Messages Buddies window keeps changing size

The buddies list in Messages keeps growing longer and longer for me. Is there a way to make it stay the size that I want it to be?

It is a bit odd that you have that many Buddies that have gone Idle rather than showing any that are Away.
However it does not seem you have that many Buddies in total that would make a difference.
I notice that in the View Menu > Show Buddy Pictures is Off.
This as you will have found out does allow more Buddies in the space you have allowed. (each line is only as big as the Video and Audio Only icons)
If you make the Buddy List smaller than what you have shown (i.e. hide the Off Line group title bar and a few of the Buddies) does the Scroll bar appear ?
I don't Display the Off Line Buddies and also don't use the Off Line Group from them either. I am wondering if your setting are what makes the Buddy List dynamic in size.
My test.
I tried setting my Buddy lists with no pics.
I also set the Off Line Buddies and as a Group and "turned" the reveal triangle so they were hidden like yours.
I they set a couple of other AIM Buddy Lists to Off line.
Then I resized the buddy List to not shoe the Off Line Groups Title bar and also a few buddies up from that.
I then set the Off Line accounts to Available and logged them in.
In my Buddy list more Buddies dropped out of sight and the List did not resize.
Can you open a Finder window ?
Then go to the View Menu and chose Show Path Bar.
This will add some info across the bottom of the Window.
Can you also Select View Menu > Show View Options and Select the Modified option in the Show Column choices.
Now in the Finder > Go Menu hold down the ALT key and select the Library item that appears.
Navigate to the Preferences
Find the com.apple.ichat.plist one.
Alter the size of the Buddy List Or chose to Show Pictures and see if the Modified Date Changes (it should show the Time fro today's change).
The setting you are changing (window Size and what the window contains) are written to this .plist - or they ar if you Own like you should do and have Write Permissions (as well as Read ones) if the file settings are correct.
If you have lost Ownership of this File and changes will not be written to it.
It may be the Permissions have changed and you have lost the right to Write to it.
To find out, do a Get Info (CMD + i keys together) when the file is highlighted.
At the bottom of the Info panel is the Ownership and Permission Details.
Your shortname should appear in the list with Read and Write Permissions.
If you highlight this line and then use the Cogwheel icon at the bottom it should list "Make yourshortname (Me) the Owner" but it should be greyed out as it is already done.

[8.1 pro update1] Windows KEEPS changing and reinstalling keyboard layouts regardsless of IgnoreRemoteKeyboardLayout

Windows 8.1 is driving me nuts beyond believe once again. I have 8.1 Pro update 1 English, installed from the VLK iso from our Volume License / SPLA account. As we are a Dutch company, the Location is set to The Netherlands, as well as the date/time format.
Therefore in my keyboard settings the language is Dutch (NL) but I set my keyboard layout to US, as below:
As you can see there are no other languages our installed. This worked for years with Windows 7 and before with XP. Windows 8.1 however KEEPS changing my keyboard layout to plain Dutch making my keyboard unusable. The language bar in the systemtray, or whatever
it's called in this OS, shows THREE layouts, which are actually 'selectable' and work as if they were installed. However, they are not 'really' installed, as per the screenshots above.
This is driving me completely mad. Why on earth is Windows making descisions for me which I should be making myself? In addition, in my oppinion Windows should NEVER change somthing as trivial as a keyboard layout by itself. People don't change switch keyboard
even when logging on to a remote system that has a different layout configured. Whoever came up with this 'automatic switching per application' idea once again had no clue of real-life usage at all.
I've added those two languages I do NOT want to my keyboard layouts and removed them. Sure they are gone then, and as only language NLD with layout US is left, the language bar in systray is gone as well. After a few days all three are back, and my keyboard
is producing wrong characters again.
I've tried with regvalue HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout\IgnoreRemoteKeyboardLayout set to 1, to no avail at all. It just keeps changing. This should help to prevent my keyboard when changing when I RDP to one of my servers.
The advanced settings in Language don't help either:
'let me set a different input language for each app window' is unticked.
Override for default keyboard is now set to Dutch - US, like I want it. Doesn't help either.
I cannot reproduce it on demand, settings do NOT change when connecting to my RDP server(s). They do NOT change when I open any of my used programs, being IE, Chrome, CMD.exe, notepad and a few others. It shouldn't either as I disabled the 'keep settings
per application'.
I have changed the keyboard shortcut from alt-shift or whatever it was to 'none'.
How to prevent Windows 8.1 completely from changing the keyboard layout I use? Is there any way to check WHY or WHAT actually changes my keyboard?

This might be really late to this post but I've been having this issue while playing games, particularly those which are complex enough to require Control, Alt, Shift. At first like some people here suggested
Windows Key + Space was the cause, but even after removing all alternate layouts (for reference, I want the UK layout, but it was switching to the US Layout) it was persisting.
This post pointed me in the right direction, go into your Language Options
> Change Override (Advanced). At this stage I've noticed there is the Switching input methods section, look for
Change language bar hot keys and here I fount Alt + Shift
was being used for switching Between input languages - a key combo I'd probably hit quite often just purely by accident. You can change the key sequence to no binds.
I haven't fully tested it, but it appears to be working for now - and I hope its an extra option for people to look at if they're running into this issue.

