieving emails from just one person. When she replys to an email, I can see the original message, but not her message. If she sends me a "fresh" email, the message is totally blank. In both cases, I can see the first couple lines of her email in the preview pane so I know the content is in there somehow.
She can receive my emails fine. Other people on the same email thread seem to receive her emails fine. Any ideas on a workaround or fix?

Shame on me...i upgraded today my iPad 3 and 4S to 5.1.1 and like you my Gmail Box configured as Exchange for Push, is completely broken :|
I can't read my calendars, can't update my contact list and also my email are not downloaded.
This is completely ridicuolous because i also tried to remove the account and restore the devices...nothing worked

Mail not displaying any messages. Blank preview panes.

I am not entirely sure when this started, but here is my problem:
I have to constantly quit and re-open Mail. When it is hidden or minimized in the dock and I receive a new mail message (which I am notified by the red badge number on the dock icon) I will not be able to see any of my messages when I bring the window to focus. If I select the Inbox...nothing. If I select individual accounts...nothing. It says I have a new message and there is a new message indicated by a number next to the account name, but the preview pane and message list pane will display absolutely nothing.
The only way to fix it is to quit and then re-open, but it will usually happen right again. That's the odd part...this does not happen all the time.
I currently have 3 mail accounts setup as IMAP exactly the same on my iMac and Macbook running Leopard 10.5.2.
To make it more confusing, this problem occurs on the Macbook about 10% of the time.
Any suggestions?

It was a looooooong process and I would hate to leave out any steps and cause you to lose your saved mail.
Try this first.
Call them. Ask for tech support.
On the prompt, say "leopard"
When they ask for what kind of computer tell them the computer you are working on.
They will ask you for your name, etc. and serial number of your computer.
In my experience, they haven't asked for the date of my purchase of leopard.
Maybe they look up when you registered it; I don't know.
Anyway, tell them the issue & say a friend resolved it thru tech support, but the problem had to be bumped up to a "product specialist."
If they don't help you, post again and tell me.

Dragged the line tween message list and preview pane so far up that i can't get the double arrow to drag it back down; now the window is only 10% for mess. list

I like to keep my window about 60% message pane - above the line - and 40% for the open message. To see an entire message, I resized the panes with the double arrow. No more double arrow and it's 80% open message and 20% list of messages.
Also, since I have you, Can Lightning show an event on the monthly grid Without Adding the time in the box, or at least allow something like 7p or 2:30p, e.g. ? Thank you for what you do!

Try F8 to get control of the message pane.
As far as the Lightning question, are you wanting to shorten the time so that more of the description is displayed?

Upon mail arriving, current message in preview pan is deselected

Since I have upgraded to Snow Leopard I have been experiencing an intermittent weird bug in the Mail.app.
When reading a message in the preview pane, if at that time there is an incoming message, the message I was reading gets deselected in Mail and the Inbox list gets refreshed. It is rather annoying because in some cases it takes 2-3 attempts to finish reading a message as it disappears from the preview due to other messages arriving.
Anyone experienced this?

Actually this not only happens upon new mail arriving. I cannot seem to find the real trigger for it. The sympthom is always that the currently active message gets deselected and the content from the preview pane disappears.

Preview pane: "Download the rest of this message now"

When i click an email, the Preview pane does not show the full meesage of the email. It shows "Download the rest of this message now" butten instead. I have to click this button to download the full message. This issue is not related to Exchange Server
because I setup Outlook in another computer for my profile and this issue does not occur. Other collegues do not encounter this issue either.
How to fix this issue to let it show the full message in the Preview pane? I use Outlook 2007.

In the lower right hand corner of your Outlook there will be a status as to the connection type. Click it and make sure that "Download Full Items" is selected. I had the same issue as you and my connection status read "Connected to Microsoft Exchange (Headers)".
When I clicked it and selected "Download Full Items" the status changed to "Connected to Microsoft Exchange" and my issue cleared up.

