Messages Automaticlly Deleted From Inboxes

I have 2 Macs (running OS10.9.5), 2 iPads & 2 iPhones 4S (running iOS8). I am using Apple Mail as my email client. If I delete an email message from the Inbox on one of my Macs or devices, that message is also deleted from the Inbox on all of the other Macs/devices as well. I assume that this is a syncing issue among the Macs/devices. Although probably unrelated, this problem started suddenly after I moved to a different town & subsequently changed ISP. The same problem occurs whether I use the ISP's server or the Gmail server.
This has me baffled. I would appreciate any suggestions that might help to resolve this issue. Thank you kindly!
Kit

Hello kitjv,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
What you are experiencing here is that your new ISP's email has an IMAP server, so this is expected behavior.  To learn more about email account types see below.
IMAP accounts
With an Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) account, incoming and outgoing messages are stored on a mail server until you delete them. When you connect to the mail server, all your mailboxes are synced so that the messages on your Mac are the same as those on the server. You can read and manage messages from any device that you use to access your account, and download messages or attachments to work with when you’re not connected to the Internet.
Microsoft Exchange accounts
An Microsoft Exchange account is similar to an IMAP account, with respect to messages being stored on a mail server and accessible from multiple computers and locations. You can use flags in an Exchange account with some limitations.
For an Exchange account to be set up in Mail, the Exchange server must support Exchange Web Services (EWS). To learn more about Exchange Server, contact your server administrator.
POP accounts
With a Post Office Protocol (POP) account, incoming messages are stored on a mail server and are downloaded to your Mac when you access your account. The messages remain on the server until they’re deleted from the server.

  • MAIL: Trying to settle long-lasting problem. Mail always immediately downloads the messages I delete from any IMAP mailbox. I'm running out of HD space!

    BACKGROUND
I only have 60GB of space on my MacBook Air. Currently, three long-standing IMAP accounts are taking up over 7GB of it!
I have seen several related discussions about this kind of problem, but they all seem to have been solved or glossed over with setting up the IMAP interaction so that messages are deleted from the server in addition to the device or with a "Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For" fix that doesn't work for me. I like being able to save all of my email history on servers (I'm often surprised by how many years back I have to search to find a piece of information I need), but I can no longer stand losing so much of my very limited local space to really old mail.
    PROBLEM
I'll refer to just one of the relevant accounts as "Gmail," since that's in parentheses when seen in these screenshots. These are its current Mailbox Behaviors settings:
Under my Gmail Inbox in Mail, I have deleted every message from before 2013. The mail from 2013 is all that I want stored on my MacBook Air.
Ultimately, I think this has something to do with the Archive (seen in the sidebar above, as well). Even when I've deleted everything from before 2013 in my Inbox, AND emptied the entire contents of Trash manually, the Archive still contains all of the mail from the server (yes, this account was started in 2011, but I have others that go back much further).
The cherry on top is that when I delete the same messages from the Archive as I've deleted from the Inbox, Mail immediately begins re-downloading all of those messages. Last time I tried this my laptop had to download 23000 messages, but here's a screenshot of proof with a smaller sample:
In case my Gmail server settings are useful to consider, here they are:
    Final Notes
    • There's a lot that I don't know about exactly how IMAP communication occurs between a device and a server. For my sake and the sake of anyone else who needs this kind of help, please clarify terms like "flags" and "archive" (since Gmail and Mail both use the term and I don't know think they mean exactly the same thing) if/when you use them.
    • If anyone does think that there's some sort of "Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For" solution to this, you should know that no matter what I have selected in Mail's sidebar (at no matter what level of indentation), the options available under that menu item are always grayed-out.
    • I want to keep using Mail. There's a lot that I like about it and I don't want to switch to Thunderbird or something else (remember, I need to save as much local space as I can).
    • I just upgraded to 10.9.0 Mavericks, but this problem has existed for me and behaved essentially just like this as long as I can remember. In fact, I think I recall the problem still existing before there was an Archive in the sidebar at all.

