Messages and attachments

I'd like to delete messages and their attachments not just from mail window, but from Library also. All attachments and messages , completely. I did this before in mail window and Library and the messages in mail window reappeared but grayed out and blank. When I clicked on message and hit delete nothing happened. When I clicked on it and hit Command X and delete...nothing happened. Whats up?

If you are deleting mail from within the Library > Mail folder in your home directory, you are getting the grayed out messages because the index Mail is keeping of what's in that folder says it should be there, but since you deleted it manually it's obviously not. To remove a message permanently once you've deleted it, you should go to Mailbox > Erase Deleted Messages. To clear those grayed out messages, go to Mailbox > Rebuild. I just hope Mail doesn't get too confused by what you've deleted, else you might actually lose more messages you don't intend to.

  • Mail  - Uintended Saved Messages and Attachments in .imapmbox

+Why do I have thousands of documents (messages and attachments) from past years stored in folders with suffix .imapmbox?+
Time Machine quit backing up because of insufficient space on my external drive. Searching for an answer, I found (and deleted) a few thousand files dating back a couple of years: nearly 150gb of old messages, images, movies, and documents that I did not know were stored. Many were stored multiple times. Most were at the locations:
    Macintosh HD => Users => (Username) => Library => Mail => Mac (Username) => Deleted Messages.imapmbox => Attachments
. . . and similarly with the last folder in the sequence being "Messages." : Sent Messages.imapmbox =>
The situation also occurred with "Sent Messages.imapmbox" having hundreds of Messages and Attachments.
I had no knowledge of these being on my HD because when (in Mail) I clicked on "Sent" and "Trash On My Mac" I saw relatively few files only the ones I expected, given the selections I made in Preferences.
In Mail Preferences for "Sent" I have checked store on server and delete when one month old.
For Trash I have checked moved deleted messages to Trash mailbox and store deleted messages on server. Also, "Permanently delete messages when one week old."
In Preferences - General, I had selected "Remove Unedited Downloads: After message is deleted."
I do want email downloaded to the Mac HD to read offline, why do they get stored embedded out of sight (and previously out of mind) down in those .imapmbox locations?

No, you can't emulate that feature. But you can just compose your message and when you're done, press Return at least 3 times and attach your file there; that will make the attachment be at the end of the message (such as an image), or appear separately as an attachment in the message header when the recipient opens it.

  • How can I disable iMessages from archiving messages and attachments?

I noticed while browsing ~/Library\Messages/ that iMessages has been archiving my messages (Archive folder) and saving attachments (in a separate Attachment folder). Under the settings for iMessages on OS X 10.8.2 Mountain Lion, I don't see any options to disable this. The only thing close to that is already unchecked: Save history when conversations are closed.
Any ideas why iMessages is saving all this information? How do I disable it? My concern is that it's going to keep accumulating data overtime. I don't want to keep having to go back in there and delete those two folders constantly.

    Hi,
This somewhat date back to the way iChat's Saved Chats were once Stored.
At iChat 5 (in Snow Leopard) you could choose to see the last chat - (when opening an new chat with a person you had chatted with before) or parts of the Last Chat in terms of the Last so many IMs.
Example Pic of iChat 5's Prefs
Since then the management choices of the Save Chats has changed in both iChat 6 and Messages.
Messages stores Chats two ways if they are iMessages.
You can elect to Save them in Messages > Preferences > Messages.
It also store the chat.db and other databases items which includes the Attachment items
The chat.db is the bit that fill in the "history" if you iMessage the same person even if you are not saving the Chat in a formal sense in the App's Preferences.
This is irrespective if your delete the Conversation from the Messages main window.
How big these Databases get obviously depends on your iMessages usage.
Striker's link seems to be about a similar issue on an iPhone (I presume it transfers to other iOS devices) but I am not sure that it is relevant in this situation.
    Edit.
I should have been clear that you cannot change the database behaviour.

  • Restoring mail messages and attachments from Library Mail folder

Can someone please tell me the best way to do the following...
I have recently performed an erase and install of Snow Leopard.
I need to restore my old mail and I have the following data...
A copy of the "Mail" folder from the "Library" folder, up-to-date as of yesterday (19/9/09). I omitted to take a copy of the "Mail Downloads" folder which I believe contains the attachments for the messages.
An older copy of the "Mail Downloads" folder, up-to-date as of 31/5/09.
I was advised by one person at Apple Care that the Mail Folder was all I needed to back-up all my mail. Then the next advisor told me I should have taken a copy of the Mail Downloads folder as well. Another advisor suggested I exported all the mailboxes manually one by one which I now wish I had done.
In any case, I am where I am and I would like to know what to do with the data I have to be able to access my past mail messages.

    Robert,
If you were to need to do this again, all you need is to restore the Mail folder and the com.apple.mail.plist file (Home/Library/Preferences). If you restore those -- replacing any that might get created, but would not if you don't first launch Mail -- then Import is not necessary and it picks up where it left off.
The Mail Downloads folder is not needed -- its contents are redundant to what is kept with the messages.

  • Mail 2.1.3 and attachments in the middle of messages

    Hi
We have users with OS 10.4.11 and Mail 2.1.3. Often I get messages from them with attachments mid message, the rest of the message gets converted to ATT00001.html and I have to open that view the rest of the message. Other's with various Mail clients get similar results.
It's usually because they've attached the message when the cursor was mid-message. 10.5 / Mail 3 has the Edit>Attachments>"Always attach Attachments at End of Message" option which gets around this.
My query is can I emulate this option somehow with Mail 2.1.3 ?
    Thanks
    Matt

No, you can't emulate that feature. But you can just compose your message and when you're done, press Return at least 3 times and attach your file there; that will make the attachment be at the end of the message (such as an image), or appear separately as an attachment in the message header when the recipient opens it.