Messages in MAIL appear BLANK in preview pane

Hello,
This started happening to me 2 weeks ago.
Mail functions properly and then it starts not displaying messages in the preview pane.
I see the message in the left column (subject, sender).
I see the header (from, to, etc)
But the body is blank.
Double clicking (opening the message) allows me to see the message.
Restarting MAIL makes it ok, but not for long.
I have to perform a full reboot of the system.
This is getting extremely annoying, as I use my Mac for work and can't afford to reboot all the time.
Up to now I've tried :
- Rebooting
- Rebuilding
Then I've looked around the posts on this forum and I've tried a few things that didn't work, such as :
- Deleting all saved contact information
- Resetting my CONTACT database
- Trying to find and "index" file in library/mail/ (couldn't find it, I only have a folder called v2)
So the problem is still there

Hide/Disable preview pane in Mail

Previously one could double-click the border seperating the preview pane from the list of messages to hide the preview pane.
In the Mail application in Mavericks this border is no longer visible. How can I hide the preview pane in Mail on Mavericks?

If you switch to Classic View in Mail Prefs, drag the Horizontal Splitter down to the bottom of the screen then switch back to Modern View, the Preview pane will be gone from both views.

Unable to read text of email in preview pane or if opened. This problem occurred 3 days ago and has affected every email in my inbox received before that date.

the emails appear in my inbox with subject line ok. also shows sender.
This occurred two days ago and has affected all of my in box prior, Emails recd since then can be viewed. The interesting part is when I click on an email that I can read and then click on an email from a few days ago or a month ago , it still shows the subject and sender of the later email and the preview pane is blank.
extensions installed are lookout 1.2.13 and import/export tools 2.8.0.4 which is disabled. was not game to enable
by way of explanation, lets say I have 20 emails in my inbox numbered 1 thru 20.
emails 1-10 recd prior to date X
emails 10-20 recd post date x
emails 10-20 can view in preview pane all as normal
if I click # 15 say all is well
if I then click #2 say, the preview pane is blank , the to and from still appears as # 15 and the preview pane is blank.

right click the folder, select properties and then the repair button. That rebuilds the index for the mail folder and may fix the issue, or it may remove some mail from the list. But remember we are only building an index, not changing the message store.

How to disappear preview pane in Mail 10.9?

I cannot determine how to get the preview pane to disappear in Mail 10.9. Double clicking on the separator bar does nothing. I would like to use the 'classic' display, but I cannot make the pane at the bottom go away - and subsequently every message automatically opens when I scroll past it (whether I'd like to open it or not).
Using the 'new and improved' display version, I cannot make the content pane on the right-hand side disappear either.
I assume this is a bug, not a feature, but what's the real story?

This is Mail behavior since I 'upgraded' from 10.6.8 to 10.9.
The divider between the preview pane and the list cannot be dragged all the way to the right -- the right-hand separator stops about three inches from the right edge of the Mail window.
Likewise, when I switch to 'classic' list view, the preview pane below cannot be completely reduced -- the separator bar stops about 1.5 inches from the bottom of the Mail window.

Leopard Mail Preview Pane

In Tiger, the preview pane for mail was made into columns. First the mailboxes, etc, then the mail, then the preview pane. Now, in Leopard, the preview pane is below the list of emails. I prefer the former. Any idea how to change it back? I've looked in preferences, view, window and can find no answers. Also, no one else has posted anything about this that I could find.
Am I that obtuse or am I the only one who cares?
Please help.

This was never the default view (the preview pane has always been below the messages by default), so you must've had a plugin installed that allowed you to change it. As suggested in another reply, take a look at Letterbox and, if that doesn't work, WideMail.

Mail preview pane will not scroll down long messages.

using mail 3.6
i use the preview pane to view all my messages. when attempting to scroll down a longer message, whether using the arrow keys, arrow buttons, or scroll manually, mail will "pop" the message back to the top. if i double click the message and open it in a separate window, the same thing happens.
even if i stay on a message, and allow all content to load, mail will still pop back to the top of the message.
i looked through a couple of forums, and didnt see this exact dilemma, so please excuse if it is addressed elsewhere.
any ideas?
