Messages Disappeared/Can't Move Messages to Folder

I am the entire IT department for my company, and one of my users has run into a weird and very troubling problem. For quite some time (years), she has been moving messages from her IMAP account into a local folder. This folder contained hundreds of messages, perhaps even thousands. Several days ago, she attempted to drag a message into the folder, only to have the message jump back to the message list. Concerned, she clicked on the folder to find that it was completely empty. She let me know, and I immediately checked her Library and found that the corresponding folder under Mail is also empty. I can't find any trace of the missing mail anywhere - nothing in the Trash, nothing in Deleted Messages - it's just GONE. The user isn't an expert, but she's far from computer illiterate, and in talking to her I don't have any reason to believe that user error is to blame. Does anyone have any idea why this might have happened (and hopefully tips on how to retrieve the missing mail)? I've verified the hard drive and checked permissions (grabbing at straws) and both were fine.

In fact my 'drag' ability seems to have disappeared altogether... just tried to drag a new option onto my toolbar and drag just doesn't work!

Delete your mail account/s and re-add them.
This is what worked for me but I've read about other solutions that have worked for some people as well:

  • HT201104 how can I move my iCloud folder to another drive on my pc

How can I move my iCloud folder from one drive (C:\) on my PC to another drive (E:\) on the same PC?   I have more space available on E:\ than I have on C:\ so I want to take advantage of the extra space, but not sure how or if I can move my iCloud folder?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can move data from one account to another, this can be done on a computer.

  • Does MacOS recognize Windows directory structure? Can I move an entire folder (consisting of subfolders and files) from Windows to Mac?

Can I move an entire folder (consisting of subfolders and files) from Windows to Mac?

    Mustafafromnc,
if you’re talking about a USB drive, then it will probably have an exFAT filesystem. Modern versions of OS X can read from and write to exFAT filesystems without problems, so you would be able to move Windows folders, subfolders, and files from an exFAT filesystem to an OS X filesystem.

  • Can I move iCloud Drive folder to my Time Capsule?

Can I move iCloud Drive folder to my Time Capsule?
I have 250Gb storage on my Macbook, but plan to by the 500Gb storage plan from Apple. To do that I'd need to used the iCloud Drive folder on an larger external hard drive, instead of my own Macbook...
Does anyone knows if that can be done?
I also use Drop Box and it's local drive can be 'move' to an external HD easily...
    Tks!

The iCloud Drive folder is is stored in your user library, in the folder ~/Library/Mobile Documents
If you want to move this folder to an external drive, you would have to relocate your home folder there. Moving the home folder is supported, but not moving parts of the user library.
But that would not be practical on a portable Mac to move the home folder to an external drive, because you could not log in without connecting the external drive.

  • Can I move the application folder in 10.7

I have recently upgraded to an iMac 27" with the i7 - now using 256 SSD plus a 2 TB drive.  When moving "lots" of applications from my older MacPro I will need more room than 256 - can I move the App Folder to the 2 TB drive and continue to have full access?

It causes problems for backing up if you do.  Better to get a larger internal hard drive*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Or archive documents you don't use frequently away from the internal hard drive.   But make sure you always have at least two copies of your data at all times.

  • HT1229 Can i move the iPhoto folder onto an external HDD? Will it work the same way after moving onto an external HDD? do I then need to have the external connected at all times, even when I don't use iPhoto?

I have a macbook pro, but the amount of pictures I have now exceeds 500GB
I want to have all the pictures in iPhoto, so I could see them and edit them in iPhoto.
Which means... I need the iPhoto file folder in an external HDD to use iPhoto that way.
Can i move the iPhoto folder onto an external HDD?
Will it work the same way, as if the iPhoto folder is on the internal drive?

    yes
    yes
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • How can I move a mailbox folder and messages in it to a My Documents folder?

I use meailboxes in Mail to keep project communications in while I am working on them. When the project is completed, I would like to move that mailbox and all its contents to a folder in My Documents. How do I do that?

    Hello:
When you export a mailbox, it is exported with a .mbox suffix.  You would need to import it to read it.
I thought about what you want to do...
If you use Time Machine, you could simply delete the folder you are finished with....you could always retrieve the entire mailbox or specific messages.
I do not know of a way that you can simply move the messages to someplace else on your system.

  • Can't Move Messages in Exchange Account

    Hello,
I'm one of very few Mac users in my office and was very excited to find that the Exchange server was finally updated (I think) to allow me to use Mail. I can send and receive messages fine, iCal and Address Book sync as expected but I cannot move messages between any folder. I get the warning "The message "Some Message Name" could not be moved to the mailbox "Some Mailbox name" An error occured while moving messages to mailbox "Some Mailbox name". In viewing the Console Log, here's what I get:
    * Assertion failure in -[EWSCopyItemsResponseOperation executeOperation], /SourceCache/Message/Message-1078/MessageStores.subproj/EWSCopyItemsResponseOpe ration.m:47
Copying an EWS message returned success, but didn't have 1 item in the response message, got 0 items; most likely one of the Exchange Server components is not running Service Pack 1 Update Rollup 4
I was under the impression that I wouldn't be able to even connect to the Exchange server without the above version update. As somebody who knows nothing about the structure of an Exchange server, are there multiple components that need to be updated rather than a combo type update?