    UPDATE
I still have the problem, but when I checked on this post to see if anyone had commented and I simply hadn't received an e-mail, I noticed that all but the last of the images I included have stopped displaying (I had friends check, too).  Most of them were just visual examples of what I was explaining in hopes of giving context and all available info that I may not have personally viewed as relevant, but the first one, about my account's Mailbox Behaviors settings sure is important. These are the settings I have:
    • Store draft messages on the server — Check
    • Store sent messages on the server — Check
    • Delete sent messages — One month old
    • Store junk messages on the server — Check
    • Delete junk messages — One week old
    • Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox — Grayed-out and Check
    • Store deleted messages on the server — Grayed-out and Check
    • Permanently erase deleted messages when — Quitting Mail
I hope this helps. Please comment if I'm leaving out any other important information.

  • I am unable to see any POP3 or IMAP tab when I set up an account in my iphone 4S. Hence by default all my email accounts become IMAP and the messages are deleted from the server when I delete them from the iphone.

I am unable to see any POP3 or IMAP tab when I set up an account in my iphone 4S. Hence by default all my email accounts become IMAP and the messages are deleted from the server when I delete them from the iphone.

ok sorry everyone but i solved it myself but the solution is so nuts i've posted it here to help others who have the same problem.
to setup a comcast imap account on your iphone:
go to mail, contacts, etc in settings
    under accts, select add account
    select "other"
new screen, choose "add mail account"
now on the new acct screen you must enter your name, email address and password for your GMAIL acct ! (yes i said your gmail acct !, or some other acct with a NON comcast address).
    hit next
    then the acct verifies
when verified a screen will open with all the acct settings for this acct AND @ the top of the screen are the 2 buttons > imap or POP
select imap and THEN CHANGE ALL THE ACCOUNT information to the comcast account !
then hit next and the account will take a couple minutes to verify but it will verify and now you have a comcast imap acct set up on your iphone.  The problem must be that when the iphone sends the initial verify acct info to comcast (if you enter that information first) the comcast server is simply not setup yet to signal the iphone that there is an imap option.

  • If I delete someone from my contacts and a text message is that message also deleted from contact?

If I delete someone from my contacts and a text message between us is that message also deleted from person(contact) I deleted?

I think you are asking if you delete a message on your device, does that delete it on the other person's device? Is that what you are asking?
The answer to that would be No.

  • Mail not moving messages or deleting from server until application quitted

I have an Outlook.com email account. When I delete messages or move them in Apple Mail, the change is not reflected on the server until I quit the program completely. This isn't happening with other actions. Mail is immediately marked as read or flagged on the server for example. When I move or delete messages in Mail they actually show up in both the original location and the new location until the application is quitted.
Anything I can do to fix this?
    OSX Mavericks 10.9.1
    Apple Mail 7.1

    Hi Thomas
Yes...personal folders are mailboxes I've created to organize my mail. I know as a fact that this messages still are on the server even after moving them to "personal folders". anyway I think i can get around this issue by rightcliking on the account and then getting account information. I can then filter by "removed from my mac". at that stage there's an option to select those messages and "delete from server"...I think this will work...will try now.
    Thanks for your help

  • Messages not removed from Inbox when deleted on iphone

My company has an exchange based mail system and they provide imap access for devices like the iphone.
I set up the iphone to connect to the server and can read messages just fine. I set the Deleted items option in the Settings app for Mail to be the Deleted Items folder on the server.
When I delete the messages on the iphone this is what happens:
    1) The message disappears from the Inbox on the phone.
    2) The message appears in the Trash on the phone.
    3) The message appears in the Deleted Items folder on the server (as viewed from my normal work computer).
    4) The message stays in the Inbox folder on the server.
So, in sum, things do what they are supposed to do on the phone. On the server, I wind up with 2 copies of the same message - one in Inbox and one in Deleted Items.
I will point out that the same behavior occurs when I try to move an item from any folder to any other from the iphone. The message winds up in both the original and the target folders....
What do I need to do to set it up so that messages are removed from the originating folder on a delete or move?
    Thanks

    Sounds like typical POP behavior.
Is your mail account POP or IMAP?
If POP, then your mail activities are normal, that's how POP operates.
If it's IMAP, contact your server admin, as IMAP should be reflecting all activity across all devices with that specific account on it.

