Messages copied from .mac inbox (Imap) to an on-my mac folder have disappea

I read the advice in the discussion groups on saving storage space on .mac account and copied my messages from the .mac inbox to an on my mac mailbox called 2006. When I finished the copy, all the messages were there. I checked several times to make sure. Then I moved some messages to a smart folder called "off my mac" so that I could later delete them. These were about 1/3, not all of the message I took out of the .mac inbox. The "off my mac" mailbox set up, but there none of the messages I had set the rules to put inside were there. However the other messages in 2006 mail box were there. That was 2 days ago. Now, there are NO messages from 2006 on my computer at all. I did not delete the messages- not from the server, nor from the computer. Where have they gone? How do I get them back. I already searched on my hard drive. They are not there. Help!!!

I don’t fully understand what you say. It looks like you may have inadvertently done something that caused the messages to be deleted. Messages cannot be “moved” to smart mailboxes. Smart mailboxes don’t store messages; they just show messages that are stored elsewhere. There is no way you can have a message stored in a smart mailbox only. For the messages to appear in the smart mailbox, they must exist somewhere else AND satisfy the smart mailbox criteria.
Have you tried searching for those messages in Spotlight? If the messages are neither on your disk nor on the server, and you don’t have a backup, your only option in the case of Mail 2.x is to try to salvage as many deleted *.emlx files as possible with a data recovery tool such as Data Rescue II, TechTool Pro, or FileSalvage. Of these, the only one I know for sure that can currently recover deleted *.emlx files is FileSalvage. Stop using your computer right now if you want to try that, as anything you do with the computer may cause the deleted files to be overwritten.

  • What is the direct connect method for transfering photos from my macbook pro to my iphone without using iTunes syncronization? (iow: a simple photo copy from mac to iphone?)

I feel like I should know the answer to this. I can't believe it is a hard question.
What is the direct connect method for transfering photos from my macbook pro to my iphone without using iTunes syncronization? (iow: a simple photo copy from mac to iphone?)
    Easy? Right?
Just plug my iphone in to a mac and copy a photo from the mac to my iphone.
I don't have internet access - I can't email it, or mobileme it, or dropbox it.

iTunes. Other than that there is no direct method. However, do try the iPhone forums.

  • Cannot copy from Mac formatted disks to PC Fat32 disks anymore!

    HElp!
Since I upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6, everything I copied from Mac disks to Fat disks always went well.
Few weeks later, I ran Disk Utility in 10.6.2 and "repaired" all my drives including my Fat disks.
At the end of the repair, it said everything was OK and the last sentence of the report said (which I do not remember exactly) said something like it did some changes and finishes that sentense with "...as required" (French OS says: "tel que requis")
That made me a little suspiscious but everything went fine so i did not pay any more attention.
Now I realize that since then, it is impossible for me to copy from Mac Disks to Pc Disks. I receive an (Error -36) ???
What did DiskUtility did as "required" modification?
I need these Fat partitions since I often carry stuff to PC.

    K T wrote:

-36 is a software permissions error only. No indication of any hardware issues, failures, etc.
no it's not. you've been told this several times. error -36 has nothing to do with permissions.
What did DiskUtility did as "required" modification?
Most likely it felt the need to repair the drive's index - perhaps it was confused by the non-mac format, tho.
I would format them using Disk Utility via Snow Leopard and try again.

OS X errors are cryptic. error code -50 says error in user parameter list.
You need to give us WAY more info if you want help.
What is WD for Mac? If it's an external drive - did you install any software for it? (shouldn't need to)
How much free space on the Mac HD? Size of the file(s)?
Is it a USB drive or Firewire or Thunderbolt?

If you failed to maintain a backup copy, then you would have to import the disks again.

When I want to copy it to a thumbdrive ... click/drag is the standard, but it's never worked with iPhoto ... & it seems, it STILL doesn't work with the iOS-looking "photo."  sigh.
FWIW, you can drag a photo, video, or a selection of several items from the Photos main window into a folder (including the desktop), but you get a recompressed version at a (non-adjustable) fixed pixel resolution that is typically lower than the original, & it will be the edited version if you have edited the photo in Photos. Because of the recompression & resolution changes, it can take from a fraction of a second to many minutes for the dropped copies to appear in the folder, particularly if you are dropping multiple items and/or large video files.
However, if you hold down the option key during the drag & drop, you get an unaltered version of the original(s) & the process takes no longer than a normal file copy.
This may be useful for copying to thumb drives.

  • Messages disappeared from my Inbox after Rebuilding

    Hi,
I accidentally clicked on "Rebuild" in Mail and messages of the last 3 months have disappeared from my Inbox. However, they are still there in the Mail folder on the hard disk. How do I make them reappear in my Inbox?? Help!!