I've got the same problem. I'm new to Mac, this is quite frustrating. I can't get Entourage to connect to the Exchange 2007 server, Mail connects and can send and receive messages, but I can't delete messages or move them to folders.
    Any ideas?

  • Can't move messages between mailboxes

When I move messages, they turn gray in the original folder, and then are not moved. Or maybe some of them are, but most are not. Or they are moved, but then moved back. I thought it might be filters, but am pretty sure all relevant ones turned off. The messages and folders are "on my mac" so imap servers are presumably not involved.

Oh, I just did a bit more searching in the forum here, and found this answer. I tried it and it worked for me:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8994288&#8994288
"Please use Rebuild on the Inbox -- click on Mailbox in the menubar, and choose Rebuild. Be aware that during Rebuild all messages will seem to disappear, but they will come back."
    (Thank you to Ernie.)
I have multiple mailboxes -- I had to click on each mailbox individually for Rebuild to work, and I also did the rebuild on one of my archive folders.

  • Can't move messages around

    I am using Gmail+Mail 3.5.
The inbox messages can't be moved/deleted. When I move messages to other folders, The messages will turn to grey but stay in the inbox. The target folder will have a copy of the message in regular color.
Before that, it seems Mail break my internet connection couple times. Maybe it is related.
    Thanks,

I'm having these problems too. Initially I couldn't move the message from the inbox to another folder; the subject would grey and no movement would happen. I shut down Mail and then on reopening, found several copies of the message in the box I'd moved it to, plus the original still in the inbox. The copies did not show any content. However, I noticed an older message of the same title and same sender within that box, which opened correctly. I tried deleting the copies and they just went to the grey color and did not delete. Other than shutting Mail, I don't know of any work around.

  • Can't move messages between folders

When trying to drag a message into a Public Folder setup for Spam, I receive the following error:
"The IMAP command “UID COPY” (to Public Folders/GFI AntiSpam Folders/This is spam email) failed for the mailbox “INBOX” with server error: There is no replica for that mailbox on this server.."
This is an Exchange 2003 public folder. I've created the account in Mail as an Exchange account (same settings as Tiger - in which this operation was successful).
I can move messages around fine between other folders in the account, just not into any Public Folders.
    Anyone got any suggestions?

    No, not yet.
I'm going to give support a call tomorrow - if this doesn't get resolved I'm going back to Tiger.

  • After 1.1.1 can't move messages

After the 1.1.1 update, any message I try to move to another mailbox (move from trash to inbox etc.) just disappears! I've already done a complete restore through iTunes to no avail. Every other aspect of Mail, or the iPhone for that matter works fine.
Am I the only one? Please help.
    Thanks in advance.
    RJohn

I messed around with both this morning, and Yahoo seems to work perfect. It will even sync to whatever you do on your computer online, for ex: I created a save folder for my emails and moved several emails from my inbox to my save folder online via PC. Any changes I made reflected on the iPhone as well and vice versa... I'm still having trouble with Gmail though, I even deleted my account and entered it back in. I also noticed that even if my emails are marked as read online, they still appear as new emails on the iPhone. Again only problems are with Gmail.

  • Can't move messages

Did a fresh install of Leopard onto a brand new HD. Legacy email from Tiger ported over.
When I try to move a message from my inbox to a particular folder the message simply gets grayed out without actually moving it. The body of the email is blank.
Any clue what's going on here? The Apple Help thingy isn't very helpful here.

Ok - I answered my own question, but for anyone interested ...
Select the mail folder and choose "Mailbox/Rebuild". It also solved the problem of deleted messages that wouldn't delete, but would simply 'gray' out.

  • Can't move messages to trash on iPhone 5

I created a new IMAP email account on my iPhone 5.  When I try to delete a message, I get a message saying ?Unable to Move Message. The message could not be moved to the mailbox Trash."
I've had an IMAP account on this phone from a previous hosting service, no problem to delete messages. I have no problem deleting from the same account on my laptop and tower.   I'm wondering what the issue might be.

    Good day mate,
Recently, I adjust my settings because of the error message.
    Here's the guide:
    How-to fix this error
    1. Press the Home button on your iPhone and choose Settings.
    2. Scroll down and click “Mail, Contacts, Calendars” from the list.
    3. Click your email account – it should have an arrow to the right of the email address displayed.
    4. Scroll to the end on the settings and click Advanced.
    5. Scroll down and tap the empty IMAP Path Prefix.
    6. Enter INBOX in capitals, then click ‘Accounts’ at the top left and click ‘Done’ at the top right twice to close the settings.
    7. Press the Home button and then re-open Mail.
    8. You will now be able to delete or move your emails on your iPhone without the error message appearing!
I hope this will help :)
    Cheers!
