Messages app won't mark texts or imessages as read

The messages app on my iphone 4 (os 6.1.3) won't mark any of my texts as read. I can receive texts and imessages, read them, and if I'm fast enough I can send replies, and I can see that the new message count goes down. However, within 20 seconds of opening the app, all messages that I have received since the problem started are marked as unread again. Additionally, if I am in a message thread when this happens, the new messages from that thread are opened in a new thread. I can only type for about 10 seconds after opening the app, and if I am typing after those 10 seconds, the app will crash and close itself.
This seems to be very similar to the behavior described here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/22226643?ac_cid=tw123456#22226643 although my problem is with both texts and imessages. I did all the things described in that thread:
"I've turned my phone off and on and few times. I reset the app a few times. I even did a hard reset of my phone (holding the home and sleep button at the same time).  I also went into my iMessage settings to turn it off and on again. I changed it to my email address, instead of my phone number. I turned off SMS and back on. I've done a lot of things and the issue still persists."
I also backed up my phone up and restored it completely. This problem is still happening, though I see no problems at all in any other apps.
Any ideas?

I am having the same problem.  iMessages sends and sync with my iphone 4s and ipad, but even though I'm signed in on my mac with iMessage, I can't send any mesages and they don't sync with the messages sent from my iphone.   I am signed in with my AppleID on the mac, and I get the confirmation notices on my iphone and ipad, but I can't send send or receive iMessages on the mac.
I've tried the numerous fixes suggested in other articles, such as signing in and out on all my devices (starting with the iphone first), deleting plist files, uninstalling Flash player, resetting the PRAM, repairing disk permissions, booting in safe mode, but nothing works.
I have a MacBook Pro 17" running the latest version of Mavericks with Messages version 8 (4226).
My iCloud account is a different login than my AppleID I use for the iPhone, iTunes, and Messages, but that's because it's the AppleID that is tied to my cell phone number.
Thank you for the help.

  • Mac Messages app won't send text message when in a group message

When I'm in a group message with an iphone user and an android user it always sends as an iMessage, and the android user never gets the message. Even when it says "Text Message" in the text box it still sends as an imessage. This sometimes happens on my iPhone, but not every time. When I message the android user separately on my mac it sends as a text.  I've never been able to send a text in a group message on my mac though. I have to end up sending messages separately to the android user. The android user used to have an iPhone, but I've checked his phone number on this website https://selfsolve.apple.com/deregister-imessage and it says his phone number isn't registered to iMessage. He's also said he removed his phone number from his iPad. What could be causing this?

    Hi,
If you add a Land Line number to your own Address Card in Contacts  (Card Menu > My Card) and then type your name in to the "To" spot in Messages on the Mac you will see the Land Line also listed as a potential iMessages contact number.
That is to say until it contacts any number the number involved will show a greyed out iMessages listing next to it.
For this Screen Grab I somewhat forced the issue to isolate my Land Line.
In the top bar it is listed as a potential iMessages contact.
As I have pressed enter it has gone a stage further and told me it is not Registered.
Whilst iMessages contacts that have worked are marked with a blue Speech Bubble for iMessages SMS/text ones have a green Indicator that says Text (as opposed to the AIM or Jabber  or Yahoo listed ones)
    A less forced one
    An iPhone is listed first.
The options are then the Land Line and then two email addresses both of which have been used before.
I too have noticed that trying to send an SMS text messages to a Number does not seem selectable on the Mac version (Click and hold and "Send as SMS" is not an option)
Hopefully this can be set up so the app can recognise Non iPhones in some way.
I have yet to find a way to start an SMS conversation from the Mac.

My messages app won't open, after I sent a large iMessage. I think it just has too much data on it. What can I do other then reset my iPhone?

Hi everyone, I had this problem but none of the solutions above worked. What happened with me, and with others in other forums, is that a particular thread or message was causing the problem. I'd go to open the message and all I'd get was a white screen with the blue bar at the top. So, I went into contacts, pressed 'send message' to a contact whose message wasn't causing the problem, then I pressed back to messages. You then swipe to the left on the thread that's causing the problem, and delete it. Sadly this means you will lose all that person's messages, but you can try opening it from there and deleting it on the thread. Didn't work for me though. Hope that helps! It was the only thing that worked for me after about three days of total frustration and resetting!

  • When I try to delete message threads on my iPhone 5, the message app won't work until I restart my phone. Once it restarts, the message threads that I tried to delete are still there. Any advice?

When I try to delete message threads on my iPhone 5, the message app won't work until I restart my phone. Once it restarts, the message threads that I tried to delete are still there. Any advice?

I recently spoke to someone from Apple support, and here's what I gathered:
"Older" phones (read: anything iPhone 4s or older?) sometimes have trouble keeping up with the processing demands of the newest software. When deleting threads with a lot of media (photos, videos, etc), it can take a lot of processing to successfully delete. What this support tech suggested was picking some of the bigger threads at night before you go to bed, deleting them, and then leaving the phone alone-- and plugged in-- overnight to give it enough time to delete everything. He suggested not even pressing the lock button; just leave it to process (though I imagine the screen will lock on its own anyway).
Not sure if it works yet since I just spoke to him, but it's the closest thing I've got to a solution!