Why do my folders in my finder keep changing size and the way I set them up ....??!?!?!?!

I cant seem to post a picture here but they are dis proprtionate to each other and ALL over the place, I set them up to be set up a certain way and it keeps changing. It is really getting me angry!!!! Any help??

Good grief!!!! I see what you mean now.
Hold down the option key>Finder>Go>Library>Preferences. Trash the com.apple.finder.plist file, repair permissions and restart your computer. Empty the trash.
Open up your messed up document folder and click on the gear like icon in its menu>Arrange by - select your arrangement>Show View Options. Click the Use As Default button. Your arraingements should now stick.

How can i set my fonts to keep webpages viewable they keep changing size?

You may need to disable the hardware acceleration if you have a problem with font display.
Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: [ ] "Use hardware acceleration when available"
You can increase the String pref <b>layout.css.devPixelsPerPx</b> from 1.0 to 2.0 in 0.1 steps to see what works best.<br />
In current Firefox versions this pref is a String value parsed to a float and allows to fine tune the dimensions of all elements (user interface and web pages) more precisely.

Adjoining cells keep changing size

Have added text to cells on several columns. The text can be of varying lengths. At first cells fit text, but by the time I finished a lot of the first column cells have stretched way out of proportion.
Have tried various things, but fixing one column just upsets another.
Is there any way to make all the cells fit the text, without disrupting the whole table? Any help would be appreciated as I've spent ages trying to fix it, without success. Thanks.

Columns are columns, they are not freeform with varying widths in each row. Think of them as columns, like in a newspaper. The entire column is a set width, regardless of the amount of text on any particular line.
You have a few choices:
If you have "wrap" selected for a cell, the text will never exceed the bounds of the cell, it will wrap to create multi-line text within the cell. The row height will change accordingly to accommodate the text. You can go back and reduce the height of the row but then you will not be able to see all of your text.
If you do not have "wrap" selected, the text can exceed the width of the cell if the cell to the right of it is blank. If the cell to the right is not blank then the text is truncated for display so it does not go outside of the cell (the text is there, you just won't see it all). You can increase the width of the column to accommodate the extra text. This increases the width of each and every cell in the column.
You can merge cells but I don't recommend doing this.
Resize column/row to fit content means that the column/row size will be increased or decreased to fit the largest thing in the column/row. So if one cell has a lot of text and others have little, it will be resized to fit the larger text and the other cells will have extra space.

Photostream for Windows keeps changing image file names

Hi, I have iCloud and the Photo Stream application installed on my Windows Vista PC. I have just returned from a trip abroad and took photos on both my iPhone 4 (updated with iOS6) and a separate digital camera. Having taken thousands of photos, I've managed to combine the two collections of photos into one and renamed them in sequence i.e. USA(1), USA(2), USA(3) etc. I want to be able to convert this completed photo collection into a Photostream to share with others on their iPhones and iPads respectively.
I know Shared Photostreams are limited to 1,000 photos each, however when I create and add the new collection of photos to a new Photostream album, it chooses to rename the files and display them out of the desired order. The file names are usually something like 'IMG_00605' and while some are in the correct order and placed next to one another, others are not. Despite playing with the display settings, i.e. Sort By>Name, Date Taken, Tags etc I still cannot get the photos to display in the order I set out in the first place. As you can imagine this is incredibly frustrating, having painstakingly gone through all my photos to ensure they were ordered and renamed sequentially.
Does anybody know how I can rectify this and display my photos in the order I want them to? Any suggestions would be greatly received.

Screen size keeps changing

sometimes when i am working in adobe cc suddenly my screen size changes and I cannot figure out why or how to change it back. Has this happened to anyone else?

Possible reasons a window would change size
Ctrl or Alt Spacebar and left click drag (standard zoom feature)
or my best guess, he has Zoom with mouse wheel check in General preferences. This operates completely by itself, (no other key needed) so would be very easy to make happen unintentionally.

Pages keeps changing the font size! I typed a large heading as a title, and when I try to change to a smaller font for the body of the letter, it changes the size back to the larger size! I am getting SO FRUSTRATED! I've spent over an hour trying to get the stupid program to let me just type my letter! Can anyone help?

The only one left is the "unsubmitted text" dialogue, which would not be a problem if I were not a Facebook user; after updating the "Richard is..." field (which does not require a manual submit to actually send) I get the above message. This is obviously Safari just not realising that the info has been sent and is therefore (I imagine) one for Apple themselves to answer!!

Not being a Facebook User, I'm not sure how to respond to the error situation. However, this would be something to report to Apple as a bug via the Safari Menu. First, open to the page in question, then select "Report Bugs to Apple".

