Messages multi person video conference broken in ML

For several years four of us have met in a daily 4-way one hour video conference using iChat and then later the Messages beta.  While it has not been perfect it has always been a useable conference.  Immediately upon installing Mountain Lion we found that the video conference would be unuseable when the third person was added to the conference.
The normal configuration is that the conference host's image is at the bottom center of the conference screen with the other three conference members in larger windows immediately above the host in a horizontal string of three images.  After installing ML all four of us experince complete distortion of the images with then being strung in vertical windows that contain one or all of the conference participants in each of two of three vertical windows.  Not only are there mutiple occurrances of each participant but the images themselves have distorted aspect ratios.
The problem appears only on the machines that have been upgraded to Mountain Lion.  If one of the confree's uses Lion, rather than ML, then that machine never receives distorted images even while others on the conference using ML are receiving distorted images.
The machines that we use do not seem related to the problem rather Mountain Lion appears to be the key.  The machines used by the group are:
1- Mid 2012 MacBook AIR, 1 - Mid 2011 MacBook Air, 2- Late 2009 Mac minis, 1- 2008 Aluminum MacBook, 1-2008 Aluminum iMac and 1 late 2007 plastic iMac (Lion only on this machine).
It would be nice if any other 3-4 person Massages video conference users would verify this video problem under Mountain Lion.  Please respond back here to see if it is a widespread issue.
Mike

sorry but i am totally confused.
i just spent the last 4 hours trying to get multi video chat to work with Messages in 10.8.2 and so far nothing works.  How are you doing this?
For one, Facetime seems to be completely void of any multi video functionality.
Now comes the confusing parts, if I enter a friends' gmail acct to start a video chat via Jabber it automatically defaults to iMessage which opens then Facetime.  so i then tried to call them using a different gmail acct which wasn't associated with iMessage and... yes we were able to start a video chat.
Now at the bottom of the video window is a little "+" icon which only seems to work if i add people before anyone answers.  after the first person answers i am unable to add anyone.  is this normal?
furthermore when i try to chat with multiple people via jabber it tells me "This server does not support group chats".  what?!
has anyone been able to add multiple jabber buddies to a text chat in Messages?

  • Multi-person video conference iChat to AIM 5.9 on PC

Is there a way to have multi person video conference involving a buddy that's using AIM 5.9 on a PC?
If I'm on a video chat with another iChat buddy and try to invite a AIM-on-PC buddy, it simply doesn't work. If I'm on a video chat with the AIM-on-PC buddy, the plus sign is grayed out. I can otherwise easily support a four-way video conference, so long it involves only iChats...

You cannot do multiperson video conferencing involving both iChat and AIM PC users. I think that is what the first responder meant to say.
You can use SightSpeed to do multiperson video conferencing among both Mac and PC users. There are both PC and Mac versions of SightSpeed, and it is necessary that all users be running SightSpeed software and not iChat or AIM for PCs.
Also, the person hosting the SightSpeed multiperson conference must have the $4.95 per month paid version of SightSpeed. If you are interested, you can find more information at:

There is no way that I know of to install iChat because it is not supported in ML. You may want to read a couple of these Threads

  • "computer can not initiate a multi-person video chat" ?

2 of us have MacBook Pros, third guy has new MacBook.
    Our MacBook's have OS X 10.5.8,
The new MacBook has OS 10.6.1.
Me and the other person can iChat with 3 other ppl,
but when we added the new guy as a buddy, neither one of us could get him to come up.
He said When the call came in, two (2) video screens popped up and if he hit accept on
either one, it would decline on our end. (this happened no matter which MacBook Pro initiated the convo)
We then had the MacBook try to initiate the 3 way and it came up with an error that said
"computer can not initiate a multi-person video chat"
I've never even heard of that.
Is this a glitch, or a setting that needs to be changed?
Seems weird that the older models do it fine, but the new one is not configured right, but maybe we're missing something.
    thx