I had the same problem, after rebuilding, the Inbox was empty. I tried all the fixes I found here and on the forum numerous times with no luck. I was able to recover most email using a Time Machine restore, but the Inbox still was not accepting any new mail. Finally, realizing that my MobileMe mail server was fine, and that Mail continued to work on my iPod, I opened my Mail preferences and deleted my MobileMe account from the machine, and then added it back, configured exactly as it was before. Bingo! Everything is back to normal.

  • Mail messages disappear from the Inbox, but are still in ~/Library/Mail

    Folks,
I'm encountering a perplexing problem on my parent's eMac; any input would be very much appreciated...here's the story:
Over the weekend, I upgraded my Dad's 1.25GHz eMac G4 to Tiger (it had been running 10.3.9). The upgrade went smoothly, and all seemed well. I applied all the latest Apple Software Updates to get the eMac to 10.4.6, and once again, all seemed well. I performed the usual Disk Utility "permission fixing," as well, and nothing came up that seemed unusual. I did notice that I encountered the "spinning beach ball" a fair amount during routine operations, but I attributed this to the fact that the eMac only has 512MB of RAM (it's going to receive another 512 in a few days), and that I was just being impatient, given that I am accustomed to my own machine, which is a relatively snappy dual 2.5GHz G5 with the full complement of 8GB of RAM. A day or so later, Dad reported that the Mail app was not starting; upon clicking the Mail icon, it simply bounced several times, and then simply stopped bouncing. I looked at the crash logs and found that Mail could not locate a needed file/library located in /System/Library/Frameworks/SyncServices.framework. In addition, I noticed that the iCal app and the Address Book app were also crashing (the icons of each would bounce, just like Mail's, then stop, without the apps actually firing up). The crash logs revealed that those apps were also looking for this mysterious file, which apparently had somehow been misplaced/lost. I used the "Pacifist" program to reinstall the contents of that particular directory (using the Tiger install CD). Much to my relief, once that directory was reinstalled, the apps once again started up and worked normally. HOWEVER, I noticed some odd behavior with the Mail app. The first thing that became evident was that the Inbox did not show all the messages that had been there before. Looking under the ~/Library/Mail/POP-Dad's account/INBOX.mbox/Messages directory, however, it was clear that all the messages were indeed there (in the form of the individual .emlx files). They just did not seem to be displayed in the Inbox of the Mail app. I tried doing a "rebuild" of the mailbox, but this did not result in any additional messages being displayed. Any thoughts?
The other perplexing behavior is this: the Mail app on the eMac can send and receive mail, but, once you click on a newly-received (unread) message, and then go to another mail box (say, for example, the "Drafts" or "Sent" folders), and then return to the Inbox, the message that was just received is no longer displayed/listed in the Inbox. Once again, looking in the ~/Library/Mail/POP-Dad's account/INBOX.mbox/Messages directory reveals that the message IS there (again, in its own .emlx file), but is simply not being displayed in the Inbox. I can click on the individual .emlx files, and they open new windows in Mail, from which you can hit "reply" or "forward," as normal; it just won't display the actual message that was originally in the Inbox. Sent messages, however, seem to be saved/displayed normally.
I've searched through the Mail discussion forum, and while I've found discussions along generally similar lines, I have not located an entry dealing with these particular symptoms. As such, any input/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your time.
    -Javier

Regarding the missing package that you reinstalled with Pacifist, it would have been better to fix the problem by reinstalling the Mac OS X 10.4.6 Combo Update. Actually, you're going to have to do that anyway, as the package you installed came from an older version of Mac OS X and could now be out-of-sync with the rest of the system. Not only that, but if there was something amiss with that package, chances are that something else went awry as well, so you should really reinstall the latest Combo Update. Read the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the boot volume (not just permissions) before installing the update, and no applications should be running while installing it.
As to the missing messages, the conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.0 is broken. Take a look at the following thread to better understand the problem:
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
If you see a strangely named Messages-XXXXXX folder within any of the *.mbox folders in the Finder, that means the conversion didn't proceed as it should, so be careful about deleting the old files, as they may contain messages that didn't come through. Better just move them out of there if you wish.
I partially disagree with Allan (and with Ernie, who also has troubleshooted a lot of similar cases and believes the old files could still be troublesome after a successful conversion as well) in that I don't think the problem with Mail 2.0 is the presence of the old files, but rather that, as a result of the improper conversion, there is something wrong with Envelope Index and with some of the converted messages themselves. IMO, the old files shouldn't be a problem if the conversion worked properly. Mail should just ignore those files when it sees a proper Messages folder in the mailbox folder.
The reason you cannot see in Mail some messages for which an *.emlx file exists is precisely that there is something wrong with Envelope Index. Mail will simply ignore any *.emlx file for which a corresponding entry does not exist in Envelope Index. Actually, Mail doesn't look into the Messages folder at all when displaying the mailbox contents, it just loads whatever there is in Envelope Index. If that information is wrong, the information displayed by Mail will be wrong as well; it may refer to messages that no longer exist, ignore messages that do exist, display one message but load a different one when you open it, etc.
Re-creating Envelope Index without cleaning up the mailboxes first would probably fail and it could even make things worse, though. That's what makes troubleshooting these issues harder than it should be.