  • Messages won't delete from inbox

Just upgraded to iOS7 on both iphone 4s and ipad2. In mail, on both devices (which are linked) deleted messages won't erase from the inbox - even though they have been permanently deleted from the mail editor on my computer. When I swipe left and hit trash, the message goes away for one second then reappears. I've tried re-booting the phone, didn't work. I definitely have the right passwords associated with the mail account in place. And haven't made any other changes to the mail settings since upgrading the operating system. I noticed that no one else has posted this problem using iOS7 yet, but have seen some threads using earlier formats - none of which were helpful in fixing my problem   thoughts? suggestions?

rebuild your inbox using mailbox menu->rebuild.

  • Dequeued messages not deleted from one queue but other works

    Hi,
I have a multiconsumer queue with two local subscribers.
The messages go to the 'PROCESSED' state but do not get
    deleted from the queue table.
As a test, I created another single consumer queue in a different andqueue table, but the oracle deleted the 'PROCESSED' messages as expected.
In the multiconsumer queue, the messages are added by a trigger on the table. The enqueued messages varies from 100000 to 10000 per hour.
    aq_tm_processes = 5
    job_queue_processes=4
What else can I do debug the problem?
Is there any log file on the database server that I can
    look at any potential problem.
I would appreicate any responses. This could very well
be a newbie problem. I have not worked on advanced queues
before and nor has anyone else in our system.
    Thanx,
    HB.

I forgot to add that I am using default retention time
and when I query user_queue the retention time is set to zero for the multiconsumer queue.

  • Some messages not deleted from server after downloading

We have about 1,000 mail users, all of whom use Apple's Mail app to retrieve their mail using POP. We've seen users' mailboxes on the server where not all messages have been deleted after downloading, even though the user's app has been configured to delete messages immediately after downloading. The strange thing is, undeleted messages appear in large non-contiguous blocks of time. Like there will be 100 messages from January, then 250 from July, and so forth.
Has anyone seen this behavior? Can anyone help me a) understand why this is happening and b) how to fix it? Thanks in advance to whoever can help.

Thanks- but I don't want the messages deleted when they are deleted from my Mac, I want them deleted when I download them. However, I just found the setting so I'm fine.
    Thanks, again!

When I trash e-mails I have received on the iPad from Outlook, are the e-mails also deleted from the Outlook server at the same time?

    Hello falconrig,
It sounds like you have some questions about how your email account stores your information. This article has some information about different email account types and how they work:
    Mail (Mavericks): About email accounts
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14873
    IMAP accounts
With IMAP accounts, incoming and outgoing messages are stored on a mail server until you delete them. When your account connects to the server, it’s synced so that the messages on your Mac are the same as those on the server. You can read and manage messages from any device that you use to access your account, and download messages or attachments to work with when you’re not connected to the Internet.
    Microsoft Exchange accounts
These accounts are similar to IMAP accounts, in that messages are stored on a mail server and accessible from different computers and locations. You can use flags in an Exchange account with some limitations.
For an Exchange account to be set up in Mail, the Exchange server must support Exchange Web Services (EWS). Contact your server administrator for more information.
    POP accounts
With POP accounts, incoming messages are stored on a mail server and are downloaded to your Mac when you access your account. The messages remain on the server until they’re deleted from the server.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Email Sync Deleted From Inbox After Download

I have a Galaxy S5 and I have the email account setup to sync and download my email from my cable account.  The emails are reflected in my inbox on my phone; but after I download the email from the server to my Outlook on my pc, and deleted them from the server, my entire inbox on my phone is completely gone now.  How can I download the email to my phone and keep them there even though I download it to my pc and delete the emails from the server?  I used to have a Droid Bionic and I was able to download the email and it would stay on my phone email even though I later deleted them from the server.  I tried to unsync the email account but now it won't download any emails at all.  I hit refresh but it says the email sync is off, and no emails are downloaded.  Am I missing some setting?

the only way it stayed on your phone after deleting from outlook/server was if you weren't syncing between the 2.
as long as sync is off, refreshing does nothing.
i've gone the opposite way, deleting costco, walmart, etc from the phone, so i wouldn't have to scroll thru tons of emails on the phone, if i was only looking for a single email by not checking "leave a copy on server"....so i could look at costco, walmart, etc on the pc when i had more time.
    sorry you're having problems.