  • I want messages with attachments to not be sorted and I want to see the attachment icon

Thanks for sending me the information on showing the attachment icon. I did what you suggested, and it did not work. And now, if I get an email with an attachment, I don't see the email--it is buried somewhere in my inbox. I used to be able to get messages with attachments and they would come in chronological order, and there would be an attachment icon. Can you please help?

Click on the header label DATE to sort by date. Click DATE a 2nd time to reverse the sort order.
This works on any header. The one to click on is where it is going to sort.
Do you have the attachment column showing? See image.
If not click the circled icon and add it.

  • Mail Signatures, Folder Organization, Notification and Attachments not working the same since upgrade to Mavericks

    Hi All,
Normally very quick to do so, I’ve been hesitant to upgrade to Mavericks based on so many issues being reported with Mail + Gmail.
Previously Apple released a fix for these issues and I still waited a while.  This weekend I upgraded to Mavericks and Mail is definitely not working as I’d expect it.
Some of the things I notice include:
    1) My saved mail folders, previously in alphabetical order, are now in reverse alphabetical order and dragging them to be in a different order has no effect
    2) Previously when I clicked on a message and pressed Message > Remove Attachments the message would reappear in my inbox within a second or two, without the attachment.  Now, the message simply disappears.
    3) The little red icon no longer appears in the dock when a new message arrives
    4) For my various accounts, signatures do not appear/disappear as I select a different From account (each of my accounts has different signatures).
Does anyone have thoughts on any of these items?
    Thanks,

Not an answer, but a repeat ...
I too have problem (2) -- Remove Attachment now makes the email in question disappear (in fact moving it to Archive).
    Help would be appreciated.
(Have just moved from Lion to Mavericks.)

  • How do I move all the messages and folders in `Local Folder' to my main account folder? The stuff in local is from importing from Outlook

I imported my mail from Outlook and they went to Local Folders. I want them in the main folder section for my account. How do I move them there?
At the moment I have to create each folder and then copy the contents from one folder to the other - crazy, and I have dozens of folders

As Chgrist1 said, that is how it works. Having looked as how Outlook stores mail, and everything else. It is a wonder anything ever comes out that is useable. PST files are a mess. First thing they do is pull the email apart and store header, body and attachments is three different places.
You will also find (most likely) that your accounts in Outlook were POP and the default in Thunderbird is IMAP. merging IMAP and POP files and folders is fraught with difficulties and dangers. It would be a brave developer that tried that in an import.
In the case of IMAP all your mail is one the server, so import is not all that important. However copying a gigabyte or two of of outlook mail into your imap server could exhaust your available message storage space there and cause the import to fail completely.
So If you want to do what your saying, first confirm that your not using IMAP mail. Otherwise your experience is most likely going to be exceedingly poor.
If you are using POP mail, then changing the setting in your pop account to cause it to use the global inbox will make a single mail account appear, "Local Folder", with your outlook mail as a sub folder of that.
Dragging a folder from the imported outlook tree to Local folders is not difficult, as long as you remember that folders hang of other folders, so your dragging them to a parent, not a position on the screen you like.

  • Can you copy/paste files from the Finder to Mail in Lion, or drag them onto the Mail icon in the Dock to create a new message and attach the files to it?

Message title says it: Can you copy/paste files from the Finder to Mail in Lion, or drag them onto the Mail icon in the Dock to create a new message and attach the files to it?
I can't find anything in the Knowledge Base that says these two options no longer work or still do.
I do not have a system capable of running Lion, but I need to know the answer nonetheless.

Gee, I don't know: "paste attachments mail Lion"? ;-)
One further question, if I may: in Panther (which is where I've aggregated nearly 7 years of mail), if you copy more than one file in the Finder, switch to Mail, and paste the files into a new message, only the file names paste in. If you copy one file and paste it into a Mail message, you get the file, not just the name. Is that still true, or has that (IMHO) bug been fixed since 10.3.9?

  • Mail message with attachments

I use iMacs for work.  I often send email messages with attachments using Mail.  Often, when sending email messages to Windows users (they are out there still), they will reply that they cannot open "the second attachment."  The message seems to "pick up" a second apparent attachment, which is generally just a few K in size, and is not part of the original message or attachment.  Unfortunately, though, it tricks the recipient into thinking that there are two attachments and the second one is meaningful  So then they respond and I have to assure them that the second attachment is irrelevant and can be ignored.
Any thoughts on how to fix this, so outgoing email messages will only present the intended attachment?

That's a great question.  I do use a signature, but inasmuch as it is simply text pre-inserted in the email message, I would be surprised if the signature somehow became stripped out and converted to an attachment. Nonetheless, I will try deleting the signature to see if that makes any difference.

Where does Messages store attachments on the iPad?

Managing memory usage is not possible because the user does not have access to the file structure (unless you have jail broken your iPad that is).

    Hi Shiva,
see this abstract from messages file:
"The SOAP header of a message contains all the important information that the Integration Server requires to forward the message, while the payload contains the actual business data (such as <PurchaseOrder> in the example above). <b>You can also append an unlimited number of attachments to the message before it is sent. Attachments typically comprise non-XML data, for example, pictures, text documents, or binary data."</b>