  • Copy from MAC to PC missing artwork

I have a macbook pro and a vista PC desktop. on my mac, my itunes is exactly how I want it, so i removed all music from my music folder on my pc and copied my itunes folder from the mac, to my network drive, to my pc. i noticed on the pc that the actual artists folders needed to be in the music directly, not in itunes, so i now have all the artist folders in music/ on the PC. there is also an itunes folder in there that has the library and other files from the mac. when i open itunes on the pc, it looks great. i got all my music, my ratings, and my playlists. however, i don't have all the album art. on the mac, the structure is music/itunes/album artwork and on the pc it's the same. it looks like some of the artwork is showing up now, but only a few items and there's nothing in itunes that's telling me it's getting the artwork. is this the right location for the album artwork folder on the PC and will itunes get it all if I leave it open????
secondly, i'm sorta sick of managing multiple computers with the same music libary and ratings. it's annoying as all ****. i am going to get the time capsule network drive to store all my music there. now do i do that?? i move my itunes music folder there and then how does itunes on each pc know to use that folder for current music and when adding music, and will i then be able to rate songs and create playlists on any computer and they will show up on all??
sorry for the long explanations. thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light for me.

There should be no problem in using files saved to disk with a MAC and with a Windows machine. Equally LR itself is happy to use the same catalog on both machines, I do it every day. So perhaps you could describe a little more what is happening. Are you getting an error message when trying to read a file? Does your PC recognise the external drive when it is connected? Have you tried opening the actual catalog on both machines?

  • Copying from mac to windows pc over a network. jesus ******* christ.

***. do i really have to ******* copy every single file by hand? it's like os x decides which files to copy or not.
i want to copy 20 files to one destination. 10 go through. the rest don't. i copy 5 files one by one to the same directory by hand and it works... i try to copy the five remaining files and it is simply impossible.. i have to copy them to another totally random directory before it works... is this a serious operating system? why did i pay 6000 dollars for this piece of crap?

no, the thing is can copy some files from the mac to a certain directory and others not. i have a dir on my pc where everyone can copy to. And that i can. i copy 10 files - and all is ok.. then i have to copy the next 5 files one by one for it to work... (it's still the same directory). then the last files i have to copy to another directory... it may be a sub directory on the pc or just another directory that have exactly the same rights...
if i try to copy all 20 files at the same time then it looks like that 20 files are copied until the very last moment - then some files are deleted again. then i try to copy 10 files.. doesn't work.. then i try to copy 5 files... and it works... but if i would have copied 6 files - all of them them would be deleted.
    it doesn't make sense.

  • Problems with iTunes library copied from Mac

I copied my iTunes from my Mac, and authorized the Windows 7 iTunes to be one of my legal computer.   Some songs wouldn't copy because Windows could not handle the file name or path, but most did.
But iTunes can't find the songs.    When I double click the the songs within iTunes\iTunesMedia\Music, they play, and my iTunes shows one broken link and the new link, which apparently is in the right place.
How do I change things so that iTunes is looking the right place?

I was having the same problem and I knew there had to be an easy answer. I knew it for sure when I saw your topic unanswered. Just right click, or control click on the bar where it says name, album, genre, etc. and select "track number," this will give you the option to put them in their original order.
You can also access this under "view options" in the view pull down menu.

  • Migration assistant to copy from mac mini internal drive to second internal drive fails, 'not enough space'

I have a 2011 mac mini and I just installed a second internal HDD using an OWC data doubler kit. So now I have two internal HDD.
The original HDD is 750 GB and the new one is 1 TB. After the installation I manually formatted the 1 TB drive with one Mac OS Extended  (Journaled) partition.
I then installed a fresh copy of Mavericks on the new 1 TB and during the installation tried to use Migration Assistant to move my user account over (mainly to get all the iTunes and iPhoto stuff).
The original HDD 610 GB used, so 140 GB free.
Migration Assistant correctly detects the original HDD but when I try to copy things over it says there is not enough space.
Can anyone help me figure out what I need to do to get Migration Assistant to move my stuff from the original HDD over to the new one?

I feel like such an idiot. I had manually tried to copy files over using the command line before I found out about the Migration Assistant tool. My manual copy had used up 500 GB.
I deleted all of that and now I have no issues with the Migration Assistant.
    Sorry for taking your time!