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
You are saying that, no matter who Hosts, when they invite the 10.6.1 Buddy he gets two Invite windows ?
This sounds like he is connected to the Internet twice.
On Sending the Visible Invite iChat does not check the validity of the Return Message.
You can be logged in twice for Text Chatting so it is not an uncommon state to exist.
However in most cases this is either two apps or two computers.
When iChat gets past the Visible Invite stage as only one reply get returned for the Acceptance it moves into sending a SIP invite separately on a different port and part of this Process is to confirm where the Visible Invite went to is where the SIP return data is coming from.
If there are two connections to the Internet at his end (and there are several causes) you will get an Error 7 showing when the Video chat is ended by all parties.
Error 7 = Remote IP Invalid
The Message you are getting may point to another problem and that is he is not on an Internet connection fast enough to join a 3 or 4 way Video chat.
He needs to have at least 384 kbps as an Upload and not capping the iChat Bandwidth below the 500kbps mark. (iChat Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit drop down)

  • Multi-person video chat

Yesterday I was able to use the multi-person video chat on iChat. Today I can't. I have no idea why. My friend also has multi-person video chat capabilities but today her video chat icon is a single-person one. Is this just a problem with my iChat? Or is everyone having it? How can I fix it?
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

iChat since iChat 2.0 AV has always read the "Automatic" setting in Quicktime System Preferences as a zero (0).
It has been mentioned for a long time and in several places that it should be set to something that sees the setting as a high enough number.

  • Multi Person Video Chatting

I have always been able to video chat and all of a sudden, it only allows me to video chat with one other person. I go to the connection doctor and under my capabilities, it says "Slow Network" next to "Join multi person video" and there is a red X. There is another macbook in my household and it runs fine with no problems in the network

    Hi,
iChat "reads" what the Internet Speed is as it starts up.
Lots of factors based around what is going on when iChat is Started up (end of Boot sequence as ichat is Login Item or waking from Sleep) can get a false figure written to the iChat .plist
I would start with a computer Shut down then Restart then launch iChat.
If that does not help delete com.apple.ichat.plist and restart iChat
This .plist is in Your HOme Folder/Library/Preferences which you will have to go to Manually

  • Multi person video chats

Is it possible to do a multi person video chat with a G4? I'm running a 1.6GHz PowerPC G4 with 896Mb of RAM. Thanks.

you should be able to participate in one, but not host (meaning initiate) one. i have a powerbook G4, and when i have a three way chat with my mom and brother, either my mom (intel mac mini) or my brother (imac G5) has to initiate the chat from the start.... i can initiate a two way video chat no problem, but if a third person is invited after i initiate the chat, it wont work because my computer is the central hub and isnt fast enough to juggle all them info packets....

  • Multi person video chat with Face Time?

I use OS X Yosemite, the most advanced operating system for the consumer. Apple is even  trying to get into the business world with this system. But unlike Microsoft (Skype) and Google (Hangouts) it does not support multi person conferencing. Is Apple serious about getting inside the conference rooms of industry and Government when it would not even satisfy the needs of individuals like me?  When many years ago I decided to place my trust in Apple, foregoing Windows, Linux, etc, I hoped that the Cupertino engineers and designers would strive to meet the most basic needs of its users in terms of something widely used by the competition. Years have gone by without a serious effort to fulfill the needs of the elderly like me to enable us to see our children who live far away via our beloved Mac computers. It seems as if the Mac is always generations behind Windows in many respects such as this. Please Apple, wake up! We need you now!

    Tell Apple.

  • Multi-person Video calls

Is it possible to easily use FaceTime or iMessage to do multiple person video calls? I believe the original version of faceTime allowed this but now it seems I have to go through iMessage and get everyone on a Buddy list and it very cumbersome; I could not get it to work.
Apple does not seem to advertise this as a capability so I am assuming it is not possible.
Am I missing something or do i just need to try a different program or app, like Google groups or something?
    thanks

    HI Chris,
I have seen split Pic in Pic video like like and solved it the same way Rj does Restart iChat.

  • Pixelated Video Conference

iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.7) A few friends and I were trying out iChat AV and wanted to do a Video Conference that would include the four of us. When just two of us were video conferencing everything was clear and fine, but as soon as a 3rd or 4th person joined all of the video became very pixelated and fuzzy. For example, the small video box showing me stayed clear and easy to see, while the other larger three boxes it became hard to view the people I was conferencing with to the point that they were almost unrecognizable. As soon as the video conference went back to just two people it became clear again. Of course, we all were using Tiger and were using an iBook G4 or a new MacBook. We each played around with our preferences and changed the bandwidth settings w/o any change. Any suggestions out there for viewing a multi participant video conference clearly?

Apologies, my mistake.  I'm using an early 2011 MBP and the FaceTime camera works fine with Skype.

