Messages, as a whole, is broken.

IMHO the whole system of ID's and phone numbers and syncing is way too complicated for your average user to understand. If Apple would just implement an IMAP-like system where any iMessage sent to your phone number or you email would sync with all of your devices it would save everyone a lot of time.

I realise that this is a General Comment rather than a Question post.
However.
Apple can get Apple ID iMessages to sync across devices.
If at least one end of the conversation is an Apple ID then the chat/conversation will be synced across devices.
This does presume that the Apple ID in Messages and the one set up on the Phone as the second Received At and the Caller ID are the same.
I find this works with Messages beta and two iPhone 3GSes I happen to have.
My son is reporting no problems with his Mesages and a 4GS and an iPad2.
On the whole we are sending these iMessages when connected to a WiFi network.
I have had a Phone service connection iMessage and it has synced but it can be delayed.
The Phone Number does appear to be different.
This appears to be because you can't get the Number even as just a sync reference in to the Messages beta.
This seems to despite the fact that at one level it does seem that Apple regard the Number as some sort of Apple ID
Greater integration on this front would seem to be what most people are requesting.
It is a feature request.
It does not mean the App is "Broken" as you put it.
I would say Messages beta lives up to about 95% of what Apple said it would do.
About 10-15% of issues seem to be based on interpretation of what Apple said and what the app can do.
Only the 5% that Messages doesn't actually do is based on expectations rather than actual faults.

You probably ran a defective third-party "utility" such as "CleanMyMac" or "MacCleanse" that purports to "clean up" "junk" files. What it really does is to corrupt the operating system and many applications.
The first thing you need to do is remove that software according to the developer's instructions. Never install it, or anything like it, again. Then see below.

Messages Not Saving Whole Conversations

I noticed that Messages was not saving whole conversations (where it asks you to "load earlier messages" at the top). In the settings for Spotlight I had Messages checked off.
Is the Spotlight setting for having access to Messages directly related to whether or not Messages does not cut off conversations?

click and hold on the bubble, you will now see "copy/more" select 'more'

Sometimes one message blocked the whole queue

Now I am developing a MDB in weblogic to consume the TIBCO jms queue and I have deployed the MDB properly. And normally it runs ok.
But sometimes there is one message in the queue that can not be consumed by the MDB .And also this message blocked the following messages to be consumed. We don't know what is the reason.
If we redeploy the MDB, it will continue the process and we have checked that the message that has blocked the queue is correct.

I think this may be an example of a "poison message". This is a message that causes an exception during consumption in the MDB causing a transaction rollback and putting the message back on the queue.
Possible solutions:
1. Some messaging server allow you to move a message out of the queue after a set number of failed deliveries
2. Handle this exception in your code - check the validity of the message first and proceed only if the message is valid, otherwise exit gracefully without doing any work.

Messages multi person video conference broken in ML

For several years four of us have met in a daily 4-way one hour video conference using iChat and then later the Messages beta. While it has not been perfect it has always been a useable conference. Immediately upon installing Mountain Lion we found that the video conference would be unuseable when the third person was added to the conference.
The normal configuration is that the conference host's image is at the bottom center of the conference screen with the other three conference members in larger windows immediately above the host in a horizontal string of three images. After installing ML all four of us experince complete distortion of the images with then being strung in vertical windows that contain one or all of the conference participants in each of two of three vertical windows. Not only are there mutiple occurrances of each participant but the images themselves have distorted aspect ratios.
The problem appears only on the machines that have been upgraded to Mountain Lion. If one of the confree's uses Lion, rather than ML, then that machine never receives distorted images even while others on the conference using ML are receiving distorted images.
The machines that we use do not seem related to the problem rather Mountain Lion appears to be the key. The machines used by the group are:
1- Mid 2012 MacBook AIR, 1 - Mid 2011 MacBook Air, 2- Late 2009 Mac minis, 1- 2008 Aluminum MacBook, 1-2008 Aluminum iMac and 1 late 2007 plastic iMac (Lion only on this machine).
It would be nice if any other 3-4 person Massages video conference users would verify this video problem under Mountain Lion. Please respond back here to see if it is a widespread issue.

sorry but i am totally confused.
i just spent the last 4 hours trying to get multi video chat to work with Messages in 10.8.2 and so far nothing works. How are you doing this?
For one, Facetime seems to be completely void of any multi video functionality.
Now comes the confusing parts, if I enter a friends' gmail acct to start a video chat via Jabber it automatically defaults to iMessage which opens then Facetime. so i then tried to call them using a different gmail acct which wasn't associated with iMessage and... yes we were able to start a video chat.
Now at the bottom of the video window is a little "+" icon which only seems to work if i add people before anyone answers. after the first person answers i am unable to add anyone. is this normal?
furthermore when i try to chat with multiple people via jabber it tells me "This server does not support group chats". what?!
has anyone been able to add multiple jabber buddies to a text chat in Messages?

Is there any way to retrieve accidentally deleted messages? A whole conversation accidentally got deleted!

I accidentally deleted an entire conversation when just trying to delete a couple of messages! Help!!!! Is there any way to get it back without losing the messages Ive recieved and sent since my last backup? Or do I have to restore my iphone from its last back up and lose all the other messages (it was last backed up yesterday

Open the document first as a PDDoc, then convert to an AVDoc. Use an error

Text Messages in Archive Folder are Broken

I have posted this in PC Suite board, but there was no answer, so I post it here, because this also happens in Ovi Suite.

recently I've put some of my messages in Saved Messages Folder. When I want to view these messages from PC Suite/Ovi Suite, these messages are merged with anothers. I will try to explain:
For example:
In phone:
Message 1 from Sender in Saved Messages:
Aaaaaaa. Bbbbbbbb.
Message 2 from Sender in Saved Messages:
Ffffffffffffff. Uuuuuuuuuuu.
And in PC/Ovi Suites they appear as one message:
Message 1 from Sender in Saved Messages:
Aaaaaaa. Uuuuuuuuuuu.

I got a message saying that iPhoto is broken and to delete it & re-install it from the app store

Then, I deleted it like it said and went the app store, and it wanted to charge me the regular $15. Is there any way to get around this?

What version of iPhoto are you using now? This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto are compatible with Mavericks. It also indicates which versions qualify for a free upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 and which require a purchase:
Note 1: every day more users are reporting problems with iPhoto 8.1.2 so I've included it in the non compatible category.
Note 2: If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 application on the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5.1.

Snow Leopard unusable with Broken Pipe messages in the console

Recently, probably after having installed OS X 10.6.8, I noticed that after a while, something within the OS becomes saturated leading to no new processes being able to be started. All existing programs continue to run and all seems normal except if a running program needs to call another program (e.g., Mail needing to fetch a password from Keychain Access).
The console then becomes awash with broken pipe messages and a whole bunch of error logs are created for various programs.
This is causing me great irritation as everytime I am forced to restart the machine (sometimes by forcing a hard-reboot).
I would really appreciate any help on this matter. I would rather not have to completely re-install the OS if I can help it.

That is the magic solution, it gives you a new OS X copy which you immediately update, leaves all your files and programs alone. (unless they have kernel extensions and you need to update those programs)

Don't know what the problem is, it is very robust, but hard drives are based on magnetic bits and those bits fail, the best OS in the world can't stand up if the chair it's standing on is kicked out from underneath it.
OS X only takes 4.5GB, Apple could have incorporates a automatic recovery parttion check upon boot and restored OS X if if didn't boot, but they didn't do that.
Then when they have to place a recovery partiton like in Lion as they are phasing out the optical drive, they make one get online to get a new copy of OS X.
How stupid is that?