Icon size and spacing keeps changing to miniscule size

I keep running into the situation when I open a finder window, the icon size and spacing shifts from what I have set as a default. I have a specific icon size of 64 that i use and the spacing is close together. Every now and then, the icons are so tiny as to not be legible and spacing changes to 2 inches between icons. No matter how many times I change the show view options they do not stay. Why does this happen and not stay as I want??

Try deleting the com.apple.finder.plist.
Hold down the option key while using the Finder “Go To Folder” command. Enter ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Relaunch Finder ( Command-option-esc, select Finder and Force quit) . If it works okay, delete the plist(s) from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got them from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.

You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.4. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

Command 1 in Messages not bringing up Buddies Window

When I press Command 1 in Messages, it not bringing up Buddies Window. I can go to Window and select Buddies fine. Any ideas?

So from there the Accounts are logged in (Ticked) in Messages > Accounts and Enabled in the Preferences > Accounts.
A Combined List (Buddies in the Window Menu) is Listed but CMD+1 does not bring the Buddy List window to the Front.
I notice that I have 11 accounts listed in Messages > Accounts of which Bonjour is one.
Not all are logged in
These are counted as 10 Non iMessage accounts in the Preferences > Accounts

My Bonjour account is Enabled. (It is one of the 11)
You seem to be saying you have six accounts in total that are showing and ticked/checked in Message Accounts and as a consequence you have 5 non iMessages accounts which are Enabled ...
... but ...
Then you say the Bonjour Account is NOT enabled.
This does not add up.
In an earlier post you stated...
If I change uncheck "Show all my accounts in one list" on the General Preferences tab then my Windows menu looks similar to the image you provided but the Command keys 1-6 (in my case)
In my Window Menu I show 9 Accounts (iMessages does not appear here) as I have one account not logged in.

Repair your Apple software update.
Go to START/ALL PROGRAMS/Apple Software Update. If it offers you a newer version of Apple Software Update, do it but Deselect any other software offered at the same time. Once done, try another iTunes install

I click on a link or start typing text in a box on a webpage, any page, and the browser window either randomly changes size, reduces & goes to the toolbar, or some other strange random thing occurs. Why is this?

Whenever I am using Firefox, when I am on a webpage (any webpage) & I either click on a link in that page, start typing in a box, click on a button, or click on a tab, the browser window either reduces to the toolbar, or just changes size, usually from full-screen to 2/3 of its size. I reinstalled Firefox (downloaded from the web) after wiping my hard drive because I was having so many problems from my browser constantly crashing, to the computer itself crashing often, to the computer running exceptionally slow. At first everything seemed fine. But then after having opened my computer a few times, a few different windows began to freeze, then that stopped, then this thing with the browser started a few times later after opening it. Now it does it every time I open it. Also, whenever I try to click on a button on other windows on my computer, I get the 'warning' sound, nothing happens, then after a couple more tries, the button works. All of this is just weird. I had antivirus protection on my computer, but it apparently did not catch whatever virus infected my computer, or the damage was already done when it did get it. I thought once the hard drive was wiped, that everything would be ok, but then these weird things began to start up, and now I am wondering.... Of course, it could also be something wrong with the browser, too. I've also had some trouble getting my printer to working again, but I've managed to solve that problem.

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

New message window keeps popping up

The new message window keeps popping up without prompting, usually twice in a row. I notice
this particularly when I first open the Mail program. The funny thing is that you can't actually type in any text in the new message window. Any ideas???

It seemed to work itself out after several days.

Windows 7 / Arch Linux Dual-Boot - win7 keeps changing the boot flag!

Its been a long while since I had to dual-boot with windows on the same machine.
I 've installed windows 7 and then arch linux and installed GRUB on my sda1 where the /boot partitions is located at.
I've managed to boot into arch successfully and later into windows also successfully.... but when i tried to boot into arch again I wasn't greeted with the typical GRUB boot screen... grub was ignored completely and win7 booting began as if it was the only OS in my hard drive.
I've used the gparted live cd and realized that the boot flag has changed from my /boot partition (sda1) to my windows partition (sda2). I've changed it back and I was able to boot into arch again. but when I rebooted to win7 and then to arch the same thing has happened. The boot flag keeps changing whenever im rebooting into windows making impossible for me to boot with GRUB unles I manually change the flag again.
I haven't installed GRUB into the MBR because I hear it is a bad practice when you have a windows OS also installed (something with service packs not being able to install, among other things). I also don't want to use the easyBCD method to boot arch using the win7 loader.
here is the partition scheme on my 500gb sata drive :
/dev/sda1 /boot 250mb (primary)
/dev/sda2 windows 7 ntfs 100gb (primary)
/dev/sda3 swap 4gb (primary)
/dev/sda5 / 16gb (logical)
/dev/sda6 /var 8gb (logical)
/dev/sda7 /home the rest of the hd space (logical)
What am I doing wrong and how do i prevent the boot flag from changing?

2. as mentioned in the thread, just install grub to mbr and chainload windows. It works just fine and is the easiest way to get it working reliable.