  • Messages app won't sync on one computer

    Dear Community,
I'm having problems with the Messages App on one of my 2 Business Computers. I do use a Mac Pro at work as well as one in my home office. Both are similar, running the latest version of Mavericks and do have the Messages App configured the same way.
However while iMessages from my iPhone or iPad do sync correctly with the home office Mac, the other one simply just won't sync anything! Nothing comes in and nothing goes out... altough when I try to send an iMessage from that computer, everything seem ok, but after 5 minutes the message ist listed with a red ! symbol which says "Your message could not be sent, Try again".
    Anyone any idea?
Of course internet and iCloud is working perfectly on both computers.
    Thanks for help!

  • Messages app won't send photos

I'm trying to send a photo to my iPhone via the Messages app on my Macbook Pro but it won't send. It keeps telling me the message failed. How can I fix this?
I have the Macbook Pro from mid 2014 I guess, I got it from school. It's the one with retina display? I updated to the newest OSX and the messages app seems to be the only thing malfunctioning.

    Hi,
    Try zipping the file first.
It does seem there is some sort of issue.
    It is somewhat random though.
Some say it effects AIM conversations, some jabber and some other accounts like the iMessages one.
Some say it effects Messages 8 in Yosemite to other OS version and earlier version of Messages or iChat.
Zipping seems to work for AIM conversations.

  • Messages app won't display any windows

My Messages app (v 7.0.1) intermittently won't display any windows, not even the Preferences. I've tried reloading the app from Time Machine, but it won't let me replace an the current version.
    I'm running a Mac Pro Quad-Core Intel Xeon 3.2 GHz under 10.8.5.
    Any ideas?

    HI,
The Time Machine version needs to be the same version as is used in OS X 10.8.5
This will be version 7.0.1 which came with the OS X 10.8.2 update.
the Process should be to go to Applications and find the Messages app.
Then use the Time Machine icon in the Dock.
This will reduce the window and display the galaxy in the background.
On the right are the arrows and dates for moving "back in time".
The window should also have become "stacked" with those older versions behind.
Changing the date should file through the stacked windows until the process finds a change to the Applications Folder.
If you went back until a change in Messages you probably got the wrong version (or a version that will not work with a later version of the OS).
    Try this:-
In any Finder window use the Go Menu whilst holding down the ALT key.
Select the Library that now appears in the Menu list
    Navigate to Preferences.
    Find com.apple.ichat.plist
Drag it to the Trash and restart the app.
This .plist holds the windowing Info for the app.
I am presuming you have tried the keystrokes seen in the Window Menu of Messages ?
however it also holds all the info about the Preferences except for the accounts.
This means any change you have made from the Defaults will be reset.
The Messages section on Fonts and Colours is the most commonly changed.
All the Alerts will be reset if you changed them.

  • Message app won't open

For some reason every time I open my "Message" application it crashes no matter what. I dont know what to do and I dont want to do a Factory Reset. I already tried rebooting my phone and turning it off then on. I need help. Also at time some of my apps crash out of no where, mostly Facebook and Safari now my Message application won't open at all.

Did you try some other messaging apps?

  • Messages app won't restore / reappear after closing or minimizing.

This is a weird problem and I'm not even sure how to describe it so apologies if this is confusing.
I have a problem with the Messages app on my Mavericks computer. When I first launch the app from the dock, it opens up fine. It will continue to restore just fine for a while, and then it will suddenly stop restoring. By restore, I'm talking about re-opening the app after you've hidden / closed or minimized it using the close or minimize buttons in the top left of the window. The indicator "light" below the app icon in the dock, which indicates that the app is loaded, is illuminated. It won't restore from Launchpad, or through Finder either.
If I right click on the Messages icon in the dock, I can select to create a New Message, and then the app restores just fine. If I simply click on the Messages icon, nothing happens, but the menu bar does change to Messages. From there, I can select menu -> Window -> Messages and the app will restore. If I receive a new message notification and click on that, the Messages app will restore just fine. It's only when I try to restore it by clicking on the dock icon that it fails to restore.
I've tried restarting and a full reboot, but I'm out of ideas after that. Any thoughts on where to even start troubleshooting? I've tried a search for the answer, but the context of the problem makes it impossible to filter through the results. Thanks.

When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • OSX 10.10.3 Messages app won't start - unresponsive

Since my upgrade to OSX 10.10.3 from 10.10.2 on my 1.7 GHz Intel Core i7 8GB MBA the Messages app will no longer open for me. I do receive notifications of Messages, but as soon as I attempt to open the app it becomes unresponsive and pegs the CPU.
I've never used Messages beta on this system, no corporate security junk (i.e. Intel/McAfee), just plain ole 10.10.3 on an MBA.
I've submitted a crash report to Apple on every occurrence. Just wondering if someone has found a simple workaround.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.