Will the built in iSight camera allow me to record me (myself) giving a lecture? If so, can I then upload this to Skype or an email?
Yes it will.  Probably the simplest way to make a basic video is to open up QuickTime Player and select 'New Movie Recording' from the 'File' menu.  If your needs are less basic then it's probably best to re-post this question in the iMovie forum.

  • Multi-Person Videochat initiated from G5

I have a iMac G5 (1.8) and can not initiate a multi-person video chat. Some of my buddies have the multiple video symbol. When trying to start the chat with 2 of them I get the message that my computer can not start a video chat with several persons and suggests a text chat.
It worked already some months ago.
Internet connection is fast enough (6029/580 kBit/s), speed settings in QuickTime and iChat are ok.

  • Multi-person chat no longer working.

I've had my MacBook since June, connected to my cable modem via a wireless g router. I've always been able to have multi-person video chats with no problem, but recently, it has only been allowing me to chat with one person. on buddy lists, my name only has one camera next to it instead of the 3 stacked cameras. I thought it could possibly be my connection speed, but i'm regularly getting between 700-1200 kbps in various tests. I've tried directly connecting my computer to my cable modem and bypassing wifi completely, but it shows no effect. any ideas? I've only noticed it since the latest software update, but it couldn't been before/after that. It was just the last major change to my computer.

    Hi bt1988,
This can be because cahes and log files have not been rotated.
For some reason iChat does not like it if the Cron scripts are not run at least once a month if you have heavy usage.
The clue is the loss of Multi (Stacked) ICons for you and your Buddies.
The Cron Scripts are normally Run at 0300-06.00 in the morning when your computer is On and Awake 24/7
They can be done anytime with Utilities.
MacJanitor is what I use. It is free. Cocktail has a simialr feature (along with others).

  • IM to Multi-party Video Escalation

Can someone please explain the call flow of escalating an IM between two CUPC users to a multi-party video conference?
What functions do each of the following play:
    CUPC
    CUCM
    CUVC

You can escalate an IM to a call and then merge additional particpants into it through CUPC. If these participants are video-capable, CUPC will offer video functionality automatically. Note that CUPC 7.x only support video in softphone mode. Deskphone mode would require CUVA.
CUCM would choose the appropriate conference bridge when CUPC requests a conference be formed for three or more participants. The Intelligent Bridge Selection would choose a video bridge if two or more of these participants are video capable.
CUVC is the MCU which would provide the video conference resource to UCM. This is analogous to the audio conferencing resource provided by DSPs in an ISR.

  • 2 X person video chat for Intel Qs

Hey I know the specs required for doing a multi person (eg, more than 2 people) video chat for PowerPC processors, however I was wondering what the spec requirements are for the Intel ones... I am primarily directing this towards the Mac Mini Solo v. Duo which I am assuiming the Solo could be the only one that might have limitations (like my poor powerbook...).
SO my question is can a Mac Mini Solo HOST a multi person video chat OR is it like my powerbook and other "slower" apples that can only join multi chats yet cannot host them? AND if the Solo cannot HOST a multi person video chat CAN it at least JOIN a multi person video chat?
AND finally JUST to make sure there are no compatabilities problems, can a intel based apple multi-video chat with a powerpc apple?
    Thank you,
    TM

    Hi T.M.,
Go to System Preferences and then Quicktime.
    Select the Streaming tab.
In the drop down se the speed to match your download speed.
If it faster than 1.5meg then use 1.5 meg.

  • Tandberg C40 Video Conference not established just Audio Call

    Hi,
I'm running CUCM 9.1 with Tandberg C40 TC5.1.11 + MCU3515. When a Video Call has been established it works like a charm but when a 3erd Video Phone is added the video conference is established but the tandberg display a "Audio Call" message. The video conference is established running a MCU3515.
What's wrong? Do I need a additional license? This is the license installed:
    Valid release key:
    Yes
    Installed options:
    NaturalPresenter, PremiumResolution, DualDisplay
    Thanks in advance

    Hello Leo -
You're issue to me is hard to follow and understand, if you could let us know more about what you're trying to do, it would help, be as descriptive as possible if you can.
At what point are you seeing the "audio call" message on the C40?  Typically you'll see that when the C40 already has one video call connected, anything that tries to connect after that will take the remaining audio only port, as the C40 can support 1 video call and 1 audio only call.