  • Gmail-Can't fine or delete from Inbox

Since updating to Maverick I can't delete messages from my inbox or file them away. Well I can but go to another account inbox and come back and its back in the inbox. Everyhing works fine on iOS devices. Odd, I can see the messages in the folder I file them but they still aren't removing from the inbox. Any idea?

This is one of the largest bugs in Mavericks’ Mail app, which affects Gmail accounts and Google Apps email accounts. This used to work just fine in previous versions of OS X, so it is a brand new problem in Mavericks:
Mail can’t delete messages from the Inbox unless Google’s “All Mail” folder is visible in Apple Mail. If you try to delete a message from the inbox, the message only disappears temporarily, then reappears moments later. It seems like Apple Mail never removes the “Inbox” label from the deleted messages, so the messages just keep reappearing back in the Inbox over & over again.
The workaround is not a desirable one: It requires the user to make Google's “All Mail” folder visible to IMAP clients (via Gmail's "Settings>Labels” page). However, this workaround is not desirable because of 2 bigger problems:
    (1) Making the “All Mail” folder visible in Apple Mail will suddenly make dozens of gigabytes of emails start taking up valuable hard drive space, because every single email that has ever been archived on Gmail/Google Apps will suddenly be written to the Mac’s hard drive. This can be a real problem on a machine with a small hard drive, such as the MacBook Air. Hiding the “All Mail” folder prevents these messages from taking up valuable hard drive space.  Not to mention that all of these messages are DUPLICATES OF MESSAGES THAT ALREADY APPEAR in other IMAP folders, so showing the "All Mail" folder in Mail is absolutely pointless.
    (2) Whenever the “All Mail” folder is visible, every new message that comes into the “inbox" also shows up as a new message in the “All Mail” folder as well, so new messages appear like they are coming in twice. Also, users are forced to mark their messages as “read" in two locations: the “Inbox" AND the “All Mail” folder.
The ideal solution would be for Mail to operate how it used to operate: Users should be able to delete messages from the Inbox, without having the “All Mail” folder visible in Apple Mail.
Please report this bug to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback and hopefully they will fix it in a software update soon!

  • Emails get deleted from inbox after viewing them on iphone 5s

    Hello all,
I've just upgraded to an unlocked (tmobile) iphone 5s 32gb w/ IOS 7.0.4 last week. (Unlocked / TMobile since i live/work in asia but previously lived in Texas)
    Prior to that i had an iPhone 5 16Gb w/ IOS 7.0.4.
I've setup yahoo, gmail and outlook/hotmail without any problems. However my business email account which i've always setup with IMAP to view on my iphone, ipad and work laptop is having problems several days after using the iphone 5s.
What happens is that whenever I check my work email, i dont even get all but just a few of them, once those are read and i go back into my inbox they are removed and the whole inbox shows: "NO MAIL"
I've checked all settings and removed not jsut the work account but all mail boxes as well.
Made sure its all IMAP not POP on all devices.
Incoming/Outgoing mail servers are on, with host and username and password entered correctly.
    Deleted Messages - Never removed.
    Delete Server -  Never
I've setup the new phone from a backup copy of my previous phone.
I've setup the new phone as NEW phone and still having same problems.
I've removed ALL mailboxes, rebooted and re-added them and still problems with work mailbox.
Never had a problem with mail on my iPhone 5 and current iPad is also fine.
    Any Ideas?

    You can configure it.
Go to : Settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendar/your email account and click on the account on top of the screen.  Click advanced.  Scroll down to the bottom, and under "deleted messages" options are : one day, one week, one month, never.  Based on your question you probably want "never".
Don't forget that if you get your emails through IMAP (you probably do), if your iPhone deletes the emails after one month, they will disappear from your laptop too...  This is the price to pay to have your emails in sync between your iPhone and laptop, though.
    Yves
